Hi Christian, I had a VW Tourag with a failed centre bearing. On acceleration the drive shaft would whip so badly it hit the floor panel sending my wife into panic mode. As usual with VW, no centre bearing replacement possible so the whole drive shaft had to be replaced. $1700 thank you!! I fitted the shaft and after many other problems (that occurred before this) I traded it on a Toyota Prado. Would you believe we've had no problems since!! You have all the skills, all the knowledge and all the tools - please don't be offended by this comment - but the videos would not be as enjoyable without Vera. She is magic. I replaced my drive shaft last summer on my LR3 V8 4.4L. My carrier bearing went out and even though you can buy the carrier bearing it's not replaceable...WHATEVER! My drive shaft was about $450 US. Awesome videos, you and the wife are totally cool.
Same happend to me. I wanted to replace the carrier bearing and could not get the shaft appart. I destroid the boot of the CV in the process. Then I found a RUclips video how to do it but it is very difficult. I I try it again, I will post a video.

I just changed the oil on my LR3 a week ago and happened to look at my driveshaft and the front and middle bearing rubber covers failed and were leaking grease all over everything in that unmistakable "ring of death" pattern. I am a longtime follower of the channel and was praying that you had a driveshaft replacement video, and am so happy you did! I just finished changing out everything and went on a short test drive before checking the torque again and putting the heat-shield back on. Here in the States I actually got a new OEM part for barely more than the Chinese aftermarket, something that's probably not an option for you guys in Germany! Thanks for the video, it's still helping people like me almost 3 years later!
A test drive without Vera! what were thinking? Anyway a long time ago a guy I worked with had a new Triumph Dolomite Sprint & for some reason the prop shaft (drive shaft as you call it) drop off at speed, it hit the road and came back up through the car floor between the seats leaving the car a write off. The moral of the story, check your bearings. Which I know you do. Thanks for the fun video. 👍
I heard about such stories before. This is more likely to happen with 1-piece propshafts (right name used here!) than with 2-piece shafts. Hope to never have such a failure.

I bought a cheapish propshaft about 5 years ago , I think it was about €250 and the genuine one was about €1000. After about 4 months the carrier bearing started to whine over 60km/hr. I packed the old bearing rubber with some strong marine silicone type sealer/glue and put it back on the Disco and it works great. Last year I got a bearing for the second propshaft but I couldn’t get it to fit. There appears to be no play in the bearing after using the sealer but it’s on the list , to buy a good quality propshaft soon.
I was going to do this too but idiot me tried to take the shaft appart and broke the boot of the center cv. I should have used Würth bond and seal silicone to fix the bearing but that idea came to late. I will keep the shaft because I expect the cheap one to fail soon. No way I would spend 1000€. I would rather fix it five more times.

Amazing piece of filming of the driveshaft on the Land Rover I'm surprised you didn't get any knocking high-speed or banging as you board away it shows how rugged Land Rovers are fingers crossed you don't get any more trouble but then again you won't have no videos to make lol take care both of you can't wait to see the next video . Hallo Christian und Vera. Am Anfang ein großes Lob für die perfekten Videos und die technische Anleitung bei diversen Problemen mit euerem LR Disco 3. Ich habe ein Problem, welches ich bis jetzt nach diversen Besuchen von mehreren LR-Werkstätten nicht loswerden kann. Während der Fahrt mit meinem LR Disco 3, TDV6, BJ 08/2008, Automatikgetriebe, Laufleistung 190 300 km spüre ich eine stark brummende Vibration im Bereich von 1500-1700 Umdrehungen/min und Geschwindigkeit zwischen 70-90 km/h. Bei niedrigeren und höheren Umdrehungen sowie anderen Geschwindigkeiten habe ich absolut keine Vibrationen. Heute habe ich die hintere Kardanwelle für eine neue in einer nicht autorisierten LR- Werkstatt austauschen lassen. Ich hatte eine große Hoffnung, dass dieses Problem verschwinden wird. Leider besteht das beschriebene Problem mit der Vibration nach wie vor. Habt Ihr vielleicht Paar Lösungen woran dieses Problem liegen kann? für Eure Hilfe wäre ich sehr dankbar Stan
Brought back memories of a driveshaft dropping off my RWD car at speed back in the 80s. Bonk! I just coasted a bit and got the car onto the verge. It was a cold night in the middle of nowhere, so when the towtruck turned up, we went and searched for the driveshaft. It was in the ditch by the side of the road. It was really heavy. I think the thing had actually broken off with metal fatigue - it needed replacing as I recall.
Wow what a story. Drive shafts got really light weight in recent years and improved in quality a lot. A CV joind in a propshaft will likely outlast the car. The weak points today are the center or carrier bearings. Thanks for your coment.
Hi Christian and Vera, loved this video. I have very slight vibration when moving off slowly most of the time on my 2007 HSE Automatic. I'm hoping it's the centre bearing on my prop shaft rather than my torque converter!? Keep up the fantastic content from, N.Wales UK 😊
The torque converter runs with the engine speed and the propshaft with axle speed. If you pay attention, you should be able to figure out where the vibration is comming from. Here are the gear ratios of the ZF 6 HP. You can see that there is no 1:1 ratio because otherwise the unbalance in the driveline would add to the unbalance of the crankshaft and torque converter. First 4.17:1 Second 2.340:1 Third 1.521:1 Fourth 1.143:1 Fifth 0.867:1 Sixth 0.691:1 Reverse 3.403:1

