Caterpillar is the most interesting NPCs we’ve met so far in Fontaine.
He has lot of lore hidden in his mind but also deeper philosophical thoughts too. Are you a good person if you are doing good but not by instinct or because of feelings, just by choosing to imitate them. The end result is the same so does it matter. He’s analysing himself and his actions, not always the kindest critic to himself.

@@tartnouveau3652 That's because because of Rene mentioning both of these things. Rene commissioned an adventurer to go to Dragonspine and obtained Scarlet quartz and found out that it had similar properties as Elynas flesh and blood as confirmed by Jakob. He got the Chasm ooze the same way and that's also mentioned by Rene. There's also the mention of Rene still trying to save Carter and wanting to process Carter for rebirth. It's a natural conclusion that Cater could be Carter.

It's worth noting that Arlecchino isn't unique, the Fatui Operatives also have blackened hands. They also have strange red-coloured powers that mirror those in Arlecchino's leaked character sheet... It could be the House of the Hearth uncovered Rene's notes like Vacher did Jakob's.
Also, Arlecchino and Caterpillar's blackened extremities resemble the symptoms of the Khaenri'ahns undergoing hilichurlification that we see in the notes near the gate to Khaenri'ah.

As soon as I saw carter's hands I was immediately invested in that world quest
In the Caribert quest, Clothar told us that pure blood Khaenrians were cursed with immortality while Khaenrian immigrants from the 7 nations became hilichurls
His son being partly from mostadt due to his mother resulted in him being a hilichurl instead of immortal
With that in mind in the fontaine archon quests there was a heavy emphasis on Arlecchino being from fontaine which I found to be odd, with the idea that she could potentially be a hilichurl meaning she could've been in khaenriah centuries ago
Though there's still alot of questions raised from that
When and how did she regain her human form?
Is her ability to see through focalors Curse a variation of Carter's persuasion ability?
This would also mean she's a sinner for being both a khaenrian and also fontainian which would beg the question if she'd even dissolve via primordial water when she's already cursed to be a hilichurl

There are many hints about the curse of the wilderness not being exclusive to khanre'iah, one of them is the lawatrul called Ukko in dragonspine when you do the in the mountains quest, And if you read the the gold chest to unlock the door to the location of the murals, Ukko was a priest of the now fallen kingdom of sal vingdagner which is now dragonspine. Another hint is from an artifact set, which suggests that the king of gurabad was turned into a wolfhound or some abyss creature.

@faizaholajide6913 it's been so long since I had to think about dragonspine I almost forgot about it
But you're right, though it does make me wonder how could thousands, if not possibly more of people were all turned into hilichurls all at once
      The mass transformation is odd
It could be that the curse of the wilderness could be inflicted through other means in a limited range by individuals
But to inflict a large portion of a civilization could be possible in the hands of Celestia

It's possible arlechinno was simply suffering from the same thing carter was (the contamination in the hands), caterpillar chooses how he appeared as a child when he transforms because it's like an ode to his original form maybe as a young carter? obviously arlechinno was saved also but retains the staining in her arms and it's probably no coincidence she's also in charge of an orphanage that could be closely related to the orphanage that jacob and rene were part of a long time ago.
The question is WHO was the original knave, we know he abused and used the children in the house of the hearth for his own ends ( see freminet's dialogue)

Talking about the "curse" of Khaenri'ah, the Abyss and Rene's procedures.
I theorised that the curse is actually an illness/corruption born of the Abyss, which has different effects depending on how much the population afflicted by it can resist it (as in, how immune to it they are) along with intent.
So, we would have the majority of the population that is very vulnerable to it (Hilichurls), a few less (Husks and Abysslings) and the minority that can withstand it better (the "pure bloods", who retain their humanity).
Also, another dividing factor between who becomes Hilichurl/Husks and Abysslings is, I noticed, intent.
Abysslings retain their intelligence, and have chosen to be corrupted (An example is Klingsor from the Kvharena quest, and Jakob from the Narzissenkreus), while Hilichurls were unwilling victims who did not chose to be corrupted.

