  • Speaker repair surrounds for different Bowers & Wilkins Sorrento series, like the DM601S3, 602.5S3, 603S3, CM2, CM4, CM6 (6,5 inch), DM602S3, DM604S3, type ZZ12882, ZZ10129, ZZ12874, ZZ10065 (7 inch) where the grey surrounds will get hard an inflexible, and at the end will tear apart.
    ( for ordering: www.repairyourspeakers.com/en... )
We offer a video to repair them with our rubber surrounds, with use of simple tools. P.S. The old surround on the backside is still strong and flexible, you can see this on the video. We glue the new surround over the left over grey intact rubber, and made the old rubber airtight closed with glue. We like to make the repair easy, good and at a low price with simple tools. P.S. These are real rubber surrounds. If you choose another colour it might be that you will be having the same problem in a short time.. Comments are welcome!

You should then apply the glue as described on our webshop as evenly as possible, and wait until the glue is approximately from white to 50 - 65% translucent. The glue can be found at: www.repairyourspeakers.com/en/glue-brush-syringe/glue-for-speaker-repair-1-x-15ml-best-tested/a-1675-11 and more information at: www.repairyourspeakers.com/en/repair-videos/glue-brush-fluid/c-3 .

      Good morning,
Thanks for your reply and information. Actually why we didn’t choose grey again for the surround, is that the black rubber of our surrounds has proven to be very reliable. We choose for proven quality of the material instead of in this case the grey coloured material, where we don’t have long experience with. Also, I look to the future, the (original) grey surrounds got already after some years more inflexible as when you bought the speakers at a shop. So, the parameter will change already after some years. With the rubber black surrounds you won’t have this problem.

Good morning, sorry for my late reply. There are shops who can repair not working speakers. With a woofer (I guess you mean one woofer unit) first aid is to look behind the woofer at the wire from the terminal to the back of the cone. Because woofers makes large movements, it could be well possible a wire makes right there a bad contact. Simple is to have some power on the woofer and gently touch the wires (for instance with the back of a tooth brush) in different ways, if you can make the wire make a short contact. If so, be careful to repair, or send the speaker to a repair shop who can make the speaker work again like it should be. Best regards, Fred.

Hi, Do I have to remove also the papery thing from the metal rim of the speaker ? (the white stuff) ?

    • @audiofriends254
      @audiofriends254  11 месяцев назад

      Good morning,
Thanks for your message. The white high density paper rim on the frame has not to be removed. It’s the rim between the mounting of the outer edge of the rubber surround on the frame. Next could be: why? There are different options. I think at least it's part of the design of this Bowers & Wilkens speaker.
It may have been used to dampen the resulting resonances of the cone at the outer edge. If it is expected that there will be a relatively large production of certain speakers, manufactures still want to fine-tune them, especially if this can be done in a relatively simple way. That could be possible, I have also seen it with other manufacturers. Best regards, Fred.

    • @audiofriends254
      @audiofriends254  8 месяцев назад

Good morning, in my opinion it's for humans not hear able if the white thin paper ring in this case is removed or not. The ring is very thin, not as thick as for instance an 11 inch woofer from Acoustic Research. Further, if you might use it, our SP6 glue is very strong, also on for instance metal. We have tested the glue on different surfaces: www.repairyourspeakers.com/en/glue-brush-fluid/c-3. Also if you use other strong glue to mount the surround, I'm quite sure it has no hear able effect. The rubber surrounds are well designed and will give you the sound you want. Best regards, Fred

    • @audiofriends254

      Good morning,
If the cone is going to sag due to gravity, it is possible that the voice coil will make a scratchy sound at low tones. For example, the KEF B200 SP1039 is known for that. The Bowers & Wilkens Sorrento series is more known for a hardened and less flexible surrounds.

I can't seem to find this centre speaker anywhere on Google with a problem at the surrounds. It is possible, that sometimes happens at large companies such as JBL, that the parts for a series of speakers are purchased from different manufacturers. Especially if the order is big in a short time. I'm not sure if this is the case at B&W, but it was at JBL. The result could be with B&W that the material of the LCR600S3 is of different material. In any case, it seems that the surrounds of the LCR600S3 are thinner than those of the larger speaker units. I just made a raw simple video:

2 things I would like to mention :
    1. If the speaker originally came with foam surrounds then it should be replaced with foam not rubber, as this might affect the sound since the specifications of that speaker is as per foam. The rubber has a different effect, damping, stiffness, etc. All these parameters could greatly affect the sound.
    2. A foam surround usually provides better sound when compared to rubber, which is why most quality subwoofer have foam surrounds as opposed to rubber. The downside of foam is that it is often subject to dry rot, etc and is not as durable as rubber.