Hi Christian and Vera, thank you for this and all the other videos. Here I have a small technical English lesson for you : the driveshaft is the shaft between the differential and the wheel. The one that you've replaced (between the transfer-box and the differential) is called the propshaft. I hope this was helpful. Best Regards, David
In the Land Rover world you are 100% right. In British english the correct name is propshaft. For the rest of the world the comon name it is drive shaft. The shafts going to the wheels are called side shafts for most people ouside of the UK. I should have called it propshaft just like I am wearing trousers instead of pants and the car has a bonnet and not a hood. This is what I learnd so far from our viewers. Now there will be one more video about the drive shaft, taken last week. So don´t be surprised if I did not call it a propshaft. Will do better in future! Thanks for your coment!

It seems to me that the chinese propshaft needs a fine shim on it to take up that 0.26 difference between the LR one and the chinese; could you make something on your lathe?
After seeing that propshaft bouncing around inside the remains of the bearing, I think I would have abandoned the test-drive immediately. I'd happily ignore it for months but once I could SEE it, on camera, it'd terrify me! Glad to see Vera is biting back at you now. She's quite the master of snarky comebacks. :-P

Christian, please could you give me the dimensions of your garage pit and if there is anything you would change if you had an opportunity to build one again.
Our pit is 200cmx80cm, and it was 200cm deep originally. But we raised the bottom with a wooden construction up by about 40 cm. If we build a pit, we would put more effort into the entrance of the pit, getting in and out with a discovery above your head. It is quiet a hassel with ours. But it came with the house we bought. We didn't build it ourselves, so we are really thankful that we even have one.There is rock solid granite below our property, so digging deep is a major act. Christian really wants to get a hoist. Working in a pit, you really need someone, like me, handing you the tools down all the time. Doing it allone takes a lot more time. And with a LR 3, we spend a lot of time in the pit 😅🙋♀️ Vera

I am generally from time to time checking undercarriage to see the wear and tear of everything underneath. So, instead of replacing full driveshaft, I went to indie and replaced only bearing as driveshaft wasn't damaged yet, so far it's holding ok
Ow Christian, a fantastic video, but a little disappointed because i thought you whre going to change the centre bearing and not the whole driveshaft. .But in the meantime i was amazed about the fact that you where able to find a whole driveshaft incl. Bearing and cross couplers for under 200 eutos. Great job.
It came with the house. I think it was common that you did this in the 70's when the Garage was added. There are more houses in our area that have a pit build in during that time. 🙋♀️ Vera

New subscriber and loving both you and Vera you make me laugh I came across your videos after being offered a discovery 3 HSE 2007 with a 180k so needed to find out all about them and I think Christian you must be the worlds best land rover discovery expert love the videos love the humour Should I buy the discovery ?.?.😳
😅 Now, you have to be either able to fix it yourself, or have the money to have someone else fix it. As you may know by now, they are kind of high maintenance, and want to be pampered regularely. Also, get yourself a OBDii tool and learn how to use it. That way you can read out all the faults it has before buying, then you kind of know what repairs are waiting for you. Do not necessarily trust the owner blindly. They might even not know what kind of faults it has. Then check on the Disco3.co.uk website what they mean. Also know how it was used and what kind of maintenance has been done. Regular oil change, no more than 10000Km apart, EGR valves, reinforced oilpump, and the list goes on. Get yourself the LR3 maintenance schedule from the disco3.co.uk website and see if it has been followed. And let them show you the actual invoice, not just some check mark. If everything is all well, you got one great car to look forward to. 😃👍🙋♀️Vera

