    Thanks for another great video Gary. It wasn't until the end that I realised we both had similar jobs. I was an engineering pattern maker. The biggest jobs we turned on the lathe were around the 6 feet diameter. This was done on the end of the lathe with a floor tool rest. I look forward to watching more of your videos.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 года назад +1

      Thanks Dave and I turned a 6 footer on a pattern shop built lathe. Big timbers for the bed and the legs and castings made from patterns that were made at..you guest it..the pattern shop. When I went to the shop I retired from I turned a pattern about 8 foot in diameter on a large post lathe.
      Where did you do your pattern work? Which state or country. Not sure where you are from.

      Gary

      @@ThePapa1947 I am originally from the UK, but in 1967 I moved with my family to Australia. We settled in Adelaide, South Australia for 2 years and then moved to the industrial city of Whyalla, still in South Australia. I originally went for an apprenticeship in Joinery, but they had all been taken. I was steered towards Pattern Making not knowing a thing about it. But it was working with wood. When I had been there for a while, I was glad I took this trade on. The fine tolerances we had to adhere to made me a better wood worker. We worked in the same shop as the joiners. We had a saying on the wall 'Pattern Makers work to the nearest thousandth of an inch and the Carpenters work to the nearest tree' It cause quite a stir amongst the carpenters.

    Gary I really like this. The light inside is a nice touch. You need a heater that you can run all night. Set the temperature to about 60* and it won't be so cold. I feel for you working out there when it's so cold.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  3 года назад

      Thank you Don! Yes I looked into putting a overhead gas heater in the last time we had the house furnace replaced. They said it was not a good idea with the dust. I used to spend the day out in my drift boat fishing in the coldest of the days and I did not care the least. One day my brother and I did that on a 20 degree day. Not no more!
      Take care,
      Gary

    Hi Gary. This is only the second time I’ve watched an inside out turning. The first being your valentines one. Very fascinating process, but I think just a bit above my pay grade at this stage. Both amazing results. I’m sure I’ll get there eventually. When I was turning 45 years ago, you made round things, or you made long round things. I love the way turners are now experimenting and inventing new ways to get awesome results!! Thanks for that, Rick

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  3 года назад +1

      Hi Rick, well lets see if we can get you up another pay grade or so. The first thing I turned was a nut bowl for my mother. We think it is around here somewhere. That was in about 1960 in grade school. Pretty low pay grade back then.
      Thanks for watching,

      Thank you my friend, and now you can try it and be successful. I know when I did my first on a few years ago it took awhile to get the idea of how much to cut away. Realizing that the shape really comes from the center line is all it took. So from that I figured this was the best way to explain that concept.

    Thanks Gary. The main takeaway for me is to try the bandsaw idea. It may help me out most of the way to a successful I-O turning. Thanks for making this tutorial, we appreciate it greatly🙏 Stay safe. -Mike😷💉

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  3 года назад +1

      Thank you Mike and you are welcome. If you want to test the waters you could really start out simple. Just draw a shape like a half of a football. The turning would then be very easy and you will still get a nice shape. Or do a wavy one because that is easy as well. I guess I am just saying give it a try and you will love doing I/O turnings. I made a bottle one as well and of course it has a light in it to.

    Thanks for your various postings. I enjoy watching what other turners do. A great way to get new ideas and your projects are very interesting.
    Do you have a favourite brand of tools? If so what brand and why did you choose that one?
    When I started I bought a number of P&N tools. Unfortunately they're gone and now that I'm getting to the point of needing new ones I'm a bit confused by all the 'sales hype' out there. Just looking for the opinions of other turners, not necessarily of vendors. Thanks for any info you can provide.

      I use the Robert Sorby tools. I think they are well made and hold a good edge. I also have a number of Benjamin Best that I bought to try different grinds. Ones I do not use that often. They actually work very well. Not sure how often I need to sharpen compared to the others because I do not use them as much. But I do use one of their scrapers all the time and it works great.
      Hope that helps.

    Would it work to turn any design into the midsection of a square post, leaving the ends squared, then cutting that stock lengthwise into 4 pieces and regluing the turned surface towards the center?

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 года назад

      Yes that is one way to do it. Depending on the design you are making you might loose a little of it but it may not be noticeable on some shapes.

    Gary, do you have a preference for this process over the one you used for the Christmas ornament? Other than using the bandsaw to rough out the hollow, I see you get the hole on the bottom "predrilled". If you weren't planning for the light, which method would you choose?
    Josh

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  3 года назад

      Hi Josh, well I kind of like the freedom you get not band sawing the piece. But if there was a shape I just had to have then I would band saw it. This was the first time I had cut the shape before hand even though I knew it would work for sure. I cutting that profile will help someone get the grasp on how and why this works. Also will keep you from cutting to deep. I have successfully made 3 of those Christmas ornaments that look the same without the bandsaw method.
      I hope that answered your question, if not feel free to ask. Always happy to answer if I can.

    HI Gary, this is an excellent tutorial. Much needed. I have seen you can do a 2 segment inside out turning, which fits an idea I have. Any pitfalls to be wary of? Thank you for the shout out too! Take care. Ray

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  3 года назад +1

      Thank you Ray, no I think 2 sided would be easy enough. You are turning much more air so if it is balanced higher RPM as long as it is secure and safe. Like always that is up to the person doing it to know what i safe for them. I was going to make a 2 sided heart but I wanted to put a light in it. Next time!
      Your shout out is well deserved!
