I got on finasteride recently after being terrified of the potential side effects. I'd been shaving my head for probably 4 years by the time I got on it, about a NW4. I didn't and don't mind being bald, but the common statement "nobody cares but you" isn't really true. It's true that people aren't obsessing about it the same way you are, but they also don't obsess over whether their friends are overweight or ugly, either. And there's plenty of evidence that bald people are considered less attractive, and that attractive people are treated better than unattractive people, even apart from the dating world where, especially with OLD, looks are (almost) everything.
After a pretty hellish year, I started getting my life together a bit and decided it might be worth looking into a hair transplant and seeing how it goes. I didn't understand exactly how the process worked, but after a consultation, they basically said that it's not a great idea to get a transplant without getting on finasteride and minoxidil, because while the transplanted hairs won't shed, the rest of your hair will continue to fall out and make the transplant look unnatural, because there's a limited amount of hair you can transplant, and that amount isn't enough to fully cover your scalp if your natural scalp hair all falls out. And if I'm going to get on fin/minox, it makes sense to wait some time to see how effective they are so that the limited donor hair can be better rationed while creating a decent hairline. So, I got on fin/minox, felt fine, then about 2 weeks onto fin I read stuff online about how the side effects can be permanent (dubbed "post finasteride syndrome" or PFS), even after using the drug for only a short time. I was terrified, because while I did want my hair back, I wouldn't permanently trade my sexual function for hair. It started to get into my head and sure enough, I started to have pretty severe sexual dysfunction, whereas previously I had no issues whatsoever. I spent a lot of time looking online for information on whether PFS was real. I was skeptical but still terrified of the possibility. I read through every pubmed article I could find on finasteride permanent side effects, and the information seemed to be conflicting. After sifting through a lot of fear mongering websites and posts, I came across videos from a channel on RUclips, haircafe, and I bingewatched the videos on finasteride repeatedly for weeks. The guy goes through all the available research, including the research funded by the PFS foundation, and basically debunks the existence of PFS. I highly recommend anyone considering finasteride to check out his videos. He can be a bit of an abrasive character but if you can get past that, he is really a no-nonsense guy who wants to help people save their hair. There's a lot to debunk with PFS, but at a high level, here are some key points:
    * Lots of people take finasteride. It's in the top 100 most prescribed drugs in the world. Sexual dysfunction is one of the most common medical issues men face, especially as they age. Some people who take finasteride will develop sexual dysfunction because of the medication, but some people will also develop sexual dysfunction for reasons entirely unrelated to the medication. If you develop sexual dysfunction while on finasteride for reasons unrelated to finasteride, stopping finasteride will not fix the sexual dysfunction, because finasteride never caused the sexual dysfunction. This is why the thousands of anecdotal reports of post finasteride syndrome are essentially worthless on their own without further research to back them up.
    * PFS foundation-funded studies that attempt to demonstrate the existence of post finasteride syndrome are all post hoc studies. They recruit people who already believe themselves to have PFS (ie sexual dysfunction, certain mental issues, ...) and then compare them to a control of healthy people (who don't have sexual dysfunction, mental issues, ...) who never took finasteride. Then the studies show that the PFS group is different from the control. Well, yeh, obviously -- you selected a group of people with certain issues and compared them to people who don't have those issues. This doesn't show anything at all.
    * The actual large scale clinical trials required by the FDA (as part of the most rigorous medication approval process in the world) show no evidence of post finasteride syndrome. PFS advocates often point out that there were people from the studies on finasteride who developed sexual dysfunction that did not recover upon cessation of the drug, but they fail to mention that there were just as many people in the control (ie taking a sugar pill) who developed persistent sexual dysfunction. This is because of what I already stated above, that some people will develop medical conditions while on a medication that aren't related to the medication itself, for the same reason that people develop medical conditions all the time when not on any medication. PFS advocates also point out that the studies were sponsored by Merck, the manufacturer of the drug, but this is how literally all drugs are tested. The company developing the drug must pay for the clinical trials in order to get FDA approval. The FDA approval process is extremely rigorous, and includes long term trials that continue after the drug becomes publicly available, that routinely result in drugs being pulled from the market 5 years after becoming available due to previously unknown side effects. This hasn't happened with finasteride after 30 years. PFS advocates also point out that the warning label was changed about 10 years ago from something like "side effects will go away for all men who discontinue use" to "side effects will go away for men who discontinue use" without the "all". This on the surface seems like Merck is admitting that side effects can be permanent, but really what they're doing is avoiding potential litigation. People have been trying to sue Merck for PFS and Merck is trying to avoid dealing with those lawsuits. There is no medical or scientific justification for the removal of "all", it was only done to avoid lawsuits.
    * The actual incidence of sexual side effects is even lower than the 3% from the video. The numbers from the large scale trials were something like 2% for finasteride users vs 1% for control, which is a significant increase, but will still only affect 1% of men who wouldn't otherwise experience sexual dysfunction. The longer you stay on the drug, the lower the incidence of side effects as they generally resolve on their own. For those who it doesn't, most can resolve the issue by halving or quartering the dose they take, which will still do a good amount for your hair without the side effects. The largest problem with the side effects is that sexual function is largely a mental problem, and so is very susceptible to the nocebo effect, where if you believe a medication will do something bad, you tend to experience that negative side effect, the opposite of the placebo effect (which is for positive effects). Related to the nocebo effect, if you believe PFS exists, you are much less likely to recover from any sexual side effects (real or nocebo'd) after quitting finasteride, because you truly believe that there is a reason you are experiencing those side effects.
So I got over my fears and sure enough, the nocebo effect I'd experience subsided quickly. I feel great and I'm excited that I'm finally taking action and doing something to prevent further hair loss, and getting a transplant to undo the damage that already happened because of putting off action for too long. I doubt many people will see this comment but if even one person does and it assuages their fears about finasteride enough to get on it, it was worth writing. The earlier you get on finasteride and minoxidil, the less likely it is that you'll ever need a hair transplant to get back a full hairline. I'm at the point where even with the meds and the transplant, I won't be getting a full NW0 hairline because I need to conserve some of my donor hair for potential future transplants if my hair continues to recede. Don't be like me, take action as soon as you notice it's happening to you. It's possible to be happy and accepting of yourself without your hair, definitely, but a full head of hair will almost definitely improve your attractiveness compared to being bald or thinning, which in turn will improve how people treat you, your dating options, and your overall quality of life.

