Hey dude, awesome video. I know I might sound dumb, but I had no idea that the entire grip could be taken off for repairs like that. Because of you I was able to repair my controller while it was still in the early stages of bubbling.

Its nice that you still show how to glue it down. I used the same glue with a toothpick and it did wonders (forgot about the gloves part tho loll)! I also did a better job at the cutting part, i feel for you ahahah. For 8$ the fix i can def live with it, thanks for giving me confidence it could be done!
Great vid as always. I recently had to replace the grips on my elite as it was bubbling up. I decided to go with the Scuf grips and can honestly recommend them as a potential replacement too.
Just ordered scuf as many people have told me they were higher quality than the original grips. This comment was the last recommendation that convinced me. Here's to hoping it goes well.

I was also going to try to glue and trim the rubber... but 3 different glues... and nothing stuck, and I couldn't get it to align.... and I just ordered new ones for the customer. I just sent back my second controller- grips came off on both. Same issue.. Microsoft replaced both with brand new controllers. I won’t be so lucky if it happens again. Microsoft said they won’t exchange a third time. Yes what’s up Microsoft??? You put out a $150 controller and it fails within a year. If this were a car- there’d be a serous recall. Appreciative that Microsoft is exchanging the defective controllers, but you’d think that they would get their act together and put an end to the exact same issue players are having with these uber expensive controllers. Microsoft should expect their elite controller to be used heavily by gamers. Only players who are serious gamers would shell out a pretty penny for this device. And Microsoft should expect hundreds and hundreds of hours to be played using this controller. You’d think they would build this controller ready to be heavily used. Yet something as simple as the grips coming off (for hundreds or thousands of controllers) would flag a quality control issue on their end and they would resolve it. Thank you for this video. I’m sure I’ll be ordering a set for my new (third) and current controller- I’m banking the grips will fail on my new controller at some point....
I actually replaced my grips with the Scuf Pro Grip. Just feels better overall, and the kit also includes a set of small, medium, and large analog sticks in both domed and concave variants.
They last about 7-9 months before they swell up from the oil on your skin. Clean the rubber weekly with rubbing alcohol or something similar to get more time
@@baileycl23 yup sounds about right, so now you can either call Microsoft and ship it to Texas and get a new one. 3-7 weeks. Or buy a new one from BestBuy with their 2 year warranty and just get a new one when it breaks. I did both, Microsoft and BestBuy. Let me know how it goes with MS if you call them 👍

It's better to look for a broken elite controller where the grips are still good. I've found a few on eBay that where under $50. Still pretty expensive, but cheaper than just paying for the side rails.
Mine was still in waranty but I couldn't claim because I didn't own an Xbone. They ignored all my messages about this issue. My rubber started peeling & the left bumper snapped off after 10 months.
Dan my rubber slightly peeled and my right trigger started messing up slightly so I had to change the custom distance I had to press down to do basic functions such as drive and shoot
just a small review after replacing mine. These controllers are expensive so we realy don't want to see them wear out like that. It's really neat to replace them and they look brand new. Colors are matching perfectly... to the touch it sort of feels less... rubbery? just very slightly but maybe that's a good thing and maybe the material will not do that weird streching anymore. I recommend not using any tools, just grab it like this guy does with your fingers and pull it off. Because when you do it for teh first time, it sort of difficult , because the silly people at the factory even put ssome small drops of glue under it here and there, and with tools you might scratch the other part of the shield. So just grab it like that and rip it off, don't worry about it. To conclude it. I'm very satisfied that I could fix the controller to look nice again, although I'm dissapointed that this even happened. I mean I am paying now extra for parts for a controller that was expensive to begin with.

That sounds like the top layer of black paint has come away showing the metal underneath. On my kids Switch the black paint has chipped a bit on the very top section but only a tiny bit to show the metal underneath (that Switch has had a beating though). It doesn't mean that it will wear away or anything, it is just cosmetic so it won't effect it :-)
I have the white elite controller, its not failing yet but I am more interested in understanding the cause and STOPPING the rubber from failing, any ideas? All I have done so far is add a silicone skin in an effort to try to reduce the heat and oils from my filthy mitts causing issues. I also try to keep a more relaxed grip on the darn thing not sure what else I can do

A little late to this party. Amazon or eBay have both non-OEM, third party parts (made in china), and probably no better quality than oem, but who knows. I bought a whole electronics repair kit that has all the security bit screw drivers for consoles. By Teckman (brand, china) and its been a good set, nothing was flawed or has broken and Ive repaired idk a dozen things with it so far. If you have a Harbor Freight store, they have security bits too. If you dont want to buy a spudge tool, an expired hard plastic credit card ir giftcard can work though it doesnt have the lip like the spudge does, but dont jam it in far where wires may be damaged (like on an ipod).

Sadly the bubbling issue only gets worse as time goes on. I have a Gears of War 4 elite controller from 2016 and about a year into using them they started to bubble. At first I did the same as in this video which was taking the edges and flattening them out then gluing them. That worked for a couple of months but the issue is that it continued to want to expand which created bubbles in the middle of the rubber. At this point I am looking to see if there is a way to use something to dissolve the glue on a spare elite controller without sacrificing the molecular integrity of the rubber and then after cleaning it off figure out a glue to them glue the new rubber onto my controller, replacing the old rubber. It might be impossible and at best impractical but I can’t just buy a new one since the Gears 4 elite controller is now stupid expensive now with some selling for $300+ on eBay.
I have the forza edition controller with the rubber grips used it up till 2022 until it started stick drifting I never had a problem with the grips still completely intact just general use over time
unfortunately for me after 2 years of use the rubber on the inside not the removable panes came lose after terrible job gluing it down with super glue can feel bubble in the rubber again on other side.
Honestly its better than buying an elite 2 because those problems are technological and the elite 1 problems are physical so you can just buy replacement parts

Both pieces came off mine 😄... I have considered glueing them back on but the fit is so precise it's tough to do.

Scuf sells grips especially made for the Xbox Elite controller and the grips are actually better and they don't come off like the elite grips

At this point I am looking to see if there is a way to use something to dissolve the glue on a spare elite controller without sacrificing the molecular integrity of the rubber and then after cleaning it off figure out a glue to them glue the new rubber onto my controller, replacing the old rubber.
It might be impossible and at best impractical but I can’t just buy a new one since the Gears 4 elite controller is now stupid expensive now with some selling for $300+ on eBay.
Same problem. Buying a used gears controller that's missing the rubber grips on the bottom and inside. Every find a solution?
I have the forza edition controller with the rubber grips used it up till 2022 until it started stick drifting I never had a problem with the grips still completely intact just general use over time

All Rubbers get lose... really sucks.

My problem is, the inner part can not be replaced.
unfortunately for me after 2 years of use the rubber on the inside not the removable panes came lose after terrible job gluing it down with super glue can feel bubble in the rubber again on other side.
Honestly its better than buying an elite 2 because those problems are technological and the elite 1 problems are physical so you can just buy replacement parts
