There is a bug where you can still put a rubber/pso on top of an ak/svd when it's folded. They also need to adress that. Sometimes it's visually unfolded but takes inventory space of a folded gun. Even managed to glitch out my aks-74un. It's folded in game, takes less inventory space, has a dovetail cobra, rubber butstock and has the same recoil as unfolded gun.
I remember reading somewhere that the Tarkov devs actually recorded guns being fired, reloaded etc in abandoned warehouses. The fact that Johnathan immediately picked up on that without actually knowing is pretty profound imo.
Amazingly, It actually is a real thing. If you look up the 80rd Makarov PM drum? They do exist and TheFirearmBlog has an article about them. There's also a Reddit post on the ForgottenWeapons subreddit about these, and they're apparently designed for Russian police/SWAT team officers who are using ballistic/riot shields and a sidearm, which makes sense since trying to reload while carrying a ballistic shield can get you killed. In the 1990s and 2000s, Russia was dealing with an economic disaster from the collapse of the USSR which generated a huge increase in crime (both lone wolf criminals and organized gangs/groups like the Russian Mafia) and terrorism. However many police departments couldn't afford to arm all their officers with nice modern carbines/SMGs like the AKS-74u or 9A91 or a PP-19 Bizon. Even to this day, Makarov pistols are still very common to see in police use since they're compact, are battle proven, and they have trained with them for years and years, so there's that familiarity. There's also a machine pistol closely related to the Makarov called the APS Stechkin, it's a full auto machine pistol with a C96 Mauser Broomhandle style wooden stock that doubles as a holster, there's also a variant called the APB Stechkin that is equipped with a folding wire stock and a quick detach silencer. The APS uses a 20rd magazine that looks like an extended Makarov mag, I wonder if the drum could be used on the Stechkin, that would make a LOT more sense. While it's heavy, bulky, and likely is prone to feeding issues, as a niche/special purpose tool for close quarters combat and counter terrorism that's cheaper than equipping officers with brand new carbines/SMGs? I could see the premise behind it. I don't know if these were ever used, but apparently these were made in very small numbers for law enforcement officers carrying ballistic/riot shields. TLDR Yes they exist, produced in very small numbers for cops/SWAT/counter terrorism officers using ballistic shields and a sidearm in one hand.
From that clip it seemed like it's the good ol' limbs eating up damage. Tarkov's body part HP pool system is a great idea but needs a lot of tuning. Hitting some naked scav 5 shots in the torso with a M4 very commonly leads to nothing because the HP system. Theoretically 3 shots to the chest would have killed that Scav, but what happens way too often in Tarkov is only 1 of those 5 shots hit the chest and 2 of those shots hit the stomach and 2 of those hit arms, thus making the target tank way too much damage even without armor. Albeit every time their limb gets hit they are also losing HP in other body parts, but imo Nikita has to make limbs not stop any ammo that has more than 10 penetration point and the projectile should still retain 80% of its original damage if it hits chest after penetrating limbs, or they need to make chest/stomach/head take way higher damage even if someone gets hit in the limbs or other body parts
@@gotanon8958 well he was criticizing the fact that the guy who was getting shot was not reacting to impacts. Lack of sense of power from ur shots. The Big Makarov drum mag is a real thing. However it wasn't made specifically for the Makarov it was made for the "Stechen?" a full automatic Makarov designed with special law enforcement purposes. It's also supposed to have an 80 round capacity however like most drum mags It's really unreliable.
Not really. While both shoot 9x18 Makarov ammo, the Stechkin normally uses a 20 round double-stack mag (There is an 80 mag for the Stechkin) versus an 8 round single stack on the Makarov. No way that tall, thick Stechkin mag fits into the Makarov's mag well. Having said that, I have seen photos of a custom-built Makarov 80 round mag. It likely was made using a combination of the two magazines.
@@jarink1 This is it. They added that custom-made magazine - which only existed in very few examples IRL - pretty much "just because we can", and I think it's a pretty fun detail to add a high-capacity magazine to what's pretty much the crappiest pistol in the game. :D
I want him to see squad for that exact reason. Insurgency has decent audio design but squad is miles better and easily the best shooter sound design out there right now.

