    If the music video clip at the beginning felt a little off, that's because it had to be dramatically altered for fear of getting demonetized by RUclips. In addition to the bonus video, the Nebula version of this video has my original uncut vision of that intro. I never want to be forced to censor my content and don't want you to feel like you're getting a "lesser" version of the video on RUclips, but the truth is that RUclips has forced me. I hope you understand and if you have Nebula, I hope you'll watch the full version there. Thanks and hope you enjoy this end to the series! -Evan

    Let's understand something in context: this generation of Chinese leaders experienced their youth during one of the most chaotic events in modern Chinese history - the Cultural Revolution. As many of us who've grown up know, youth is the time to be learning about how to properly engage with respective audiences (e.g. understanding that talking to our friends is not the same as talking to our bosses). Well, this generation didn't have those lessons drilled into them during those years. Instead, what did they learn at that time? To take pride in their country, Chairman Mao, etc., and to call out or make an example of anyone who says or does anything that can be perceived as going against that grain. Now that they've ascended to positions of power, we're seeing those unlearned lessons play out in much more impactful ways.

So when you ask more they will say "oh, you will never understand these and that" "oh, Chinese culture is very deep beyond other civilization's understanding" in this case "it cannot be translated", sometimes it is true but most of the time it is what it is. this abandonment of soft power abroad is idiotic. This is actually the perfect time for China to adopt a friendly attitude when US reputation abroad is in tatters. That way China could hold sway to its neighboring countries like the South East and East Asian countries and create a strong bloc to remove US dominance on the Asian continent.
    and by being the dominant and benevolent power (at least regionally), it is inevitably raise its status both domestically and internationally.

    • @michaelwang6125

      You are correct on it but I think Beijing missed the timing due to internal issues. When Beijing Biden took over WH; it truly was the best time to make peace instead of doubling down on expansionist policy while breaking yet more trade agreements with the US~etc. It fact it has gotten even worse... since they saw some opportunity to overcome even the US at that time... with US's uncoordinated withdrawal from Afganastan, Burma's successful military coup (Beijing was supporting supply/coordination and now even giving them submarines...) and democracy countries can't really do much about countries that outright rigged their election by detaining challengers (e.g Belarus, Venezuela Nicaragua etc... sanction can't be the only solution)
      Needless to say; I felt Washington was only trying to make Xi step down to restore the past relationship w/o fixing many of the rooted problems which didn't work out. The people at large probably won't be satisfied with that.
      I am somewhat concerned if Russia will end up annexing part of China "Again" like the past during the Chinese Civil War, World War etc...
      Japan abandoned its military was able to recover well despite being the only country that was nuked during WW. Their pacifism stance is/was the oldest policy that remain unchanged since the WW and Japan greatly benefited from it.
      1) Other nation's citizens don't see Japan as a threat anymore (excluding mainland communist-china and Korea)... Japan's greatest soft power was their gaming & animation LOL.
      Ps. benevolent + Beijing don't mix well.
      US's reputation had fallen but so had the credibility of China due to Beijing's actions and numerous broken promises. Both sides will have difficulty restoring them so I am actually more interested to see how the other 3-9th global power will react.
      USA was the undisputed global dominant power which was able to dominate its benevolence towards China... for it was the only country that redirects all war-reparation fees to free education for the Chinese in USA after War and despite its dominance... didn't try to do land grab like the former European power, USSR/Russia/etc.
      That clearly isn't something China is capable of when it has already unofficially annexed so many lands from other neighboring countries and even provided weapons to Burma's military who started a coup killing thousands of civilians. Beijing is no longer the welcoming China it once was under Den's leadership =/ May he rest in peace and not see the present-day China.

      @@MA_KA_PA_TIE There really isn't a good generalization. I think there are a few camps in the US.
      1. Many expats feel more strongly associated with their country after leaving China, since their "Chinese-ness" becomes a more defining trait when they are outside China. Thus, they tend to rally around national symbols in order to support their own sense of self worth. Whether this extends to supporting Xi varies from person to person. Some support him begrudgingly since he just happens to be the leader and they don't really question it too much. Others genuinely like him due to his hardline stance. It's like in this video, his defiance of western nations comes across as showing how strong China is, and I guess that translates to a sense of self worth as well.
      2. A few, particularly in businesses that have been negatively affected by Xi (I happen to know a few in the Software industry like this), really dislike him due to the reputation damage they have caused to China, and how it makes their own lives harder. But I find they generally avoid doing any action or talking too much about it in order to avoid conflict with other Chinese people. I've only had conversations about this with some of my closest friends. Thus, they try to cope and worry about everyday things instead.

