    Thank you for this great documentary :”) I live in Singapore, the most light-polluted city in the world, but I’m also an avid stargazer. I first noticed that stars existed when I looked up at the pre-dawn sky from my school bus window many years ago, and saw a few blurry dots of light in the sky that didn’t zoom past like airplanes. On good, clear days I can count almost 20+ stars in the night sky, but most of the time I can really only see maybe 5-10 of them. From where I live, I always have to raise my hand to block out artificial city light from my vision while looking up at the night sky. How I wish that we can all enjoy dark skies and see the Milky Way! 💛

    I live in a part of France that has reasonably dark skies. When I show people some of the timelapse videos I've done, I get asked if they are fake because of the number of stars.
    And it's also true, in places with zero to low light pollution, you cast a shadow from the Milky Way. It takes 15-20 mins to get used to the dark. After an hour you get to see shadows. It's actually a little disturbing at first but quick to get used to.

    1:54 I had a moment like this when I went to Northern Michigan for my birthday in the middle of January. I was walking in the woods in the snow with my dad because we were going to climb a hill that is normaly covered in brush during the summer. We weren't useing any flashlights because the moon was so bright, and I had a moment were my eyes just strayed up to the sky as we were walking and I was struck by how amazingly beautiful it was, I had been in the area before and seen the stars but never in the winter when it got darker earlier. It was an incredible moment, just standing in the woods with snow on the ground on a cool night, and just falling in love with that night sky. I will remember that moment for the rest of my life. This video reminded me of that.

      My dad died when I was thirteen
      Your comment and remembering how he seemed most at home in nature made me think of the one card given to me only at the time. On a star filled night sky it read:
      Do not stand at my grave and weep
      I am not there I do not sleep
      I am a thousand glints on snow
      I am with you, where ever you go...

    Thank you for putting this documentary together, sir (and thanks to the International Dark-Sky Association, as well). It touched upon basically all of the key points as to why light pollution is such a problem, and the scourge certainly lit a fire under me, a few years ago. This is what most people don't realize - that it's not just about "seeing dark skies"....that the consequences of light out of place have far-reaching effects for the entire ecosystem. I for one will not rest until the IDA's mission is either complete, or it becomes clear that their objective will end in victory. I believe that we CAN have the lights on, so that everybody can win, and yet save our planet from this curse that we have created. I will turn my rage into activism, my anger into love, and positivity. We need to educate the populace on how easy it is to fix the problem, and how little the alternative will affect our way of life, but the benefits will be outstanding. Change must come to this world.....or, inevitably, change will come.....but one that we will never recover from. There's still time to set things right.

    I'm nocturnal and surrounded by suburban neighbors who have porch lights burning from sundown till mid morning, I've been a fan of motion detector lights for 40 years, I'm tired of it and when I went to talk to one neighbor she ignored me, I thought well that's a neighbor and I could escalate or I could think about it..
    I got reflective dishes in my yard on windmills that make the night sparkle so I'm learning to enjoy that but sure would like the dark back again like it used to be, I spoke to local city authorities and found that there are actually light pollution regulations and that they can come out and ask the owner of the property to turn down their lighting or aim it elsewhere, I'm going to potentially be writing an article about it for local community news, when I was a kid in the 70s every room was decorated with a turn off the light if you're leaving the room sign, odd how things have become

    Sea turtle friendly lighting seems to have the same spectrum as low-pressure sodium, we should have kept these light sources as they’re as efficient as LED, and the lamps are replaceable and recyclable... unlike LEDs which end up as e-waste. Also the narrow spectrum can be completely filtered out by observatories.

    People don't realize how all these incideous forms of pollution are like social diseases slowly inhabiting every facet of life. Anxiety, depression, circadian rhythms affecting sleep ( even todays phones and computers ) as well as a HOST of other maladies. DIS EASEs are rampant as we look for the conveniences of a simpler life.
    The toll of Industry, " The Industrial Age " as well as the now " Technological Age " and their over 200 year reign supercedes natures ability to heal itself naturally, manifesting itself in drastic climate/ environmental changes, flooding, fires, air quality and disturbances etc.

    • @NautilusGuitars
      @NautilusGuitars 3 года назад +1

      As an avid amateur astronomer, I have to say that the complaints about starlink are overblown bullshit and just get repeated by people who either have something against Musk, or who have no idea what they're talking about.
      As an example, over the weekend, I took about 4 hours of photos of the milky way. I captured less than 4 satellites in that time, which were erased with zero effort by the free stacking program I use. In the same amount of time, there were literally dozens of airplanes, some of which had to be manually removed because they don't disappear after a few seconds like satellites. They are fully illuminated the entire path across my shot.
      The satellites don't block anything due to their tiny size, so that's a false argument. They are easily recognizable as satellites, so being confused by them is only a folly of an absolute novice. They dissappear quickly, so nowhere near as bad as airplanes. They are very easily removed from frames, unlike planes. They are being coated now with paint that will make them invisible to all but the most sensitive instruments, so that's a non argument. I could go on and on. The consequences are non-existent compared to the enormous benefits and anybody disputing that is simply doing it out of ignorance or malice. There is literally no valid, honest, and informed argument that they pose any considerable issues. Any argument against them necessarily has to be even more strongly applied to airplanes, yet nobody is doing that because it's obviously ridiculous.

    • @NautilusGuitars
      @NautilusGuitars 3 года назад +1

      Also, the commercialization of space is what will eventually bring us a plethora of newer, better and more timely scientific instruments to understand our universe better. 20+ years of waiting for instruments like JWST will be a thing of the past soon, as private industry will be able to produce better instruments at a faster rate, for a fraction of the cost, and do so with several backups. Mark my words, in the next 20 years, just as has happened with rockets, you will see private industry producing far better instruments (like space telescopes) in larger numbers and for much lower costs. It will be a new revolution in scientific discovery. And it will be much more accessible to the average person. When there are hundreds, even thousands, of Hubble/JWST type telescopes in the sky, the average person will be able to book hours of use on them from their living room and investigate whatever their hearts desire. These things are coming. The cynicism does nothing but slow that process. Be amazed and excited by the possibilities this opens up instead of looking for issues to complain about that are either miniscule compared to the benefits, or will quickly be solved.