And I should know, as an Englishman living in France whilst working in an Arabic country, and owning a Discovery 4 .... all very confusing! Thank you. I purchased a replacement drive shaft yesterday but I fear it maybe a bit loose fitting as yours in given I purchased it for just over €100. I'll check if it is OEM otherwise, I may return.
Is that aftermarket shaft holding up? I have no heard good things about longevity of them. I myself went OEM which is GKN, bought from LR Direct for less than $400 USD.
Aftermarket is holding up just fine. We had our reasons back then going for the aftermarket shaft. But Christian works in the balancing industry, also closely with GKN, and still plan on fixing our old shaft. Just haven't had the time to do so. 😃👍🙋♀️Vera
I bought a genuine shaft from Rimmer Bros but it ended up being a different length than the shaft in my 2005. They sent the aftermarket shaft and it fit perfectly. I’d be interested to hear if anyone else had this issue trying to fit a genuine shaft.
There is only one shaft from LR called out in the spare parts list. The cheap one I used had that same reference number. I would guess that you just had bad luck. I assume they took the shaft back?

To be honest, we tried just replacing the center bearing, but we could not get the old bearing off without causing damage to the boot. And that boot is not available as a spare part. We know that there are videos where people do it, but I am not sure if that boot is sealed perfectly again. Yes, good luck trying. That was our plan of course too. But you have to remove a boot in order to remove the bearing, and that one did not come off, at all. We have tried, and the risk in damaging that boot and ruining a 1000€ propshaft was just too much. Even with careful chiseling, we do not believe that we could have gotten that boot to seal up again. That is why we opted short term for the chinese shaft and we will give the OEM shaft another try when we have a replacement boot. Christian has some connections due to his job. But we have heard from viewers who successfully replaced the bearing. But on our 15 year old shaft, there was no way. 👍🙋♀️ Vera
I'm about to do this but will be using stands - I've heard you should remove the air suspension relay before starting so that the suspension is already dropped when you begin otherwise it might try to level or drop when you're underneath. I would value your opinion!!!
We always, always, always take out the suspension fuse, always. We show this in every single video where we have to do this step ( at least I hope so). But, first we put in the right height, depending whether the car is easier to fix in access height or offroad height, or normal height. Again, always 😅👍🙋♀️ Vera
Hey LR TIME!! I have an issue with my LR3 (Discovery 3) where when driving, when let off the gas and then immediately hit it again, I have a clunk in the drive train. I’m wondering if that was the issue that you had that let to this repair. If not, what happened that indicated a repair being necessary?
We had no rotten bolts. All opened fine and we had them loose before. So without Vera and no filming it would be a 2h Job max. If you wreck a bolt head, you will commit suicide. Christian
Land Rover calls it a drive shaft in the workshop manual. And that is a fact and they are british. Christian works for the largest balancing machine on the planet as their driveshaft expert. He has forgotten more about driveshaft balancing than most people will ever know.

Our Disco has the plate DIRT44 and our Challenger has DIRT57. The DI stands for Dieburg which is the city where the car is registered. The Challenger is actually the RT trim level with the 5.7 L engine. So the DIRT57 has a different meaning than the DIRT44, obviously. Sorry for talking so much about the plates.
Yes, that is right. I do need to call it a drive shaft because it is called drive shaft in the Land Rover offical work shop manual. And that is a UK document. The name propshaft is most common in the UK except by Land Rover themself. In the US it´s called drive shaft. Land Rover calls the shafts between the wheels and diff side shafts. Vera calls it a propshaft too! Appreciate your comments and hope to hear more from you.
Your wife is a 1 in a billion I can tell you no wife or girlfriend helps their partner like this when it comes to working on the car, well not in the UK
15 years of exposure to the elements is a problem. We would have only replaced the center bearing if we could have gotten off the boot in order to seperate the shaft. We could have tried harder and deformed that boot while chiseling away, like many do on RUclips. But the risk that it will not seal up 100% was to high for us. So, rather than further damaging a 1000€ propshaft, we opted for a cheap chinese one until we have an adequate solution for our boot, or a spare one. Now Christian works in the balancing industry, specialicing in propshafts / driveshafts. So he does know when to stop trying. 👍🙋♀️Vera

Hi Christian and Vera, loved this video. I have very slight vibration when moving off slowly most of the time on my 2007 HSE Automatic. I'm hoping it's the centre bearing on my prop shaft rather than my torque converter!? Keep up the fantastic content from, N.Wales UK 😊
The torque converter runs with the engine speed and the propshaft with axle speed. If you pay attention, you should be able to figure out where the vibration is comming from. Here are the gear ratios of the ZF 6 HP. You can see that there is no 1:1 ratio because otherwise the unbalance in the driveline would add to the unbalance of the crankshaft and torque converter.

