One thing to understand is that vinyl is basically made up of polyester fibers coated in a layer of plastic (usually either PVC or polyurethane). If you’ve never cleaned vinyl seats, it’s actually not too difficult to clean as compared to leather, but there are a few things you will want to keep in mind.
Take a look at these three simple remedies you can use to soften old vinyl seats with products you may already have. Keep in mind that I have not tried all of these, and it’s best to use your own judgment depending on how affected the vinyl is.
Before Applying Products to a Vinyl Surface
Before you attempt to apply any of these oil-based products, it’s probably a good idea to clean the surface of the seat to remove any dirt or grime that has probably accumulated over time. Here are a few products you can try that are effective:
Simple Green. There is a product called Simple Green that you may want to purchase on Amazon that is ideal for cleaning dirty vinyl before conditioning. You can check the cleaning instructions on their website here.
Soap and Water. Another homemade remedy is to simply use distilled water and a soap mixture. Apply using a soft brush (my favorite is a toothbrush), or a soft cotton applicator pad. If your seats are relatively clean already, this is probably your best bet. The idea is just to remove contaminants to ensure when you apply any oils, they don’t get absorbed into the vinyl.
Bleach mixture. It’s always important to be super careful when dealing with bleach, and should only be used in extreme cases for seats that have been left outside and have obvious staining you are trying to removing. It’s best to test a small area of the seat before proceeding with a bleach mixture at a 1:1 ratio.
Once everything is clean and wiped down, make sure the vinyl surface is dry before proceeding.

I had a couple of good sized cracks in my leather SUV seat. One of the cracks needed a backing to repair. The J-B Weld was the least expensive, had okay reviews, so I thought I would try it... would have sent it back if it didn't perform. I was VERY pleasantly surprised when it worked just as advertised. I followed the directions exactly, and I am very happy with the results. Hopefully it will last!

JB Weld makes a vinyl kit? Or did you just use regular JB Weld and the repair is not for matching purposes but to glue up hole? Thanks

I have tears starting to show in my seats from my 17 year old car. They are leather seats but there vinyl areas. That is where the rips are starting to appear and they are spreading. I always am a J-B Weld fan. I have used their products everywhere in my home repairing things that I thought could not be salvageable. The adhesive in the J-B Weld Leather and Vinyl repair does work to stop the rips from spreading when you use a backing. I actually found some left over fabric in a similar color to my car seats. That worked well with the adhesive to repair rips where I do not have to mix and add color filler. In one area, where I did have I mix filler, it was tricky to get the color to match the car seat perfectly. I found an online tool where you upload a picture of your material, it would give you suggestions on what colors to mix and how much to match it to the material in the picture. But my still came out too dark compared to the car seat. If the filler ever comes off by itself, I might try to mix a lighter batch again. But at this point I am happy with it. After all, it is a 17 year old car and this is a $10 fix. Stopping the rips from spreading was my main concern anyways. That part worked well.
