Hi Cip, The vase looks beautiful. The wood has a beautiful grain and a high gloss. Thumbs up for the work and thank you that we were allowed to see the work
Sorry Rich for not responding. Some comment do not appear in the usual manner. There is a playlist of three videos on my RUclips home page to help you: Inside-Out Christmas Ornament. These videos have plenty of up-close detail. Thanks for watching. Cheers.
Last year, I did the inside outside Xmas decoration. This year it looks like a vase. I like your videos; not too fast so I can follow and you explain things very well. Keep up the good work.
+Paul Brownell Hey there Paul! It is always good to have your kind of encouragement. I hope to have another video out soon, but the weather is not cooperating. All the Best...
Nice work Cip. I love how every time I turn something, I think it's ugly and a waste, until I'm done, then I'm (usually) amazed at how much I like it. Same here, I wasn't impressed with the piece even when you parted it off, but with the bearings and flowers, it became the full piece. Again, nice work, thank you for the video.
Thank you for watching. Yes, I too was a bit unsure how it would look on it's own. Adding the ball bearing and small flowers did compliment the vase. All the best.
My first introduction to inside out wood turning, and a very pleasant one at that. It's kind of like photography in a way, inasmuch as you are not quite sure of the final results until you re-assemble the pieces for the final turning. Yours turned out really great, - I hope I can manage to do as well. Thanks for sharing. Ed
Great video Cip, I am fit enough again to get back in the workshop and waste some time doing what I love to do. I must try this method of turning as soon as possible, the problem is you make it look so easy but everything was very well explained so it shouldn't be a problem if I stick to your method. Thanks for showing. All the best Tony
***** Hello Tony,Always glad to hear from you. I will be out of the shop for a while. Just had my gall bladder removed. Can't left more than 10 lbs for the next 6 wks. My garage door weighs more that.Inside out turning is fun. Give it a try.Cheers, Cip
Harry Watts Hi! Harry,Thanks for watching my video. Question: Are my video too long? I can't seem to make the short like many of the other turners.Cheers, Cip
***** Hey there. Thanks for your comment. Most wood turners now use chucks on their lathes which makes them more like metal lathes. Turning wood on a metal lathe sounds like fun and could lead to some interesting results.
Good afternoon Cip, I must say that you have me here. I saw your video, and i immediatly, well to be honoust not immediatly but the day after, i started working on an inside out project. Looked up the video for the paper gleuing. Thanks for that. And started. Was working on something else, but i actually didn`t want to do that one, so i started nosing around the internet. I made the choice to use oak for this project. I have some french room-dried oak, wich is great for projects like these. It has such a nice collor, and the drawings in the wood is sometimes just awesome. So the choice is farely quick made. I think i`ll try again tommorow. (spinal isseus) But she`s ready to go chuck. My idea was to make a container for pencils. I don`t know if i will succeed, but the idea is to have several "windows" in it. Well, many thanks to you, you have inspired me with this one. And i thank you for that. Dries
Dries Verhagen Hello Dries, This project took me two tries. The second one worked out much better. I usually make them from 2 x 4 yellow pine studs. I suggest your practice before you try oak. It is a fun project. All the best, Cip
Cip's Wood Chips Thanks for the tip Cip. Question. When i go down into the piece, and i keep that small Like an U-shape. Will the window then be smaller? Kind regards, Dries
Dries Verhagen The deeper the cut, the narrower the ribs, the bigger the windows. The cuts for the vase throat were shallow, thus no windows. The cuts for the stomach of the vase were deep, thus big windows.
Howdy CraiZen! It is fun give it a try. I started by practicing with simple 2x4 inch lumber. It is a learning process, so save the good wood for when you have it figure out. Good Luck, Cheers.
Good video. I like inside out turning because you never know what you are going to get until you are done. The ball bearings inside give weight and appeal to your vase. Thank you.
+mrlacroft Hello Mrlacroft!Yes, it turned a bit different than I planned, but that is not too unusual for me. Somewhere along the way it they take on their own shape. Cheers, Cip
And now bring this to next level by making/buying suitable glass vase (colored glass preferred) and inside-out turn wood vase around it. I would do this, actually making my own custom glass vase, but i dont have lathe or experience with one enough to take this kind of project on.
Howdy! An interesting idea. One problem is the inside surfaces are convex instead of concave. Still, a very interesting idea. Thanks for the suggestion. Cheers.
Also, if you use some brightly coloured tape around each end to belt-and-braces your initial glue-up, that also reminds you visually not to cut into that area.
I have turned about 6 inside out ornaments. I was taught to sand and finish the inside before reversing the four segments. It seems a lot easier than trying to do it after it IS the inside.
Izzat Ahmadi I have seen many beautiful objects made with lesser tools. Which is more important the tool or the vision? Sorry for getting so philosophical. Cheers.
