What I envision a virtual work meeting at D2L (Brightspace) to be like (jk, obv)

- Todd meets with his supervisor at D2L (Brightspace) to discuss priorities going forward.
(I'll get back to stats videos soon. This one's mainly for fun, but inspired by a decade of frustration. In case it's not obvious, I play both parts.)
D2L (Brightspace) quizzes do not allow an instructor to change the answer to a numeric response (arithmetic) question and regrade quiz attempts. There's a related problem on multiple-select questions. This has cost me personally at least a hundred hours over the last decade. Any fix is ad-hoc and time consuming, and leads to confusing feedback for students, inferior learning outcomes, and wasted time for instructors that could be used to do something productive.
There are only so many possible explanations as to why D2L has not implemented this “feature”, despite pleas from instructors over the years. This video represents one possible explanation.
You were my prof almost 7 years ago and you still hold the title of "best instructor I've had" whenever that topic ever comes up in conversation. That is the mark you have made on the world with the effort you've put into innovative teaching methods. Glad to see your sense of humour has not dampened over the years 😆 Keep up the great work Jeremy!
Side note, almost didn't recognize you in the supervillain facial hair choice, but that voice is inimitable!
Thanks so much for the very kind words Vikram! That's very nice to hear. Every so often I go with the supervillain look for a bit :)
I hope u to continue uploading stats videos
It's simply top notch and i would be sad if u wouldn't continue
Hope the best for you❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for the kind words! I'll get back to it soon!
Not only you're an excellent teacher you have an incredible voice and you should do voice acting 😊
Thanks! Maybe in retirement :)
You're a fucking gem, 10/10 content
im taking A Level Statistics and Probability 1 and 2 and my exam is in a few weeks. i cannot stress enough how much your videos have helped. tysm.
I'm glad to have been of help! All the best on your exams!
thank you very much for the statistcs videos, you made me pass and even consider statistics lol
Wish my teacher could have been like you, she couldnt even do meaningless probability examples, it was deplorable you would think it was just that, like just this problem she cant be this bad right?, but no she even teaches another subjects like lineal algebra and it was much worse, she got the wrong formula and then most of my classmates got it wrong and they needed it to show that she wrote the wrong formula and the classmates were usually the ones solving problems so one said, just let him be the teacher already? her face changed in a second lol
face reveal! I love you!
Thanks!
I write a fair amount of "formula based" arithmetic quiz questions in D2L for some electronics classes I teach at a local community college. Just curious, how do you implement various inverse CDF's in D2L?
That's been another pain since ditching Mobius (massive increase in licensing fees for us). My only workaround has been (very carefully) coding a good standard normal approximation (both CDF and its inverse), and basing questions off that. You can do quite a bit with that, of course,
For other distributions I've just worked around it. e.g. asking for the margin of error based on the t distribution, with only a few different confidence levels and sample sizes. Maybe randomize a standard error so that they're all different. And just ask different types of questions (e.g. The shaded area in which one of the following plots represents the appropriate probability?) It's definitely a pain relative to having the functions available in Mobius, but having a standard normal approximation gets some of the way there.
Sounds like you two are not hyper-aligned. You'll need to circle back on those action items.
King👑
Thanks!
Do you plan to continue making tutorials? I hope so.
Stats tutorials were just part of my grand plan to pivot to comedy. Or maybe pranks. But in all seriousness I do plan on getting back to stats video production, but it'll likely have to wait until the summer. I'm doing a lot of rewriting of my notes, and have plans for many supporting videos. Right now, with my courses, writing, and general work duties I doubt I'll have time to put time into video production until the summer.
@@jbstatistics glad to hear it! You had me worried
Finally I'm looking at my favourite professor 🌼🍫.
Thank you thank you thank you.
Brightspace? Convenient??? DoN'T bE riDIcUlous
You videos are so helpful! Could you consider making a playlist on MLR?
Good morning sir. I have a question about "uncertainty in measurements". Is there by any chance you could show us sir, how the general formula for uncertainty (both for independent & correlated variables) was derived? I don't understand quite well the formula for calculating measurement of uncertainty and how it came to be? 😥
Can you explain why we take out 1 over n squared when proofing for the standard error of sampling distribution? Thanks!
i'm in ur brothers (peters) probability and stats class haha, love ur vids!
Excellent channel, btw! Great content with excellent explanations.
The king of stats 🔥
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Nice
Thanks for a good laugh!
:))
As a student I'm shocked how bad D2L's site is. Keep fighting the good fight
There are some curious things, to be sure. Maybe, just maybe, we can get some of them fixed.
LMAOOO
What a comeback! Happy to see you again.
Thanks! I'll try to get back to stats content soon :)
That must have taken some serious planning! Todd does indeed have a point
On a related note, have you tried MyOpenMath?
@@credsell Cameron! I hope all is well.
It did take a little planning, but the hardest part was growing the beard in a couple of days. No, I haven't looked all that much into other possibilities. Just glided back to our Courselink quizzes when Maple jacked our license fee for Mobius by *a lot*. Like, a lot a lot. Some started to offload that cost to students, but we in M&S said nah. I'll take a look at MyOpenMath.
Todd looks like he knows his stuff. I'm surprised he doesn't just fix it on his own, in an afternoon or something.
@@jbstatistics open source/free and developed by a Math prof who really knows his stuff. I just helped our college navigate the legalese etc to deploy it college wide. Would love to show off what it can do to more people!