    • @voskresenie-
      @voskresenie- Год назад +6

@@cr7sfansclub354 I'm not an expert, but I think the ideal is to work up to a max of 1mg/day if you can get there without sides. So maybe try upping it to 0.5mg every day and see if you do ok after a few weeks. If you start to experience sides, you can always go back to every other day, or if you don't experience sides, you can try doing 1mg one day and 0.5mg the next, and if that goes ok, move up to 1mg/day. Finasteride definitely has diminishing returns, so it's not like your dose (1/2 the typical dose 1/2 as often) is doing only 1/4 as much, it might be doing 1/2 or 3/4 as much as the full dose, but it might be worth trying getting to the normal prescribed dose if you can do it without sides as this will be most effective. But at the end of the day, if you feel most comfortable staying with what you're doing, that's way better than getting freaked out about sides and quitting the medication altogether. Good luck

Long term use of a medication that messes with your endocrine system is risky. Especially if you are young. I took propecia when I was in my late 20’s. My doctor tried to talk me out of it for the reason above. I ended up with weak erections and zero sex drive so I stopped taking it. I eventually just buzzed my hair down and excepted my baldness. Going bald can be devastating, and it has definitely effected my quality of life. I’m 48 now, and I will say that once you get older people mostly stop commenting about it and it bothers you less. I’m lucky enough to be married to a woman that accepts my imperfections.

Speaking from experience and desperately trying to claw my way back from hair loss, it's best go ahead and at least get on fin now while you're still happy with what you have because its 1000 times easier to keep what you have than to try and regrow a hairline without a transplant.
By the time you start to worry about it and want to do something it will likely be too late, that's how it was for me. I was 20 and noticing that my hair was going but it still looked good it was just a "mature hairline".
Now at 23 I'm barely hanging on to something worth having on top and wishing I had started when I first noticed the problem. I think I can eventually get to where I'm happy but it's likely going to take another couple of years of treatment plus a transplant to get there.

I took finasteride for years and it gave me some side effects. The worse being prostate swelling and pain and testicular pain both when I began, and randomly in the middle of treatment. After meeting with doctor they told me to stop. It’s been over a year now and my hair hasn’t really fallen out since then. No idea why it stopped, the only thing I do different is massage my head nightly, eat a healthier diet(no processed, anti-inflammatory), take collagen, stopped using hair spray and high heat, and exercise more. The pain I experienced on the drug wasn’t constant and came and went for a period of one to two days, and didn’t experience it for a few months in between. A couple times it was bad enough to prevent me from sleeping, especially when the prostate was enlarged and I felt tightness, heat, and tension in my inner groin toward the rear. I didn’t want to stop the drug because I am a vain person, but I was worried about permanent damage, so that’s why I quit.

      Depends
A young guy would want to keep his hair till he becomes 30~ then baldness would be more accepted for his age and he would have also had time to enjoy his hair, go to dates ect.
Personally I would start finasteride in about a week (I am 21) and I will continue treatment for about 1-3 years when until a new treatment arrives (there are some treatments in development)
Then I will change finasteride for the new treatment and I will keep doing this until baldness is officially cured either through hair cloning or topicals that regenerate hair through stem cells in the scalp

Testicular pain, and did have bad headaches the first week after taking the pill. I stopped because the side effects were right away. The craziest thing was I was significantly a lot more in the mood. It take some time to get back to normal after taking the pill, i advice to get blood work done first, I wanted to do it but I was impatient and just went for it, but always check with your doctor first to see if you are prone to side effects you’ll never have your baseline levels again although you feel “normal”

the thing is , if u stop taking the drug, hair loss will come back and taking finsateride for long term can put that 3% chance into acceleration. thats what i think. i am saying this cause i am 20 and i am losing my hair but i have a good amount of hair. and i can just get minoxidil and propecia and keep my hair . but the only reason i like my hair is because i think it makes me look better and once hair is gone girls wont like me. but the thing stopping me from taking drug is. this hair loss has put me in depression and trauma that, and if i go through it i coud possibly turn pain into something that is goonna make me fearless and a true Man.

you need to get your research right before you start making any decisions. Propecia is finasteride, Propecia is the brand and finasteride is the drug. So it doesn't matter which brand you choose, finasteride is finasteride and the thing that matters is the dosage. For hair loss you want to take no more than 1mg, the side effects are rare and a not a lot of long term studies have been done so your best bet is to ask around from people who have actually taken propecia or any other finasteride for a long time.