Second 2.340:1
Third 1.521:1
Fourth 1.143:1
Fifth 0.867:1
Sixth 0.691:1
Reverse 3.403:1

You both take such good care of your LR3, and this can as you say happen without you knowing it. It looked so bad I was cringing as I saw it shifting around. It makes you wonder what damage it could cause to have that play.

Hi Christian and Vera, thank you for this and all the other videos. Here I have a small technical English lesson for you : the driveshaft is the shaft between the differential and the wheel. The one that you've replaced (between the transfer-box and the differential) is called the propshaft. I hope this was helpful. Best Regards, David
In the Land Rover world you are 100% right. In British english the correct name is propshaft. For the rest of the world the comon name it is drive shaft. The shafts going to the wheels are called side shafts for most people ouside of the UK. I should have called it propshaft just like I am wearing trousers instead of pants and the car has a bonnet and not a hood. This is what I learnd so far from our viewers. Now there will be one more video about the drive shaft, taken last week. So don´t be surprised if I did not call it a propshaft. Will do better in future! Thanks for your coment!

It seems to me that the chinese propshaft needs a fine shim on it to take up that 0.26 difference between the LR one and the chinese; could you make something on your lathe?
After seeing that propshaft bouncing around inside the remains of the bearing, I think I would have abandoned the test-drive immediately.
I'd happily ignore it for months but once I could SEE it, on camera, it'd terrify me!

Hi Christian and Vera from South Africa. Thank you for a very entertaining and informative channel ... I only wish there was more than one video a week. Christian, please could you give me the dimensions of your garage pit and if there is anything you would change if you had an opportunity to build one again.
Our pit is 200cmx80cm, and it was 200cm deep originally. But we raised the bottom with a wooden construction up by about 40 cm. If we build a pit, we would put more effort into the entrance of the pit, getting in and out with a discovery above your head. It is quiet a hassel with ours. But it came with the house we bought. We didn't build it ourselves, so we are really thankful that we even have one.There is rock solid granite below our property, so digging deep is a major act.
Christian really wants to get a hoist. Working in a pit, you really need someone, like me, handing you the tools down all the time. Doing it allone takes a lot more time. And with a LR 3, we spend a lot of time in the pit 😅🙋♀️ Vera
You can use some shim material to tighten the fit on the UJ pilot. 👍

I am generally from time to time checking undercarriage to see the wear and tear of everything underneath. So, instead of replacing full driveshaft, I went to indie and replaced only bearing as driveshaft wasn't damaged yet, so far it's holding ok
I tried that too and could not get it separated. Now with the drive shaft out and a bit time, I will try again.
Ow Christian, a fantastic video, but a little disappointed because i thought you whre going to change the centre bearing and not the whole driveshaft. .But in the meantime i was amazed about the fact that you where able to find a whole driveshaft incl. Bearing and cross couplers for under 200 eutos. Great job.
I agree, this was a bit easy. There will be more down the road. But right now, the original shaft was smarter than me.

How come you have a pit in the garage? Did that come with the house or did you guys get it put in so that you can work on your cars?
It came with the house. I think it was common that you did this in the 70's when the Garage was added. There are more houses in our area that have a pit build in during that time. 🙋♀️ Vera

😅 Now, you have to be either able to fix it yourself, or have the money to have someone else fix it. As you may know by now, they are kind of high maintenance, and want to be pampered regularely. Also, get yourself a OBDii tool and learn how to use it. That way you can read out all the faults it has before buying, then you kind of know what repairs are waiting for you. Do not necessarily trust the owner blindly. They might even not know what kind of faults it has. Then check on the Disco3.co.uk website what they mean. Also know how it was used and what kind of maintenance has been done. Regular oil change, no more than 10000Km apart, EGR valves, reinforced oilpump, and the list goes on. Get yourself the LR3 maintenance schedule from the disco3.co.uk website and see if it has been followed. And let them show you the actual invoice, not just some check mark. If everything is all well, you got one great car to look forward to. 😃👍🙋♀️Vera

