Thank you for watching!! I would love to know how you "see" yourself?? I don't think I am alone!! We've also been uploading extra videos on our blog! **Note: if you have ad blockers installed, you may not be able to see the videos!**
Related to this video, I talk more about how I want to apply the Atomic Habits principals to intermittent fasting (and why it wasn't working at first!): www.ithinkwecouldbefriends.com/2020/07/14/how-to-be-a-tidy-person/
We also did a follow up interview with Dana from A Slob Comes Clean about decluttering with health challenges, ADHD, anxiety, depression, kids & teens...you can find that here: www.ithinkwecouldbefriends.com/2020/07/13/how-to-declutter-without-bigger-mess/
We appreciate your support more than you know! THANK YOU, thank you, thank you!!! - Dawn (& Tom & Diana, too!)

I’m pretty sure I remember you also talking with Cas at clutterbug and listening to her has really helped me figure out how I best doing things and perhaps not in the traditional way.
I’ve tried repeatedly to beat my way through atomic habits and never gotten very far so I’m definitely going to try for the “cliff note” version.

I keep holding on to stuff for homeschooling, I see my self as not good enough- can’t keep it clean and tidy- always laundry unfolded and in piles, always crumbs on the floor. Stuff all over the time. I try to tidy more. But I need to be better to give my self grace i guess, I have 6 kiddos 11-1 :) been marries almost 13 years

Minimalism is what normal housekeeping used to be in the 40s and 50s. When mass consumerism and toys started becoming popular in the 70s, all the mothers-in-law were dismayed seeing the livingrooms overrun with toys. The young moms were now going to work, buying more toys, and just thought they were "bad housekeepers". I think your channel, and others, is helping to break this "spell" that has been cast over us.

We’ve been working on simplifying our home since first seeing your videos last summer. I had just had my fourth baby and felt like I was drowning. The other day my nine year old daughter came up to me and said she had a new pile of things she was happy to donate. It almost made me cry! Lol. We’ve made so much progress and couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you Dawn!

I absolutely loved this video. I had a therapist who once told me to envision what a healthy person or confident person would care for themselves. To say to myself if I was someone who was confident what would I do or say. If I was someone who was at a healthy weight what would I chose for lunch and I loved that practice. Now I can say if I was someone who was tidy what would I do or what would I pick up donate etc. thanks for the video and the reminder

I’ve always seen myself as a messy person but knew that’s not who I was. I was sick and tired of being sick a tired of having to clean. I went on RUclips and found you two months ago. I have f tren rid of 9 car loads and counting. I feel more confident and tidier. Even the kids say they like a clean home and they make time to tidy up. We feel like we can do more. Thanks for your work. Your method and the way you talk us through the feelings and hard parts of decluttering has helped a lot. I’ve been sharing you with all my friends and wellness group.

I totally agree! I started observing how I felt when I tidied even the smallest area of my home, and I would say to myself "I love being tidy - this feels great". This was a small step but it helped me to realize that I loved being tidy, and it's consequently become easier to be tidy. I embraced my inner tidy person! I'm going to apply this lesson to my health and fitness too!

Thank you for this video. It must have called to me because I thought about what you said all night. I "see" myself as someone who is unhappy, unhealthy, unmotivated, and unable to stay on top of things. That is SO NOT ME! I laid in bed this morning and thought about what kind of day the happy, healthy, motivated, and "has her sh*t together" me would look like. So, I got up, did load of laundry #1; asked a neighbor to return an item for me when she went out; picked up groceries; did load of laundry #2; started crossing things off my to-do list; and made lunch for us. This was a tremendous help to my domestic engineer husband who has battled disabling migraines the past months, and needed to rest. The "real' me gets things done, takes care of others, and finds a way to feel accomplished. Welcome back, me! :)

I just love your channel so much!!! I am a mom of three kiddos. 6 years old and 4 year old twins. I am also a special needs mom. I have been searching for a way to make my life feel a little less impossible now probably since my twins were born. I came across Joshua Beckers channel after searching for ways to organize my house/life and then found your channel shortly after. Seriously life changing! I have been decluttering my house now for only a short month and cannot believe I never even stopped to think how much my stuff was actually making my life that much harder. I am now in the pursuit to a more simple life. Thank you for being transparent and relatable. Thank you for sharing your journey with the world. This mind shift was exactly what I needed! ❤️

I just casually clicked on this video to watch as I ate my lunch not realizing how impactful it would be! It really hit home as I have also been working to be healthier. I actually do see myself as becoming healthier so I make healthy food choices. That isn’t how I used to see myself or how I would behave. We need to act like who we want to be.
I have shared this video with many friends!

