- We were looking for a interesting log to saw for you to make a Friday eve video and Eddie had found a spalted Sycamore log , hope you enjoy! We have a online store at markgaliciccha...
Besides the new edger, “Chewy” is my favorite piece of equipment in your sawmill! It is a durable, low-maintenance piece of equipment that saves enormous amounts of sawing time and labor. Keep everything about “Chewy” just the way it is. Thanks Mark and Eddie for another great visit to the sawmill!
thanks Randall.
Everybody loves a mystery log. 🪵
yes they do.
If folks don't like Chewy they need to get on the short end of a long hook and turn logs by hand for a while. Happy weekend Guys and God Bless.
thanks Lewie , that would teach them for sure lol.
Like the son in law of a neighbor of the scalawag flat belt mill sawyer that got snagged into off-bearing. He said the 1st 15 minutes was interesting but the rest was just pure hard slavish work.@@markgalicic7788
Hi Mark and Eddie, greetings from East Yorkshire in the UK . . .
I've worked out MG's Philosophy! : If it moves talk to it, if it doesn't, cut it up!
I like it lol.
Looks like it's a little punky but it did hold together you guys cut logs that turn out amazing looking forward to the next logs you pick out 😊👍
thank you.
Knifemakers won't care how solid it is... they'll stabilize it anyways
that would make a great knife handle.
hi there nice wood , john
thanks John.
So spalting is one step away from rotting wood ?
yes it is.
it’s the 22nd of february here in mi 50degrees saps flowing great vid
thanks , we are going up in the 60s next week.
soft wood can be hardened. under vacuum, the air comes out and once the vacuum is removed the hardener gets sucked in.
Like seeing the same log being cut from both directions thanks to you and Eddie.
thanks David glad you like it.
Without the shag bark, and with the twisting on the outside of the log, it almost looks like Eucalyptus, something you won't see in Pennsylvania. Plentiful out here in California as wind breaks in agriculture areas. Generally not cut for lumber, but is used as firewood when cut at all. Thanks for the videos, yours and Eddies. Jon
thanks Jon.
Ive turned softer and spaltedwoods before as long as you are careful, it should be okay as a very art looking item!
That was some purdy wood.
thanks Daniel.
Nov. 2018..an EF0 hit my neighborhood and took down 4 oaks in my yard. I tried to give it away as firewood, very few takers. Time goes by and I decide to just cut it up and burn it. Made the 1st cut and the wood had spalted a bit. It stopped me in my tracks, no way I'm going to burn this. My wife said, "Why don't you build a butcher block top for the island? (in my kitchen)" That wood has turned into my woodworking hobby money pit, but MAN I love it! That hobby turned into watching a guy in Pennsylvania with a sawmill cutting the wood (on a much larger scale) like I was trying to do on a used Craftsman band saw. That guy in Pennsylvania got me to buy my own sawmill so I can make my own boards for my woodworking projects. So in a roundabout way, spalted wood led me to your channel. Have watched every video since.
thanks for the great comment! Happy sawing Dave.
Good evening from Lincolnshire UK.
good evening Andrew.
Praying that Mark is doing fine with his eye surgery......
If it's not "punky", I would love to use that grain for a Jewelry or Keep Sake box.
Hi Mark, great little video. I have a question on sawmills. Your sawmill cuts from right to left but other videos of sawmills cut from left to right. Is there any advantages in one over the other or is it just a personal preference? Could you change the direction on yours if you wanted?
we have a right hand mill but I have never ran a left hand mill , you cant change the direction of a mill without a lot of modification such as changing the saw guide and board splitter and if it was a handset mill you would have to move the set works.
Nice as always guys..ty and keep em coming :) Sycamore does have a nice grain pattern, reminds me of Ambrosia Maple a little :) Thanks
thanks Barry.
Mark: "My son Alex is looking for a bar top.".....not for a home bar, just to pass out on in public. I'll stick to spalted peanuts. Be happy with the warm Feb. weather, but don't complain if there's a cold snap in May.
thanks Rich lol!
I must apologize for not watching your videos. RUclips’s ad policy has obviously changed many times without consultation or negotiation. Currently RUclips is making me watch two 15 second ads at 7 1/2 minute intervals. previously, I had the option to skip the ads after five seconds. This is not the case anymore. Of course I could pay RUclips $19 a month for ad free versions. Please understand that I do not do this because RUclips has stopped sharing income with various Content Creators that I enjoy watching. Additionally, RUclips has decided to give grief to various Content Creators, that I watch, for telling the truth.
I have sent a complaint to RUclips via one method that I have found. In this complaint, I told RUclips that their greed was showing, and that their selfishness was rampant. Please understand that your channel is not a waste of my time. The ads RUclips forces on me are a waste of my time and headspace.