This is definitely not the way to replace speaker suspension foam. Don't do this way if you value your speakers. The Centre dust cover dome must be removed and shims placed around the coils to keep them central, then glue the foams, let them set and remove the shims and replace the dust cover domes. These are nice speakers. Worth the effort to do it properly. DIY speaker repair at its worst.

Good evening, thanks for your reply. Well, certain in this case the solid dust cap a kind of way can’t be removed, unless you want to destroy the complete speaker. That is also the case with for instance Dynaudio an other speakers: www.repairyourspeakers.com/en/video-manuals-for-repair/foam-or-rubber-surrounds/c-27. The value after destroying the irreplaceable dustcap will be I think that low, that the trash bin will be the only solution..
For the enthousiasts it’s possible to use indeed shims at other speakers. On our website we indeed refer to people from who we think have done this option right. Back to the dustcap. The dustcap is not only to avoid dust. It has a function in the sound the speaker produces: www.repairyourspeakers.com/en/frequenty-asked-questions/15-more-about-the-dustcap-story/c-45.
So we think that if shimming is necessary, the same dustcap should be used. The best shimming we found on RUclips: ruclips.net/video/7A8M8HdngS0/видео.html.
      With best regards, Fred

@@audiofriends254 I understand the difficulty with the centre cones, but to replace the suspension without centering and positioning the coils is a bit reckless IMO. Perhaps at least devise a method of supporting the cone against the speaker frame, thereby fixing its position whilst the old suspension is still attached, then glue the new in place then remove the supports. At the very least warn people of the dire consequences for the driver that can occur following this method.

@@user-eg7lc1xx5w Good evening, thanks for your reply.
First, I would like to refer to the following link: ruclips.net/video/Pw7A7g05tA8/видео.html. It is actually a basis of what the customer wants: either a surround that fits slightly smaller within the frame, or a surround that fits exactly inside the frame just like the original. We first had the 8”VF which did not fall exactly within the frame by a small distance, but could therefore be centered in any way. You already understand: complaints, that the surround did not fit exactly like the original. (We now have the original/genuine surround for this speaker: www.repairyourspeakers.com/en/foam-surrounds/vifa/vifa-m21wg-woofer-1x-genuine-foam-surround-for-repair/a-3026 -10000025).
Well to return to the previous story, the customers want the surrounds to fit exactly in the frame. If you purchase an original surround, this will often be the case. This is certainly the case with the B&W speakers mentioned.
Furthermore, the importance of centering depends on the type. If 7-inch speakers in the B&W compare to, for example, an Acoustic Research AR3a with a very flexible spider plus heavy cone, then there is clearly a difference. In a closed cabinet, the mechanical resistance must be small, the air plug must absorb it. This is because a resistance of an air plug is more linear than a purely mechanical one.
The B&W speakers mentioned are speakers with a powerful magnet and a sturdy centering ring. Furthermore, the outer edge on the cone is clearly visible. Then it is also easy to place the new surround right here. In my video I left some particles, and I don't have used a Dremel (us.dremel.com/en/products/-/show-product/tools/dremel-2050-15-stylo-versatile-craft- tool) is used. This is because the outside of the gray surround is hardened. The residues on the cone are like new, and are also airtight sealed by gluing the new glue over it.
Because our (rubber, basically indestructible) surround is as original (www.repairyourspeakers.com/en/foam-surrounds/bowers-wilkins/bw-dm602-dm604-dm605s3-1x-100-rubber-surround /a-2253-10000066), in size and shape, minute alignment is absolutely not necessary. This B&W speaker also has a fairly large clearance between the pole core and the top pole plate, unlike, for example, Dynaudio. The revised speaker in question meets all conditions, technically and visually. So no reason to apologize, sorry.
      With best regards, Fred

@@audiofriends254 that clearly answers my question about the centering of the coil. Thanks !

I did it this way using supplied foam and instructions.
It worked perfectly. You have time to zero-in the centreing as the glue dries very slowly.
I'm no expert and I found it an easy process. It saved a pair of old Mission 762s from getting binned.
They're currently singing, 12 hours a day in my mate's house.

Not a good way to do it. B&W shoudl fix under warranty.

Indeed, Bowers and Wilkins has to my opinion something to do with a kind of warranty or leniency. But the Sorrento series are about 20 years old...
