FYI when you’re boiling your water on the picnic table, do not sit in front of the pot because if you accidentally bumped the pot, it can spill and you can have boiling water all over yourself. Be very careful it happened quite a few times too many hikers. Loving your video and your narration.
"I already got trail magic. This lady offered to watch my backpack for me." Love this!!!! Not many people consider "Trail Magic" to be something so simple. Your outlook on life will take your feet far. Subbed
That was one of the most entertaining AT videos I’ve seen. Your sense of humor made us laugh through the entire video. Having a vehicle arrive in the middle of the night and shine lights on your tent when you are alone is absolutely horrifying. Glad everything turned out ok.
Sunny!! Congrats on your first day! It's been a while since I found anyone I wanted to follow on their AT journey. I'm hooked on you after less than ten minutes! You will make it all the way and I look forward to virtually tagging along. My favorite line: He brought his truck so it would be easy to hose the blood off. I'm a CSI and that made me laugh out loud.
I was at my limit of how many hikers I can keep up with and I said, “no more “! Then I came across Sunny. As soon as I saw, she was going to stay in a cemetery…ALONE…I subscribed, lol! Sunny you’re awesome! :-) I’m glad you’re going to follow the no camping near roads advice and use your stove on the ground:-) I would’ve been absolutely terrified when that truck pulled up. Truthfully, unless there was no other place to park and run their engine, I feel the Army Rangers should’ve known better than to park that close to a tent. How could they not know it would scare someone? However… My gratitude for your safety far outweighs my ruffled feathers over their lack of consideration. Keep shining Sunny ☀️ prayers for a safe and joyous hike! You will be the Sunshine on Mount Katahdin!!!
Such an authentic video and made me laugh many times :) Well done and thank you, Sunny. I still feel afraid in the tent on occasion and can relate to everything you said. Maybe see you later on down the trail....I start the AT soon myself :)
Ive been eliminating youtube channels, i really love that you dont put music over everything, thank you!!! I just found your channel and im very thankful, i think you will be a very fun watch for the next few months. Thank you for taking the time to put these videos together, we appreciate it. Be safe, be careful and have fun.. Oh yeah, that was awesome of you to sleep in a cemetery alone . Not to many people would do that.
Omg YAHOOOOO...you are definitely entertaining on so many levels...but yet why am I so worried lol...but any girl that lives where you do has to be tough...God please watch over this beautiful soul ..that's the first time I asked God for anything.. Hahaha
OMG you are literally mezmerizing!!! I think I'm in love?!?! Lol. You're truly learning on the fly darlin, please dont get discouraged, your positivity will help you immensely. Have a safe and fun journey, each mistake becomes experience-you got this Sunny!!!!!!!
Subbed. I followed Beer in Beautiful Places last years who dumped water on her thigh from a tipped over stove. Got 2nd and 3rd degree burns out of it but still finished the trail. I must say your cheerfulness and sense of wonder is what will get you through all the days that will feel awful. You got this!
I’ve been watching thru hiker videos for about 5 years. So glad I came across you on Day 1. I love your historical content, please keep that coming! You just got a new subscriber! All the best to you on your journey!
Some 50 years ago, while backpacking with some friends, I was camped at that same cemetary when a group of Rangers walked through the woods not 20’ from my tent. They had to be carrying 60 or 70 pounds of stuff in huge packs. They were dropped off by helicopter mile’s away and had to navigate in the dark to sevaral different locations by daylight. Long Creek Falls is one of my favorite day hikes. My wife and I subbed, so we will keep up with you. Cheering you on!
Well, that's an eventful first day! I was legit scared for you! Starting April 3rd...I will not be sleeping at the cemetery but may stop and take a spin on the seesaw! Good luck...rooting for you.
Hello from Anchorage! I love this time of year when everyone shares their AT journey. Your sense of humor has made this one of the best “first day” videos so far. Be sure to get some good southern BBQ and eat all the things you can’t get in Alaska. What about “Red Riding Hood” for a trail name? Be safe and enjoy the journey!
You’re the first thruhiker I’ve seen camp at the graveyard since watching several others early January. Funny, suspenseful, storytelling. Camera angle of you on child’s toy ride kept me thinking, “what’s next”? Thanks for your video, Safe Hiking.
Tuesday, March 12th: Mindy / Sunny; Day 01. Tradition touching first blaze Springer Mountain. Stover Creek Shelter. First water crossing. Long Creek Falls. First AT night in a cemetery. You got this! Good luck! Happy Trails! Ross08
