It's so easily done, especially with so many connections if you're used to doing black to the back. Reminds me to build a lever frame and go wire in tube hehe...

Regarding the wiring issue, I did something similar. I saw my mistake and thought “I will remember that!” I didn’t! And yes, it was the last section that I checked before I found the issue. Lesson learned. We all do it Charlie, don’t feel bad.

Well, I am a chump Charlie, living overseas (80 kilometres South of Barcelona) I finally had the opportunity to come to the UK, the first time since February 2020. My son has recently moved from London to Devon and to get to him, I had to go to Totnes, twice!. So beforehand, I thought I must have a good look at the signal box especially as I am modelling an invented GWR of the fifties (nationalization has not as yet taken place).Guess what? It completely slipped my mind!! The joys of being old. Oh well, at least I saw my grandson. Thanks Charlie, your videos are an inspiration.

Hi Charlie. Hope you’re keeping well 😀 That Bakewell tart looks very yummy 😋 As I was born in 57 so my recollection of main line steam is limited 😫 Even though I do like steam and travel on the railway touring company’s days out when possible with my wife now lol 😆 I’m a midland man but always had a passion for western diesels in the 70s when train spotting 😃 So your absolutely fantastic Chadwick model railway is right up my street and brings many happy memories of the GWR in BR days. Like all nighters on Bristol station with holiday specials coming from all over the country putting extra coaches on or pulling off the buffet car 👍🏻 Thanks as always for a fantastic update. Stevie.

Hi Charlie. I ran up against the same 'fun' short circuit problem for a very similar reason. I solved it by incorporating a DCC autoreverser module (Available from Block Signalling and other manufacturers) into the nest of wires under the board . More costly of course than a simple red to black wire splice, but effective.

Charlie, I wish to draw your attention to the Bakewell Tart that you received . That item looks to me to be a Bakewell PUDDING! Even though it came from the Bakewell Tart shop.
Bakewell tarts can be made anywhere in the country whereas Bakewell Puddings can only be made in Bakewell. The Bakewell Pudding is completely different to a Bakewell Tart. Just looking at it you will see there is no Fondant topping to it.The best way to eat a Bakewell Pudding is warmed for a few minutes in the oven.

Also, be careful with beep testers. A lot of people use a 9-volt battery. In a DCC system, it probably won't cause too many issues. However, if you have five volt electronics, you can sometimes damage them by over voltage. If you make one, a couple of AAs is a much safer bet.

Hi Charlie, nice to see lots of progress being made.
Just one small point, with regard to the "error" with the colour of the wires... Rather than introduce another potential high resistance connection with that chock block, perhaps a different way of tackling if the same situation crops up in the future would be to slip some correctly coloured head shrink tube or a sleeve over the wires instead?
    All the best,
    Jon M.

That was a long drive to Shepton Mallet to get a Bakewell Tart. You must have thought it was something from Hattons! Paul Lunn suggests a method in Plan 19 of the Peco Setrack Plans Book. He proposes that only a part of the station is depicted. In this way the layout can have the flavour of a main line without full-length trains. Thanks for uploading.

Great stuff. had a brainwave....the thing missing from your layout which might help hide the helix rods is.......Japanese Knotweed, as used (?) by British Rail to stabilise embankments. Much more resilient than adding trees or ivy and creeps everywhere, I've read. Not sure if you can get a miniature species, but if you can create one, you might be onto a good product!

Most cameras have issues with LED lighting, even some florescent lighting. yes the 25 frame rate does not help this, but it is more a function of the electrical grid and how the manufacture steps 220 VAC down to 3, 5, or 12 VDC. You could string enough LEDs in series for them not to release the blue smoke at 220V, but instead of the method of voltage regulation causing flickering, the AC voltage will cause flickering.

It's funny, took a train trip from Dallas to Longview on AmTrak. It was on a train that runs from Memphis to Abilene, five cars in total. The siding at Longview is not long enough that short bit of train, so they actually have to stop twice to get everyone off. There's that pesky "P" word for you.
Was watching a railfan video the other day on Distributed Power, and had a thought for future railway modelers. The rain shown was 11,250 foot long. How anyone will ever be able to model that boggles my mind. Mind, to make the lash-up they pulled off three separate sidings to assemble the consist. So, maybe the 'future' is in idealized depictions for rail traffic.

Charlie, love the video. I have wired up a one track feeder the same way to my buss wires too. I think we have all done it at some point. I was using those ACCU-LITES VAMPIRE II - DCC BUSS Connection boards to speed along wiring up my feeders. I guess I got distracted and reversed it at the Accu-Lite. Lucky me!
I noticed a few comments on the red and black feeders. For the more visually minded, rather than trying to think through it, take one of your less valuable coaches or a freight put a strip of black tape down one side and a strip of red tape down the other side. As you wire up your layout push that car along to remind which wire goes where. If you push through a return loop and find your colors are now reversed, then you need an AR1 or something in that reverse loop. Really simple.

