Since you mentioned the Panchem Lama, you should have mentioned the _Karmapa_ which is the oldest of the lama lines (and head of the Kagyu school), older than the Dalai Lama. Perhaps make a separate video about the heads of the five Tibetan Buddhist sects. The Gelug school's head is the _Ganden Tripa_ and the Sakya school's head is the _Sakya Trizin._ The Nyingma school's head (title created in 1960s) is seemingly defunct and decentralized since 2020. The Jonang school's head (resurrected title in the late 1990s) is _Jebtsundamba Khutuktu_ which is also the national head of the Gelug school in Mongolia.
Quick correction: at 12:30, the Sakya Trizin is not a Tulku. That is a family lineage, passed down from father to son in the Sakya school. The man you showed was HH Ngawang Kunga, the retired Sakya Trizin Rinpoche. The current Sakya Trizin is actually HH Ratna Vajra Rinpoche, the eldest son of HH Ngawang Kunga.

my father is a phd in tibetology. i think he would recommend to learn the tibetan language as it will enrich your studies if you choose to pursue them. the tibetan culture has been under siege for many decades with books burnt and culture lost. learning the language and using that skill to translate and preserve texts is much needed
13 minutes in and you have managed to put the concepts of emptiness and compassion into the minds of modern English speaking people better than a lot of much grander efforts. The bicycle analogy was most excellent. Very very well done. This was a pleasure to watch and made me want to go back and re-read some old stuff. Thanks !
I don't think the translation to "emptiness" fits the concept very well. I believe that omnipresence or even the word he used "interdependence" provides for a more proper translation to the principle than "emptiness."

I practiced meditation and studied as a practitioner in the Mahayana, Vajrayana and Dzogchen traditions for decades, inspired by and often under the direct tutelage of some great teachers and lamas. I am grateful and have lots of respect for the tradition. But, probably like any naive and serious practitioner of many religions encountered an entrenched political establishments, with the prettiest of rivalries, wars and toxic secrets and psychopathies, along with profound teachings and practices. You left out a few important things. Start with WHY the Chinese attacked those very oppressive "monasteries."
Many years ago, as a World Religions major. We as a class were tasked with visiting five houses of worship for the five largest world religions. I visited them all to fulfill the requirements of the assignment and earn my grade. However, after visiting the grandiose houses of Catholicism and Islam. I had trouble finding a place to visit to experience Buddhism. To my surprise I found a small Darmha Center just 4 miles from my home. So, I went to visit it and met the Monks, who had been ones that escaped Tibet and fled to India. After that they came to the United States. I began studying with them every Sunday and we chanted and I listened to the eldest monk talk to us about the impermanence of all things. I began reading and found joy in the concepts of the Bards and how reincarnation manifests itself from the ether to the physical realm. (The Bard of the Becoming) It was at this point that I began to lose my worries and also my desires to attain more material possessions and gratifications. However, living in America, it didn't last long as I was a student in an expensive university, living on borrowed money and time. And I was surrounded and permeated by capitalism and excess. No matter how much I rebelled against it, no matter how much I resisted the minute by minute onslaught of advertisers, marketers, colleagues, friends, family and love interests. I ultimately gave in and succumbed to the pressures and went back to my previous existence. Only, now I was changed and couldn't approach my old life in the same manner as before...knowing and feeling what I had learned anew. The teachings always stuck with me and were always in my thoughts, from the mundane to the critical. Flash forward now some 18+ years. And in 2018 after many years of ignoring my lessons. I closed my company, sold every possession and gave many away, including a pretty fine small sailing yacht that I once loved dearly. I sold 3 very expensive cars, 2 motorcycles, an entire building full of tools and equipment. I donated three car-loads of clothing and household goods to Goodwill. At this point my only son was grown and gone and my wife and I had been divorced for 11 years. On the Eve of my 50th birthday, I threw on a backpack and bought a one-way ticket to Thailand. I spent the next 6 months traveling Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia. I was looking for...something...clarity perhaps. I ended up settling in Thailand and moved around infrequently for a few years. I met a wonderful Thai woman, who I became life partners with. We live a calm, serene and usually peaceful existence. I began studying Buddhism again and Thai language, and took up teaching at a small, rural school in Southern Thailand. I've been here for five years now and have no intention of ever returning to America. My next trip will be a pilgrimage to Bhutan and further north to Nepal. The study of ancient religions and their writings, (linguistic anthropology) are my life's foci now, along with the study of traditional indigenous water craft building techniques. (an indulgence) I recently tried to teach at a local university, but was sickened by what I experienced there to such a degree that I felt compelled to exit as quickly as possible. I have lost my taste for the pursuit of status and money and being involved in enlightenment for sale. So now, I only indulge in free classes and seminars, podcasts and videos like these. I do enjoy what the internet has to offer for free education and I see no need to pursue paying for paper with paper... to tell others what I have come to know and understand. Openculture.com has enough free classes listed in it's web pages to last any would-be scholar a life time of study for -0-$'s. This is the path that I chose...to find what it is that I'm looking for in this life time. I'm in no way seeing ultimate enlightenment on the horizon. But I know it's somewhere ahead. Had I not made the decision that I made way back when, I wouldn't be where I am now. And feeling correct about ones course-heading is contentment. Peace be with you all. Keep searching, learning and growing.
It's probably important for you to find a copy of "Buddhadhamma by Bhikkhu P.A.Payuto translated by Robin Philip Moore via Buddhadhamma Foundation in Bangkok😊
I hope you make it to Nepal and visit Pharping (Dakshin Kaile). There you will find a cave where Guru Rinpoche meditated. Spend a few hours and recall your teachings on impermanence. You have my blessings.
Just as the great Dalai Lama recommends gratitude, I want to thank you for the amazingly informative videos on both the philosophical and historical aspects of religion.

