    I agree with others here -- this is one of the Brian songs that makes me cry every single time I hear it. The build-up to "make me feel so ALONE" gives me chills. The final piano/strings section is so spiritual and hopeful, and of course it has so much meaning just remembering how much Brian has done and overcome. Stunning.

    This is one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite albums, and it really speaks to me about struggle, isolation, depression, and loss. But then, it's also important to note that it segues back into a reprise of That Lucky Old Sun, as the sun rises on another day -- another chance to come out of the darkness...
    And then it's followed by the upbeat "Going Home," which says that you CAN come out of the darkness "back where I belong" and find piece of mind "one piece at a time." After the darkness, you CAN return to the world -- which is Brian's story -- and hope for us all.
    The song order at the end of the album is really important. :)

    This video was my introduction to this obscure but beautiful song. circa 2008, 10 years ago now. lovely arrangement with horns, strings and piano. Brian's voice shows signs of life. "lost in the dark" does a decent job of reaching the high notes and staying in tune. He's rough on the lows but that was never his thing. I love singing along on his falsetto songs. I tried singing this song in same key, and the lows and highs are hard to get to; it seems like a huge range to my amateur voice. His upper range was always astonishing.

I've always wondered what aspects of this song you were more responsible for and which ones Brian was more involved in. What was the nature of your working relationship and collaboration style on it, if it's not too personal to ask (which it might well be, I know). @@frizwhiz1090 Brian had the verse chords and melody, and part of the chorus idea, but he played it much faster. I suggested he slow it down a lot and added some minor chords . Then, I played him the intro, which was something I'd had kicking around. He loved it, but had me transpose it from Dm to Dbm. I thought that was odd since Dm flows into the A of the verse, but he was right that it would be a more dramatic change. The best moment was when we were working on the chorus, which, when he first played it, was F#m7 to B7, Em7 to A7. I asked him what would be more interesting than the Em, and he quickly said Fmaj7, which again, I thought was nuts, but it it THE money chord of the song. He left after about 45 minutes of working on it, and my wife and I wrote the words that night.

    • @frizwhiz1090
      @frizwhiz1090 4 года назад

      @@scottbennett9441 That's quite fascinating., Scott, thanks. He may have gotten into a generally more conventional songwriting bag in recent years, and the MOR influence of Joe Thomas probably didn't help, but he can obviously still come up with some inspired chord changes and brilliance when challenged and stimulated. Do you happen to know if any of the 2004 BWPS Smile lyrics (besides the "Sandwich Isles" sections) were contemporary, unused original words by VDP? I asked him once when I met him but it was kind of rushed and he didn't get a chance to answer. The Look (Song For Children) and CIFOTM lyrics have a spookily original feel to them, but most I understand were newly written which is really amazing, Parks being able to recapture the '66''67 mood, because they all have a very seamless Smile vibe. RIP Nicky Walusko BTW, really sad. Thanks again for your insights and doing such fine work with Brian.

    Brian Wilson has had a life of extraordinary triumphs and tragedies out of which came some of the most beautiful music the world has ever known. This video is the best I have seen chronicling that brilliant life. The highs (Notice the glint in his young eye :33), the lows (The obvious pain in his eyes 3:12), and the abiding love of his brothers, only to emerge victorious as the last picture of Brian shows. The song is so emotional.

      And what a shame it never found its way onto an album before turning up on the Good Vibrations Boxset!

      The opening is from "Can't Wait Too Long,", a song originally recorded during the "Wild Honey" sessions. It went unreleased until the 'Good Vibrations' box set came out. Brian does this new, short version on the Lucky Old Sun album. It's flat-out beautiful.

    Wow what a Yawn. All the folks here raving about this song. Must all be insomniacs. It's this kind of masturbatory pitiable ghoulash that caused the Beach Boys to vacate the charts. Wilson tried so hard to show everybody that he was capable of something "bigger" than Hot Rods and Diggin Chicks that he drove himself crazy... he lost sight of what Beach Boys music was all about...making you feel good.... making you smile and be happy. The British invaded and Brian hid in the Bunker and lived off his new fame of "eccentric schizo genius." Unfortunately this new fame sold magazines, biographic movies, and not records.

      Hi Mikey! Ha ha... The Truth Bashes Brian? I like the Beach Boys very much. Their early recordings will always remain timeless classics. They were great before Brian tried to be the Beatles and went nuts during the failed endeavor. The elderly Beach Boys and their fans remain in denial. They need to quit cry-babying over daddy, drugs and schizophrenia and accept that time rolled over the Beach Boys like a wave on the beach. From the Pendletones to the Beach Boys; Turn Turn Turn.

      so how does that sit with songs like 'girl don't tell me'? clearly emulating the beatles in the early beach boys days and still amazing. Brian had to evolve as a songwriter and did so perfectly. And in spite of mental issues he still produced moments of brilliance later on.. the beach boys love you was 1977 and i consider it to be a BB classic album... go listen to let's put our hearts together and then tell me brian isn't capable of 'deeper songs'! (obviously i know all music is subjective!! but when you are so insistent on bashing someone i'm compelled to reply)

    • @noahzark6755
      @noahzark6755 7 лет назад +1

      Mikey .... there you go again... I didn't bash anybody.... Brian and the Beach Boys are the ones who stayed in the limelight solely by publicizing Daddy's Meanness, and Brian's plethora of maladies, self inflicted and otherwise, spinning in circles, pointing fingers.....I saw Mike Wilson on TV once admit that he was embarrassed of the pet sounds album cover... calling it "lame" the comment was something like...."while we went to a photo shoot at the local petting zoo... the Beatles were busy doing the album cover for "Sergeant Pepper's" And who is talking about "deeper songs" Heck even Gary Lewis and the Playboys were making a string of hits while the Beach boys wrapped themselves in denial. I once went to see the Beach Boys in an Outdoor Concert in Chicago... and only two of them showed up. Watch "Love and Mercy".... Brian quit making music with his Beach Boys and would only hire studio musicians who blew "genius" smoke up his ass to work with him, while the Beach Boys tried to convince him to return to their roots.. but to no avail. No Bashing involved. Brian and the BB's dropped the ball and made excuses, not good music. "I'm picking up good vibrations, can't carry on a conversation, no girls just masturbation... good good good good...." Ok, so that was bashing...
