    The IJN Yamato was an engineering marvel for her time...just the turrets without the guns weighed more than a destroyer alone...such a great design too

    • @JohntheLNERP2
      @JohntheLNERP2 2 месяца назад +4

      Indeed though Yamato had flaws in its design such as weaker AA guns compared to both Royal and US Navy battleships and in all honesty I reckon the USS Vermont could've given Yamato a good fight since Vermont had better guns then Iowa

    • @kurumi3502
      @kurumi3502 7 дней назад

      @@JohntheLNERP2 imagine comparing an actual ship that was built over some fantasy ship (the WW2 Battleship Vermont was never built before). Not to mention the Yamato was designed back when Aircraft Carriers wasn't the most dominant ship in naval warfare, hence it had weak AA defense since they didn't thought it was needed, research alittle before u talk shit

      Yamato sunk 2 ships in its career, 1 was completely unarmed and the other had basically run out of ammo. Yamato was too big to fit into docks, had such a heavy rebound on its guns that it shattered windows and tipped over and sunk in minutes after a torpedo plane hit it. A torpedo plane is powerful, but shouldn't be able to take down the largest battleship ever made with one shot.

      To an extent she might be. Yamato will most likely be remembered most as a ship built for the wrong war. At the end of the day it’s kind of poetic. Imagine her as a samurai during its final days. Just like her samurai ancestors she was an ‘old’ relic from the past. Slowly but surely losing power and influence until seen as a liability. Just like the samurai’s final stand back in the 1800s the same would happen with Yamato. Her final battle in my eyes represented the final stand of battleships as carriers, destroyers, subs, and cruisers were replacing them. She never got the true glory of battle and sinking her foes like her ancestors such as in 1905 Russia-Japanese war. But in the end she has represented the end of the old ways of navel battles where now all we can do is wait for what the 21st century of navel wars will look like.

    Yamato was a warship made from Japan in ww2. Yamato was attacked by over 400 aircraft launched from aircraft carriers. Yamato’s mission was to attack a location but was ambushed by those carriers. Yamato’s mission was a suicide Mission so it sank. Yamato had a thick layer of armor in its hull but even with that it still sank. Yamato was packed with many guns, both main and secondary. But Yamato wasn’t made for anti air. It was made for battling other ships. It capsized and v break with either boiler explosion or magazine detonation.

      And what ship are you talking about exactly ? Both Musashi and Yamato were sunk by aircraft with multiple hits from bombs and torpedos, which one sank by destroyers ? i think you are on the wrong ship lol

    • @dylandarnell3657
      @dylandarnell3657 Год назад

      @@i_nameless_i-jgsdf The gun caliber was wasted, because Japan had a fetish for dumb shell designs and couldn't make FC radar. The Iowa-class could engage at much longer range, and its shells could penetrate more armor.
      The only surface engagement of the Yamato-class's career was the Battle off Samar, in which both ships were attached to ADM Kurita's Center Force. Center Force, consisting of 5 battleships & 12 cruisers, was to attack the American forces landing on Leyte. (Ozawa's Northern Force was to lure away Halsey's Third Fleet and act as a sacrificial diversion. Nishimura and Shima's Southern Force was to come up through the south in a pincer attack. Of the 3, only Northern Force succeeded.) Air power whittled Center Force down en route, sinking the _Musashi_ and destroying or crippling 4 heavy cruisers. Kurita pressed on, and attacked Leyte with most of the IJN's naval power - including _Yamato_ and three other battleships.
      The American force left to defend Leyte was Task Unit 77.4.3 ("Taffy 3" for short) under RADM Sprague. Sprague had 6 escort carriers, 3 destroyers, and 4 destroyer escorts. His entire fleet displaced less than the _Yamato_ alone. His largest gunships, the destroyers, each displaced less than one of Yamato's turrets.
      It _should_ have been a one-sided massacre. Instead, the Japanese forces ran without completing their mission.
      Japanese fire-control was almost completely ineffective at long range, nullifying the range advantage of their larger guns. By contrast, the American ships, with radar-guided FC computers, could accurately engage the Japanese ships at maximum range even while maneuvering rapidly. Despite having a range advantage on paper, in order to actually land hits on the American ships, the Japanese had to close to well within the destroyers' gun range. Once they did so, several Japanese ships were unable to depress their guns far enough to target the smaller ships at close range. Lacking updated recognition manuals and assuming only an equivalent force would be giving battle instead of running away, Kurita's forces repeatedly misidentified Taffy 3's DDs, DEs, and CVEs as battleships, cruisers, and fleet carriers - and thus spent most of the battle firing AP shells, which passed through the unarmored American ships without detonating. Redundant systems and excellent damage control allowed the American ships to absorb multiple hits without losing function. Scattered squalls hid the American ships from Japanese fire - but not the other way around.
      _Yamato_ landed three main battery hits on the destroyer USS _Johnston_ and one near miss on the escort carrier USS _White Plains_ (both of which, while heavily damaged, failed to sink), at least one secondary hit on the destroyer USS _Hoel,_ and joined forces with the _Nagato_ and _Haruna_ to finish off the destroyer escort USS _Samuel B. Roberts._ In return, a volley of torpedoes from either the _Hoel_ or _Heerman_ forced her to turn away, removing her (and Kurita) from the battle. In the end, Kurita broke off his attack and retreated.
      For 5 ships sunk and 7 damaged, Taffy 3 had sunk 3 Japanese heavy cruisers, damaged 3 more and 2 battleships, and denied Center Force its goal of disrupting the American landings on Leyte. It was an unambiguous American victory. It was also the only surface action of the Yamato's career. Ergo, my assertion that "the Yamato lost her only surface action to a handful of DD's and DE's" is entirely true and accurate.
      You are welcome to contest the assertion that losing her only surface action to a force that she _outweighed in full_ somehow does not disqualify _Yamato_ from being the "most powerful" battleship.