Great work! I'm a postdoctoral researcher in Tibetan studies (and am working on an animated Tibetan history series, myself) -- and I've got to say, this was a lot better than I expected. I only just found your channel and am very impressed. It's very important to have public facing resources like this. The current release schedule actually has The Animated History of Tibet coming out on the 27th of November 2023. Episodes 1-3 (covering the imperial period and the Tibetan renaissance) will drop every other week leading up to the holidays. And then we pick back up with the release schedule in the early Spring, airing 4-6 in March/April 2024 and episodes 7-9 in July/August of 2024. I very much appreciate the interest!
As a long-time Kagyu practitioner (and former monk) I was impressed with the clarity of this presentation. The only thing I would have added is the importance of the Karmapa and the controversial popularizer, Chogyam Trungpa. Trungpa spoke and wrote English better than any other Tibetan I met, and was able to translate the teachings into something very comprehensible to westerners. This was a great talk, and thanks for your efforts to present it to us.

To the point as always. But let me put that little detail straight : Sönam Gyatso (the 3rd in the incarnation line to come to be known as the Dalai Lamas) taught among Mongolian tribes. A religious teacher is called a "lama" in Tibetan, and as his name Gyatso means Ocean in Tibetan, the Mongolians just called him the "Ocean" Lama", or - in their language - the Dalai Lama. So, simply a translation (but, as always, Tibetans love to put meaning in names). By the way, all the 14 incarnations up to the present one (Tendzin Gyatso) bear Ozean (Gyatso) as part of their name.
Your videos are some of the best "general" religious content! I say general because they are like extensive introduction chapters. And I love it! Sometimes I'm content with your videos, "that was interesting, glad I learned about it", other times , "that was interesting, I need to learn more!"

Tibetan is an Indo-European language with some ties to northern Germanic. That's why the Nazis sent a couple of explorers there to make propaganda. Brad Pitt's movie Seven Years in Tibet tells a sanitized version of their story.
You say ø is like ö, yet I traveled southwestern China with a pair of Danes for 5 weeks, and not only did they specifically deny this, but I was told that in all my attempts, only once did I *almost pronounce Søren's name correctly. Whereas my German is quite good! :-D
Around 12:00, talking about interdependence on all other beings. This thought helped me through periods of depression and great loneliness because I found meaning through being with animals. The Christian viewpoint of being a human created in god's image and the only thing with a soul on that "level" is such a lonely viewpoint. Acknowledging that we are also interdependent on animals and other living beings helped me so much because I actually wasn't alone. I'm always a part of something bigger.

In Buddhist philosophy, it's thought that nothing in samsara is perfect. Everything is imperfect because all things rely on others, they will one day decay and vanish, and they are tied to the physical stressors of physics and emotions. But this video, explaining Tibetan Buddhism in such a gentle way, is the closest to perfection that you can get! I think the world is more in value when this RUclips channel exists. No one ever has ever explained Tibetan Buddhism so clearly in 25 minutes as this video. And it's free to watch! The world is such an amazing place!
How does that mean everything is imperfect? It doesn't follow, it just means things depend on one another, which is certainly not a profound idea, even Aristotle talked about it.

