No wonder we can't find a copy of early D&D--this guy is hoarding them all!
I am so bummed that you only have three videos on your channel, it's just so great seeing the history of D&D. Fingers are crossed that The Great Kingdom will some day get released.
When I saw that WALL OF RPGs I drooled all over myself. hehe. :) I have never seen an original D&D boxed set. Maybe one day I'll own one, even if it is just the reprint that WOTC put out.
They're nice but they changed the art so that's a bit disappointing
Wow. As an aspiring game collector with too little funding, I am just glad to even see such things in video. I look forward to future instalments.
Your videos are incredible!! Only problem you only did three. :-( Everyone that does RUclips TTRPG history videos is hugely indebted to you and Shannon Applecline -- the TWO master TTRPGs historians -- Read "Playing at the World" cover to cover, and Chapters 1 and 5 twice. Loved it!! When are you doing a reprint -- please do a reprint! :-)
Kewl stuff, but I am really interested how the rules of D&D changed and developed over the years and why, what were the influences etc etc. Good beginning. Cheers from ENB's channel!
Wow I am lucky that I got my copies early but I only have one woodgrain box but 1st - 4th printing of each booklet. I started collecting in 1975.
Great video! It is nice to see all the versions in one place for comparison. When I was a kid I saw the Holmes edition on display at a local toy store and really wanted it. I never got the money to buy it. I loved looking at that cover art. I have been able to read it since then but I still don’t have a copy. It is funny how us kids talked about Gary Gygax all the time at school, but I never played a real game. We would role play at recess with no dice or books. We lived in a poor area.
Big fan of the website. Didn’t know about the channel. Bravo.
Seems a promising start---here's to hoping to see some ancient Tekumel wranglings as one of the eldest peers of them all.
"They were being cobbled together by the Gygax family."
Cobbled..inadvertent pun due to Gygax working with shoes at the time to support his family?
We need more videos!
WOW!!! Who's museum is that? I almost fell out of my chair when I saw so many copies of the wood grain OD&D boxes together. Amazing!!
WOW, your channel is great, I have watched all your videos so far and am subscribing. now if you could just give me your addresses so I could send my Rouge over to... Just kidding, what a great collection you guys have and keepers of history.
Please reprint your book Jon! The inflated prices of the first printing say it's time. I read it thru my local library and now even that copy has been swiped. I need one on my shelf!
Love this series! You are an incredible gaming historian!
Really enjoyed this video. I'd love to tour his collection. It looks amazing.
Thanks for posting.
This is great stuff you got going on here, love learning about the history of D&D ,please make more videos on this subject and soon too, thanx .....
Jon, where I can buy or download pdf of your excellent book "Playing at the world". Amazon and abebooks want more than $300 now..
I think you can still buy a digital copy, you're right physical copies are crazy expensive. That's what I did several of years ago, bought a digital copy I think through Amazon for the Kindle. Don't own a physical copy. Jon -- please do a REPRINT!! I actually hear that maybe a reprint is in the works. 🙂
Great video, I loved the book and have read it a couple of times. I hope you keep making videos!
I'd love to have old dnd books physical, especially the BECMI books, but I don't want them enough to pay the ebay prices for used copies.
I hear you! Fortunately WoTC makes the BECMI PDFs available for cheap thru Drivethru -- I know -- not quite the same, but for me digital is enough. You're right don't need to spend eBay prices on physical copies.
This is an amazing lesson in the history of an amazing hobby.
Excellent and informative video
ENB sent me here!
Dat collection doe 😗😯😮😧😨😱😱😱
This channel does not have many vids ☹️
Man still waiting on the sequel
I am so glad I discovered this channel!
More please.
Wow! SO many Woodgrain and Whiteboxes :O I'm struck with awe!
Interesting video. Please post more on how the game developed.
Go! Looking forward to more episodes...thank you.
Jon, here is a related video straight from the proverbial horse's mouth with Tim Kask telling hwo they used to take care of storing the bits and assembly of the products as orders came in. Starts around at 51:50

Good stuff. Love your work.
Great work and research. Keep it up!
Great stuff... Can't wait for more...
What is the name of the castle model displayed at 0:11. I had that as a kid and have always wanted to know what it was.
Nice video. I got the sixth print rerelease OD&D PDFs on DriveThruRPG last night just to see what it was like. It's interesting how far RPGs have come since their humble origins.
love it!!
Came here from ENBs channel subscribed for nowwww
Awesome shirt!
My experience of original dungeons & dragons was quite different from what I hear from others, especially from the grognards who talk about playing with "Gary," etc.
What we got from those early rules was the concept of a roleplaying game. Beyond that, only one of the DMs I played with played Rules as Written. We all called our games "D&D" because that was the only name we knew for roleplaying but my game, for instance, never gave more HP for going up levels and that meant that I had to make many more changes.
This is so fucking good! I wish there is much more. There is a real market for well made videos about D&D history.
EpicNameBro hear
FANTASTIC collection and information but desperately need a new interviewer!!
I seriously want to give you a makeover.
