      What was the OAT on the 1st dyno run compared to the second? I ask since OAT must be taken into account. For example, if it were two degrees cooler on the day of the 2nd dyno run that alone could explain a slight HP increase. However, if it was warmer, and there was still an increase in HP it would be more meaningful.
      As far as a tune it's not difficult to get a little more HP, even if starting from bone stock, since factory tunes are fairly conservative as they must meet EPA clean air standards.
      Not trying to spoil the party, it's just science. And regardless of what you do with the Colorado, the ZR1 won't have anything to worry about. ;)
      Btw: I like watching others work on vehicles. It's much easier than doing it myself. ;)

      In reality a cold air intake doesn't really make much of a difference unless there's a tune to go with it. In this case there are other reasons to do it, though. Reusability, engine sound, improved gas mileage, etc.

    Hello again HPO!! Great video and you have no idea how much I appreciate you taking the time and expense to get the proof! Now I’d like to give my $.02 worth. I’m not sure how much that kit cost, but being made out of what looks like sheet metal, has a disadvantage over plastic of holding heat, and to a small extent weight. Also without a smooth intake tube after the sensor mount tube is just wrong, especially it priced higher than kit, like K&N, that offer the kits both ways, metal and plastic, with an without tubes! The I also noticed where the box meets up to the inner fender, there’s a lot of extra metal in the fender liner/frame design, that leaves the hole smaller than the wide open air box where it mounts up to on the inner fender! I know it would not be easy, but cutting away that extra metal, to make that hole as large as the open side of the air box I’m sure would help! Just look at the original air box, you can see what I mean looking at the snorkel that fits into the same size hole! That restricts the aftermarket air box, effectively as much as the stock air box! I’d love to see a dyno run after that hole get enlarged! Plus a comparison between the major aftermarket CAI’s. I remember seeing one 5 years ago, where that was done on a 2015 Charger R/T, where 6 different kits were compared. The best was the plastic type K&N, at $325 at the time. The worst was from a brand I cannot remember, but there was no tube after the sensor! The most expensive gave the most peak hp, that was actually a fancy MOPAR CAI Kit, with aluminum tubes, plastic molded box and big blue conical air filter. But the power increase was less at 4-5 thousand than the K&N, that had more tq at lower rpm! But I know every vehicle is different!

    • @HorsePowerObsessed
      @HorsePowerObsessed  3 года назад +2

      I appreciate that, Kevin. Thank you for weighing in. While you're not wrong I really liked this unit for a few different reasons but most notably it's look, the sound, and the fact that the filter is reusable. Is it perfect? Absolutely not but it's good enough that GM chose it for it's performance parts division so it must be doing more right than wrong.

    Do yourself a favor. Try the K&N cold system part number 77-3104KP. If you are truly "HP Obsessed" you will be impressed. HP power can make more noise as it breathes better ( or capable of breathing better), as you have already seen. The cover being on the engine is 100% cosmetic. If ya like the look that's fine. But I have never noticed it with the hood closed, and that is how most vehicles are operated. Then add an exhaust ( I like the Borla) as it is completely 304 stainless - not just the tip- like the O.E. so it will last a long time. The engine can't draw more air if it can not get out what it has sucked in. And exhaust is designed to help scavenge the charge out of the cylinders which helps to fill the cylinders. Adding two slicks to a rear drive vehicle can give you a bit more traction , but when you add sure/grip, what a difference! I've seen dyno recording 20 more HP at the ground in these v-6's. the two or so you got???

    Little known fact, I used to build and sell custom CAIs on Amazon with all 5-star reviews. One thing to consider is that metal intakes start colder but once heat soaked often go from adding to subtracting power.
    You might also compare to simply changing the stock filter element with a free flowing K&N. That stock intake looks very well designed.
    Also, intake gains are usually measured at the point of max difference under the two dyno curves, not at peak.
    Lastly, I use oiled filters too, but they have their skeptics who say more flow means less filtering.
    Both of those options look great.

    People your stock air box is a cold air intake from the factory on your Colorado’s. Taking the factory box out and replacing it with a aluminum box that’s a heat sink will bring your temps up. Both boxes breath through the same hole in the fender, just replace your air filter with a K&N or similar washable they flow way more air that’s where there getting there HP# from. A stock replacement filter from K&N has more surface Area And more flow than their filter just don’t over oil filter As It’s not good for the mass airflow sensor.

    Lets see the graft in its entirety. Peak numbers don't mean squat! The peak torque increase alone made it worth it. However, did you improve the torque curve throughout the mid range where you cruise? It may have given you 6 ft/lbs "peak" torque, but did it open up 10-15 ft/lbs in the areas that you drive in the most where you really need it? Also, what did it do you your AFR? Are you too leaned out, or did the ECU compensate for the increased air flow? There is so much useful information missing here.

  • @bryan7821

    Hey Justin,,,,,the K&N C.A.I is a lot louder than the one you just installed. The K&N has long plastic tube, and i think that`s what makes it so loud.
    If im not mistaken Justin, the one you just installed is almost identical to the one from GM,,,,BUT,,,,,
    The BIG COVER thats on top of your engine,,,,,its actually part of your air intake system, and thats a really bad design by GM
    There`s a small air port that`s made into that cover, just underneath,,,,and i think that`s the part that actually limits the amount of air that feeds into your air intake on the manifold.
    It took me a long time to figure that out when i installed the K&N on my 2015.
    Im willing to bet,,,,that the K&N Cold Air Intake provides a lot more horsepower than the one you have, because it completely eliminates that big cover, and one big tube goes in its place.
    If you remove that cover and look under it you can see what i mean.
    Also,,,,with the K&N system installed, that engine will actually backfire through the air intake when you shut the motor off almost every time.
    It`s a very faint backfire sound.
    That another reason why i took my K&N back off.

    • @HorsePowerObsessed
      @HorsePowerObsessed  4 года назад +2

      That's one of the reasons I didn't want an intake with the tube because I've heard of some issues with replacing the whole thing. I wouldn't want it much louder than this one and I definitely don't want any backfiring. This is the same unit as the GM one, cold air inductions actually makes it for GM.

    • @bryan7821
      @bryan7821 4 года назад

      @@HorsePowerObsessed I`ve seen the GM Cold Air Intakes in RUclips thats how i know, and the full sized trucks look basically the same.
      Also,,, our PCV valve tubes are connected to the big cover as well, and thats the bad thing about Direct injection Engines.
      That`s why i installed a Moroso Catch Can, to keep it from dumping oil in through the intake port.
      So far, its caught maybe 10 to 15 drops of oil, but over time that can add up, and cake the valves.
      They dont seem to dump oil unless your turning really high RPM`s
      Just about every auto maker is using Direct Port Injection Engines now, except for the new Ford 7.3 Tremor, and maybe the 5.0 Coyote
