    I must be your ideal viewer. I'm not a desktop mechanic, I never complain, I only have a vague idea what you are doing with not a clue as to whether it's done right or wrong (usually right, I'm guessing) and my eyes glaze over as I am watching like a baby enjoying a comforter. It's all so very relaxing in such a way that my own pathetic and fraught attempts at fixing vehicles and other devices never is.☺

      Germans have a great sense of humor like many other nations. The lack of fully understanding the language, culture is where myths are formed. A lot of colloquial talk and jokes are hard to translate into another language in a meaningful way.

      If it breaks, we will buy a new OEM one here in Germany. In 2020, when we installed the cheap chinese, the OEM was more than a 1000€, most likely thanks to Corona lockdown. That is why we went aftermarket. And we spent a fortune on other repairs just before. All documented in videos. 👍🙋‍♀️

      I have a 23 year old Disco 2 with 197,000 miles. I haven't done nearly this much maintenance on it during it's long life (I bought it new). The worst problems were leaking oil (re-did the seals) and the dreaded "three amigos" ABS fault but that was more than 10 years ago.
      I think the Disco 3 and 4 that Christian and Vera own are more complicated and more failure prone.

    Christian, I love your Landrover videos, you obviously are a very well versed engineer, I love your funny playfully banter & how clear you are with instructions, also most importantly how thorough you are with measurements & labour. It really doesn't suprise me that you get muppets question & try to correct your work, truth be told most mechanics here in devon in the Uk haven't got the faintest idea on how to work on engines or auxiliaries & end up giving you a miss diagnosis so you end up changing a part that doesn't need changing. So just carry on doing the perfect job your doing, both educational & entertaining😊

    I think you should have put another sticker on the other side of the shaft as well as another arrow on the opposite side and pointing the other way to keep the balance precise. JB Weld is a great sealer, well done. I hope you distributed it very carefully and then machined it so its COG is concentric with the shaft. You should keep it spinning on stands while stationary so the dust doesn't settle on one side. I wouldn't expect less.

    @clivestainlesssteelwomble7665 9 месяцев назад

    My father worked for GKN in their oldest factory ...its now a hospital..
    They began making Mechanical fasteners.. Millions of them ... If youve ever had to work with sub standard Nuts bolts and screws you can tell the difference almost instantly. Same with the original posi and superdrive screwdrivers they dont chew up even after decades.
    Hardy Spicer was the drive shafts and CV joints division..
    The metal the tooling and the bearing qualities i would always find a differences with when re building my old Ford based kit cars.
    I replaced all the void bushes with Polyurethane or S.Steel and nylon uk made sports items rubber ones just disintegrated in a year or 18 months. When they got warm they went soft ...next step they would break up then came the dreaded clunks and strange handling 😬.
    Its always grim when the bean counters start running the engineering works top down.

      Brushing the calipers (and rusty bits of discs and suspension arms, and chassis members, and fuel tank, and and) with Frameto (or other rust converter) gives a nice satin black finish which lasts a long time. Easy to do, easy to refresh without too much cleaning beforehand - not like painting! Try it, you'l be surprised

    Another technical land rover repair by Christian. DIY nice. I was home this weekend in texas. calvary Overland is a texas overlanding community that brings overlander together that features all kinds of builds, mainly Jeeps & toyota, which builds a few Land rovers they do a few 7 days overlanding adventure trips a year cost around 800 this includes all meals a few work shop on overlanding. At this event, in plano, tx at lexus dealership sponsored this event. Lexus was showcasing the new 4x4 ineos grenadier full time 4x4. I like it but 75k ouch, not for the working man. I be dead and gone before I be a.be to buy a used one. I didn't know the history of how the grenadier came to life this isn't a land rover, it a private car manufacturer who didn't like the new defender he want to buy the defender rights land rover said no and he started his version of a defender 😮 wow . To be honest its a awesome idea brought to life . If i had to choose between the Land Rover 110 vs. ineos grenadier 🤔 im going with Land Rover 110 for many reasons where the start company might not be around in the future. Then you end up with a paper weight

    The 'Desktop Mechanics' comments crack me up every time because they are SO true! No matter what you are doing and how experienced you are there will always be someone who says "Ah well what you did wrong there was ...."
    Keeping the old propshaft was a master stroke as it saved a lot of money and you got back the very best GKN quality. But the Chinese part did OK for the money.
    Don't despair too much about GKN because they are a huge British business. Yes the Automotive manufacturing was concentrated outside the UK by Melrose Hedge Fund the owners for reasons that made sense to only them but the Aerospace business has 8 sites in the UK and one, for example, does carbon fibre construction for Airbus especially for all Airbus wings which are completed at Airbus in Wales. GKN UK enabled Airbus to have the shape and efficiency (and size!) of the carbon fibre A380 wings.

    My non-franchised LR/4X4 garage replaced my entire LR3 prop-shaft last year because the centre joint was worn. He insisted on replacing the entire shaft with OEM. By the time he would have changed just the centre bearing and risked the Joints failing, it just wasn’t worth just replacing the centre joint.
    He has tried it many, many times.
    I don’t want to sound like a desktop mechanic, but I once wrecked a lorry prop-shaft by reassembling it one spline tooth out. This happened within 10 miles!

  • @jdenmark1287

    It’s not the sticker that throws off the balance it is the fact you didn’t paint while evenly rotating the driveshaft to ensure an even coating of paint. That will really ruin the balance 😅.

    • @Vera_and_Christian

      They are painted after balancing without control of the rotation. Christian

    Great Job!! That looks perfect! If they Giant Heat Shrink tubing, then maybe whiles its 2 parts, add a wide ring of heat shrink as a extra layer. I am thinking it would act as a boot. :)

    • @Vera_and_Christian
      @Vera_and_Christian  9 месяцев назад

      You said it, it's two parts, and a heatshrink is not going to keep it together. So there is metal bending involved before anything is applied for sealing. And that step is what we are not showing, yet. 😃👍🙋‍♀️

    and just to confirm - have ALL of the weird knocking/clicking noises now gone away?

    • @Vera_and_Christian
      @Vera_and_Christian  9 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, it was the propshaft only. It finally broke enough, (right after an almost 2000km trip I took without Christian), so we could source the cause under normal driving conditions. Up until then, you could only get it to clonk in low gear when it is extremely steep. We do not have that kind of a driving codition anywhere close here, so we just waited until it broke enough.🙄😅 One clonking source can have you think your car will fall apart any minute. Like it was when I had my spare wheelbearing rolling around inside. 😅👍🙋‍♀️

    I am sure your prop shaft repair will outlast the old Chinese prop where it looked like the splines had simply worn out. Made of cheese but as it gave you 3 years you can't complain . I think I used silkaflex to seal mine and it's been fine for over 2 years already. You should look for the Gruffalo centre bearing in the field repair using tie wraps and rubber pipe cut to short lengths held in place 👍 as for the sticker throwing the balance out it will simply compensate for being 1 spline out 😂👍amazing stuff you guys gathered too. I love old tools like that which were built to last and they can still produce excellent results today. See you next week.

      Sikaflex 221 applied to the rear section of the centre bearing. Fill the whole space; did my 2005 TDV6 at 360k, now 420k. Resilience of the 221 is amazing.

    • @Vera_and_Christian
      @Vera_and_Christian  9 месяцев назад +1

      He showed it to us and we also have a extremely good trail hack. But the center bearing, as in the ball bearing was worn, creating noise, not the rubber part. In the center bearing there is an actual ball bearing which needed to be replaced. Often times, only the rubber part is broken, which can be trail repaired. 👍🙋‍♀️
