    How to bind your DX6i with your Sport Cub: • How To Bind Spektrum D...
    The Sport Cub S2 is an amazing RC plane. If you're a beginner pilot looking for a 4-channel plane to learn on, the Sport Cub is one of the best! Even advanced pilots will enjoy the ease of flying this rc plane because they know with a flip of a switch, it can quickly turn into an acrobatic flier. What sets it apart is the "SAFE" technology which basically helps keep the plane flying level when you ease up on the controls (as long as you have enough power). As you'll see from the video, it's almost as if the plane flies itself.
    It is advertised as "FPV ready" and all that really means is that it can carry a small camera/transmitter set up. If you're planning on flying FPV with the Sport Cub S then I highly recommend getting the BNF version and buying the DX6i transmitter for a better range.

    I bought myself one of these for Christmas. I went out to our local park that happens to have a decent R/C field. I met an old friend there that helped me trim it out and manually adjust rudder. This thing is the most fun I have had since I was a teenage kid (46 now). I flew through 2 battery chargers and ran out of daylight waiting on the 3rd charge. I would say I am hooked since I have been waking up all night waiting for daylight so I can go back! Have 4 more batteries on the way with multi port charger so I get more fly time.

      Thanks for the comment. It's a fun plane that you don't have to stress about crashing.

      Erik Summer - Well I went out of beginner mode and even to advanced mode too quickly! I saved it a few times with panic button which works well if you are not too low. After getting too brave one more time, I did a nose dive and busted fuselage up! I was able to repair in field while recharging battery. Then the wind picked up and knowing I should go home I proceeded to stick it in the top of a pine tree about 50 feet up! After 2.5 hours and a fishing rod, I finally got her down safely! I am hooked to say the least!

    I notice most people taking off with RC planes (especially tailwheel) let it swerve left and then correct it after they are airborne. There are 4 forces trying to turn your plane left as you takeoff and they can mostly be corrected with a little right rudder. 1)torque 2)P-factor 3)gyroscopic precession and 4)spiraling slipstream. Anytime your are at high relative power and slow relative airspeed these 4 left turning tendencies are more pronounced. As you push the throttle forward, roll in some right rudder.

    Nice video! We are really lucky to have this kind of plane available for beginners (or anyone who wants to slow fly in a tight space) these days. Even just 20 years ago i had to teach myself with a 2 channel plane which was actually a 6' span motor glider. Looked intimidating but was a gentle giant. Was an adventure i will treasure but this little cub would have made it all so much easier for me and i think i would have accumulated more flying hours in less time. Sadly the wings of the motor glider eventually folded whilst teaching my brother to fly but again, had we had this Cub then that would not have happened. Some lucky people are going to find one of these under the Christmas tree this year i am sure!

    Sweet video. I have one, too. This is my first plane, I have only flown it once (6 batteries worth of flight time), its been too windy around here since, but the one time I flew it, it as easy and fun. I bought the simulator, RealFlight 8, to practice on. The one time I flew it, I took off in Beginner mode, then flipped the switch into Intermediate to have tighter turns. I did try Expert and did couple barrel rolls and flips, but chickened out and went back to Intermediate mode. I landed it in Beginner mode, I discovered it was pretty important to keep the cub in front of me, because I'm an above the knee right leg amputee, in a wheelchair, and can't turn around quickly enough to follow it. The only time It crashed was when I was flying it toward me and let it go over my head, past me. It hit a stand of pine trees about about 15 feet high, tumbled to the ground and was fine - I had cut the power as it flew past me. After I retrieved it, it took off and flew again. I'm looking forward to flying it again, when the winds die down a bit. I have since bought the Mini Apprentice S and am awaiting its arrival. I heard that the Mini Apprentice is another nice plane for beginners, like me. Being a bigger plane, I'm looking forward to it.