Fun fact Cater wasn't going to be the last. If you find and read the documents they say, that the next experiment will be that of a sixteen year old in order to develop more data on their experiment. Cat was the only one that was going to use a child. Meaning that Arlecchino may be the second version, the one started at age sixteen until they perfect her or an even later model.
Plus when you see her development and design art you can see that the arms are actually part of her body and where she warps her flesh and blood as what appear to be swords and spears. So outside of Cater being able to change from human form to Hilichurl it seems that Arlecchino has a level of control over her form far beyond him. So she may very well be a much later or final version of the project which Cater was the prototype.

You are starting to be one of the very few Genshin theorists here on RUclips who I trust to handle the lore properly wwwww as soon as I saw the thumbnail I was like WAIT, I WANT TO WATCH IT RIGHT NOW--
When 4.1 came out my friends and I had an *extensive* talk about this new, absolutely bonkers world quest. It didn't make my jaw drop like the book of revelations did, but when Cater transformed it was VERY close lmao. I commented back on one of your previous Narzissenkreutz videos, and I definitely have to retract some of my previous statements: the whole Cater Carter thing is WAY on the nose at this point; so I'm pretty sure Cater is definitely Carter who is also definitely colonel Kate. I still can't quite locate the mysterious light haired kid mentioned in A Story, but since Cater is light haired as well maybe it's Carter after all... ? The timeline doesn't really check out considering that Carter is supposed to be slightly older than the rest of the crew, but I guess that's a can of worms for a different day.
Now I have to admit, I'm mostly leaning towards the interpretation that Rene took Carter's consciousness and transplanted it somewhere else, thus creating something entirely new (Cater). This would be very much in line with many of Fontaine's themes of multitudes merging together to create an entirely different being (Rene/Master/Narzissenkreutz is an example, but so is the Oceanid in the first act of the Archon Quest, made up of all the women murdered by Vacher) BUT I MUST SAY... your theory definitely holds some water as well 👀
There is definitely something odd with Rene and Jakob's lineage and body composition, and I'm not sure if I should attribute this only to the fact that they are fully Fontanians (something something something if all Fontanian women have the potential to merge into Oceanids maybe men have some similar features too?) - considering that Karl also is described as being different from Rene and Jakob and there shouldn't be any indication that Karl is anything but Fontanian himself. Maybe it's something that has to do with people from Poisson, or the de Petrichor/Baker family???
... Gosh, while I was typing this comment I realised that the word Petrichor is composed of petra, rock, and ichor. Now, if we look at the Wine Goblet of the Pristine Sea, who combined ancient rock and ichor to create an entirely new set of living beings.................. hm
    ... anyway!
I agree that, whatever Jakob and Rene are, Carter definitely isn't. My personal tinfoiled hat theory is that he is at least partially Sumerian, mostly because as you said - his disease really reminds me of Eleazar (with the fact that Alain -iirc?- even sent blood and skin samples to Sumeru for them to examine... again, Alain Guillotine and Zandik crossover episode when?) and, since Eleazar is caused from the presence of forbidden knowledge in Sumeru, we don't really have evidence of that being present in Fontaine. For now, at least...
Carter's lineage aside, it makes sense that, therefore, whatever worked on Jakob could have never worked on Carter. As you said, Rene could have DEFINITELY learned his way around these funky techniques through Khaenriahn notes, considering that he deeply engrossed himself in studying Khaenriahn magic and formulas as close as possible. Maybe Khaenriahns too envisioned a world where sweet flowers and mint wouldn't grow, and they too tried to transcend humanity in a way that horribly backfired... while I do need to ponder a bit longer on this, it could definitely make sense. There is something to be said about how Teyvat is strictly cyclical and every story repeats itself (speaking of which, I was very VERY surprised to learn how much Remus' story mirrors Primordial One's), and about how when every civilisation gets to its apex something goes wrong and humanity reverses to a primitive state. Like, how primitive are we talking? Hilichurl-kind of primitive?
Because the only thing that doesn't really sit right with me is that, if Khaenriahns were maybe aware of the cycles, I'm not sure why they were caught off guard when they stepped into the desert and started turning into monsters (hilichurls). But once again I'm here splitting hairs; I think it's definitely possible that Carter was turned into a Hilichurl by Rene's attempt of making him "transcend" - don't quote me on that, but didn't the dying Hilichurls in the chasm also turned into black splotches of abyssal goop after the Dain quest... ?
That, or Rene just shoved Carter's body into the mud in an attempt to preserve him, which is not too farfetched considering who we're talking about.
Anyway, another very good video with definitely some food for thought! Gotta start following this channel more closely, I really appreciate your insight on the plot and it's definitely good to hear such informed second opinions when it comes to this mess of a lore.
PS: I know this isn't really about her, but while I don't know if Hoyo is brave enough to shove a main character in a world quest (they barely ever do so; even thinking about Sumeru's big world quest I can't remember any big character being mentioned in them), I still haven't let go the hypothesis that Arlecchino might be Lyris, now that we have confirmation that she is a real person that existed at some point in history.
Design elements aside that make me think that, with her being the 4th, she might probably not be fully human (her blackened hands as you mentioned; her eyes; but also the fact that many part of her outfit remind me of fins, in a bit of an Oceanid theme), when I heard Cater say that Lyrs was called "Red Empress" my heart jumped a beat.
This is the only way I could partially agree with the wiki in saying that Lyris is the director of the Narzissenkretuz institute, an interpretation that I just struggle SO hard to agree with. From what little we can deduce, the actual director was probably absorbed by Rene at some point: I wonder now if Lyris is to the director what Ann is to Mary-Ann, just a "happy accident" that resulted in the creation of someone who is somewhat similar, but not quite identical to whatever they was in the first place. Someone who then tried to follow in the footsteps of their original counterpart, but with their own twisted agenda...
Either that, or indeed the result of some other silly experiment from our one and only, Rene de Petrichor. Man, I can't wait for 4.2 😭