He wasn't ever even playing real people these were just little offline games against AI turned all the way down. Would be interesting for him to watch some real gameplay with players using META weapons.
This was a really great watch, I only wish I could like the video multiple times. Most people seem to be commenting on the level of detail Mr. Ferguson goes into with the weapons, which is understandable, however for me what was most impressive were the accuracy of his predictions about which weapons are preferred by players and why, WITHOUT actually knowing the game too well. The fact that a weapons expert talking about just the weapons can be accurate about this speaks volumes about the accuracy of Tarkov and not just how it models weapons, but firefights as a whole.
I love Tarkov! It's super fun to be able to build my actual builds IRL in the game. You also point out my biggest nitpick about Tarkov. The recoil on most automatic weapons (AR/AK, some subs) is way too violent, especially when running a compensator. An AR in .223/5.56 or an AK in 5.45 will have very manageable recoil even with select fire.
also speaking of the muzzle climb, in tarkov you have dozens of skills that increase the more you use them. Recoil control is one of those skills so the guy shooting the AK-101 must have a poor recoil control skill and thats why it's climbing so much
As well as weapon skills. The more you use a certain type of gun the better you get with it. And with the AK-101-104 series some of them are actually pretty hard to get so no surprises someone firing a basically stock AK-101 would be all over the place. Weapons mastering matter BIG TIME in tarkov.
When set to fully automatic, when holding down fire the gun initially jumps up, but comes close to re-centering itself after a few bullets, like it's trying to replicate initial recoil and the shooters compensation for it.
@@slavsupreme5129 there's a character in game named Mechanic, a local gunsmith, who among other things built PM drum mag (by combining factory mag with a PPSH-41 drum), sniper version of sawn off Mosin and even AP round for smoothbore .366 TKM caliber

7:52 I'm surprised he missed this, but a minor detail the game gets wrong is that the front sight should not visible when using a scope. The scope can't focus on anything that is very close to the muzzle, and in real life, the front sight won't obstruct the sights picture.
@@willjepson7770 Based on my experience using an AR with a 3-9x optic, the front sight would be completely invisible. It has to do with how the lens warp light.
@@truedemoknight6784 this is specificaly a sv-98 problem. The front sight is correctly visible in the scope because he is using a wrong ring mount for the scope - a low profile one. If you use correct one this problem doesnt occur.
There is another game that has the mechanic of the direction of fire is dictated by where the gun on the screen is physically pointing: Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth. Another quirk about it is that you can't exactly do 180 no-scope shots in it, because when you move your mouse your character might change direction which you are facing, but there is a slight bit of lag in which he brings the gun up to point in the same direction so if you click the fire button on the mouse too quickly when turning, your shots will go wild.
@@walouinsanityshed I think that's to simulate the loss of control while firing in full auto. I have a hard time imagining every PMC has had 100 hours at the shooting range with every gun in the game :)
@@IckbobTheAwesome Nah, I bet every singel PMC probably got atleast 100 hours on a shooting range. I mean, they are soldiers in a private military company. Scavs on the other hand...
The recoil is more to do with the game being an mmo, they purposely have the recoil set this way for "balance". I do agree though the recoil on some guns can be way to much sometimes and can be frustrating.
@@IckbobTheAwesome recoil is under or over represented in most games. Handgun recoil is almost always under represented and rifle and smg recoil is almost always exaggerated.
He didn't react much or at all to the first hits though. No flinch, no pain, not even sprinting for cover. He just keeps slow walking around, its only once he gets hit lethally that there's any real reaction. Hence the nerf gun comment. To be fair though, for the most part scav AI in tarkov is really good and they react more dynamically to various situations than most games and rarely just stand there like morons when taking fire. Also most of the hits where to the limbs, a chest shot would have had more effect. Still, not the most flattering example of AI being shot in tarkov.
Yeah, I think the player was using a optic zeroed to like 100m at less than a quarter of that distance, so it's possible that several of the shots (especially the early ones) went high over the target, which would also explain why the ones aimed for centre mass were more effective.
I'd love to see Jonathan review the guns in Metro: Exodus (or indeed any of the Metro games) - I loved how the crafting mechanics in Exodus would change the way a gun acted and felt to use (he mentions the drum mag on the Makarov in the vid, but Exodus did this as well, where different configurations of mag, barrel and stock all had distinct advantages/disadvantages. That, and the guns are all technically feasible or are based off real world guns, firing real-world ammo (for the most part), so it'd be interesting to get his take on their design and implementation in the game.
06:40 "A trained person can hold that weapon on target" Funny you say that, because the more you use a weapon, and the more you shoot full auto, the better your character will be at compensating for recoil! (There's general recoil control, weapon class specific skills, and weapon specific "mastering") There's a bunch of other "Character skills" like endurance, strength, stress resistance, cover movement, mag drills etc. and the more you are exposed to stuff, the better your character gets at it. However, if you're not exposed to some of the things you have levelled up, your character will start to loose what he has learned and slowly level down. (A really cool mechanic, but unfortunately it punishes players that are not very active.)
I'm not a gun nut by any means, but I always thought what made tarkov special was the attention to detail when it comes to realistic gunplay. Cool to see a guy that knows his stuff verify just how special this game really is.
Im pretty sure the game states that the makarov drum is a wacky creation by merging a ppsh drum with a makarov magazine.. never made in any production quantity but appearantly theyre easy to make
1:56 "A Russian inventor has developed an eighty round 9x18mm magazine for the Makarov PM pistol. He writes (in Russian) that the Makarov is still in use by police in Russia not because they cannot afford new pistols but because the Makarov is genuinely loved. He says the problem with them is that standard magazine only holds eight rounds and extended magazines only hold up 12 rounds. Twelve rounds is not a lot by todays standards, especially when you consider that the 9x18mm is about 30% less powerful than a 9x19mm NATO. His solution was to develop a drum magazine that holds eighty rounds." It's for sure not widely produced but there definitely are some out in the wild.
Stereotypical Russian soldier: But he is right. Makarov shoot tiny round, better to throw gun at imperialist's head than shoot, and better yet to shoot glorious AK until every motherfucker in room has been taught error of ways.
Until the PMM, the single stack mag was something of a limiting factor. Between that and the compact size it certainly seems more suited for being a backup
Huh, the KS 23 actually makes a lot of sense. The guns were designed with rifled 6 gauge barrels that were originally 23mm autocannon barrels. I hear they were often used with slug rounds as a result, which helps explains the range it has in-game.