Totally relatable!!! It makes sense that when we see ourselves differently, our actions will flow from that. I also was fit and active in my college years but feel more frumpy, distracted, and scattered as a mom of lots of littles. And I can see how my home reflects that! 😬 Thank you for pointing out that a change of outward habits must begin with, and be perpetuated by, a change of inward/mental habits. 💛 So helpful!

I have struggled with self image for years now, only seeing myself as weak, but after almost seven months of CBT(cognitive-behavioral-therapy), I am now just realizing that my weaknesses were actually my strengths interpreted negatively in my head. Check out the book (audible too) When the Body Says No by Gabor Mate for a deeper understanding of why you think that way. It's amazing and not just "all in our heads" but actual belief systems we've set up in our early development that are stored in our physiology. You can also youtube videos of his lectures. Irene Lyon on youtube is also fascinating in this way and has helped me a lot. She can help you understand your PTSD in a whole body mind way. Not discounting the power of thoughts, but sometimes thoughts can't change till our physiology is in tune and no longer in a fight or flight or freeze state. If you are in that state, logic and thought change isn't easy or accessible. I've experienced it all myself and know it's TRUE. We are not just our minds. You can change.

I so appreciate your sweet spirit! I am a product of the parents of the depression who saved everything "because you never know..." and seeing what I have in my home is so overwhelming I could cry. I am a generational, sentimental, crafty homeschooling mom of four (three of whom have already grown and flown the coop, leaving behind what, I guess, they don't want). Watching your gentle, merciful, kind videos gives me both hope, and that little kick in the pants I have needed to just "begin" reducing. Thank you so much for inspiring me! Blessings!

Dawn, Thank you for sharing your insights and evolution over time - you gave me an “ah ha” moment! Self-perception is so important to how we respond to others and the “outside world.” I’m a senior, and 5 years ago my husband and I downsized from a much-loved 1800sf home to our new home in a 550sf apartment in a senior community. The downsizing process was orderly and I realized I first needed to identify goals and process to retain family “history” (antiques and lovely things left to us from our families) yet still move ahead with modernizing and simplifying our lives. Once I could identify goals and process, the entire downsizing universe of tasks became manageable and orderly. We were happy with our success at downsizing, but we have found that it’s an on-going process as we refine what we have and manage to make our new home work ‘harder’ for us. Loving every moment! But I have to say that your RUclips videos are so clear and so “relate-able” that you help me keep on-track as a ‘tidy person’ who is always thinking how to make more time and opportunities for ourselves. Thank you!!

My pack rat habit mentality that I’ve acquired & accepted over the years has evolved (overtime since watching you ) to me being a reformed pack rat trying to find places for everything and I’ve allowed that to take up my head space by not buying more but organizing what I have.

Seriously, the best book! I came across Atomic Habits about a year ago and my life has changed dramatically. I think the habit stacking principle has changed me the most. Understanding how habits are formed and how we can use the habits we’ve already formed to form more is crazy effective! In the last year I have added 1. Meal planning and shopping (which means I clean out my fridge once a week). 2. Exercise 3. Taking vitamins 4. Daily laundry 4. Running the dishwasher daily 5. Consistent quiet time 6. Water intake 7. Daily self-help reading (a chapter a day) 8. Journaling All from one year’s time and one habit hack from Atomic Habits. 😂 And of course, Decluttering with you! Thank you for your encouragement to be the best homemakers, moms and wives we can be. ❤️

Honestly, you have looked inside my brain today! Almost 11 years ago, I became a full time mum, no longer a forward planning, high earner. I became anxious and like a fish out of water without my old routine. And first time motherhood is so isolating and lonely! Anyway, we have 4 children now and in the past 18 months I discovered Marie Kondo, decluttering and minimalism. Still a way to go but I know where I want to get our home and amount of belongings to be. We’ve literally filled around 8 skips over 12 months with stuff. Now, I need to find who I am and do some self development. Glad I saw this today!xx

I see myself as “messy”, too, and that really makes it hard to tidy sometimes. I find myself getting easily overwhelmed. I’m an artist and I homeschool, so I always have paperwork and books and projects everywhere. I’m trying to train myself to put things into their “homes” and not be afraid that I will forget about things if they’re out of sight! Thanks for this encouragement!