This was so good and much more articulate than me screaming “he was CARTERPILLAR!!” When I finished the quest.
Idk if all fontainians are dissolvable is related to the neo humans thing, but it sure is interesting. I think that one is more related to the Remuria story. I’ve got no proof whatsoever and am not smart enough to do a whole essay on it but my crack theory is that fontainians are dissolvable cus they were all dissolved in the past once already/have been contaminated by dissolved people soup in the past. Maybe Remus succeeded in liquifying at least some of his people, but didn’t manage to put them in robot bodies, instead it got out and went into the primordial sea and got recycled into other humans. Also this sorta maybe contributed to how melusines happened?? Cus their origin story is wild and seems outta nowhere, but makes a lot more sense how a whole race of magical conscious beings were formed if: magical god flesh was catalysed by an explosion that embedded bits of pneumaousia powered robot parts and tainted human flesh featuring dissolved human juices into abyssal dead god flesh.
Anyways thanks for your thought provoking video!

I think, from the Archon Quest and Story Quest Alone, even the Event Quest, I don't think this is just a Celestia or Khaenri'ah problem, it is a Teyvat Problem.
This must be likely a Sovereign Problem all together. Think about it, Chlothar said there is two type of curses? What if the curses are not Celestia Exclusive... What if... This is Archon/Dragon/God Residue. I don't think Chlothar was lying, it's just how he perceives the whole thing. All of things Chlothar said is what he sees and told of. Maybe the curse of the Wild is a Teyvat Curse while the Curse of Immortality was a Celestial Curse?
Remember the Invasive Jelly Fish Story Quest? The Fontaine Researcher was responsible for creating Glowing Jellyfish, what he didn't expect is the buyers, who he sold the Jellyfish to, are purposely buying and releasing them to the wild because they thought he was commiting a Crime against Humanity... Until they got caught of course.
What if Celestia, or even the Abyss, is those Invasive Force, out of Well-Intentioned Good Will or Instinct, tries to help or Invade Teyvat by ridding the Sovereign. And both sides are trying to course correct that and failing.

She's based on Dark Fu Hua+Raven from HI3 and Dark Fu Hua is the precursor to HoS, who has mind control powers and is reborn from a dead body.
On top of that she would reference Kafka's mind control powers and Hoyo likes to run HSR and Genshin story themes in parallel it seems (dragons of water, rebirth, etc.)

