  • M. Night Shyamalan returns to the Director's chair...ok...this hasn't been a good thing as of late. Maybe he can find some redemption in a found footage movie about a couple of kids visiting their creepy Grandparents. Jeremy reviews "The visit"!

      +ttv0 Well, knowing who's making a film and knowing their history... Our opinion about them could in therms effect our opinion of a trailer for their next film. Sadly... I've seen trailers and liked them. Then i found out who made the film. Saw the trailer again. This time i could see so much wrong with it. But when i saw the film... It was decent enough. So really, you not liking a trailer could be your judgement of the guy behind the film. Not saying you are doing anything wrong. It would be a typical human error really. I think Shamalamadingdong still has tallent.... His just not done the right things lately. But maybe now that hes back to the things he actually knows how to do his actually made a good film again. Can't wait to see it atleast.

    I just saw "The Visit" & I really liked it. The twist towards the end caught me off guard. I thought the two young stars did a great job. I got chills. I jumped. I laughed. I walked out of the theater wanting to see it again. The funny thing is, a lot of people in the audience I sat with booed when Shyamalan's name appeared in the opening credits. But those same people clapped & cheered by the end of the movie. I think that sums up everything nicely. If this movie is a hit, maybe M. Night Shyamalan will get the green light to do Book Two in the Airbender trilogy.

    Unbreakable - Definitely Worth Buying on Blu-Ray
    Signs - Good Time No Alcohol Required
    The Village - Good Time If You're Drunk
    Lady in the Water - Won't Remember it in T-Minus 1 Hour
    The Happening - Won't Remember it in T-Minus 10 Minutes (Didn't give it Dogshit because its actually hilariously bad!)
    The Last Airbender - Dogshit
    After Earth - Dogshit
    The Visit - Worth Buying on Blu-Ray

They are intelligent enough to make spaceships that go invisible and are capable of interstellar travel but they didn't fucking research any of that? Also what the fuck is with the pantry door scene?

    realizing my favorite surprised me. but it's gotta be Signs.
    it has the "alien invasion thwarted by something innocuous" thing from HG Wells' War of the Worlds. BUT it's the story of a family rebuilding itself and a man seeking redemption and restoration of his faith in not only his views but in people that I truly appreciated.

    • @joshday1997
      @joshday1997 9 лет назад +5

      Agreed! It's always been more about the family and their internal conflicts. The aliens at secondary. I love that movie.

    • @orinanime
      @orinanime 9 лет назад +2

      Joshua Day
      Yup. The aliens are just the impetus for the family repairing itself. Totally secondary. I think that's the problem most haters had with the movie. They just didn't want to accept that it wasn't truly about the invasion. They were just the backdrop.

    • @joshday1997
      @joshday1997 9 лет назад +1

      I found both of them far too predictable and therefore boring.
      Unbreakable had too much of Sam Jackson's over-acting. The Sixth Sense didn't scare me. It just grossed me out. And I knew Bruce Willis was a ghost pretty damn fast.

  • @jakemitchell1132
    @jakemitchell1132 9 лет назад +2

    M. Night's career can be summed up the way Chris Stuckmann described it, like a baseball player. The first few years he is home runs (Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs), then you don't see any home runs and his average starts to slip (The Village, Lady in the Water), then he just quits baseball (The Happening, Last Airbender, After Earth). Then the player returns but you know he's not going to start hitting home runs again immediately, instead he just gets some good base hits (The Visit). How will the career of this "baseball player" continue, I guess we'll wait and find out.

      Yep! More so for its down to earth and isolated approach to Alien Invasion as well as the family dynamic. I can't deny the issues, like God killing the wife just so she can warn the husband to tell his brother to swing away. Or why Aliens would even want to invade a planet covered in water when water is toxic to them. But the directing, the idea, the family, and the look of the movie I love.

Nice to hear that this one (and his tv-show) are a return-to-form for him.

    Those moments of tension mixed with comedy may have felt unnatural to most, but I really liked the juxtaposition. This tone was because there were two cuts of the film. One was horror, and the other comedy. He combined both cuts for the final product and it worked brilliantly imo.

    Loved it. Love Shyamalan. The only movie of his that I don't like was Airbender.
    He's a fantastic director with a beautiful mind for storytelling. Sadly, the general audience doesn't have the patience or brain function for his films, it seems. He gets so much crap and it's not deserved. As a film student, I learned that technically he does everything right. (Again, aside from Airbender) for some reason, people just don't "get" him.
    Signs is my favorite movie of his and of all time. It's NOT an alien movie and it was never intended to be. That movie is so deep and has so many layers to it. The message and moral of Signs is what makes it such a beautiful film. It is so under appreciated. The Village is incredible too. Shyamalan likes to explore emotion and relationships. He usually uses the backdrop of something freaky to tell a beautiful story.
    I don't think The Visit was traditional M. Night, but it was very well done. I liked the humor. I think it was honestly more realistic.

