Chris Stuckmann reviews The Visit, starring Kathryn Hahn, Deanna Dunagan, Peter McRobbie, Ed Oxenbould, Olivia DeJonge. Directed by M. Night Shyamalan.
The sport analogy is so fucking on point.
Yeah he really knocked that one out of the park.
+adamcastelsay But did he cover all bases though?
+nay naynay That's not appropriate for a PG-13 movie review. lol
+adamcastelsay BA DUM TISS
+sivad parks my bad ;)
This fall we could get four return to forms:
•Shamylan
•Johnny Depp
•Ridley Scott
•Star Wars
We got one back, now it's on you Black Mass, The Martian, and The Force Awakens.
+Aigg Ebe The reports are saying that Black Mass is fantastic, like really good. :P
And Pixar.
Paymon Khaleghi Pixar JUST returned to form like a few months ago. :P
+Saztog Gaming eh inside out was good but not great like its earlier films
RDLgo Opinions, even though I agree with you, you still have to admit that it was better than freaking Cars 2.
Subtext of the Last Airbender: It's horseshit.
+Pokefan2199 I think you're being a little generous...
That's putting down horseshit
+Pokefan2199 Excuse me sir, I am in fact horseshit, and I find that offensive.
Horseshit is a good fertilizer, so it doesnt apply for TLA lol
I think TLA's subtext was supposed to be that the Fire Nation was evil for going against God- I mean the spirits (because THAT doesn't have any unfortunate implications) but of course, like everything else in that abomination of a film, it just sucked.
I found it quite scary. Two kids alone with these weird grandparents ... And the revelation ... OMG...
I love the Twist
It's not that crazy.
The Brother's "Rapping" was the scariest thing here.
So obvious, though.
I thought that was gonna be the twist from the get-go.
They are old people, what can they do againts them? Lol
Plus they never saw the grandparents before??
YAHTZEE !!!

I CAN SEE IT IN MY MIND
Well. This sounds like a delight. Great review mate!
eyyo Mr Sunday Movies big fan!
ayyyyyyyyyy
It came out early in my country and its really well done. For me it's better than both The Visit and Lady in the Water. But about the twist, it's pretty expected. It's simple and effective, but it kinda just leaves a lot unexplained.
So you're now the official Chris Stuckman fan of the podcast?
+Mr Sunday Movies Ayyyyyyy Where's my psghetti?
Shyamalan has finally made a good movie again...I don't know how to feel right now...I'm ecstatic but nervous for further surprises.
Is it good because stuckmann said so? I ain't believing for a second
+Super Imposter There are not a lot reviews about the movie yet
+MrMyster1ous *Cough* It's actually kinda not good *Cough*
+MrMyster1ous You can also watch the show Wayword Pines that Shyamalan produced (and directed some I believe). It's on Hulu and only 10 episodes long and it's wonderful.
+Matt B Drawings It's good because it's sitting at 70% on RT right now. Like Stuckman said M. Night didn't win the World Series but he did put up a good season.
Please, The Shaun the Sheep Movie review. I've asked everyone. You're my only hope.
+Ms. Service Schmoes did made a review
I don't know why, but..seeing requests for Shaun the Sheep movie reviews are *hilarious*.
Please, never stop! :)
+Andrew Shieh Not only did they review it, I'm pretty sure they picked it as the best movie of the month lol
"Help me Chris stuckmann, your my only hope"
+Felipe me yea he did, and one of his favourites of the year
Hmm weird that you didn't find this movie creepy. Personally this movie scared the living shit out of me
Me too!!
The old people could've killed the kids at any point of time.
It could've gone a bit darker tho. There could've been some sexual abuse.
It was stupid
the under the house hide and seek scene...was like crap myself...lol!
I actually enjoyed the movie a lot. It almost felt like an urban legend being made into a film.
My actual reaction to seeing this in my sub box:
"OOOOH SHIT HERE WE GOOO!"
+Wasabi is Cool Same

This is a criminally underrated movie. I’ve heard so many people say they hate it, but I personally really liked this film. That twist ending had my jaw to the floor...
Great movie...very creepy
I know its been a long time but i recently saw this movie and think the same. The movie is criminally underrated. The twists were so insane. Some corny parts but this is definitely one of my favorites.
agreed, the "corny" parts seem intented: they're kids, the plot is scary af bc it could happen: mental health is sometimes very scary (even if they were their actual grandparents), and how it was connected the siblings trauma with the climax it was on point
I went and saw this Monday night and I liked it. During the jump scare when the girl jumps out of the closet to scare her brother someone in the theater got so scared by it that they let out this HUGE fart (there were like 20 people in the theater). Everyone heard it. I thought I was going to die laughing at it hahahah
Lol, so weird 😁😁😁
Classy 👍🏻
I dont believe this at all. U couldnt hear a fart during a jumpscare ar any theater ive ever been to.
*FFFFFFFFFFFRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRPPPPPPTTTTTTTTTTTTTT* ^.^
Hahahahaa
Its funny how as a casual watcher most films are ok to you and then you see critics bash a lot of the movies you didn't think were horrible.
Theres a huge bunch of old movies that i really like and i had no idea they got bad reviews and hate before the internet became a big thing.
Because critics think critically. Most people aren't very good at critical thinking.