    Great video, I have both the sportcub, and carbon z cub, and love them both. Just got the z so haven't flown it, but have flown the sportcub for a year, and use a HK wingcam. I had a supercub and got it stuck in a tree, when I got to it someone took it. Good thing I bought the upgrades, but didn't install them. Anyway I've been looking at getting my five year old a plane as he is flying a co-axial helium, and he wants a plane like papa's, and it's blue. Side note I wouldn't have my kids trying to catch planes, it's a no-no with the AMA, and I have to remind mine even with the wind up ones.

    I love the video man. I just wish you would have done it with FPV. A lot of people think these are expensive toys and depending on how they are used they are.
    The video was great. I can only imagine how much more fun and competitive it would be to have adults run after the plane. There was recently a quadcopter or multirotor that dropped drugs in a prison in Texas. And the guards were ordered not to shoot it down for fear of deflection.
    But I have to say this is a great hobby if used non violently and as long as you get the ones that look fun I don't see anyone having a problem with it. The only problem is that people today are out there to do harm to others reps. And its just sad. But keep up the videos. Great to see you and the family enjoying the same activities.

      Jerry Hillman It is a golf course so the grass is pretty short. I'm guessing the grass where I take off/land is around 1/2" . The wheels are pretty small so you'd need short grass!

    This is a great plane, super fun, I have one slight problem though, I can't get this thing to stop stalling out, I'm not sure what it is as I have flown in absolutely still weather and it still stalls for me, any ideas??

    • @ErikSummer
      @ErikSummer  8 лет назад +1

      +Ph34s4nt I had the same problem. Even with full elevator down trim it still wanted to nose up and linger on a stall if I had less than 50% throttle. I took some needle nose pliers and gently pinched the elevator rod (right where the "U" bend is) so I could actually get the nose to go down. This will make your plane a lot faster so be careful. I think it flies better but a beginner pilot might not like the extra speed. I can see why it was designed this way. It keeps beginner pilots from flying too fast and crashing. True, it does stall more if you don't keep the throttle up, but it does make this plane very easy to fly since it seems to always want to climb.

    How many minutes of flight time do you average with the 150mAh 1S battery?

    • @ErikSummer
      @ErikSummer  5 лет назад

      If you fly conservatively, you'll around 8 mins per battery. If you’re flying full throttle and doing tricks, you’ll get 5 mins. These little batteries are cheap and easy to carry so you’ll want to get more than one.

    I have the Hobby zone Champ plane with a DSM2 controller.
    Can I use that controller to fly the Sport Cub S ?
    Or do you have to buy the Ready to Fly version and get
    the controller with the extra switches for
    the "panic button" and the select a level switch for beg, int, or advanced ?

    • @ErikSummer
      @ErikSummer  8 лет назад

      Does that one have a switch in the back? I'm pretty sure it'll work but if you don't have the extra channel switch, it can only be flown in beginners mode. Which basically limits your control inputs to help keep the plane stable in flight.

    • @ErikSummer
      @ErikSummer  7 лет назад +2

      It will switch from beginner, intermediate and advanced.
      In beginner mode, you'll be limited to making very slight pitch, roll, and yaw. As long as you have enough power the plane shouldn't stall and will almost fly itself. The AS3X will keep the plane level when you let go of the controls.
      Intermediate will give you more control authority and will still auto level.
      Advanced will have no auto level and will give you full control to do 3D flight. The AS3X will still smooth out bumps in the air but won’t level itself out unless you manually hit the switch.

    Hi Great video.
    I just bought the RTF version with the control included. Just wondering if the dx6 gives greater range than the standard controller or is range limited to the planes receiver? also have you had to replace a motor ? If yes how did you remove it from the gearbox with out disturbing the gearbox mount into the foam? Cheers mate.