I just subscribed. Loved your video. You looked like a little kid on the playground equipment. It was funny but cute. OMG a truck pulled up like WT? , right. Glad you got a good sleep. Forever onward young lady!👍🥾
Thank goodness I found your channel. She (Sunny) prays for peaceful sleep, wakes up in terror, only to discover men in uniform arriving to find rest themselves. Realizes she will sleep just fine, and still has the sense to hope these men have women with them. 🤠😂😎 This totally makes my day.
I'm dying. this is great. never heard penitentiary mountain but one can imagine some sort of religious meaning or assemblage. I've visited a few old growth forest and they're few and far in between but interesting. Watching you light that stove, you really are doing things for the first time. Playing on the whatever that thing's called w/no voice over good stuff.
Congratulations on getting started on a great adventure. Take it easy to start. The first 300 miles will get you in shape. I like your hat. It looks practical expect that you will hit your head on branches because of it. I hope that you have treated all of your outer clothing and gear with Permethrin. There are 9 tick diseases on the AT and many hikers get tick sick. Almost 7 years ago my wife died from a tick bite. Please be careful. You will learn your gear as you go. That is the Mountain Phase of Ranger School(12 weeks of heck). Every day you will get stronger and braver. Happy Trails. Good Luck, Rick
You have officially become my favorite for this season of thru-hikers. Badbat was my favorite last year. I think you are going to be just as amazing as her. Can't wait to follow in your journey ❤
I LOVE your sense of humor - and your ability to laugh at yourself (facial expressions alone are worth the watch!) - wishing you success and fun - this will be an adventure!
So happy I found your channel. Like the history and your sense of humor. As for prettiest parts of the trail, you haven’t seen anything yet. I have a feeling you’ll be saying that over and over again. I’m rooting for you. Safe travels. 🙏
i just discovered you and are too funny. Sorry...not sure if you were really scared, but girl you had me rolling. Happy that you're safe and was able to sleep like a baby. I can't wait to watch your adventure unfold. You're very comical. 😀
I camped at that graveyard, actually under the shelter! It was a wet and windy night. I flipped the tables to create a windbreak. I had camped at Springer the night before, coming in via the approach. Only made it 6 miles on day 2 due the really bad weather. I would suggest avoiding camping at any kind of road crossing, especially if solo. I had two bad experiences on my hike - both times because I was too close to a road.
Whoa! What an epic first day. You had me crying laughing…but mostly b/c I would’ve been exactly like you!!! Way to kill it! Subbed and looking forward to your adventure!❤🎉
good luck i had my hip replaced about 15 tears ago dont stop me im headed out myself soon again been backpacking most of my younger years but did long trail hike this time well not sure yet pack is packed
Good job on your first day! I loved your video and your sense of humor, no one does everything perfect, so you might as well laugh about it. Yay Army Rangers! Too bad that they can’t hike with you for awhile!
Great video. If you don't want to bother with hanging your food, get an Ursack. It offers protection for your food, the bears and your nerves, as you don't wan't to argue over food with bears every second night.
Mama Bear and Little Bear per most recent vid will be coming onto the trail soon! Maybe just maybe! They will catch up to you! If i recall 2021? Taylor the Nawhamsha hiker met a few hikers that were behind her! Most importantly enjoy your hike! I am rooting for your completion of trail! Mt.Katahdin!! Be and Stay in Good Spirits!
Appreciate the maps....pretty weird w/the Army showing up...sometimes you get precisely what you pray for. We're going to have to work on your bear hang game...
❤❤ only one question: where did you learn so much of the history!!? I’d love book recommendations! When you’re off-trail of course. Stay strong and stay ☀️ sunny!
Hi Kristy! I will have to compile a list of books I read and add it to the description soon. But lots and lots of books, the internet, apps, maps, all the things :) I hope I always give accurate info!
Will be following along! That truck so close to your tent in the middle of the night would have had be scared shitless! I hope you carry a lil something something to protect yourself. I’m sure the bear spray could be of use.
As a safety measure I would never stay overnight where someone could drive up to. That’s considerably more dangerous than staying where someone has to put effort in to get to you… Thankful the soldiers showed up.
Im following Wandering with Wilson she's ahead of you! Molly Rose Outdoors and Wild Flower Adventures a mother and daughter Mama Bear and Little Bear as far as i know they haven't started and will be behind you! You have this and maybe youll meet them all at some point! 🙂