I wonder, if "Curse" was supposed to save lives originally. Could it have been originally a "Medicine" for Irmin, who should have been indisposed at the time of Cataclysm? And maybe it just went far beyond Irmin himself or maybe it did work on Irmin right when the cataclysm was happening, and either sages or irmin himself thought that it can save the nation too (not the smartest move, but nothing new according to Pierro i guess)

my mind was blown when Carter's true identity was revealed and I also immediately thought of The Knafe. however, the theory about her "gift of persuasion" is cool, but if it only works with the truth, shouldn't it be like... harder to control people you need to control o? bc if the gift works and affects "the truth" that the listener knows, accepts and wholeheartedly believes in, like the guards in Meropide, then yes, it should work, however, what if they don't? then, it's practically useless imo, no? to convince you of something you already know and believe in isn't that hard. but maybe this is why the fatui don't hide their motives, at least Arlechino. she was really straightforward with Furina & us. but we haven't experienced the persuasion yet, so I'm really looking forward to any more info on this subject.
genshin has a ton of really fked up things going on in their world quests and, honestly, some of it is more engaging than the main story sometimes.

    • @roozeveltfox
      @roozeveltfox  11 месяцев назад +14

oh so an interesting thing about the gift - Cater tells it was straightforward for Julien, but not so much for the guards. He explicitly tells us he was taking a bit of a risk. So to me - and because Genshin has been working with a lot of "gray area" recently - the truth may sometimes be a bit obscured quite a bit. So I think you're right, it definitely relies on SOME crumb of truth, and also the person's "purity" (or maybe gullibility lmao). Which would make it harder in some scenarios, but imho doable. If that makes sense?
Regardless I think it would still be exceptionally useful ESPECIALLY in a case where truth is stranger than fiction, or simply a hard pill to swallow. but yeah it's just some fun speculation on my end! because it's true, we don't have any actual evidence of her using this. (there's like one piece of dialogue in that specific convo where Traveller/Paimon wonder if they've been affected by this magic before, although it's unclear if they meant this 'gift' specifically or something else.)

Hello Roozevelt :D, i am commenting because i wanted to point out another sus thing about Cater's quest that i didn't saw many people talking about , and what made me want to talk about it is the fact that you said that we didn't heard anything about the sibling in Fontaine yet
So there is the ending of the quest which if i am not wrong Cater is telling a story (i don't remember well the context but i remember the dialog) in which he said if i am not wrong that the main character of the story (which is probably him because of all the things similar with Carter, if Carter is Cater, that the character has) was once pulled by a fish that wasn't from the aquarium that the others were from, he was from a vast ocean without limits, and the fish asks the character if they know how to make the fish go to the ocean again, the character says that he can't and then the fish just disspears to never be seen again (sorry if my telling of the part is wrong and confusing), i believe that the fish might be the abyss twin or a descender, afterall, why did Cater had to say a lot of times that the fish was not from the aquarium that everyone was from and yes from a vast ocean???
Anither thing that i would love to point out is Lanoire and Cater's fairytales, which even thought i can't make anything out of them, i know that they might be important (also sidenote, but Lanoire's story says that in the Giant's garden there was a Prince, a Princess and a Royal Guard which is male if you see other languages, which they all might be, i dunno, maybe Aether, Lumine and Dain??? Stay with this food for thought :D)
Anyways, i believe that was everything i wanted to talk about ^^

@@anacalcada773 I actually think it's very reasonable to assume that the names Prince, Princess and Hero for the dogs have been *intentionally* chosen by the writers to parallel Aether, Lumine and a heroic third person, possibly Dainsleif. The fact that it says "Royal Guard" in the localization you play in is, imo, very telling and may not simply be a translation inaccuracy. So what I'm saying is, I think you did notice something a little more hidden that the writers still hoped the players would catch! 🤗