I am guesssing I interrupted what I was doing for a trip to the local pub and when I got back I was reversed! Hi Charlie,
A further tip regarding centrally positioning point blades when ballasting. Once glue has been dripped onto ballast and before it dries get a Qtip and gently hold downwards onto sleeper and gently hold again inside of the point blade. Do this for all moveable areas. This will soak up any glue under the blade and sleeper. You may need two q tips. Sometimes I might use a bit of kitchen towel.

Great video, Charlie. One chunk of trivia about King George V, was that it was lent by BR to HP Bulmer the cider makers in Hereford and was restored by them. I spent many a summer holiday staying with my grandmother several streets away from Bulmers and getting in to the depot when it was open. The pullman coaches were named after the wives of Bulmers' directors. All sadly ancient history, but I did find one of Bulmers' working yard diesels from the time called "Pectin" at a preserved line (but my memory fails me on which).

Some great railway modelling going on Charlie, a lot of really helpful tips and advice as usual. I decided to reduce my train lengths to 5 carriages (but then my layout is only currently 8' x 5' and it's Hornby Dublo 3-Rail of course), mainly to reduce the load and minimize wear and tear as much as possible. I really like the helix idea and having a fiddle yard set below, it makes use of the available space and means there's more places for scenery, buildings and the like.

I'm a '58er too. But despite missing the heyday of steam, or perhaps because I did, I love the steam era. The sounds and visible mechanicals are a great draw.
It's getting harder to get steam locos and 40s era rolling stock, but then most of today's population grew up with post 80s trains.
The layout looks great. It's quite a bigger one. Lots of opportunities. Cheers Charlie!

I would like to send to you some cream and jam lamingtons that we have here in Australia but with the cost of getting there to the UK and the time it would have taken to get to you the cream would have went off and the cake would gone stale , so I et them !! ,, and they were bloody delicious too , hahaha
Anyhoo keep the good work and gr8 videos up.

As usual, a great mix of content, and interesting to see how you coped with the red to the front issue. I loved your idea of having longer "scenic" trains that don't stop at te station, and shorter ones which do. I'll certainly be doing that, as I'm currently in the middle of building my underground storage area!

Another great video Charlie. You really do make them intersting to watch and you're never frightened of highlighting some of your "errors". Luckily for me I was born in 1951 and enjoyed many years of steam so it was nice to see that you invested in a King class engine. Maybe you could add another few preseved examples that were running at the time. I'm sure the bakewell tart didn't last long!!

Many thanks for your great videos Charlie. One thing I don't understand is why you need a second helix, if (as you say) continuous running can be achieved by 2 reversing loops (top and bottom). I understand you don't want to always see trains immediately re-appearing, but a few holding loops and some automation would sort that out for you.

Love your work Charlie, retired Navy Greenie here too (RAN). You mentioned in this vid that you couldn't quite remember the steam era, being 5 years older than your good self I do recall, as a young lad of 4/5 years of age, my grandmother telling me not to stick my head out of the carriage window because I would get soot in my eyes. So, quick as a flash, I stuck my head out of the window, just to look about, and promptly got soot in my eyes didn't I. One of life's early lessons I think. 😁

Top stuff Charlie. Good to se that I am not the only one that manages to wire things the wrong way round no matter how careful I am and how many times I offer things up to check them first 🤣 Good old chocolate blocks are a god send 😇 I like the idea of a temporary solution to give you the flexibility to still play while doing major construction. On my old garden railway I remember I did a similar thing by inserting a simple temporary long thin twin track plank section until I had finalised and finished the station boards so I didn’t get bogged down too much! 👍
As for the station, I agree you should avoid making it too big as otherwise it dominates the scene and you risk the layout looking like a station with some track either side rather than a proper railway 😜
BTW, what a result, getting a pie through the post! 🥧 Did the wife get any in the end? 🤔
Cheers mate, the camera works a treat and I look forward to the first video when you can do a full test circuit 🤓🍀🍻👍

Charlie, you should look up TRS trains, who can DCC sound fit King George V with a water based smoke systems (no horrid oil residues) and lighting. Their work is honestly amazing and worth looking into to make the only steamer a centrepiece of your railway!

Morning Charlie just catching up with you contents just watching this one. I think 6 coaches is enough in my opinion has going out and about back in the 90s to 2000s hst round my way they always had 8 coaches witch I was going to do on my layout but just wouldn't look right and would not fit in 6ft Station so I decided 6coaches would be enough.