I love how the guided meditations help me connect with my inner self. Your calming voice and thoughtful guidance make it so much easier to find peace in my hectic life.
I just finished watching avatar the last Airbender and after watching this video I realise how much influence Tibetan Buddhism had on the show in the show we see that ang was chosen as the reincarnation of Avatar after he chose several relics from the past avatars also angs guardian monk was also named gyatso
Can you make a video about buddhism was in Srivijaya (now Indonesia)? I read many monks from india and other region came there to study which is somehow looks like buddhism capital at one moment. Even Athisha studied there for 11 years before going to Tibet.
What a detailed accurate explanation in such a short time. 👏 Being a Tibetan Buddhist, I thank you for taking so much time and effort to make this beautiful video. I subscribed and watched all the ads. Edit : One thing I must add here is that there's also the Kagyudpa sect, which plays a very important role in Tibetan Buddhism. The famous Milarepa is one of the greatest master of this sect. The very Tulku system came to exist from this sect with the first Karmapa Dusum Khenpa.

Its really plausible how much information you have included. And most importantly, you have really put effort to narrate the true facts instead of mistyfying Tibetan buddhism like many of the youtubers. You have explained emptiness and compassion in a brilliant way
Excellent video. I've been trying to learn more about Tibetan Buddhism online and this was the clear, sequential overview that I needed to make sense of things. Thank you
i'VE WATCHED A NUMBER OF YOUR VIDEOS AND AM IMPRESSED WITH HOW MUCH KNOWLEDGE OF EACH RELIGION YOU CARRY INSIDE AND YOU OPENNESS AND LACK OF JUDGEMENT.
Except that it isn't. It's called Vajryana, not Tibetan Buddhism, since it also exists in Mongolia, China, Japan and elsewhere. Would you call Catholicism Italian Christianity?
@@ZenAndPsychedelicHealingCenter Misapplication of categories. Yes, there is Vajrayana in Japan and China (and Mongolia and elsewhere) but if you actually watched the documentary, you would note that it is predominantly about that form of Vajrayana centered initially in Tibet. Which has in the past 70 years been exported directly from Tibet to the rest of the world. As such, it's a good introduction. And I could make a case for calling Catholicism Italian Christianity, although I don't and wouldn't. The varieties of Vajrayana was NOT what the documentary was about. I mean, Shingon in Japan has interesting overlaps with Tibetan Vajrayana, but they are also markedly different, with different root texts and even different practices. Chinese Vajrayana ranges from Tibetan-oriented to something wildly shamanistic that is more related to Mongolian shamanism than what we normally think of as "Vajrayana." I mean, c'mon. Why don't we just call ice cream steak? Both of them are foods!
@@ZenAndPsychedelicHealingCenter why are you making yourself look so silly by making a bunch of comments about something you clearly didn't bother watching or understanding? you're trying to be pedantic to sound smart but it's really only making you look foolish.
Where I come from there were a bunch of Tibetan Buddhist families, and one of the Lamas was apparently reborn a few miles away from me, because he chose a few items that the old one used in life. There are even monks in robes and a monastery with a huge statue inside. The interesting thing is that the monastery looks like a regular house, but when they open the windows you can see their art.
Tibetan buddhist monastery usually has distinct style but because of the cost and hassle to built the traditional style some monastery usually settle with regular house.
Just choosing items from previous life isn't enough. There are dream indications, special signs like in case of His Holiness , there where letters appeared in the lake. He also recognized an abbot of His previous life who disguised as a servant and real servant as a rich man. Like that, there are many other indications.
Getting more people to understand interdependence could go a long way towards creating less strife in the world. For a comedic reference to this idea, you can read "The Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul" by Douglas Adams. He's a holistic detective, who solves mysteries using the interconnectedness of all things. I love the book, it's ridiculously hilarious and interesting. They did a season or so on TV, called "Dirk Gently." The TV show is very different, but that's fine, it was decently funny as well.
The information provided in this 23 minute video explains a lot about tibetan buddhism. I recently visited Ladakh, India which is an extended tibetan land falling under Indian control and your information matched exactly with what I experienced there. Also i got to learn many more things from your video. Thank you.