    I think out of all the speculation, we gotta go with Occam’s Razor. China has become so inflammatory in its rhetoric because simply, it’s leader changed and so did their policies. Deng Xiaoping was actively trying to open the country up and of course, had to show that China was now approachable. Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao pursued a policy of non-confrontation and thus, had appeased the West. Xi is a nationalist, thus China has become nationalist with him, enough said.
    A major issue with looking at China is how many people view the Communist Party Administration as a contiguous entity, when its changes through the last couple of decades might as well make it seperate governments.

They overthrew the Hawaiian kingdom, bay of pigs incident, and so on.. From the 19th century to the 21st century America did the same.. Now that China is doing it, some dogs are barking..

      Japan's issues with China have little to do with anything that's changed about China. They've always hated each other, since Japan literally invaded the country earlier. Japan also hates S. Korea, and vice versa, so does that mean the West is gonna turn on S. Korea next?

      @@ArawnOfAnnwn There is more to it than that. Japan invaded many regions in Asia. Philippines and Vietnam also endure much sufferings. Vietnam had about 2 millions dead from starvation as a result of Japan's occupation. Vietnam is a close friend of Japan and it also works closely with its former enemy, the US, to build constructive relations. Other Asian countries look more to the present and future and not delve into the past. The enemy today can be a friend tomorrow and vice versa. When one keeps condemning another (especially not directly responsible) of the past, things usual don't end well and without constructive results. That's human nature. Japan today is not the Japan of the past. Similarly with Germany. With China, it's more about the relentless anti-Japan propaganda, dispute in the East Sea, and the broad range of human rights violations. For S. Korea, it's more to do with the opening of old wounds and grievances and the boycotting of Japan.

      When is the last time China shot at another country? Stop playing devil's advocate and tell me.
      Oh, you can't, and somehow there are some in the West thinking arming a country with a criminal background with nuclear weapon was a GREAT idea, ffs. Why don't we worry about those who actual have a criminal background first, before we talk about who's gonna shoot next?
      "
      Cut the crap from the past," well gotta say: go study some history first. Couple days ago, the media still reporting a riot happened back in some 30 years ago, yet the media in the West celebrate it like it's their mother's birthday, shouldn't we move forward? Pot calling kettle black!

    Does China not realize how much of its wealth comes from exports? By being rude, it's just discouraging other countries from trading and from immigrating to fix its demographics problem.
    Compare that with Canada, a country generally great at making friends. Our birth rate has been under 2.1 since 1972, but our rate of population growth never changed, since we're highly desirable to immigrants. In fact, China's losing a fair number of well-educated young people when they send students to Canada, and they stay here after graduation.

    There are many factors in the transformation, let me just point out a few.
    1. Xi's consolidation of power made dissent more and more difficult in China. During Jiang and Hu'r reign, one could mock the government to a degree and not be punished. And this became very different in Xi's era. So in a way, the "entire Chinese internet supports the Wolf Warriors" isn't entirely accurate, there are many, including myself, quit using Weibo or Zhihu because our posts got deleted over and over again.
    2. China became no longer just "the world's factory". Many Chinese companies, especially in tech, started to innovate so successfully that they can not only compete with existing giants, but sometimes even come out victorious. This shift drastically changed how the EU and the US view China.
    3. Xi massively misjudged China's strength, and selected a wrong path for China's future. And due to the aforementioned crackdown on dissent, diplomats and bureaucrats were acting to compete for Xi's favor. They needed to act tough to win Xi's trust. It is an act, but just not for the people. And when you see people supporting them, it's not the goal, it's the bonus.
    4. The Chinese media and the Ministry of Foreign Relations have a terrible understanding of how foreign media works, and they don't understand the way foreign public think. Their attempts to create a better image of China failed over and over again because they simply translated Chinese articles to foreign languages. And their articles only worked in China because there's no "other" media for people to consume in China.
    5. I'd conclude this by saying please don't be racist to Chinese people, and other Asians as well. You're only seeing what you want to see, from sources who pick what they want to show you. The Chinese people in China are still very wholesome with thier shortcomings. We have a long way to go to catch up, but we are working on it. I hope you can all come and see for yourself after the pandemic ends. Come visit a 6th tier city before you visit Beijing or Shanghai, you'll be amazed to see that even a 6th tier city has modern skyscraper and multiple subway lines-- and their population is in the millions.