Is that aftermarket shaft holding up? I have no heard good things about longevity of them. I myself went OEM which is GKN, bought from LR Direct for less than $400 USD.
Aftermarket is holding up just fine. We had our reasons back then going for the aftermarket shaft. But Christian works in the balancing industry, also closely with GKN, and still plan on fixing our old shaft. Just haven't had the time to do so. 😃👍🙋♀️Vera

I bought a genuine shaft from Rimmer Bros but it ended up being a different length than the shaft in my 2005. They sent the aftermarket shaft and it fit perfectly. I’d be interested to hear if anyone else had this issue trying to fit a genuine shaft.
There is only one shaft from LR called out in the spare parts list. The cheap one I used had that same reference number. I would guess that you just had bad luck. I assume they took the shaft back?
Will I get away by changing the central bearing only if it goes bad without changing the whole shaft assy?

I found the amount of movement in the gearbox when you changed gear interesting, would this contribute to early failure of the centre bearing?

To be honest, we tried just replacing the center bearing, but we could not get the old bearing off without causing damage to the boot. And that boot is not available as a spare part. Yes, good luck trying. That was our plan of course too. But you have to remove a boot in order to remove the bearing, and that one did not come off, at all. We have tried, and the risk in damaging that boot and ruining a 1000€ propshaft was just too much. Even with careful chiseling, we do not believe that we could have gotten that boot to seal up again. That is why we opted short term for the chinese shaft and we will give the OEM shaft another try when we have a replacement boot. Christian has some connections due to his job. But we have heard from viewers who successfully replaced the bearing. But on our 15 year old shaft, there was no way. 👍🙋♀️ Vera
I'm about to do this but will be using stands - I've heard you should remove the air suspension relay before starting so that the suspension is already dropped when you begin otherwise it might try to level or drop when you're underneath. I would value your opinion!!!
We always, always, always take out the suspension fuse, always. We show this in every single video where we have to do this step ( at least I hope so). But, first we put in the right height, depending whether the car is easier to fix in access height or offroad height, or normal height. Again, always 😅👍🙋♀️ Vera

Hey LR TIME!! I have an issue with my LR3 (Discovery 3) where when driving, when let off the gas and then immediately hit it again, I have a clunk in the drive train. I’m wondering if that was the issue that you had that let to this repair. If not, what happened that indicated a repair being necessary?
There was no sign of this being broken. No drive line "clonk" at all. We found it because we did underbody repair.
Danan check the dif mounts at the rear. it does that on the freelander when the rear diff mount goes so would think it may be the same

How long did the job take?
We had no rotten bolts. All opened fine and we had them loose before. So without Vera and no filming it would be a 2h Job max. If you wreck a bolt head, you will commit suicide. Christian

I had the same issue in my Disco 3. It caused a strong vibration between 70-90km/h, so we replaced and the noise disappeared.
When you say noise, was it under acceleration but disappeared when you let off the gas?

Actually it's a rear prop shaft. ;) I would like to see a video where you change a propshaft. Front or rear doesn't matter.
Land Rover calls it a drive shaft in the workshop manual. And that is a fact and they are british. Christian works for the largest balancing machine on the planet as their driveshaft expert. He has forgotten more about driveshaft balancing than most people will ever know.

No, got the cheap one... I intend to fix the original one and keep as a spare.

You should put your Mustang number plate 'DIRT" on your Disco =)
Our Disco has the plate DIRT44 and our Challenger has DIRT57.
The DI stands for Dieburg which is the city where the car is registered. The Challenger is actually the RT trim level with the 5.7 L engine. So the DIRT57 has a different meaning than the DIRT44, obviously. Sorry for talking so much about the plates.

Yes, that is right. I do need to call it a drive shaft because it is called drive shaft in the Land Rover offical work shop manual. And that is a UK document. The name propshaft is most common in the UK except by Land Rover themself. In the US it´s called drive shaft. Land Rover calls the shafts between the wheels and diff side shafts. Vera calls it a propshaft too! Appreciate your comments and hope to hear more from you.

The LR3 is so well insulated. I think I would not have found this broken bearing ever.

Why not replace centre bearing? For you will be easy.
15 years of exposure to the elements is a problem. We would have only replaced the center bearing if we could have gotten off the boot in order to seperate the shaft. We could have tried harder and deformed that boot while chiseling away, like many do on RUclips. But the risk that it will not seal up 100% was to high for us. So, rather than further damaging a 1000€ propshaft, we opted for a cheap chinese one until we have an adequate solution for our boot, or a spare one. Now Christian works in the balancing industry, specialicing in propshafts / driveshafts. So he does know when to stop trying. 👍🙋♀️Vera