When I was a part of TB it took me a long time to wrap my head around how it all makes sense within the different types of Buddhism. It's actually even simpler than this I think. Within the context of the three vehicles it is: The hinayana is about becoming an Arahant (enlightened) The mahayana is about becoming a "Buddha to Be" (which takes countless lifetimes) The vajrayana is about becoming a "Buddha to Be" in this lifetime. What's the difference? The differece between the Arahant and the Buddha is not their enlightenment, but the difference in their skill. The Buddha has purified himself and developed skills, or qualities over lifetimes, where as someone who becomes an Arahant can still be rough around the edges.
This was excellent. I was wondering how this would compare from my personal experience living among Tibetan Refugees in India, down the road from the Dalai Lama's personal monastery there. This video was spot on with what I was taught by the monks there.
@@aceclashIf you saying in Indian context then Buddhism aa a whole didn't survive in India and India today have approximately only 1% buddhist population. But thanks to Tibetan choosing India as refuge. They have built so many study centre and monastries which has once again made India the hot spot of Tibetan buddhism and Communist failed in its mischief of wiping of Out Tibetan Buddhism.
I'm loving this channel so much! Thank you a lot for all the heart you pour into researching and introducing the complex and intricate philosophies of all the world religions to your audience here on RUclips. This is not an easy task at all, it demands a lot of time and work, and it's much appreciated! As a request/suggestion, could you please consider covering jainism on a future video, juxtaposing it to buddhism on grounds of metaphysics and soteriology? I personally find myself drawn to some of its teachings even though buddhism seems to be the one that ultimately clicks/resonates the best with me, but learning and expanding one's mind is never a bad thing!! Best regards.
One incredibly important figure for all of Tibetan Buddhism was Atiśa who started the Kadampa or Kadam school, and was the head abbot for a time at Vikramashila. The Kadampa was sort of the proto-gelug school. It is said that Atiśa, not Padmasambhava, codified, or maybe made the path more clear and settled philosophical disputes about Buddhism in Tibet. Particularly with Lojong or mind training, and the Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment- which is considered a highly important work that "settled" buddhism in tibet for centuries. I've read before as well that Tibetan Buddhist culture kept the traditions and art alive from the Pala empire where the three great monasteries were: Nalanda, Vikramashila, and Odantapuri. One of the major and secret tantras, the Six Yogas of Naropa, were pieced together by Naropa from his studies with Tilopa. Tilopa made sesame oil and is an amazing teacher who looms large in the Mahamudra tradition. Naropa was the head of Nalanda monastery. I believe every Tibetan order practices with the Six Yogas of Naropa, though they're usually only taught during the 3-year retreats to aspiring lamas and monks. There's other similar Six Dharmas of Niguma, supposedly Naropa's sister, and Six Dharmas of Sukhasiddhi who is thought to be either contemporary or taught by Niguma. One addition to Sunyata is that it's not just interdependence, but also impermanence. Sunyata can be thought of as interdependence and impermanence happening simultaneously so everything is empty of inherent existence. Nothing is static. Everything is sort of being built or breaking apart at all times. Or at least that's how I've understood it to be, and my lama or any of the elders of my sangha have corrected or disagreed. "form is emptiness and emptiness is form" as Avalokiteśvara says. om mani padme hum!
wow in detail properly explain, very good research, i read all comment feel proud to be Tibetan Buddhism refuge . thank u sir bringing awareness about our religion . btw its not religion its practice way of life . free from suffering
Fantastic video. I'm saving this ine because it is such a brilliant overview of Tibetan Buddhism. I am a big fan of Padmasambhava and Buddhism and have just started learning more about the Tibetan Buddhists. Thank you so much.
I love your channel/videos Thank you for doing this one on Tibetan Buddhism Please consider doing one on Japanese Buddhism (Shingon, Tendai, Zen) Maybe also videos on Shugendo and Onmyodo as well
Tibetan Buddhism plus Tibetan culture has been a very much interest that I loved to make knowledge about, this here has been one glad to have visited, thanks so very much, Peace!
Hey! I would love it if you made some videos about more ancient central asian religions like Tengrism. I am turkish and I've done some research about my ancestors religion, and I must say, it's quite intriguing to say the least. I would love if you were to cover it :)
I am a Tibetan Buddhist and the depth of your knowledge is incredible. When you explain the shrine being build in day is destroyed at night I knew that your knowledge about Tibetan Buddhism is much more better than many Tibetan people. Thank you so refreshing my memory.
I think I finally put my finger on what is so puzzling to me about Buddhism in general : it's not, like all the (pre-christian) European religions I know of (I'm European) or the book religions, about paying respect to deities. It seems to be more about a world view and a dedication of self to enlightening practices. Of course there are also deities/spirits in the background, but somehow it is more about Human itself rather than supernatural beings. It's super interesting.
Buddhism do believe that gods and deities exist but unlike all other religions that believe a god or deity can bless them, Buddhism don't believe that. I think that's the main difference between Buddhism and others in regards to gods and deities.