Oops! Thank you :)
@@SunnyHikes you’re very welcome. Have a great time on the trail. Look forward to more videos.
Yep, I witnessed the young lady named ranger last year. Did that exact same thing it was horrid
@@doubletimericepats oh, that’s terrible. 😢

You must have some powerful connections. You pray to be brave and have two platoons show up. I’m subscribed 😁
You are hilarious can't wait for video number 2. Keep at it.
I like your historical facts while you walk. That kind of stuff interests me. I’m going to keep watching your hike.
Yes! It was AWSOME!

You are super brave. No way I’d ever stay close to a road anywhere in north Georgia like that alone. And I’m a male and live a few minutes from there…
I Really enjoyed watching, and even my heart starting pounding when that truck pulled up. Keep it up, you’re doing great.
Yay Mindy! Happy to see you've started! Rooting for you from Barrow :)
Thank you!!!
I so enjoyed this video, will look for more! You're doing great! Best wishes and God bless from someone who lives in GA.
Great sense of humor 😂😂… my new favorite AT content creator
Thanks so much!
I love the history lessons you are teaching us. Safe travels.
Just finished watching. You are hilarious. So happy to see that you are doing well and going strong. Yayy to completing day 1.

Well Sunny, have way to much fun on your big adventure, I will be following you 🙏

I’m definitely watching for the history info. Love that.
Excellent start! First night in the cometary was so funny. Love your humor and transparency. Will follow along. Best wishes!

Thanks for your video, Safe Hiking.
In the past several years of watching thru hikers, I can’t recall seeing another camp there. I love her fearlessness!!
I’m sitting in an MRI waiting room with your Aunt Cathy, and people are looking at me because I am snort laughing. 😆 You’re so funny!!
Aww, how is Aunt Cathy?
She has good days and bad days. Trying to figure out what’s going on with her. :(
Amazing. Huge congratulations for getting out there. You will be a hiking-ninja in no time. Good luck from England

I’ve struggled to find an AT channel to watch this year. Glad I found yours! Now I have something to look forward to!

Thanks for your good advise as I plan to solo next year. I’m very nervous for it. Also what a great idea of turning the picnic table.
Such great advice!
Love your channel! I’m here till Maine!

In 2019 when I hiked the AT I spent my first night in that cemetery.
I just subscribed. Interesting video. I just want a small share in the magic. Best wishes to you.

Be safe mindy, remember all your survival skills you learned from Barrow
Hi Peaches!!🍑
Is your trail name Tomatooooooo??? I would be totally freaked if a truck showed up at midnight. You were brave!
wait until you get to Danielsville , Pa ... you'll have plenty of trail magic waiting.
Great start! Love the part about the soldiers coming in. Had me worried also. You got this! PS Did you learning how to use your knife yet? LOL
Well, you made it through the first night. Considering the car coming in and then the trucks, I think you did well. Oh, and sleeping in a cemetery!