    Yaaay new theory vid!
This whole “neo-human” thing has been driving me insane just a little lol. Ever since finding out that abysslings aren’t made from some insane and smart Khaenri’ahn (as far as we’ve seen), it just added so many questions.
In relation to the abyss order, did all of the abysslings start off as neo-humans too? And how did they change? It couldn’t just be from eating Elynas’ flesh so there’s definitely another way, right?
In relation to Tartaglia....is he also a neo-human and if so how? Just what is his ancestry? From what we’re told in-game, his family is very normal so what about him is so different? A celestial whale decided to bond with a 14yr old boy....why him!?
What the hell are neo-humans???? Cuz it feels like so many people could qualify as one at this point.
Also a bit of a sidenote, why can Elynas’ flesh do...anything really? He was one of Rhinedottir’s creations, likely a failed experiment in the primordial human project......are neo-humans just humans/creatures who have an affinity to primordial powers? Are neo-humans just a secret sub-species?
    Khaenri’ahns = Humanoid Dragons??
    Mixed Khaenri’ahns = Human + Human + Dragon???
Neo Humans = Human + Primordial one??????
    It’s 2am I can’t think. But there’s something really weird going onnnnn 😭

This was a very nice video. Certainly excited to learn more about Arlecchino after learning about the world quest.
I do want to say one thing though, and that's your theories and speculations on who inflicted the "curse" on the Khaenri'ans. So my main reason on not fully supporting the speculations is because we do know that hilichurls existed even before Khaenri'ah became a thing (I forgot what flavour text(s) and/or dialogue(s) it was that basically confirmed this though). So whoever, or even whatever cause for such a "curse" to happen can't be specific to what happened in Khaenri'ah. I do think being skeptical that it was the work of Celestia is valid though, since we can't outright confirm what Dainsleif exactly means when he said "divine one" (especially since I've always theorized that The Abyss and Celestia are two sides of the same coin one can say, or how even the Sovereigns and Dragon King can be connected to "divine one"). If not connected to Celestia though, then it definitely has to stem from The Abyss as a whole and/or the era of the Dragon Sovereigns. Either way, such a "curse" has existed for a very long time and I feel holds some connection to the origins of Teyvat as a whole.

Kater reply something like this: "The time of things from under the age of nine is over. Next, we probably need the experiences from age sixteen or so"
That was first words that Cater heared in this body.
This imply that Cater was first experiment from "under age 9", but there was also experiment for 16 years old speciment. This means that Cater wasn't the last one.

I think it's implied that the purple sludge we can find in the institute (that looks like the things from the chasm) is what Carter turned into. His consciousness might still have been extracted and used to make Caterpillar but he wouldn't have turned into a Hilichurl.

    • @repulsedfrog
      @repulsedfrog 11 месяцев назад +1

if thats the case then perhaps he still links with the “curse”? in quotations because it may not have intended to be a curse. if people were able to turn into hilichurls, then maybe nzk wanted to recreate/use that power to transformation hilicater in the opposite direction. clearly didn’t work whatever happened and instead they ended up with his current form and abilities

    • @amouramarie
      @amouramarie 10 месяцев назад +1

Hmm, I think that makes sense, actually. If Carter had been made into a hilichurl, Rene would likely have just called him that in his notes, since hilichurls have existed for a long time.

I typed doing ass comment just for it to not show up🥲 but imma give you the short of it
    1. I think Hilichurls(the og ones) were created via the power of The Second Throne(Nibelung/whoever or whatever he brought back) and they use the actual people of teyvat in this process to use against the Heavens in war.
Also that it’s possible just coming into contact with the power could alter someone or a group(Ukko from dragonspine could be a good reference, as the Nail dropped on Sal vind to purify that area of the land as well, and the Princess’s future sight abilities could also be a byproduct of the Second thrones power) so in essence the area were the nails dropped are the pockets of which abyssal power seeped out.
    2. It’s possible that the Earliest Neohuman we encountered was in Diluc’s story quest, the abyss mage who was originally Landrich could’ve found the process to change into an abyssal being.
    3. Genshin needs to give us a story or event quest(preferably a world quest so they can do huge lore dumps and give out more information about it) centered around the basics of magic and science of teyvat seeing that such things are more important now than ever with us coming into contact with, literally a ritual for summoning abyssal monsters, questionable practices(khaenriahan or otherwise) and with use being half way through the story.