I don't think a ton is known about pre-christian European religions tbh. I have researched a few pre-christian faiths, both extant and extinct, and while a big portion is honoring deities there's also still usually a philosophy behind it. I'm guessing the philosophy comes later with more advanced religions. But so much was lost in Europe I don't think it's fair to judge it by what info remains.
Corrections: It was Princess Bhrikuti of Licchavi Nepal who was the first wife of the Emperor Songsten Gampo. She was monumental in the expansion of Buddhism in Tibet as she brought with her from Nepal (birthplace of the Buddha) as part of her dowry, Buddhist statues, artifacts, sacred scriptures, and most importantly expert Newari craftsmen who helped build hundreds of monasteries and stupas under her command. The current Potala palace built by the 5th Dalai Lama is an extension of the Red Palace that was built under Bhrikuti’s command as is the Jokhang temple aka House of Lord
Nice that Dudjom Rinpoche was mentioned! He was the Lama of my Lama. Speaking of tantra, while some stuff is very elaborate, it does not need to be. There are high tantric practices which do not require much ritual at all.
Tantra is still hugely practiced in India. It has evolved. There's an Indian movie that shows tantra in great spotlight. Name of that movie is Kantara. In Hinduism tantra is mostly associated with lord Shiva. There are peoples called aghori. They practice tantra. That's just tip of iceberg
Amazing and a little bit saddening at the same time that westerners are able to better explain and properly understand our culture than ourselves. Thank you for your informative video🙏🙏🙏
mandalas are more like a (highly abstracted and symbolized) snapshot of a state, which consists of the sum of a practitioner's inner and outer world/life/conduct at the same time
It's unfortunate you did not cover the other schools in more detail, such as Kagyu and Sakya, and their emphasis on certain practice and scholasticism. All four schools are incredibly prevalent on the global stage. It was also worth mentioning the Rime movement, with reforms to end Gelug dominance and to encourage interschool interaction and discourse. Many monastics receive training in different backgrounds, you might have a Nyingma teacher, do Kagyu rituals, and then follow a Terma lineage. Also, the Sakya Trizin is not a Tulku, but part of the Khön family which has been hereditary leaders of the Sakya school. Merit making is also prevalent in all forms of Buddhism, not all lay people are expected to have the capacity for study and theological practice, so more mundane practice is helpful for both personal purposes and for supporting the monastic institutions. Still, a fine very basic introductory video.
I honestly feel there is more intersect interaction than ever before. My family is traditionally Gelugpa but I didn’t know that until recently since my parents would take me to all kind of monasteries and masters from different schools 😅
@@Bzdm0 Thank you for sharing. It's quite apparent in Tibetan and Himalayan diaspora communities. In the past one might affiliate with the monastery that's close to home, or if a son or brother ordained at a specific school of a specific lineage. But in the diaspora, where retaining culture and religion is key to identity and survival, you'll see families visit Tibetan temples as a center of community and heritage. It's a reminder of home, even if the specific religious functions are not necessarily what you're accustomed to. For example, some of the Karma Kagyu and Shangpa Kagyu monasteries in upstate New York host Bhutanese families and visitors, even though Bhutan is traditionally a Drikung Kagyu nation, and there are certain language and culture differences.
Tibetan Buddhism (Vajrayana/Tantrayana) Buddhism is Buddhism's "highest" vehicle in the 3 Vehicle thought. All of the esoteric practices of Tantric Buddhism require empowerment.
I'm not a Buddhist but a lot of this sounds like me, especially the stuff about compassion, where you enrich your own life by enriching everyone around you, and the idea that you should do good works even if you don't see the results. I don't know if my own philosophy just happens to coincide with mahayana, or if I was influenced when learning about Buddism long ago. I know I learned about Buddhism when I was in school but I don't remember what exactly I learned.
My Tibetan Buddhist teacher once said, "some people call themselves Buddhist, but are not Buddhist. Other people may have never even heard the word 'Buddhist', but are Buddhist."
I've always aligned to some degree with the idea that everything is interconnected and that being good will bring good upon yourself, but that's not why you should be good. I think if you have empathy it just makes sense on a very basic level.
When I was in the military and I was stationed over in Japan that was my second exposure to Eastern religions. My first exposure, even though my neighborhood with mostly black we did have a large number of Southeast Asian immigrants aka the boat people that moved into our neighborhood in the 1980s.
I practiced with the Sharmapa for almost 10 years. He taught the Gnundro form of Tantra. Tibet was run as a Theocracy, and the life of the ordinary peasants was harsh. The criminal system could be pretty cruel. For instance, it was not unusual for the monks to bind a man in a public square and allow him to slowly freeze to death. The Sharmapa was an excellent teacher; however, the religion, just like any other, is plagued with scandals, so if you are considering learning meditation, please be very careful; there are many cults that mascarade as Buddhist centers.
Exactly speaking about Bön (ancient believes which roots are from Zhiang Zhiung kingdom, pre Tibetan times) an Yungdrung Bön, next generations existing until now. 😊 This smiling, charming person shown close to Dalajlama on the foto, is still living great master of Yungdrung Bön, now resident of Triten Norbutse Monastery in Kathmandu. The last master of masters who escaped from Tibet during Chinese occupation. Lopon Tenzin Namdag Rinpoche is worth for separate movie.

