To me, this sounds like a Dennis song that Brian took over on vocals (probably because Dennis's throat was too blown out to sing). The song structure sounds like something from Pacific Ocean Blue, it's that slow-motion fireworks thing that Dennis was the master of. The idea of Dennis writing a song this vulnerable during his last years alive, with Brian singing from the exact same perspective of personal tragedy, it's just way too powerful for a mainstream audience. I know that the official Beach Boys tried recording this and abandoned it, probably because you can't repeat this kind of magic...
So beautifully tragic. Gripping and emotionally intense -- literally all of prime Brian Wilson's trademarks. Such a delicate song, both emotionally and vocally. Man .... Dennis was the only one to *truly* understand, and even embrace Brian's genious. Then he made his own incredible piece with Pacific Ocean Blue. But no matter what, he was always the one to back up, idolize, respect and admire Brian - through thick and thin. Brian never lost it -- he just didn't care enough a lot of the time -- and for good reason, TBH. This whole sessions bootleg is a different Brian though, and this was in the 80's! In a lot of ways, Dennis was easily the most "woke" member of the band.

This song is really something else. I’m guessing this demo is the only version of this song that exists. Has anyone tried to write out the lyrics? The bits and pieces of lyrics I can understand are deeply moving. Wonderful song.
From what I understand, these "cocaine sessions" do NOT have Dennis on them...because he was out trying to score some cocaine. IINM. the "write-a-song, get-a-burger-and-coke" stuff happened in 1976. In 1981 Brian was still a year away from his second stint with Landy.
quick question. Could I use bootleg sessions in my films? It's not like it's copyrighted, right? And this song never really did have a proper studio recorded version. And it's been more than 20 years now so the performance copyright has expired already. Thanks if anyone will reply :)
It's good of you to ask, Rodiell, but I wouldn't do it before getting permission from Brian's management. Some of this was indeed used in Brian's 1988 "Rio Grande." The only reason I'm writing this is to caution you. Granted, Brian Wilson has never been the litigating type...it's his cousin M. Love that would surely nail you. Good luck
Thank you so much for the informative reply, Sammy Boy. I'll watch out indeed. I also didn't know this was used in Rio Grande. Thanks for the heads up :)
Unfortuantely it is copyrighted. Unreleased material is nearly copyrighted by the writer even if it isn't officially released. This copyright lasts for 50 years after it is recorded. If it gets officially released before the 50 years is up the copyright is extended to 70 years. If it isn't officially released the song becomes public domain (i.e you wouldn't have to pay songwriting royalties) although you still wouldn't be able to use this particular recording without permission.
Please change your description. Brian was not under Dr. Landy's "care" in 1981. And when he was under Dr. Landy's care for a second time (the first time being 1975-1976) starting in 1982, sessions like these would NEVER have been allowed to occur. Brian was essentially in prison in the 1980s and early 1990s, and Landy was his jailer. During that time there was never any time when Brian was not either with Dr. Landy himself or with a person or persons under Dr. Landy's employ. Never. Even when he was on tour with the Beach Boys.

Very well said my friend... I couldn't agree more.
Beautifully worded - I couldn't have said it better myself. Very well done.
Carl would support Brian too

Brian has said in the past that Dennis was the guy in the band that was always “musically with it”.
I have been looking for this version for the past six years.
...thank you :-/
trivera648 is there another version?

This song is perfect the way it is, I just wish that it had cleaner audio
Does anyone know if theres a remastered version of this...its my spirit animal
Same here!!! Someone should do a real clean up to it! Or better yet!!... get Brian to do it!!!
@@chrisfeeney5814 do you have a version recorded? i dont but need one
man there was one but it got deleted off RUclips.
Beautiful & tragic
it's great.fuckin awesome!!!!
Have you heard the finished version , brians vocals are amazing here

Some of this stuff made it on to the first solo album, in the song Rio Grande.

+scatteredfrog that's Dennis on vocals though, definitely
+Iain Tweedy Actually it's Brian on vocals and piano, Dennis plays the organ.
It's definitly Brian on Vocals
Are they both singing - Brian really loud and Dennis really soft, or is it all Brian? Thank you.
You can also be fairly confident that the picture is not '81/'82. Likely 8-10 years older than that.
Beautiful 🌹

tell everyone you know about this. im not kidding...tell fucking everyone you know.....NO SERIOUSLY, tell everyone
Dennis Wilson was not present here, and Eugene Landy had not been in the picture for a few years, and wouldn't be back in the picture until late 1982.
spiritualized´s influence ?...

@@Guy_Forget thank you very much, the person who introduced me to this song unfortunately passed, wanted to put something toward their memory
@ Oh, my condolences. I can't imagine a more beautiful song to be remembered by
Dennis can't have been coaxing Brian away from Eugene Landy in 1981 when Landy was initially fired in '76 and not brought back til '82 or '83
Landy was brought back in 1983, the cocaine sessions were recorded between 1981-1982, and Dennis was definitely on it. He played the organ.
