Kind of important to mention that this isnt new by any means, the rulers have been meddeling in this process for a long time. This time it's just more coercive. Chinese emperors usually "helped" when the panchem or dalai lama couldnt do it on their own.
Yes! Rulers have struck the hands of Catholic School students since time immemorial. And the Nuns wielding them look so much alike, that they may be older without reincarnation than civlilizations. And Olympians have been medaling (note the spelling, before meddling further with your keyboard) since ancient Grease slipped away.
Why didn't you mention the Panchen Lama? It's kinda a huge part of the selection process and very relevant as the Chinese government kidnapped the child the Dalai Lama chose as the 11th Panchen Lama and have chosen their own one.

@@marczhu7473 keep telling yourself that. Fire Nation is China. China is called Red China for a reason. And since when did Japan attack Tibet? They didn't China did.
It really makes you appreciate the fragility of our generation when you realize that both the dalai lama and the queen of england have been around since before a lot of us were born and still going
Heinrich Harrer, a great Austrian Eiger climber of the late 1930s had escaped to Tibet, and was biden to teach the young Dalai. He wrote "Mein Leben am Hofe des Dalai Lama" before queen Lizzie- though she was a better looking reincarnation of Hank VIII's daughter back in 1500s. And Gilgamesh was also born before a lot of us. My brother is so fat that I don't give him a day after the Fall of Burger King, so don't gauge your lifetime as very long, until after that happens.
For those interested: this current reincarnation system was first introduced by Qing dynasty after seeing its troublesome nature during Yuan and Ming time and has been a tool for central government to control tibet since the day it was invented.
John Man’s biography of Kublai Khan states that the Yuan Dynasty created the position of Dalai Lama because of the infighting between regional Tibetan Lamas. They wanted one Lama to represent them all. The dates match up, and Dalai is the Mongol word for Ocean, used metaphorically as of the many. If that’s true, then there is a precedent for Chinese governments manipulating the appointment.
The struggle against Sinocization in Tibet goes back centuries. Basically Tibet is the Poland of Asia, disappearing from the map in 1720, reappearing in 1912 and again disappearing in 1951 In 1720 the Imperial Qing government launched an expedition into Tibet under the pretext of defending it from a common enemy. Tibet was soon annexed afterwards. But Tibet didn't accept Qing rule resulting in a revolt in Lahsa in 1750 which the Qing brutally put down. Tibet struggled with Qing rule off and on until the fall of the Qing. Tibet was able to recover it's national sovereignty with the assistance of the world's strongest military at the time, the British Empire. Who utilized it's geo strategic position as a buffer state. Despite the security guarntee from the British Empire Tibet never became a colony. Likewise it also never achieved de jure status of international recognition instead being able to achieve the de facto status. This would severely limit the Tibetan struggle in the future. After WW2 the UK couldn't continue with its security commitment to Tibet and recalled its troops. Tibet was left without any international recognition but the Chinese were still occupied with their civil war however the Tibetan government knew it was only a matter of time as both the Communists and the KMT claimed Tibet as part of China. Tibet attempted to reach out to both the United Nations and the Chinese government to gain it's legal status as a sovereign territory but the UN was focused on the European rebuilding effort and the establishment of Israel it couldn't focus on the Tibetan cause who in 1946 wasn't a UN member. Tibet then approached the government of China in 1946 but the Chinese civil war had outlasted WW2 was still ongoing so no response was received to grant Tibet it's full legal status. With the victory over the KMT in 1949 Mao and the communist forces moved west to "reclaim" Tibet and 1951 Tibet was returned to its second period of Chinese rule. Tibet has since tried to wither the erosion of Tibetan customs and traditions as best it can.

This is great. I'm super interested in the history of the Tibet, the Dalia Lama and the Potola Palace, and I've been begging for someone to cover it. Thank you so much for not cowtowing to the algorithm.
His title is the Dalai Lama and his winter palace was the Potala Palace. Don't worry compadre, Tibet has always existed, just like any other major culture like China or India. By that very nature, Tibet as a topic will continue to exist.
you forgot about the penchen lama, a pretty significant figure who identifies the next dalai lama and who is identified himself by the former dalai lama
Thank you for doing a video on this topic. This is extremely important stuff to even Western Vajrayana Buddhists. His Holiness, and his predecessors have been amazing, important historical figures even outside the tradition. The CCP's stance is, of course, dangerous and oppressive. All awareness on the topic, especially as thorough as this, is positive.
Great video but I can't help but be a little disappointed that Taiwan was just glossed over as if China's claim to it might actually be legitimate. At least it wasn't included in the map as a part of China.
@@eugeneng7064 I don't think there's any "legitimate" claim to be made at all. Taiwan has operated as an independent, sovereign nation since the Japanese gave up the island in 1945. The Qing Dynasty claims over the island (which is not to be confused with modern China) ended in 1895. If China has a claim to Taiwan than it absolutely does not have a claim to Tibet... simply put Taiwan is an independent nation and doesn't need to claim as such because it already is...
@@JohnnyStrides The Japanese gave up Taiwan, to which the KMT took in 1945, so they have been ruled from Nanjing for about four years after the war ended. The Taiwanese government also still recognises the One China Policy, therefore by their own admission affirms they are a part of China. So long as that stands, Taiwan to me is a part of China. As for Tibet, the Qing government that held it passed power to the Empire of China which was replaced by the Republic which was replaced by the People's Republic. Therefore continuity of government holds. If that wasn't enough they took it back, which cements it. If you haven't noticed, official standing of the concerned parties and actual control are what I care about. In which case, Taiwan's official stance is that they are a part of China and Tibet has been a part of China since the mid-Qing at the most conservative with a shirt interregnum after 1911.

