Google Pixel Tablet Review: Does It Make Any Sense?

  • The Pixel Tablet is the first of its kind, merging a Google Home Hub to a tablet in a combination that might seem pretty intuitive. A Google Home Hub is basically just a tablet with a speaker attached, why not just merge the two? But in practice, this combination is not quite as practical as I expected. Check out the video, and let me know your thoughts below.

You should talk about the features/benefits and forget the histrionics.

Excellent review and I agree 100% with your thoughts. I haven't picked one up yet, as I don't NEED one, but I'm considering it. I'm debating between the Pixel tablet or the mostly stock android Onn 11" tablet pro from Walmart because it's much cheaper. ($399 on sale vs $159). Like you, I want the productivity features of a laptop with the option to add or remove a keyboard to make it a tablet, but I haven't found the "just right" device to do that yet. I suspect the Pixel tablet won't see a real second iteration and they'll let this die on the vine like so many other Google products of the past. (I did have the Nexus 7 tablet and liked it, but that was forever ago.) Hmm. . .what to do?!?

Your complaint about it not having an OLED display is rather contradictory to using it as your alarm clock. As such use could lead to screen burn in if it had OLED. I personally just don't see using it as my alarm clock. I can just buy a $20 dumb digital alarm clock and be done with it. I do like being able to read the temperature whenever I want to on my dumb alarm clock.

Modern OLEDs don't have issues with burn in, largely because software can shift the pixels used for the clock. That's why basically every smartphone uses them now.

@@innoiso Burn in is still an issue with OLED. There are reports of iPhone 15 with burn in already. Furthermore, oled pixels can die over time as it degrade due to heavy usage. It is the nature of the technology. Here is an example of the issue: ruclips.net/video/QPojjvXmYfM/видео.html. This is why LCD makes more sense for the Pixel tablet especially when the screen is always on when docked.

That video is about him using an OLED TV as a monitor for Windows. Windows doesn't have nearly the same amount of focus in preserving OLEDs by changing pixels. I'm sure a select few people have problems with burn in on their iPhones. But if it was a major issue, Apple wouldn't have switched their entire line over to OLED years ago.

@@innoiso Still doesn't make sense when it is EXPECTED for the tablet to be used as an constant ON smart display when not used and ON the dock. The screen literally doesn't turn off. Your phone screen probably would wear a lot easier if you ran it 24/7 for 1-2 years on just a clock screen causing burn in. Look up the Nintendo switch burn in experiment by RUclipsr WulffDen where someone has Zelda running for 2 years. In the first year he saw noticeable ghosting of static elements and after 2 years it was very easy to see the burn in after 3600 hours, which is not far off the scope of this device and what is expected of it. It is expected to be used for tens of thousands of hours of screen on use. An IPS display would hardly be worn down while an OLED would see significant damage especially if it was used as a clock or a digital photo album.

@@innoisoNothing particular. Just can't buy everything that looks fun, it needs to be justified somehow. And pixels are not as big here in EU as they are in US I think.

0:29 "Please don't… stop buying MacBooks."
Dude, what? MacBooks are the most powerful laptops available. I built a powerful gaming Windows desktop and bought an M1 MacBook Pro, and the MacBook runs circles around the desktop when I'm compiling code. Windows laptops are even worse than desktops in this regard because of their worse CPUs and cooling capabilities. And then you have all the Unix advantages of MacOS. I could continue, but hey, 90 % of my Android app developer colleagues use MacBooks, so I think the numbers speak for themselves.
Don't recommend people to stop buying some products when you have no idea how they utilize them. There isn't any better and faster machine for software development than a MacBook, period.

I was parodying Apple. Saying "Please don't stop buying MacBooks" since the iPad is supposed to be able to replace Windows PCs, but Apple has avoided telling people to replace MacBooks with iPads.
Dude, chill out. At no point did I say MacBooks are worthless.