The Abyss should theoretically have gods or high power entities like Celestia, so maybe the Khaenri'ahs were cursed by each side, hence why it's 2 curses. They were trying to harness power from a unknown plane to fight the gods, but the assumption that that knowledge was free for the taking, might've ultimately been their fatal mistake. On a side note, i hope we get more into the whole Oratrice situation on the up coming AQ, that might give us some info on Egeria and maybe even make another Harbringer pop up (Dottore or Sandrone). Love your videos, your tinfoil hat wearing, crack smoking Oceanid gives me life.

Those exploring fontaine must have noticed a tower east of fontaine inaccessible as of 4.1 now, If Snezhnaya too has a tower somewhat like that, counting the 3 towers - fontaine one, snezhnaya one and mondstadt one(stormterror's tower), all three can possibly pinpoint towards celestia in centre, possibly a way to get into celestia after unlocking some kind of hidden mechanic still hidden in them, what do y'all think?

There are other parts to this as well. I don't think the "fairy tales" Cater told Linoire are really stories at all. He is trying to describe how he came to be. See Cater talks about compassion just before we leave Meropide and he is dying for someone to feel empathy for him and his fate. "The giant" in the story could simply refer to the Hillichurl's. Now this could of course just be a story but I don't think so the witch has a high chance of being Rhinedottir, Gold. There are a couple of reasons for this, Rhinedottir is busy reviving ancient species however we have not found out why we just know she left one of her more successful experiment in Mondstadt Albedo. Albedo work's very similar to how the Melusines work, his token is to find "The Truth of this world" and he wont stop until he succeeds he also paints strange just like one of the Melusine's. It would mean Rhinedottir was captured in something similar to Meropide thousands of years ago and there could be a twist to this story were the Hillichurls were the first civilization in Theyvat, nore the Dragons OR the humans have that claim. People getting cursed and turning into Hillichurls does not refute that because we know Oceanids are human made as well as pure beings of water.

Based on Fontaine Archon and World quests, it can be assumed Fontaine narrative is Genshin equivalent of Honkai main story chapters focusing on Seele, though mostly Salt Snow Holy City arc. The concept of forms and authority are the most essential in Honkai lore, and Fontaine world quests fits the categories. Duality is the constant theme of Hydro vision users, in which Hydro authority is the equivalent of the Herrscher authority of Death/Rebirth.
Rebirth was seen in several hydro elementals, as oceanids are able to rebirth into different forms while retaining their consciousness. Neuvillette is the hydro dragon reborn, though due to the experiments of the vishaps that render them impure, it resulted in the former reborn in human form, as a different incarnation and abilities restrained. The Ordo world quests and notes hinted of transferring consciousness into new bodies, which is similar to the Herrscher authority of Death/Rebirth, but artificial and potential failure rate.
The Herrscher of Death/Rebirth is capable of destruction and creation, though it can't revive a person completely, only creating bodies for the soul to inhibit. Seele got lucky due to the properties of the bubble universe retaining the souls of the dead, she's able to use her authority to revive everyone by creating new bodies.

I’ve been saying this for awhile. Celestia smiting down Khaneriahns with a curse doesn’t make a lot of sense especially considering the timeline. If Celestia had that kind of power and also didn’t like Khaneriah for not having a god why did they only curse them AFTER the cataclysm. Heavenly Principles seemingly let them build an entire civilization without a god AND let them fuck with the abyss plenty to build up their technology. it’s only AFTER the cataclysm do they get this “curse”. I find it weird that Heavenly Principles doesn’t do anything to Khaneriah for all this time messing with Abyssal powers when they directly oppose Abyssal corruption. The closest thing to combating Celestia is abyssal powers so Celestia ignoring Khaneriah only AFTER them messing with Abyss blows up in their face and risks corrupting the land is not only weird it just doesn’t make any sense.
If the Curse of the Wild or at least how it’s afflicted on Khaneriahns specifically is of Khaneriahn origin and it was used to perhaps to try and save Khaneriah people from the devastation of the Abyss on their kingdom. Rene’s plan would almost directly allusion to that. Destroying the humanity of their people so they could survive in the apocalypse.

Thinking about the accidental curse theory, perhaps narcissenkruez and Rene could serve as a hint or a one to one of what happened in khaenriah, I don’t think it will be, but it would be interesting if that’s what it was hinting at the whole time