"In fact, some scholars wonder if Bön was actually just another form of Buddhism mixed with local indigenous traditions." This sounds similar to early Shintōism. It is known that Japan had its own religious practices before the coming of Buddhism, but since the earliest written records there were written in Chinese and after the coming of Buddhism, it is difficult to tell what beliefs were indigenous and what were the product of Buddhist syncretism.
It isn't that difficult anymore. The Japanese scholars who study this just don't like writing about it in international publications. In recent years, the consensus has been that the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki actually preserve an accurate representation of Japanese pre-Buddhist, pre-Shinto practices in their description of the Kunitsukami. That is, these were regional deities represented by totem animals that rule over the land specifically. It bears very close resemblance to the Ainu concept of kamuy. You can actually find a good description of how the pre-Shinto belief systems worked in some Japanese manga because this consensus is actually taught in Japan and the mangaka just don't realize that what they consider common knowledge hasn't been communicated to the world at large. Check out the mangas Touge Oni (Primal Gods in Ancient Times) and Munakata Kyouju Denkikou (The Folklore Studies of Professor Munakata). The former offers a sanitized and sci-fi laden description of how human-deity relationship worked in pre-Shinto Japan, including how the Japanese viewed human sacrifice. The latter includes in many of its chapters the violent real world history of how Shinto replaced the traditional belief systems through political domination of the Yamato Court over the indigenous populations of Japan. This is the part that Japanese scholars know but have largely avoided publicizing to the world at large.
Bon came into being after Buddhism entered Tibet. It is simply the conversion of Tibetan gods and practices to Buddhism. The tibetan gods became Buddhists. So called Shintoism is the same. It is similiar to the abrahamic religions. When they convert a people to their religions, the local religions don't go away. They simply become part of the abrahamic religions. Greek philosophy was appropriated by the abrahamic religions. They had an immense influence on Christianity and Judaism.
I was looking for this info after watching a video on Tibetan Buddhism. You did not just scratch the surface, any more would have been superfluous for me. I though there were fewer supernatural beliefs in Buddhism that differentiated it from other major religions, now I know a lot more about this religion. Thanks for the info.
I'm an atheist but I can't help but be drawn to many of the buddist teachings. The Christianity I was raised in always seemed to be at odds with science, modern ethics, and skepticism. Buddism on the other hand seems far more grounded in reality, even if its not all true. It seems accepting and charismatic in a way I don't see western religion. Of course it has its issues and one cannot ignore its history, but I still greatly enjoy learning about it and its followers.
Buddhism is very interesting, and seems to overlap in it's ideas with some western concepts (interdependence sounds a lot like systems theory for example). I've definitely found myself accidentally taking inspiration from some of its ideas just because they make a lot of sense from a more collectivist view of the world (though it's useful from an individualistic one as well). I think even without the supernatural, it's a pretty useful framework for a lot of analysis and introspection.
The Dalai Lama has been quoted to have said that "if some precept is at odds with the findings of science, then that precept must be wrong". On the other hand, Buddhism is also divided into innumerable schools and in some states it functions as state religion with all the inherent intolerance.
Because Abrahamic religion is flawed in it's core, it is salvation through affiliation and the concession of spiritual liberty for a divine tyranny. it's this clashing conundrum that inflate the hubris of their denial for perpetual conflict binding others for their own sanctimonious rhetoric. The Eastern have found a path that does not akin itself into this, rather it elevates the humanity in cooperating with divinity as a vehicle for his being, this is what differs from East and West is. the difference of revering a tyrant deity or the Wayward serenity.