    Basically, CCP is basically doing what Singapore had done in the past 60 years ago: Focusing on economic and military development while downplaying the role of softpower. That's why China's soft power is seriously lacking.
    From CCP standpoint, there are 3 main reasons why China is lagging behind when it comes to softpower:
    1. Much of the traditional Chinese culture were decimated since 1949. Reviving traditional Chinese culture takes loads of time and effort.
    2. Due to the on going border disputes against Russia, India and the rest of South East Asia, CCP is indoctrinating its citizens for future potential war. Investing in entertainment and video game industry will hamper CCP efforts to ensure it's citizens to unite as one to fight future potential wars.
    3. After the Korean War, CCP strongly believes respect is earn through power. So, their main focus is strengthening its technology, military, science and economics. So, reviving traditional Chinese culture and developing entertainment industry is not the main priority.

      I know what I have to say doesn’t help change the current situation in China. But this is why multiple political parties are needed in a democracy. Yes you lose harmony and the ability to take quick decisive action and policy changes due to the need for various debates and bureaucratic processes. But if the one party in charge makes a mistake, there is nobody else to take over and change course. It seems like the country is headed for ever more extreme actions and decisions that only become more unsustainable. Until it either falls apart or breaks out into (civil)war. Best case scenario the CCP has an internal power struggle where cooler heads come out on top and work on mending foreign relations and focusing on internal affairs fixing the problems mentioned in this series. But that’s wishful thinking. To the Chinese people I wish you the best of luck. Because I fear for what your future might look like.

    I think the analysis of this series of videos is to the point, at least at some level. As a Chinese, I do think we have problems to solve. The government is basically doing what other government would do if in the same situation. What I hope is, well, no matter how you feel about the country, don't hate the Chinese, for our race or for our defending of our country. China is more than just another country to the Chinese people. It is our home and mother land, regardless which government it has, which could have forbidden us to make the right decision. But a lot of China-haters' irrational blame, hurting oversea Chinese, etc. are making us harder and harder to take those critics seriously. In certain way, it is proving that what the Chinese government says about "the west" are true. I am always worrying that our people and government are not looking at the picture objectively and blinded by the China-hatreds. I don't want to point fingers, but Trump administration is constantly proving that our government's judgement about the west is right. I encourage people, Chinese or not, to think objectively. And if you don't know, don't say it. Try to look at the story and scene from both sides. Don't be the weapon of your (or other) governments. More importantly, stop being racists.

On the other hand, afraiding of the 'critics' from the west might be the reason our government is not doing it.

    • @LauravanderKnaap
      @LauravanderKnaap 3 года назад +6

      @@jayce8978 I don't think one should shy away from discussing horrific topics such as a genocide and human rights violations, just because these are sensitive topics.
      Of course the Uyghur genocide is not the only serious issue in the world, but this doesn't mean that the actions of the CCP can't be criticised. Whataboutism is often used to silence observations of Chinese problems.
      There does not need to be an ulterior motive for non-Muslim countries to care about a genocide of a predominantly Muslim group. People are people and it is only normal that there is outrage when people are unjustly persecuted and killed. Also, many western countries have various religions or are predominantly atheist.
      This is not about religion and it never has been. If anything, it's about ethnicity, but more likely is the importance of Xi Jinping's Belt and Road Initiative. The BRI relies heavily on law and order in Xinjiang, but decades of suppression of Uyghurs has resulted in unrest.
      The decline of the Uyghur reproduction rates should not be measured against that of Han Chinese, as you already said, those two are incomparable. Instead we have to compare recent numbers to those of before the intensified persecution:
      "Aspi’s report found the birthrate across Xinjiang fell by 48.74% between 2017 and 2019. In counties where the population was at least 90% non-Han Chinese, the birthrate dropped by an average 56.5% between 2017 and 2018. By examining county-level statistics, the report provided further evidence of “the systematic targeting” of communities, it said.
      “Previous research by both Chinese and foreign experts has examined the tightening of birth control policy in Xinjiang and a corresponding drop in natural population growth beginning in 2015, but even more dramatically after 2017,” it said." www.theguardian.com/world/2021/may/12/chinese-uyghur-policy-causes-unprecedented-fall-in-xinjiang-birthrates
      Finally, the US is not the only other country in the world and many countries condemn the actions of the CCP in Xinjiang. For example, in March the EU imposed sanctions on people and entities directly involved in the massa-surveillance implementation and the concentration camps. Criticism of the genocide transcends the US-China trade war and political interests.