I have always seen myself as undisciplined. Your video was very helpful to see that over the past year’s minimizing work I actually have been quite disciplined and worked very hard! I think with some effort over time I could actually see myself as a person who is disciplined, a person who is tidy, a person who follows through! None of those things would have defined me before my 30’s but little by little I have actually made important changes!!! Thanks SO much for your videos Dawn! You are such a source of encouragement!

I'm feeling this shift in myself and just wrote that as a Praise in my planner yesterday. God has been working in my heart (ie shopping at all the craft and decor stores and leaving without feeling the need to buy one thing) before I found you, throughout the last year, and my goals have risen from that and finding your vids! I'm now attacking clutter in little bits, but ruthlessly... one basket, drawer or pile at a time. We've been in our home for three years and there is stuff everywhere, even some in boxes, because we are renovating (extremely slowly due to hubby's work). Being a homemaker, I realized I was getting depressed about it because most of that is out of my hands....but recently I realized I could at least significantly reduce our inventory so that I could clean more easily. It already feels so much better, so much more peaceful, and I've just been chipping away at things for a month, if that. Thank you. 😎🙏

I used to get to those ice breakers where you list your name and 6 ways you’d describe yourself and have like two positive ones and be stuck. It’s amazing how we can transform our homes and our habits and forget that we can renew our minds too! Great reminders! Excited to test out the book service! I can be down for that! Thank you for the reminder to not think of myself in a negative way. Your brain physically changes with negative vs positive thinking. Theses brain scans are amazing to see. Negative and depressive thoughts show the neurons to be thorny while positive happy thoughts appear to be like full trees with lots of connections. This video reminds me of the quote "What would you attempt to do if you knew you could not fail?"

I think without the combination of this book and Greg McKeown’s book “Essentialism The Disciplined Pursuit of Less” I would be finding 2020 a lot harder to get through. I have been a slob, but in looking back, having five kids and a husband who worked from home, crammed into 1,300sq.ft. just left me feeling overwhelmed and hopeless! I wish people did not view "clean" things as a negative thing. Or, someone who enjoys cleaning as an "OCD perfectionist." I mean, I just like a clean and clutter-free home but the labels get to me at times. Seriously, do the same people that tend to label homemakers who love homemaking go into 5-star hotel rooms and say, "oh my gosh, this is so clean, there must be OCD perfectionist people here who clean these rooms."
No, probably the opposite. They are happy to see the room clean and most likely are disgusted if it's not super tidy.
      Just some food for thought😁

I’m so glad you touched on this! We’ve got three kids from 7 months to a little over 4.5, and I’ve been feeling like such a mess (and stressed and grumpy), but I realized that I started telling myself that’s who I was. My poor view of myself started feeding on itself. I finally realized that, and switched to telling myself that I’m patient, it’s okay that I mess up, I’m sleep deprived, it’s okay take a break. I started viewing the bad as opportunities to improve instead of a rut I was stuck in. How we talk to ourselves is scarily powerful; we have to make sure we’re kind to ourselves.

Thank you so much for this! Last week I dug out a box of old journals and started going through them, and it was a more difficult process than I thought, because they're full of my teenage thoughts and dreams and hobbies that I've long since abandoned due to my responsibilities now as a wife and mother. Those things were part of my identity for a long time, and they are things I still see myself as "good at," but I have a hard time 1) being vulnerable enough to start working on them again (singing and writing), and 2) making time for them. Most of the time it's really easy to find an excuse to keep those things a buried part of my past rather than part of who I still am (because I do still very much enjoy those skills). Your video helped me feel motivated to get going and carve out time to pursue those interests again because who I am is important too, just as much as everything else important in my life like my family.

Girl I relate! For almost a decade after having my son I was running and working out and training for half marathons and marathons. It was cool and amazing to witness a transition of myself from “non-athletic” girl who only did yoga, last one picked in gym, kind of hated exercise.... to “athlete.” As John Bingham terms it, “adult onset athlete” lol.
After I injured my knee in a marathon a few years ago, I stopped running altogether, and a non-running, non fit habit became my new normal. But so true that how we see ourselves an d self talk has everything to do with what we do in our lives. I
also used to see myself as a very neat and tidy person. In college I kept my room pin neat. After 4 kids and a lot of stressful life events I don’t view myself that way now. Although I made good headway for a few years recently. I notice the more clutter build up the less energy I seem to have for dealing with it.
I think the piles block our motivation somehow.
