Thank you for a great video with step-by-step troubleshooting of this issue. A quick suggestion for anyone reading this post and having this EVAP code issue. If you do not pump your own gas, before you buy a new gas cap, or consider any other repair, check to see that your gas cap was properly closed/tightened the last time you put gas on the car. I have had a loose gas cap trigger this code in a few occasions and the fix was as simply as to tighten the cap correctly. Thanks again.
Very good information. I have an 18 BMW 530xi and my engine sign is on. I'll be following this instruction to diagnose my car. Already ordered a new gas cap.
Got a PO456 code on my 2014 X5 which is stopping me from passing emissions. Just bought a new gas cap, hopefully the leak is there. Thanks for the guide!
Just subscribed as I really appreciate how you outline the possible issues and gave an honest suggestion on the gas cap. I need a great team I can trust in the Irvine or Orange County CA area. Any suggestions?
gotta mention that you will see a ton of smoke coming out of a black vent cylinder in your 328i that's normal. You have to disable the vent canister before you smoke test. I saw mine smoking and bought a new one. Do not do that. You have to back probe and ground pin 3 of the DMTL pump THEN test. Doing otherwise will cost you money and time.
Back probe is where you stock a metal implement usually a sewing needle or paper clip through the back of rubber insulation to keep the circuit intact. It actuates the valve. You’ll just be dumping smoke out the vent and not be troubleshooting if you skip this step.
Genuine question could any of these cause a rough start up? When I cold start my car it goes to regular RPMs but then dips below 800 rpms and then jumps to maybe 1600 rpms and kinda bounces a bit before returning back to regular.
Great information... My 2008 E90 335XI sedan had the Service Engine Soon light come on. It was reset, but the light came back on after about 10 days. Where would the Vapor Detection Pump and the Charcoal Canister be located on my 2008 BMW? I need to go to inspection this month and it couldn't be worse timing. Thanks and super well done video. A bad gas cap can cause the fuel goes into the canister? My e90 have a bad idle and is stalling every time I run. I disconnected the tank line of canister and a lot of gas was pump off. The canister is full of fuel too 😢
Quick heads up.... if fuel is coming out of the DMTL fiber filter it is most likely the fuel tank vent valve causing the issue. It's a complete bear to trouble shoot as it throws codes for other evap items. If the car will not fill up past a half tank and the throttle surges after filling up, or even stalls out completely, check the fuel tank vent valve.
so mines leaking from the middle of the gas cap and the canister. I need help i see the smoke in the middle doesnt come out the gas cap or the canister but it leaks in the middle
I went to the smoke test and found smoke pouring out of the dust filter that sits next to my charcoal canister on my E39. Does it sound like the filter is bad? Or do I have to crimp off or plug the connection to the filter? Many thanks.
If you don't have bi-directional scanner to close the Vent valve built into the Dm-tl, then remove the fitting coming out to the charcoal canister to the filter and Manually block to get a proper reading
So, is there not a DMTL vent valve within the BMW Evap system, which is open with the ignition off and the engine off. And when open, vents the evap canister to air? So if you run your smoke test as you indicate, and dont force this valve closed, then you will just get smoke coming out the vent rather than out the canister or its connections, or out the gas cap or out the fuel pump connection? Any insights appreciated as i am about to test the evap system on my E39 525i.
I'm getting the evap error code on my obd II ...is that the reason why when I pump gas it constantly clicks off the gas pump ? Takes me 10 minutes to fill my tank ! Anyone?
Im stuck man I hope you can help. I have a 2011 535i I have permanent code P149D with no CEL but code is there so I replaced the whole shutoff valve and have done several drive cycles and still no luck. Any suggestions?
My 2017 440i is pulling a P0446 code evaporative emission system. Says Vent control circuit. What and where is this circuit? How would I fix it? Thanks
awesome vid. I'm so tired of all those fantasy videos solving the problem by replacing the purge valve or canister vent solenoid. If they were the problem, the previous owners would've kept the car after replacing them the first 3 times instead of selling the car cheap.

What an awesome video! Very articulate and to the point with good knowledge!
Thanks for the video. That was really helpful, especially letting us know where you fed the smoke into. I hope you keep 'em coming. Cheers.

any updates on the cause of the P0456? was it the gas cap? i have similar issue on my 2015 X5
Any update?
Great video with exfellent description and explanation of the evap system.

What do you mean by “back probe?” Also when you say jump pin 3 are you disabling the dmtl pump?

How did you block off the vent on the leak detection pump to prevent smoke from leaking out.

I have a 2015 bmw x5 and there’s a small leak where the gas barely leaks from the front passenger door
After changing the gas cap, how to reset the fault code and warning light? Thanks.
What is the part that’s needed to fix that leak?
Thank you so much so helpful you just don’t know follow ing you and like
so mines leaking from the middle of the gas cap and the canister. I need help i see the smoke in the middle doesnt come out the gas cap or the canister but it leaks in the middle
Will a leaking gas cap cause a rough idle too???
is the fuel vent valve the same location for a 2014 bmw 335 I , xdrive , F30 ?
Great video! Is there any other way to clear the Service Engine Light if you do not have the diagnostic scanner?
I tried getting my light removed by the scanner but it came back after a few minutes
@@roggerily5519 buy a mhd Wi-Fi adapter and the license trust me bro it helps a lot
Remove negative battery terminal for 3-5 min, or just buy a 30 scan tool from Walmart works great
Mmm is it possible that when I’m testing it the smoke isn’t coming out of the gas tank when the cap is open because I have a full tank?

Having that same issues . How did you close the valve ?
Will it make it idle rough
thank you!!!

I’m having the same problem, I’m getting my car ready for emissions and the only monitor not ready is the Evap and Air.

check your fuses

I dont understand why u never smoke test it to see that it was never the cap?
Hi. Is there any chance to get the fuel-air mixture to lean code (118001) because of the EVAP leak? Thanks!

Is There possibly that fumes leak into the car??
And does this leak make your car worser
a $2 cigar will do just about the same. The cheaper, the better
