Watching the night sky is truly a liberating experience.... Let the dark sky illuminate the heart and mind of all. People of Hanle & Leh are indeed blessed with this heavenly gift... Lets all try to preserve this valuable treasure.

Wow! This is so beautiful and exciting! 💖 now India also a dark sky reserve, here's to more astro tourism! 🌌
I am feeling so awe inspired after watching this I could recognize some of the places shown in the video, I want more people to feel the enchanting beauty of Hanle. and the little girl with the telescope was so wholesome, here's to all the opportunities this step will bring in the village and astro community.

Wow.. this is so wonderful. Thank you all the people involved.
A suggestion., Kindly don't keep the entry to Hanle free,. Keep an amount of 500- 1000 as entry fee. This is why because Indian tourists are very bad, they are sure to destroy the fragile eco system of Hanle, Indian tourists don't value such wonderful things, they will pakka trash with plastic waste. So Kindly implement it and use for preservation of the reserve 🙏

I am an engineer who loves astrophysics. After watching this documentary I travelled a 1000kms around mid July 2023, only to be disappointed.
    1. We couldn't find anyone at the Observatory who could walk us through the incredible workings of it all.
    2. A notice is printed at one of the buildings. "Telescopes are booked by astronomers. There is nothing for visitors to see."
    3. A few people who I assume were technicians, were sitting and they told us to go inside where the telescope is.
    4. Inside the building there is a computer with a slide, you're supposed watch the slide on your own. Without guidance/knowledge the telescope is as good as a rock for visitors.
    5. After coming out of the telescope building I tried to interact with the operators/technicians/scientists or whoever they were. They were least interested in our queries and handily dismissed us by saying this for professional astronomers nothing for you, Go.
    6. Observatory is far from hanle town and on top of a hill, maybe we could see by our naked eyes. but the last straw is YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO STAY AT NIGHT on hill. The photos/videos filled on internet are probably only by people with contacts, money or foreigners.
    7. We couldn't find even a single telescope in any of the homestays nearby.
Do not waste your time going here, you'll only be disappointed. Your curiosity stifled, your excitement gatekeeped.

Went to Hanle mid-september. Stayed in the homestay opposite the police checkpoint. The observatory sends a guy with a telescope to show and tell people about various constellations and planets and whatnot. If one has any requests for seeing something specific (I wanted to see the Ring nebula), the guy will digitally calibrate the telescope for you to see it. People from other homestays were also there to see. The guy charged ₹400 for two people for his time but it was worth it.
I understand that you are disappointed with your experience. But I'm sure the night sky and the Milky way trail that you can see with just your eyes, have more than made up for it.
So please don't discourage other people from experiencing the same.

I am an astrophotographer and have travelled to multiple dark sky reserves and sanctuaries ( proof on my channel)
I think that Hanle should be recoginised as a dark sky sanctuary, and not a reserve. (Sanctuary is better)
For Example, Great Barrier Island (NZ) is a dark sky sanctuary, but it is only a 20-40 minute flight away from a big city like Auckland. However, getting to hanlee is a 5 hour drive from the closest airport.
Also, i think Hanle is very similar to the observatory at altacama desert, which is also labelled a dark sky sanctuary.
So, in my humble opinion, we should re-approach the international dark sky association and get Hanle labeled as a dark sky sanctuary.
Plus a humble request to all those who visit, please respect the area and it rules. Dark Sky tourism can really change the lives of the locals there.

It is remarkable we have been able to locate at the "ideal" spot on earth. At 14800 height (4511.095), this is far higher (about double) than those of American observatory at Cerro Tololo @ 7241 ft (2207m) and Cerro Paranal, “Atacama”, ESO (European Southern Observatory) @ 8645 ft (2635m) -- though the latter two were meant for observation of Southern sky (including South Pole. Higher the height (in rain-less areas) superior will be the "seeing"quality.
It is highly advisable to have a branch Railway line to this spot (to use only when needed), deviating from the proposed Beliyan-Leh Railway route (probably Leh is the nearest station).

Well shot and documented. Wish the quality of narrative was significantly better. What an absolutely pathetic job of narration. Single handedly destroys the feel of the film. Please feel free to reach out for voice overs or a quality narrative job (for free) for your future requirement. I'd be happy to contribute to such a noteworthy effort.
That apart, Hanle looks like an absolute must visit. Look forward to a trip in the near future.