    "3 words: CREEPY OLD PEOPLE" doesn't even begin to describe how terrifyingly good 'The Visit' is! M. Knight Shyamalan is back with a vengeance, because this is no supernatural jump-scare fest (there are only 2 or 3, & they work), but a slow burn that builds & makes you feel as if you are going through the ordeal along side the characters! There is a twist ( it is a Shyamalan flick after all), but I really didn't see it coming (NO SPOILERS, see it yourself!). This film could give adults nightmares, it hits ya right where ya live, & it plays on so many real-world fears! 4 stars, hands down!

My friend and I were the only 2 people in the theater for this showing so we were able to talk, and I did laugh out loud at what I think is the same scene you may have laughed out loud at, Jeremy. I wish there had been a bit more explanation about the grandparents, and I am glad this found-footage movie was not completely made of shaky-cam. I may be buying this movie, but probably not on blue-ray. This is my favorite of Shyamalan's movies thus far, closely followed by Signs (it took a few viewings for it to grow on me).

    • @thomaschitham3487
      @thomaschitham3487 9 лет назад

      ***** Be that as it may, the difference is that back then Street Fighter was a big thing when it came out. Few believed that it could turn into something big after its initial release; but it did.
      Avatar (tv show), on the other hand, was a big hit after the first few episodes and still stayed strong, even getting a spin off series.
      Thus in lies the problem; the movie did not fulfil the expectations that not only a decent movie needs, but the expectations an Avatar movie needs as well. Even if the next movie is better than the last one, it is still not going to make a difference because the first of the saga everyone found horrible.

    The village really is the most under-rated M night Shyamalan film. It had a lot of really great actors. Adrien Brody being one of them. It had a really great twist at the end where it didn't turn out to be a monster horror movie, but an even scarier human drama. Because the scariest movies are always about the illusion of safety of everyday life. Fantasy kind of takes you out of that realm of "It could happen to you". For those of you who never liked The Last Airbender... it was probably just a movie ahead of its time. A lot of people didn't understand it.

      You make a fair point. Honestly I just want to see a movie that I actually find scary. I had that feeling temporarily in The Village a few years ago... and then the twist happened and I felt complete disappointment.

    • @oompie815
      @oompie815 9 лет назад +1

      Nadine J I can understand that, but I find The Village more of a psycological thriller.
      You assume it's monsters that is scaring the people, but in reality it is actually the people.
      People they live with. their mother and father.
      Theire uncles and auntys.
      Just imagine that it is your own people who go to such great lenghts to keep you isolated in such a place.
      I know it's for their own safety.
      But it is steel creepy.
      The perfect example was given by the mother of Adrien Brody who 'sacrificed' the death of her son, to be a part of their lie.
      Its just like in The Mist where there are people hiding in a store from monsters outside, when in reality the real 'monsters', are the people they knew for so long.
      But that's just how I see it.

    M. Night needs to do movies with a small budget, because even his good movies that seemed like they were big weren't on huge budgets. Like Signs, even though it was about an alien invasion, it stayed on this one family on a farm and how they are dealing with the situation. But, when he tries to do something big like The Last Airbender, he completely loses anything good that he had going. So I'm excited to see him to do something that doesn't suck.

      Yes just like the majority of filmmakers, Shyamalan is an auter...when he's out of his element of suspense, thrills and surprises, it just falls flat. He truly is the Hitchcock of our generation(s). Hitchcock wisely never ventured out of his domain. The only filmmaker who can truly pull off multiple genres that I can think of offhand is Spielberg. Even Scorsese sticks to his shtick of crime and city life mostly.

    The last time I went to the movies was for Frozen. I don't like going to the movies unless it's for something really important like Harry Potter but for some reason I really wanted to see this movie so I did. This movie made me remember that one of my earliest passions was filmmaking. I loved this movie so much. At first I was confused because I didn't realize it was gonna be found footage style. And also because nothing scary was happening for awhile. There were a lot of little details in the beginning that seemed insignificant and I was like okay why are they even showing this? And then they ended up being really important in the end. It was seriously one of the best stories I've encountered in awhile. I felt so many different emotions during this film and that's what I think makes it unique and I wish I could meet M. Night Shyamalan and thank him myself for the experience. It wasn't just a horror movie. It was EVERYTHING. I felt moments of pure terror, where I cursed "fuck" out loud in the movie theater and had to cover my ears and look away out of fear. I felt moments of pure happiness where I was laughing uncontrollably. During one scene the entire audience applauded because we were so happy for the character. It truly was an experience. When I first saw it, I was a little taken aback from all the different emotions I felt. I was confused. It was a roller coaster of emotions. But looking back, I think it's one of the best movies I've ever seen. Something seriously unprecedented in the movie community. I'm not british and I'm not sure this expression is accurate but cheers to being yourself M. Night Shyamalan :p