Howdy ChooChoo35! I learned this technique in 9th grade. It always works good for me. I seen others use newspaper and notebook paper. They work fine too. Kind Regards.
Id want to plan how the grain fits together in the finished piece before the initial turning so that hopefully it will look like a single piece of wood when it's finished.
Howdy Wayne! Softwoods can be difficult to turn smooth. I believe I used yellow pine for the ISO vase, but I've turned a lot of spruce 2x4 studs. With softwood you need sharp tools and a light touch. Try using a spindle or detail gouge instead of a scraper. Good luck.
+Cip's Wood Chips i just bought my first wood lathe. I havnt done lathe work in over 20 years. my teacher said I was good. ...i need to get my passion back. need to do my own thing.
Just one thing, please explain exactly how and what glue do you use, to hold the 4 sections together. I have used hot glue for other things but in ths case I think it would leave a very small gap between the sections. I have not done any inside outturning yet, so this is a great way to start. Thanks for the video. Much appreciated.
Howdy viewer! I have done this with several different wood glues and papers. In this video I used Titebond II, but I used Borden's white and also yellow carpenter's glue, and Titebond original. I have a playlist on my RUclips Channel page with more detail: ruclips.net/video/l76ucLHx2WY/видео.html Best Regards.
Howdy Phil! The paper is strong enough to hold together while turning. The paper is easy to split apart cleanly. This is an old trick from Mr. Allen my junior high woodshop teacher. Cheers
Tom Canada Hey there ! Tom,Using a shape chisel makes it much easier. I been using a new 1/2 inch spindle gouge. It does not want to keep an edge. I am going to keep shaping it until it is gone.Cheers, Cip
Do you need to watch out for vibrations with inside-out turning like you do with bowls? Also would sanding sealer help to get rid of the seams easier? I've never done an inside-out project yet but I'm looking forward to trying it.
Howdy AlisaBeth! I seldom have a problem with vibration, but it is important to be careful while cutting or sanding across the open spaces. I like sanding sealer. I think it makes the wood more stable. It is clear, so I do not believe it helps hid anything. Cheers
I agree about the sanding sealer. I love the natural look of the wood and really hate covering it up with colored stains. I haven't done any inside-out items yet as I'm still pretty new but watching videos like your's is helping me gain confidence. I really appreciate you taking the time to post things like this. I'm sure it help so many. Keep up the amazing work.
I know this video is a year old but I have watched it over and over multiple times along with other videos because for so reason I have not been successful at making any inside out turning and I want to do it and I'm not giving up but I'm not giving up!!!! I do have a suggestion for you though that may make tour lay out a little more clearer. You had a bunch of pencil lines designating the wide part, the narrow part, the ends, etc. Would it be easier to use colored pencils to lay out these lines and make a little "cheat sheet" taped to your head stock to make it easier to identify everything?
+Curt Parker Good suggestion Curt. This was my second inside-out project. Did you view my Christmas Ornament videos? There are three step videos and more detailed. It took me three tries to get the hang of it. You can also make test versions. Make the glue up carve-out only the center, split it, and re-glue, then turn the outside. Good luck.
Hi Sip, I like your videos. but did you notice that you did not reassembly the pieces the same way that you broke them apart . Makes me wonder how important it is that one gets them back together in their perspective location?
I'm also a newbie, but for this past Valentine's Day I turned an inside out candle holder which doubles as a vase for fake flowers. Made out of 2x4's. It's much easier than one would think. Give it a shot :)
Howdy Richard! The four blocks are held together by "tape", strips of brown kraft paper and yellow glue carpenters glue but. The paper makes it easy to separate the blocks later in the process. I have a detail video called "Making a Glue-up Block for Inside-Out Turning": Link ruclips.net/video/l76ucLHx2WY/видео.html from Dec 14, 2103. Cheers
+Daniel Choate Hello Daniel! The first glue up is yellow glue and brown kraft paper. The paper makes it easy to separate the pieces with a chisel. The second gluing is only yellow glue. Thank you for your question. In my playlists there is a separate video just on making a glue block for I-s-o turning. Cheers.

Cheers
You might want to try using some carbon paper to transfer you pattern to the wood, just an idea. Nice video
Howdy Wayne! A good tip. Thank you for your comment. Kind Regards.
No problem. I just thought it might make it easier for you and take away some of the guess work. The piece turned out fantastic. Excellent job.
Awesome
Howdy Al! Thank you for watching and thank you for your comment. Cheers
Perhaps I missed it, but what did you use to glue the four pieces together ?
+Daniel Choate Hello Daniel! The first glue up is yellow glue and brown kraft paper. The paper makes it easy to separate the pieces with a chisel. The second gluing is only yellow glue. Thank you for your question. In my playlists there is a separate video just on making a glue block for I-s-o turning. Cheers.
would it make any difference to use a whole piece then cut it
Howdy Toolman! I think it just makes it more difficult: holding the piece, cutting on center. Interesting question. Cheers.
