That's awesome thanks. I've been turning some dip pens which are partly 3 sided (using 3 colours of wood) and other dip pens which are round with an inside out section. The three sided inside out idea occured to me, which led me here. The flame looks amazing, so today I'll be attempting a pen with a flame in the grip (bulge in the dip pen). 16mm is the maximum diameter, so got the dread feeling already. It's amazing when I get a crazy idea how often I end up here. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Nice piece! I think I'll try to make one of these. Save your fingers! Use a dry sponge between your hand and the sandpaper. Should the paper slip or grab there's a layer of protection for your fingers. The sponge is stiff and gives the same support to the sandpaper as your fingers while protecting your hand. Hope this helps.
I have done several 4 stave inside out turnings but never thought about 3 stave. Yours is great. Love the flame inside. great color work It looks realistic. Now that you have done a 3 stave, what about two? Thanks for sharing.
Well done Alan, I will have make some, they would be great candidates for some surface embellishments (a la Steven Kennard). Or maybe some pyrography, or maybe both?
First time seeing this. I’ve never done one of these but would love to try one sometime soon. Any suggestions on how to get started would be very appreciated.
Hi Alan. At the first glue up, did you ONLY use the tape around the bundle and CA glue on each end? The reason for the question is I have seen others use paper between the staves so it would release easy after first cutting.
On previous inside out projects I have used paper joints. I've also used band clamps around the bundle. In Dale's demo, he used this process and I decided to try it and see if it would work for me. It did. I think paper joints are more secure but this was adequate. Thank you Ed Alan
I really liked 3 stave turning, but I didn't go to far in the schoolhouse and I'm having trouble with the math part, is there a easy way to do this. Thank you.

As long as you are safe - go for it - it is only wood.
Alan
Very interesting. I’ve never seen a three stave inside-out piece before. Thanks for sharing.
Well, now you have - universe expanded!
Alan
I'm brand new to turning so it will be a while before I tackle something like this but saving it for something to aspire to. Absolutely beautiful.
Keep it in mind and keep turning. You'll get there.
Alan
A lovely result showing some masterful turning Alan.
Great video.
Cheers
Mike
Thank you Mike - You're gracious.

How pretty, I must try that.
Please do!

Like the method Alan, even i understood it! Great result!😁😁😁😁👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Super - I guess it really is best when understood. :)
Alan
Very nice process for a 3 sided Io turning. I use 3 hex shaped pieces but I'll be trying this method...less wood! Thanks, Jim Jakosh
I had not thought of hex. but yes that is probably more wood.
Alan
I prefer triple stave inside/outside turning too. This is a very nice piece. I will have to try one of these.
Give it a try but be careful in the sawing.
Alan
Excellent video and project. Once I have access to an appropriate saw, it's on my list!
Well, sawing for this one is critical and must be safely done.
Thanks for commenting.

Wonderful! Have not seen a 3 stave inside out before. New finial design, perhaps? Thanks for sharing his styling.
It would be a rather large finial but possible.
Thanks for watching.
Alan
Dang, first inside out I've seen. What a cool idea. Beautiful work.
Thank you Suzette.
They are a great project.

Two staves seem pretty chunky - I'd have to work on that to get them to look good.
But, very possible.
Alan
Amazing work!

Send me some pictures Bert. Great ideas.
Alan
FYI, if you dye from dark to light and sand back between colors, it generally looks better.
I guess it depends on how much you sand back - Worth experimenting with.
Alan
First time seeing this. I’ve never done one of these but would love to try one sometime soon. Any suggestions on how to get started would be very appreciated.
Try it. but first do a search for my other inside-out videos.

A masterclass .......

Alan
6:48 how is the gouge not going into the cavity and break the thin wood?
1. Very light pressure
2. Shear cut with edge nearly vertical to wood rotation.
Alan
I really liked 3 stave turning, but I didn't go to far in the schoolhouse and I'm having trouble with the math part, is there a easy way to do this. Thank you.
Don't let math stop you. Just cut 60 degrees staves and give it a try.
It will come
Alan
As Wood Turns ..I am having the same problem. Do you have any footage of actually cutting the staves?
😲👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you Mike