Desync and helmets can be a real issue honestly

Recoil control is one of those skills so the guy shooting the AK-101 must have a poor recoil control skill and thats why it's climbing so much
"It's climbing too much!"

Yeah, I think the player was using a optic zeroed to like 100m at less than a quarter of that distance, so it's possible that several of the shots (especially the early ones) went high over the target, which would also explain why the ones aimed for centre mass were more effective.

"A trained person can hold that weapon on target"
Funny you say that, because the more you use a weapon, and the more you shoot full auto, the better your character will be at compensating for recoil! (There's general recoil control, weapon class specific skills, and weapon specific "mastering")
There's a bunch of other "Character skills" like endurance, strength, stress resistance, cover movement, mag drills etc. and the more you are exposed to stuff, the better your character gets at it. However, if you're not exposed to some of the things you have levelled up, your character will start to loose what he has learned and slowly level down. (A really cool mechanic, but unfortunately it punishes players that are not very active.)
They haven't implemented skill retention yet, and don't plan on doing so for a while I believe.

That cheeky smile with the AK made my day. Aha.
May i ask the sauce, please?

"The AK is climbing too much" THANK YOU
It’s 556 like wtf
@@youngnarmer1k82 I thought it was 7.62
@@ffandrewd2986 The AK-47 uses 7.62, but as he mentions this is an AK-101 which uses 5.56. Combine that with a muzzle brake and you won't see much in terms of climb.

@@Ben-ek1fz he's well-spoken, I'll admit that. His refusal to acknowledge some stupidly simple things like the existence of secular morality, the blatant misrepresentation of a bill that ended up putting him in the public eye, his all-meat diet, his extremely reductive worldview based on personal responsibility (that ends up being just a way to justify conservatism), etc. Not to mention the obtuse things he says in interviews and his embarrassing debate with Slavoj Zizek.

They fixed the bug with the magazines and being able to fold stocks lol. I thought it was a trip as well. great vid!

I'm really curious on his opinion about the hellriegel from battlefield 1
I mean there’s only like 3 pictures of the real thing

The hellriegel was never a real production gun. Only a prototype.

i say it to my self when ever i see a place i could fit my finger in
The creator of the game goes to the gun range and shoots many of the weapons in the game so of course he's going to try to recreate them in game as best as possible. Love it
Can he analyse gameplay footage from Hunt: Showdown? That could be interesting for old weapons in XIXth century!
bruh
I'd love to watch this guy play the game for a while and see like a full review cause there's so much more.
The guns are so good in escape from tarkov because the developers actually shot them irl.
Tarkov is the game where you can turn your guns into a christmas tree.
And blind other people with your christmas tree :)
im very late too this and maybe someone else already said this, but the shotgun round at 10:05 might be a 23x75mm Slug. now could be one of the normal buckshot rounds too. but when i played the game i sometimes moded a shotgun into somewhat a short range sniper, with slug rounds.
I've heard that in Tarkov the internals of guns are simulated. Also in a newer update the game doesn't let you fold the stock through the drum
The bullet in the chamber is also simulated, as well. You can look into your buddy's barrel and see even the color of the bullet tip. Not realistic lighting effects to see it like that, but it's there.
I wouldn't think that looking down your buddy's barrel is a good way to check ammo type anyway!
@@TMega5612 5.56 bullets have only one model and texture, so it's not always reliable to check it like this
@@ToriusHeart I'm referring to the rounds that have different models. I wouldn't have mentioned it otherwise.
It's a shame you didn't show him the weapon modding, easily the most impressive part of this game.