Since you mentioned the Panchem Lama, you should have mentioned the _Karmapa_ which is the oldest of the lama lines (and head of the Kagyu school), older than the Dalai Lama.
Perhaps make a separate video about the heads of the five Tibetan Buddhist sects. The Gelug school's head is the _Ganden Tripa_ and the Sakya school's head is the _Sakya Trizin._
The Nyingma school's head (title created in 1960s) is seemingly defunct and decentralized since 2020.

I don't think the translation to "emptiness" fits the concept very well. I believe that omnipresence or even the word he used "interdependence" provides for a more proper translation to the principle than "emptiness."

What uni? Out of curiosity
@@Nyingmaba University of Hong Kong. What about you?
@@patrickirwin3662 Sorry. You lost me.
(an indulgence)
I recently tried to teach at a local university, but was sickened by what I experienced there to such a degree that I felt compelled to exit as quickly as possible.

Did you know the Dalai Lama also says 'Europe is for Europeans' and that refugees don't belong in Europe?
Let it be known to all:
Through the Holy Spirit, God has put it on me to preach to those lost in the devil's deceit!
I tell ye, truly, Jesus of Nazareth is the propitiation for the whole world's sins. He is the anointed one, for he is, Jesus Christ. God the Father has raised him from the dead; who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God! Angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.
Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life: no one comes to the Father, but by him. They who believe and are baptized with the Holy Spirit shall be saved; but they who believe not shall be damned. For they who believe not on him, shall die in their sins!
I tell ye now to repent of your sins, accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, and you'll receive the gift of the Holy Spirit upon asking the Father!
There are *NO* sub-divisions of Christianity. You're either a disciple of Christ or not. A Christian is someone who follows God's word, not a religion. Who obey the Father and follow his will; not man's nor their own heart's. Unless you keep Jesus' commandments, think not the Holy Spirit will dwell within you!
They who heed this message and did what was stated with an open heart to God...

It must also be remembered that "Tenzin Gyatso" is also what one might call the Dalai Lama's 'Regnal Name'. His birth name was "Lhamo Thondrup".

In Buddhist philosophy, it's thought that nothing in samsara is perfect. Everything is imperfect because all things rely on others, they will one day decay and vanish, and they are tied to the physical stressors of physics and emotions.

Also i got to learn many more things from your video. Thank you.
Different schools of Buddhism brings us to different levels of spiritual attainment. The one that brings us to the highest level is Falun Dafa(The Great Way).........truthfulness-compassion-tolerance.
tough video to release april 2023
When I was a part of TB it took me a long time to wrap my head around how it all makes sense within the different types of Buddhism. It's actually even simpler than this I think. Within the context of the three vehicles it is:
The hinayana is about becoming an Arahant (enlightened)
The mahayana is about becoming a "Buddha to Be" (which takes countless lifetimes)
The vajrayana is about becoming a "Buddha to Be" in this lifetime.
What's the difference?
The differece between the Arahant and the Buddha is not their enlightenment, but the difference in their skill. The Buddha has purified himself and developed skills, or qualities over lifetimes, where as someone who becomes an Arahant can still be rough around the edges.
PLEASE do more on the different lineages of Tibetan Buddhism
This was excellent. I was wondering how this would compare from my personal experience living among Tibetan Refugees in India, down the road from the Dalai Lama's personal monastery there. This video was spot on with what I was taught by the monks there.
Tibetan (Tantric)Buddhism did not survived in India.
Also some beautiful scenery from Leh Ladakh India ❤
Thank you so much for video and Free my country Tibet 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Thank you very much for all the explanations. Love & respect from all the Tibetan communities. Long love His holliness the 14th Dalai Lama. 💕💐🙏

