I think Lego has done a very good job representing the frustration in building an overlanding rig or working on an old Defender with this build. Also I heard it can be left or right hand drive, but didn't see you mention that.
my personal vote is expedition mode.

I was more interested in this set than some of the other cars, and I wasn't bothered by the extras. One of my favourite things about the Delorean is the ability to mix it up to match the film. And my pet peeve from that car is the doors not staying up so I appreciate that the engine cover has a prop on the Land Rover. But I'm not convinced it's worth more than £200. I'd probably be happy if it was £180/190 ish. It'll probably be one that sits on my wish list whilst other sets take priority for a while.

    • @joevictor53

I wouldn't be happy at even £180/190. £150 was a decent price increase for this line of sets recently and they want to bump it up even more? No thank you.

      @carriew5106 Год назад +1

@@joevictor53 yeah, I figured I'd bump up my price range based on the piece count, but actually a lot of them are the extras. Just realised that the Discovery Shuttle is £170 and that's a much better set than the Land Rover!

@@carriew5106 People who are space fans - no brainer. However, many are not, and it means nothing to them. It's always about the balance between the price, building experience, and theme, and Lego are betting heavily on the theme here, and I think they might be right.

As a Canadian and used to the price gouging I would have been okay with $240 similar to what I payed for the T2 but $330 is not even reasonable at this point. I feel I'm going to prioritize either the DeLorean or Optimus Prime, build up some VIP points and know this one down by a couple of hundred.

I like that this set has all the important cool features of Technic, but without being *all Technic*. Also, I appreciate when Lego does a big set in a not so common color, like sand green, in this case.

I learned to drive in an old, beaten-up 90. That old thing had missing gears, no windows, shredded seats, and someone bent the front axle once.
The mudguards falling off feels pretty apt, honestly 😂
The price is a little steep, but nostalgia can be a persuasive wallet-opener. Especially for the Expedition version.

I love love love it (largely because I love the subject matter). Will be a defo pick up for me, but you’ve highlighted my pain complaints too. It will be the classic build for me, so all those extra ‘expedition’ pieces just feels like filler to push up the price. Could’ve skipped those and kept the cost down. As you say, it’s a lot I feel. Additionally, for the price and given this set is aimed at adult collectors, the Defender badge on the bonnet should defo have been a printed piece. Not a sticker. I’ve no problem with stickers on a £20 Speed Champions set, but not something like this.

Although Tiagos points are evident and sensible, I feel they are very futile in the grand scheme of things. For example having the whole issue of it being badly balanced isn't really that major. It's not a bad building experience per se just an ick which may have been the only way to create this set considering how different the structure is. And the whole deal with extra pieces, I feel people who buy this, buy it for the fact that it is an offroader, meaning the body kit and accessories will be kept. Maybe I'm saying this because I love offroaders and British car manufacturers, but I'll definitely be sure to pick it up. However, I thank you, Tiago, with your review, as u, racingbrick, and Jang have the best and most informative lego reviews, and I appreciate it.

In German we say "Jein" which is a combination of Ja/Yes and Nein/No. I understand what you mean, other companies and brands have done this, but LEGO never has to my knowledge and I do not think they will, because they would likely produce just as many vehicles as add on kits, and then not sell some of them. Or someone goes in the store and wants both but they only have the Jeep without add on so no purchase because dissatisified customer. I do not think they would do it, even if I would like to see it. But I am a MOC builder so have a different approach to buying, more like model builders and not collectors IYKWIM.

When building the Delorean had the same problems with parts falling off. I modified mine with working head lamps but had to use a dremel tool tool and tiny drill to insert low heat LED’s and carry wires to a concealed battery terminal under the hood next to the plutonium case. Tail lights were not doable. But came out quite pleasing. And the case came from hobby Lobby to show case a foot ball. Perfect size to display bot opening doors. And anchored the display case to the base with inserted lego elements from another kit through carefully drilled holes. There was enough room to house the two figures and the plaque in front of the vehicle inside this display case. And the inset oval was large enough to insert the hood elements to display beneath the Delorean from 1955 BTTF #3

As much as i love the 911 as a car, while this model might not be an earlier LR Series, i like it more because it just looks better than the porsche.
It is expensive when compared to mustang or porsche, but i think it's unique color choice and all that expedition equipment makes it look like epxensive collectible model, and not typical lego set.
To be honest, my biggest fear with this set is lego releasing a better looking model of a car i love even more than classic land rovers 😅

Not sure if *price/pc* is _that relevant_ here.
There are big pieces (wheels, rims, mudguardswindshield) and complex elements (shock absorbers).
Also, Lego could have released a *basic set* and an *add-on set* for the customer to choose what to build.

Great review! Short, but on the point. I really appreciate that you're sharing for example annoying parts in the building experience with us, because I wouldn't be able to get a feeling for this before I've built this model. Very honest review, highly appreciated from my side, thank you so much Tiago! :)

    Building experience is important.
If I buy it (even more expensive in Australia!) I might try sitting the build on a hand size bean bag to help stabilise it during construction. Maybe even tape the struts down too.
    Great review, thanks!
    - the expedition extras would go with a lot of my off-road Lego themes, like the Technics 42099 RC 4x4, which I’ve roped a small folded patch of canvas to the roof with jute, and added a wooden tray. Yes, “illegal” in some Lego players eyes, but it’s my toy 🤷🏻‍♂️😀

I'm a big Lego fan. I have a few sets. I love the products and all but the price increase in the sets are kinda unfair tbh.

Dang! Was hoping this set would be better! Just like you, the 18+ car sets are some of my favorites, but this one definitely missed the mark previously set by those other sets

That big scratch on windscreen... seriously for such expensive set, they really should pack the windscreen in separate paper bag. Transclear stickers are also very low quality due to the visibility of glue, no matter how careful you apply them. Easy pass for me.

After the 1950s pickup, I gotta say, seeing the simple hinges on LEGO car doors of this scale is a little disappointing. The doors on the truck aren't the sleekest, but man, it's so much more satisfying to not have the bumps on the exterior from the hinges. Especially with how all-out they went on this one, you'd think the doors would be a bit more complex

Thing is, normally I'd agree with you, but, in this case, the real Land Rover Defender 90 that this is modeled on also has hinges there, so it's actually accurate lol

Basic "mechanics", constant problems and a lot of play in moving parts?
That's the Land Rover exprience. Maybe missing an oil leak but apart from that, spot on 😂

I find it strange that Lego models often seem to have issues with the roof area :) I wasn't at all satisfied with the London bus one, for instance. Even though it was a great build for a bus.