    • @LauravanderKnaap
      @LauravanderKnaap 3 года назад +6

      @@jayce8978 I did not bring this subject up out of nowhere. The video talked about a rise in internal security costs and Xinjiang is one of the most heavily surveilled places on earth. Knowing this, it is only logical to assume that this had an impact on the internal security costs, which is why I mentioned it.
      We disagree on the role of the media and economic interests. True, the media has played a big part in spreading the news about the genocide, but most coverage is sound, especially if you know where to look. Investigative journalism is an important means to uncover facts and several of these journalists have played an important role in raising awareness of the genocide.
      Secondly, condemnation of the genocide is not used as a geopolitical tool. When reading the EU Parliament debates preceding the adoption of several resolutions concerning the Xinjiang issue, MEPs are genuinely outraged by the events in Xinjiang.
      As said before, the Uyghurs being Muslims has nothing to do with the indignation of western countries and its citizens. (The islamophobia debate you touched upon has not reached consensus on whether islamophobia is actually increasing, or whether it has become more scrutinised. But again, this has nothing to do with the genocide in Xinjiang).
      The EU has not "banned" or boycotted China, it has merely imposed sanctions on four individuals and companies/government institutions in Xinjiang. This had nothing to do with pleasing the US. The EU has a funny geopolitical position, being in between those two big powers. It was actually against the EU's interests to impose the sanctions, since the Comprehensive Agreement on Investment was cancelled.
      When you talk about Europe etc following the US into war, don't forget the existence of NATO.
      Prioritising talk about a genocide is not "dumbing down".

    • @LauravanderKnaap
      @LauravanderKnaap 3 года назад +5

      @@jayce8978 As I have repeatedly said, my point was that the events in Xinjiang are probably a cause of the rise in security costs. Most of your arguments are beside the point.
      I will respond to them for the last time, after which I think everything of relevance has been said and it would be time to end the discussion. This is a topic that lies very close to my heart and I will always stand up for it, but I also have other things to do apart from spending time in the RUclips comment section.
      The Uyghur genocide is called a genocide because it systematically targets one specific ethnic group, who are killed, harmed and prevented from giving birth. Forced sterilisations and abortions are a completely different thing than the family planning policy and are used to eradicate the group from the source. In addition, the camps cause many to die. Article II of the UN Genocide Convention defines genocide as following:
      a. Killing members of the group;
      b. Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
      c. Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
      d. Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
      e. Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.
      We know that the actions of the CCP in Xinjiang tick at least four of these boxes (a, b, c and d). I am not the only one who labels this a genocide, several scholars already did so last year and an increasing number of countries adopt this label as well.
      Talking about this issue does not deny that there are other problems in this world. If we were talking about any of the other issues you listed, you might have asked me why we were ignoring the Uyghur genocide.
      We don't live in a bipolar Cold War power system anymore. As said before, Europe lies in between the US and China and is connected to both of them in political and economic ways. One would deny the influence of China in Europa when saying that the EU always follows the lead of the US. China has been investing in European countries for decades, some more than others and this became visible when Greece and Hungary blocked a joint EU statement on human rights in China.
      I would argue that no nation on earth is completely free to do whatever it wants with its foreign policy. It always has to take into account how its actions will be perceived by others, what the consequences would be, whether it is in its interest only on the sort term or also long term. The EU's foreign policy is a special case since it is the combined voice of all member states. Some would argue that this makes it a weak international player, while others think the consensus process makes it stronger. Don't forget that the EU also holds important economic leverage and has a high level of soft and normative power.