So... do you have some repressed memories from your childhood about dalai lamas trying to make you suck on their tongue?
Fantastic video. I'm saving this ine because it is such a brilliant overview of Tibetan Buddhism. I am a big fan of Padmasambhava and Buddhism and have just started learning more about the Tibetan Buddhists. Thank you so much.
I love your channel/videos
Thank you for doing this one on Tibetan Buddhism
Please consider doing one on Japanese Buddhism (Shingon, Tendai, Zen)
Maybe also videos on Shugendo and Onmyodo as well
Tibetan Buddhism plus Tibetan culture has been a very much interest that I loved to make knowledge about, this here has been one glad to have visited, thanks so very much, Peace!
What? Its a cult based around a (supposedly) omniscient vedic indian. Just replace a deity with gautama and you have the same bs.
Dalai lama is my head teachers teacher i pratice dharma and tantra and sutra and tibet tantra for many years he is my guider head guider
Well done on such a complex topic 👏 This is a fine intro to whet one's appetite.
Great video, so much info packed into such a short amount of time and easy to follow. Thank you for this.
Yes and reason for the is ur tibetan is poor 😊
Thank YOUR GOD htat you finally covereed ths topic! More peoplpe should know about this topic.
mandalas are more like a (highly abstracted and symbolized) snapshot of a state, which consists of the sum of a practitioner's inner and outer world/life/conduct at the same time
An EXCELLENT video, very informative, enlightening for everyone. Om Mani Padme Hum
@@hui-an-xin Good point
You seem like you have good knowledge and experience Tibetan culture and religion. You are 100%correct.
Thank you for mentioning this. This video is in fact poorly researched and not very accurate in some respects.
Excellent video. Very interesting, informative and worthwhile video.
Avatar Aang's master Gyatso and son Tenzin are named after the 14th Dalai Lama
A very clear and concise bird’s eye view of Tibetan Buddhism! Thank you for a great video!
Well, today I learned the way the Avatar is chosen in The Last Airbender is identical to the Tulku System from Tibetan Buddhism, that's neat.
Quite a good condensed overview. Well done.
Tibetan Buddhism (Vajrayana/Tantrayana) Buddhism is Buddhism's "highest" vehicle in the 3 Vehicle thought. All of the esoteric practices of Tantric Buddhism require empowerment.
Well research and well explained. as I am a Tibetan and Buddhist to say thanks for your knowledge and handwork to share for the others 🙏🙏🙏
Well, we can have compassion without buddhism and indeed many humans have been compassionate long before buddhism even existed.
@@TheGuiltsOfUsman is everywhere to spread hate on Buddhism😂
Such a delightful surprise seeing the picture of the Sakya temple
I often ride by it a number of times a week as a reminder of the Dharma

You should do a video about Bön and well. I feel like most people have never even heard of it
Exactly speaking about Bön (ancient believes which roots are from Zhiang Zhiung kingdom, pre Tibetan times) an Yungdrung Bön, next generations existing until now.
Your pronunciations are so beautiful, I wish to be able one day to speak their names so fluidly like that!
Tibetan Buddhism is also very popular elsewhere in China too.
In nepal 95 % buddhist follows tibetan buddhist .and raising in india and veitnams like fire.

Great and interesting video. Do you have or are you going to do a video on Thai Buddhism?
i like how your videos are made in such a good quality video making style and they are so professionaly done, wow
"In fact, some scholars wonder if Bön was actually just another form of Buddhism mixed with local indigenous traditions."
This sounds similar to early Shintōism.
Thanks for the info.
he did not know what the true perspectives on mandalas, deity meditation and emptiness etc.are but gave a good general introduction to the subject.
This was fascinating, I would love to hear more about the philosophical concepts of Buddhism.
Then Theravada should interests You
What a superb overview. Congratulations.
@@idraote What states are these?
Because Abrahamic religion is flawed in it's core, it is salvation through affiliation and the concession of spiritual liberty for a divine tyranny. it's this clashing conundrum that inflate the hubris of their denial for perpetual conflict binding others for their own sanctimonious rhetoric.
The Eastern have found a path that does not akin itself into this, rather it elevates the humanity in cooperating with divinity as a vehicle for his being, this is what differs from East and West is. the difference of revering a tyrant deity or the Wayward serenity.