    • @ErikSummer
      @ErikSummer  8 лет назад

      +G Kesbah The dx6 will give better range, but the included remote will work fine. You'll notice it cutting out and that'll be your range. I noticed around 250 feet on the included transmitter. The good thing about the Sport Cub is when it cuts out, it flies so slow and stable that it shouldn't be much of a problem. Or better yet, have a friend walk away with it while you hold the transmitter and you can determine your range that way. I've never replaced the motor. If you do, you will have to replace the gearbox/motor together since they're glued together. My gear has popped out after crashing but I've always been able to just push it back into place. Here's a video showing what it looks like inside: ruclips.net/video/glCCbniUZII/видео.html

      +G Kesbah Hi, yes it's by pinkzebra - ruclips.net/video/LfJnmKre5D0/видео.html Also, if you like the Sport Cub S, you might like the UMX Radian, it's a micro glider and is a lot of fun to fly. It'll stay up for a long time and great for when you want to have a relaxing flight. Here's the video I did on the Radian glider: ruclips.net/video/6RN1FV0w3fE/видео.html

    • @glennallan8315
      @glennallan8315 8 лет назад +1

      +Erik Summer Thx Eric , great song. I noticed in your radian review you were using the efliteMLP6DSM transmitter towards the end of the video. Was this the cheaper transmitter that randomly cut out? It is the same transmitter that came with my sport cub s and twice i lost all control while in expert mode setting up for a loop , the plane did a dive into the groud and panic button did not respond.. I am thinking of buying a more powerful transmitter but the dx6i is a little bulky and heavy for my weak hands. I have been looking at a dx4e transmitter and wonder if you think a dx4e would give greater range and less likely to cut out compared to the Eflite MLP6 dsm ?? apppreciate your advice.

    • @ErikSummer
      @ErikSummer  8 лет назад +1

      +G Kesbah I see a lot of people using the neck straps to take the weight off the transmitter, this one is $5 amzn.to/1RHe1el Yes the DX4E would be a big step up. My eflite MLP6DSM worked fine for flying close and slow. I'm not sure if it was interference but it would cut out for a split second several times each flight, which usually isn't a problem if you're cruising slow. Most of the time you wouldn't notice it unless you're pulling aerobatics, at which point I'd upgrade to the DX4E or the DX6i.

    I got mine today and I haven't touched the rudder at all, is this a bad habit or is there little point when there are ailerons? I've also noticed I kept bumping the switch and flew most of my first flight in intermediate.

    • @ErikSummer
      @ErikSummer  9 лет назад

      fragmen52_ The AS3X system will actually add some rudder automatically which helps with turns. It's not a badhabit as long as you're not working your way up to more advanced planes. I have a p51 Mustang that needs rudder in a turn or else the tail slips and it takes forever to turn. If you’re sticking with easy to fly park fliers then
      rudder wont be that important.

      +len allan It is difficult to roll. It needs a lot of nose up with plenty of speed and even then it struggles. Also it'll only do it in advanced mode. A good step up is the T-28 Trojan which is a little sportier: ruclips.net/video/mOrKivgy8qM/видео.html It uses the same batteries and pretty much the same electronics except it has no AS3X.

    Just bought my daughter one of these ,we`ve had it flying quite nicely,but I can`t seem to get it out of beginner mode.I have all the screens set up as per the instructions for the DX6i,but it doesn`t seem to affect the flight characteristics.Any chance of showing pictures of the setup screens?

      Did you try the "gear/F mode" on the top left? That switch changed mine from Beginner mode to Full Control. That was the default settings after binding it, I didn't change any settings on my DX6i.
      This might help: www.manualslib.com/manual/836383/Hobbyzone-Sport-Cub-S.html?page=5

      thanks for the prompt reply.

    Is there an "oh crap" button on the spektrum controller?

    • @ErikSummer
      @ErikSummer  8 лет назад +2

      +Ashley Craig Good question, by default the "oh crap" switch on the Dx6i is on the top left. (Flaps I think) What that'll do is when on, it'll limit your flying so you don't over bank or pull up/down too much. And when you let go of the controls, the gyro will return the plane to level flight (assuming you have enough power applied). Just make sure to keep up the throttle and the plane will be super stable in calm winds.
      If you switch it off, it will only fly with AS3x, which basically corrects for bumps in the air and will let you take full control of the airplane.