That is some beautiful spalted lumber. The other side to the "no one calls you back about orders" is then you turn around and get inundated with orders. The old feast or famine problem. During these down time between orders, you could also get caught up on making dunnage for the mill, more slab wood boxes (just cut the lumber) with whatever really ugly worthless logs that are in inventory.
thanks , yes that's how it goes.
Always enjoy your videos and learning from you. Enjoy the better weather soon and looking forward to your next installment
thanks John.
I'm thinking The PA mammal, Phil, was correct this year. Early Spring.
it looks like it lol.
As always, nice to see you in action once again with the whole crew. Don't you love the just because logs, especially when they are this good looking?
thanks Robert.
I reckon the other Edmiston mill is "Sawmill Pimp" He's about 8 or 10 miles from me. And actually the Edmiston company is only 10 or 15 miles from here also. By the way I appreciate the shout outs. And last thing is if you decide to sell the "Swinging Saw" after you do get a new slab cutter, I'd sure be interested in it. Take care!, Shannon
yes I do watch him and the other channel is @nicholssawmillandmore and they have a Edmiston mill also , if we ever do sell the swing saw I will let you know.
It’s marble wood, it’s expensive wood
It's kinda neat seeing the process after the sawing is done on Eddie's channel first then see this on your channel before you see the treasures inside. Variety is the spice of life. It is very pretty.
thanks Anthony.
I loved the Spalding and character in this log. Find more of them, Eddie.
thanks Karen , Eddie did good!
😎😎😎wood! Thanks for sawing it!
your welcome.
Nice wood . I liked Eddie's comment ," Except the mill."
thanks David , I like it.
Thats really cool looking my brother makes professional knives for chefs and butchers, he loves this for using as handler, wold look great, owesome job mark
thanks , I would love to see some of his work.
That is pretty wood
Don't have those in Enumclaw
this is the first for us.
I’m baffled. I’ve been subbed for ages and still don’t understand why you put the dogs so close to the edge when you’re sawing several inches from them? Surely it’s safer to have them further from the edge for a “meatier” grip? Great channels both you and T.H.E Eddy. Thanks.
I'm not sure that I follow. It can't be seen, but there are dogs from underneath as well as from above - creating a pincer connection to the log/cant at each headblock.
I made a smoking pipe out of spalted maple.. Wonderful look.
that would be nice.
Why do u cut the logs down?? Is it to size them for orders?? If not wouldn't it be nice to cut the logs at full length???
the butt was rotted out.
Today's the 22nd and I'm seeing and thank you for taping it on my birthday on the 21st thanks guys 😁 i Gottfried ( Godfreed)
I'm Gottfried
Happy Birthday!
I already watched the tail end,and couldnt wait to watch the front end!
enjoy!
i was watching another small mill and he had 2 chewys, one was on the carriage so he could roll logs both ways.
that would be fun to saw with.
Watched this on eddies channel what a beautiful surprise when you opened it thanks for sharing
your welcome William.
Noticed the cleanliness. Using the blower lol looks good
yes it's a big help.
Another great sawing video. Thanks Mark and Eddie.
thanks Jerry.
Mark, Team, hugs from Brasil.
thanks Everton.
In one word... " Beautiful ".
thanks.
I'm in Oklahoma and it is in the 70s and 80s.
that sounds good.
Good video Bus Motor Productions
thanks James.
Love that spalting in that log!
thanks Rob , it was pretty.
ty
What causes spaltig
Fungi in the wood, mostly happens after the tree dies, leave it too long and it rots, almost like this log has.
Edmiston, mills manufacturers. Back in the early 80s my Boss hired a sole and transport heavy hauling company for pump repairs. This company would drive into a thickest green belts-culverts to pick up ftom pump houses Around Canada ( wilderness) . Some shipping and recovery did not go as planned, and he would first call for inspections becuse our Forklift operator had a nasty set of fork extensions. And could place a long load expertly onto any truck or trailer.😅 please delet if inappropriate. Thanks.02 22 2024.
When are you going to do a shop video?
when I get back in the shop very busy now.
Why so many old, old, old, old logs? Worked at a sawmill for 5 years, never sawed a single old, spalted, nearly worthless log. What am I missing?
a production sawmill buys logs with some requirements.
The local supplies for these guys is more of arborists offering the odd stuff.
odd stuff is everything not Oak as firewood is the primary wood for them
Here in So. Jersey pines, the pine trees are junk wood, have a guy in town who fills dumpsters to haul it away. softwood is junk to them
That's gold for a fine woodworker who knows how to handle it.