The map that you are showing is only the Chinese so called "AUTONOMOUS REGION", and it's not the full picture of Tibet. Tibet is much larger than that, it includes Kham and Amdo too(place where the 14th Dalai Lama was born)
You're referring to Greater or Historical Tibet, which the Tibetan Government-in-Exile lays claim to. Author Patrick French in his book _Tibet, Tibet: A Personal History of a Lost Land_ wrote that he found it curious the TGIE would make such a claim given that even from 1913-1951, Tibet exercised no power over the region beyond historical U-Tsang (which is roughly today's Tibet Autonomous Region). Amdo and Kham had basically been under Chinese control since the Qing Dynasty, and even further back than that, Lhasa never really had much control over those regions for extended periods of time.

I have faith in Tibet as one of the most remarkably loyal civilizations humanity has created. Loyalty to the three jewels of refuge (AKA Buddhism), loyalty to its doctrine of compassion for all sentient beings, and loyalty for its Buddha-King His Holiness the Dalai Lama. They'll find a way. There's nothing but more blood, sweat, and tears for Tibet to re-attain its basic liberties or even acknowledgement of existence, but it will come no doubt.
@Alex Mercer Please elaborate, you're extremely vague with what you're claiming. When did Tibet become Chinese territory and how? Also, no one said they wanted to be a "poor slave of the Dalai Lama," that's only a strawman you created.
If Tibet is independent and ruled by Dalailama: your skin gets peeled, skull gets cut and Dalailama makes a drum with your skin and skulls. They use your bones to make flutes and hold a giant party using hundreds of drums and flutes just to memorize their 'God'.

This Dalai lama enslaved 98% of population in Tibet and he is an icon in the west. Guardian "Until 1959, when China cracked down on Tibetan rebels and the Dalai Lama fled to northern India, around 98% of the population was enslaved in serfdom. Drepung monastery, on the outskirts of Lhasa, was one of the world's largest landowners with 185 manors, 25,000 serfs, 300 pastures, and 16,000 herdsmen. High-ranking lamas and secular landowners imposed crippling taxes, forced boys into monastic slavery and pilfered most of the country's wealth - torturing disobedient serfs by gouging out their eyes or severing their hamstrings." www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2009/feb/10/tibet-china-feudalism
When the Panchen Lama died, the Chinese imprisoned the real new Panchen Lama, and had monks select one acceptable to the Chinese government to be trained by them. So that they will do the same for a new Dalai Lama is not surprising.
I felt like I was in a fantasy novel listening to this...I had no idea the Chinese government approached theology this way but it makes sense when you realize it's not so different from the Western politico religious pursuits of my ancestors.
The Dalai Lama is sort of like the Doctor, having several incarnations. Anyway, I think that independently finding a new one without china's influence will be difficult, as China controls the entire area. There could possibly be 2 auccessors. A Chinese picked one that is loyal to china, and an internationally picked and recognised one probably based in India or Nepal.
Fo the record, sequence between 3:32 - 3:47 is not in China, it is in Ladakh, India. I understand that it serves as a visual imagery of Tibetan water sources, but I think it makes sense to point out the factual correctness too!
Ya know, I’m a man of science. Religions don’t really hold weight in my life. However the process of picking a new Dalai Lama, and the religion of Buddhism really do interest me. Edit: I do hope that in my life I can spend more than a few weeks in Tibet. I’ve always wanted to ask monks in Tibet, on some far off sanctuary, if I could sit quietly in the corner and observe. No notes, no recordings, but just be there. Utterly fascinating honestly.
Would you were a man of silence- then you would already have studied Buddhism and so not sat your tubby Buddha weight so Pestiferously upon the Hungary. Pinch a Loaf. Fish. Hang out on the Crossroads to observe. Oh, man of science, give us a scien.
Wha? I'm in china right now and I have to say you left out some important stuff. Especially the Panchan lama (spelled wrong I think). Around the age of 26 the dalilama choose a young boy as the Panchan lama because they are spiritually connected. Counterparts, so they can know where they are when brought back to life. China might still have the real Panchan alive somewhere. (My info might not be accurate, but this should be really important).

@Richard Higsalih the repetitive nature of this alignment would indicate god does exist and has been trying to fix this over loop
What a time to read this comment.
Do you have any book where i can read about that?
John Man’s biography of Kublai Khan states that the Yuan Dynasty created the position of Dalai Lama because of the infighting between regional Tibetan Lamas. They wanted one Lama to represent them all. The dates match up, and Dalai is the Mongol word for Ocean, used metaphorically as of the many. If that’s true, then there is a precedent for Chinese governments manipulating the appointment.
The struggle against Sinocization in Tibet goes back centuries.
Basically Tibet is the Poland of Asia, disappearing from the map in 1720, reappearing in 1912 and again disappearing in 1951
In 1720 the Imperial Qing government launched an expedition into Tibet under the pretext of defending it from a common enemy.

Great video but I can't help but be a little disappointed that Taiwan was just glossed over as if China's claim to it might actually be legitimate. At least it wasn't included in the map as a part of China.
Depends on how you view it. China's claim is legitimate based on continuity of government and the One China Policy. Otherwise no.

Drepung monastery, on the outskirts of Lhasa, was one of the world's largest landowners with 185 manors, 25,000 serfs, 300 pastures, and 16,000 herdsmen. The Dalai Lama is sort of like the Doctor, having several incarnations.