    Would this plane work with my Tactic TTX650 radio?

    • @ErikSummer
      @ErikSummer  7 лет назад

      It's not easy but it's possible. It's currently out of stock, but this is what you'll need to get it to talk to "BNF" DSMX/DSM2 planes like the Sport Cub S - hobbyking.com/en_us/orangerx-dsmx-dsm2-compatible-2-4ghz-diy-transmitter-module.html

    should I get the Apprentice or the Sport Cub S?

    • @ErikSummer
      @ErikSummer  8 лет назад +2

      They are both easy planes to fly but the Apprentice is much larger! I went with the Sport Cub S because I can fly it almost anywhere. The problem with the Apprentice is you would need a larger field and I'd be much more nervous about hitting someone with the Apprentice vs. the Sport Cub S. Plus I love how cheap the batteries are for the Cub. You can keep flying over and over with just a few batteries that cost less than $10 each.

    • @davidbutler1857
      @davidbutler1857 7 лет назад +1

      I'd get the Apprentice. The Sport Cub is really meant for flying indoors or outside on a really calm day with zero wind. If you actually want to learn how to fly, you need a bigger plane that can handle some wind. Otherwise the weather will never cooperate.

    hey i just want to ask what is this plane made out of

    • @ErikSummer
      @ErikSummer  7 лет назад

      It's pretty much all foam with reinforcements in the wing. Most smaller rc planes are made of foam because of its combination of strength and weight.

    • @amariondawson7239
      @amariondawson7239 7 лет назад

      ok

    • @davidbutler1857
      @davidbutler1857 7 лет назад +1

      It's made (literally) of egg carton foam for the wings and control surfaces, and a basic styrofoam for the fuselage. Very flimsy.

      Amarion Dawson Foam, but it doesn't get damaged easily.

    How do I pair my controlled to fly with it?

    • @ErikSummer
      @ErikSummer  5 лет назад

      What controller are you using? If it's the one that came with the RTF version then follow these steps. 1. On a flat level surface, turn on the plane. 2. Turn the controller on (with throttle full down) bring the throttle to full then back down to zero. 3. You should see the blinking red light turn solid red inside the plane. Make sure the controller is around 3 feet from the plane, not too close and not too far away.

    How were you able to fly on a golf course? Nobody playing that day? Did you have to ask permission before you went there? Just wondering cause I just couldn't imagine being able to do that around here. They would call the cops for sure. I hope to be able to fly at a football field or baseball field when no one else is around. Good luck with that.

    • @ErikSummer
      @ErikSummer  7 лет назад +1

      I only fly my micro planes over there and only after the last golfer has left the course. I'd never go out there while people are playing. No one has ever complained because I'm very respectful of the course and people. Plus this one turns into a park at sunset. Lots of dog frequent the course so I'm the least of their worries. I'll take my bigger planes to flying fields. You wouldn't think so, but there are a ton of trees here in Arizona, making it tricky to find a good spot to fly.

    • @ErikSummer

    how well can it fly in Wind ?

    • @ErikSummer
      @ErikSummer  9 лет назад

      +ST Logan Pretty well considering how light and small it is. The AS3X and the large control surfaces do a good job at correcting for gusty winds. If you turn the AS3X off, you'll notice a big difference in how it handles wind. I've flown it in winds around 10 mph, any more than that and it gets sketchy!

    • @ErikSummer

      You're paying for the SAFE technology (basically a gyro that keeps it flying level) built into it. Yes, it's flimsy foam and does feel cheap but in a lot of ways it makes it more durable. For a small park flyer ready to run with a gyro system, $129 really isn't bad. The Sport Cub is amazingly easy to fly and while it can't handle a lot of wind, you really can't beat it if you're looking for something to fly in a small field.

    • @swimskim5874
      @swimskim5874 7 лет назад +1

      If you were a beginner and I were to take out that SAFE tech,you would surely find a way to face plant it into the ground.