Absolutely love these videos some people listen to podcasts for bed time I watch you guys saw wood lol, true inspirations all of you to get up and go, keep up the hard work, and thank you.
Lovely Friday video.
thanks Kevin.
Different grain.
kind of neat.
Great video buddy 👍
thanks Willard.
Always different, always the same. Perfect.
❤❤❤❤
thanks Sharon.
Sycamore maple tree bark is smooth and gray. As the maple tree matures, the bark becomes rougher and scaly. As with most species of sycamore or maple trees, the bark peels, giving the trunk a patchy appearance. It’s sycamore the “yellowing” on the 2” slabs gives it away. Maple (Species of Acer) will remain more whitish even if heavily spalted.
yes true that's the only way we could tell what it was after sawing.
I know many people want F&S clear lumber and I do too. But I used slightly spalted maple tongue & groove on my vaulted ceiling in the living room. It never fails to draw comments from visitors. Most think its beautiful, as do we👍
that would look great!
Hello from over here in England. Having watched lots of your videos and being a subscriber, I can’t understand why there are so many saw marks on the timber. The blade goes so quickly I would have thought that the timber would be very smooth.
This isn’t a criticism, I just find it intriguing.
It was much better when the blade was brand new. It's the second law of thermodynamics.
That is spalted sycamore. Fair amount was rotten/dodie. If you Quarter saw Sycamore, it is far more attractive. Had you sawn mantle pieces with it, the $$$ is much more attractive for you. I’m curious, what part of the country are you located?
I think they’re near Pittsburg.
Six o’clock in the morning old habits die hard been up an hour , been out with the dogs and they found an otter watched it for a while and they chased a cat on the way back good job dogs can’t claim trees , nice splattered sycamore remember as an apprentice company used to send it for furniture making think the firm was called ercol, any way you guys have a nice day
thanks Alex.
hello Mark & Eddies & it's is Randy and i like yours video is cool & Mark & Eddies Thanks Friends Randy
thanks Randy , BOOM!
Was it Helmsburg Sawmill you were watching? The have a circular mill with two edger blades before the big blade.
no it was @nicholssawmillandmore.
So...i guess spalted wood gives a 'thunk' instead of 'boom'...🤔😄
yes a good way to put it lol.
nice ty
thanks.
The punky slab wood is great to break up in chunks and then use in a bee smoker. They burn for a long time and produces a nice cool smoke
great idea.
Sawmill pimp has the other mill like yours
Sycamore warps and twist badly with out quarter sawing
it can.
Isn't this wood already half-rotten, sir? What's the point of printing it, won't you incur operational costs because the wood can't be used as material? Greetings to the woodworkers from the Republic of Indonesia 🇮🇩
"Когда коту делать нечего, он яйца лижет"🤣
it was a little rotten on the outside but not too bad.
You don't take the teeth off a gator lol😂😅
Fun stuff!
Those occasional gems make interesting pieces.
we like to put a random log on the mill to see what we get out of it.
If you were closer I have some logs that need to be sold my area is getting hard to find somebody to do it
I would like that.
Nice wood. I could carve some beautiful ducks out of that.
it's soft for carving.
Nice looking log! Really clean. I think I like Sycamore 😀
thank you.
Rubber tips on chewy is like eraser’s on both ends of your pencil… won’t mark up the paper.🥸
good one lol.
It's a sycamore log
Ok, how does a tree become spalted? Damn beautiful. Conference table would look great.
fungi in the log.
As a tree starts the dying process, fungi is introduced to the blood veins in the wood. That produces the beautiful black striping in the grain. Cutting spalted wood can be tricky. There's a perfect period of when to cut it. Too soon and there will not be much spalt. Too late and the fungi will have made the wood mushy (rotten). Cutting spalted wood is a rare occasion.
Interesting wood but pretty, Mark. I notice the third loader arm is still hooked up.
Bill
yes it's still hooked up for now .
@@markgalicic7788 Watching Eddie made me think (that's dangerous in itself). Since you don't have orders, could you saw the batten strips for your sawdust building?
Very nice stuff guys. Cool looking wood!
thanks Tim.
Thank you for another great video. Cheers
your welcome Steve.
is that an Amazon warehouse behind you?
no sir.
interesting log
My understanding sycamore is a hard wood
it's a softer hardwood.
That last piece could be a nice mantle.
yes it would.
Going to be negative 20 here next week.
we are going to warm up to the 60sF next week.
Nice grain on that log.
yes it was.
The words of yogi bear looks more like a sycamore to me. Lol
I like it lol!
I've scoured the internet numerous times looking for that cartoon - to no avail.
Nice looking log
thanks Graham.
..............hi
Hi.
