You don't have to fight to be a man, but sometimes you do have to fight when you are a man. Pretty much explained healthy masculinity in a song. And you're right. You should fortify your mind and body to be there for those you love. This is the way, my man.

"But you could've heard a pin drop when Tommy stopped and locked the door." Probably heard this song a thousand times but this line still gets me. "The Gambler" is hands down my favorite Kenny Rogers song for painting a mood and state of mind and "Ruby" from his First Edition days for its gut wrenching poignancy.

Kenny has several great story songs like this. "The Gambler' & 'A fine time to leave me Lucille' are perfect examples. For a beautiful song, check out 'Lady' or 'Through the years'. He is also a GOAT of country. One of my earliest encounters with country. He actually used to be in a pop group in the 60's called 'The first edition'. He has some great duets with Dolly Parton too.

One of my favorite pastimes is watching Men react to this song because when they get to the chorus they always pause and say it is so true you don't have to fight to be a man. Then they listen to the next chorus and I love watching the transformation. One of the beautiful thing about men is they have an inner cape. It's what I've always described it to my family... My husband and I have five sons. Men just have this line you don't cross and when you do they get fire their eyes and it almost always involves hurting women or children. I personally believe it is a gift of God and it's beautiful to behold

If someone starts a fight and they show you that they’re not gonna let you walk away if you have a chance, put them down and keep them down But always try to walk away because it doesn’t mean you’re man because you had a fight.

Kenny Rogers recorded a Lionel Richie written song "Lady" that made Lionel Richie (All Night Long, Hello) question his sanity. He did two duets with our queen Dolly Parton (the single of the year "Islands in the Stream" and my favorite "Can't Make Old Friends"). He was the Gambler in song and film. He was Brewster in Six Pack, a film that featured his "Love Will Turn You Around" as its theme song. Later in his career, he camem out with "The Greatest", which brings emotion to anyone who has had a young child and "Buy me a Rose", which makes every woman want their husband to HEAR the lyrics!

Love Kenny Rogers music from when he was with the First Edition (60's-70's) to his solo career. He was a great story teller in many of his songs like "Coward Of The County" & "The Gambler". He had so many hits "Lucille", "Lady", "Through the Years", "She Believes In Me" etc. He did a lot of duets such as with Kim Carnes "Don't Fall In Love With A Dreamer", with Sheena Easton "We've Got Tonight" & with Dolly Parton "Islands In The Stream". He also did quite a few duets with Dottie West.

My husband started karate at 14 years old just to channel his energy. When I met him at 23 years old, he was a 3rd degree black belt instructor. He has also become proficient in Krav Maga. We grew up in the Southern USA and are both expert marksmen, but he still feels hand to hand combat is a necessary skill. With you having daughters, he would definitely approve. He took down a home invader when we lived in Miami with one kick.

You've commented on the storytelling - and for sure Kenny was a master artist.
But he also had one of the smoothest soulful voices ever. He was an amazing performer, singer-songwriter, and good actor too. My mom was in love with kenny -my whole life I grew up with him. I've seen him live 3 times.
And his music crossed over different genres - he's wasn't just country - he was top 40 and adult contemporary. Just a true artist beloved across generations and genres.
Other songs by Kenny with a great story feel that you would love:
The Greatest, Lucille, Ruby, The Last Ten Years, 20 Years Ago, and my personal favorite "Love Will Turn You Around".

There is a wonderful video of Kenny and Lionel singing the song together late in Kenny's life. BTW, have you reacted to any of the classic R&B, Funk, Soul, etc. (e.g. Commodores)? This song should be required listening for kids in middle and high school. Most may tune it out but some will absorb its wisdom. In an age when so many sons grow up in fatherless homes, it's sad that the songs the majority of them listen to are devoid of the wisdom and life lessons that country music provides.

They made a TV movie based on this song. When I was a kid, I didn't understand the "taking turns at Becky" part. I thought they just came over & slapped/beat her up. It wasn't until years later when I hear it again as an older teen that it clicked in my brain what really happened. Wait... WHAT?!?! OH HELL NO! I wanted to go kick some Gatlin boys' asses myself!
OK, now you have to check out "Lucille" by Kenny Rogers... Another great story put to music. Kenny himself said it's a "great beer drinkin' sing-a-long song that everyone can join in". It's true, I first heard it as a kid & didn't really pay attention to the lyrics, but me & my friends would belt out the main chorus every time it played on the radio "You picked a fine time to..." That's all I'll say for now, so as not to give "spoilers" on what the song is about. Please check it out soon - you wont regret it, I promise.

Hated Country and Southern Rock but now I like it all. I particularly like to watch you discover Country. I heard you say on one of your videos that you probably didn’t like Country music because of peer pressure.I think that may have been the same for me.

Thank you so very much for this Seb's!!! I would ride in the car with my mom and dad when I was a kid and hear this song, didn't really know what it meant then. Not till a couple months ago, really, I was there a country mood and got the real meaning. I Grew up on country, and I could tell you every song from 1990 on back. However, I do not really get into the new country. I think they try to sell records by telling sad stories without the raw and real emotion. What I mean by that is, they are not really relating to their music. They are only telling a sad story, and that's OK. But like in the Jamie Johnson video, when you said, how can he possibly laugh at such a tragic situation. Well, it's because they lived it, and they had overcome all that tragedy. And they're singing about it. So that makes it really real. Personal and raw, like life!!!!! Much love to you all!!!!!!! ♥ ♥

I agree! I love the old stuff. Haven’t kept up on the new stuff like I did as a teen, but found some good new artists who write like the Kenny and others did. Cody Johnson (several singles like Human) and Hunter Hayes (Blue Sky album as a recent one) come to mind first for those types. No problem either way but I really appreciate the old school storytelling aspect so glad you enjoy it too!

When Tommy stopped and lock the door it was his version of saying I am not locked in here with you but that you are locked in here with the demon the dark side of me.

They made of movie from this song, to be made in the early 80s it was actually a pretty dang good movie. I'd like to see the movie remade honestly but still worth a watch

About filling your fatherly duties I think that you will find that if it ever come to it you will do just fine because that is what fathers do. I am 71 years old now and would have a hard time counting the number of times I was forced into a corner and had to resort to blows. Most were over my daughters being mistreated (I didn't raise them to be anyone's punching bag); I tried to never be the first to swing but made it my job to be the last one swinging. And to this day my grown daughters know that if there is anyway that I can get near enough to anyone that has put hands on them I may get my butt beat down but it would not be because I didn't try.