@@perineum6 Not necessarily. Many critics also write to audiences and try to give in to their expectations. E. g. the issue with the Joker movie being "violent".
Well, to put it in perspective, critics watch movies for a living, so they see a LOT of them. Therefore, things that are repetitive or cliched in movies are probably more obvious to critics than casual viewers who don’t watch as many.
I honestly get mad at the amount of hate little nicky gets
just saw the movie, old people can be creapy as hell, good movie.
So is your grammar
+BoltUp 7101 teach me, since english is my third language it is not that solid, thx
+ScreeAT There's nothing wrong with your grammar. You just spelt creepy wrong. Good job:)
not grammar, just spelling. english is my 4th
I like it when people make excuses
I'm not gonna lie, my favorite part was near the climax/ending with the refrigerator door. I was in stitches! XD
Jessica Gonzales mine too👍
It kinda ruined the scariness but I didn’t care cuz it was hilarious lol
Gambit X oh fuck oh shit bro you got his ass
[spoiler]
That diaper scene still haunts me...
Roger França
XD
Same with that half hinder scene. (Hinder is another word for butt.)
[Spoiler]
When he smacked that diaper in his face...that made me gag about five times. I had to refrain from gagging at dinner that night.
the scary part is that a mother, has not shown her children a picture of their grandparents
I thought exactly the same...
You are totally right. Because of this thought, I made the METAPHOR in my head, that the two crazy people are in fact REPRESENTING the mother...
@@MultiCygne well then you are crazy also
I see the same thing with Adam Sandler's movie "The Cobbler" where he goes back to his roots and acts in a small budget movie which is way better than his last 3-4 movies.
You mean his last 10 movies
The Cobbler is a good film
@Patrick Pepples no I mean his last 10 movie. Funny people would have been his last one within that timeframe
Did you hear that popular theory that the aliens in Signs are actually demons? Makes the movie a lot better imo.
+Real Human Bean Huh. That actually does fix most of the stuff that doesn't quite work in the movie
Was that from the Vigilante Christian?
+DeadlyAlienInvader Its the Criligant Vistian.
+Joshua Knepshield drunken peasants master race!
+Bronz LeRue I thought they called him the Villangent Christian?
While I do typically trust you, I don't know what to think because you usually go to easy on shyamalan
+That Guy on the Left (LGC) ikr, i dont know either...
i thought that to, but actually really enjoyed this film Top 10 for this yr in my books
+That Guy on the Left (LGC) maybe you are too harsh? maybe he is just being fair and not blindly following the Shamalama hate train.
+Michael Martinez Or maybe some of us are more critical to protect our hard-earned cash from being pointlessly wasted. But hey, if you earn a thousand bucks per month, we understand.
***** exactly!
How could he have directed the kids in The Last Airbender so poorly, but very well in The Visit?
I think it was just that that those kids were fucking atrocious actors.
+Kristen ingram I also heard that corporate executives got in the way big time and screwed with the movie.
Plus I wouldn't say all the kids were atrocious as the woman who played the Nothern Water Tribe Princess went on to play Asami from Legend of Korra.
Kristen ingram If you saw Noah Ringer in behind-the-scenes footage, you can see that he's smiling, laughing and goofing around, just like Aang would.
+GameStation3 why wasn't he doing that in the damn movie, because y'know that's what aang did
ChewbaccaAndFriends
Because of direction.
That baseball player analogy would actually make a really good movie!
@@thewhiteskull4003 ?
That was actually a good movie, i just watched it.
Me too I loved the last 20 mins
+Squiddy 51 I love when the guy put the diaper in his face I thought it was hilarious
Yeah I watched that part like 20 times but gotta feel for Tyler (ed) hehehheehhehehehe
LOL IT WAS SO FUNNY XD
i've been having nightmares for 3 months -.-
I wouldn't say that The Signs was a hit, I thought it sucked hard.
But that is just my opinion of course, I will say that there are some good parts in it.
The marketing was better than the actual product.
The movie was popular when it came out so it was a big hit and it was years later that many people started to dislike it i think.
+BDWJ1987 I was going to write this too lol
+MovieDrivenHDD It sucked
you are totally right. Chris is very wrong if he thinks this director has three hits, it's more like 1 and a half. Not a Spielberg, but a Spielbergo.
But what about THE PHANTOM PAIN? NOOO!
+rouzbeh ba probably trying to beat it.
+rouzbeh ba That game is super long, I still haven't beaten it and I've been playing it everyday since release.
Ya cmon review it
+rouzbeh ba IT'S A RUSE! 9/11 WILL REVEAL THE REAL GAME!
+Matt Matriciano I beat it on less than 50%, the percentage is total game, not how far through the story you are.
I found this movie scary and comical at the same time, it's certainly a one of a kind and it deserves a b!
I loved this film. As a 2ed and 3rd shift CNA on a dementia unit I knew it was what we call "sundowning" right away and the realness of that made it a fun scary movie for me. Of course these are extreme cases but left unchecked with no nurses or meds it does get crazy like that. I've been attacked enough at work especially during a full moon. Things get freaky after 6pm.
I saw this movie with my cousins last night and we screamed every time the grandma showed up on screen. That lady creeped me out so much. I loved the kid with his rapping and the ending was truly emotional. I connected with the kids because my dad left me too and it shocked me how similar I am to them. I also have a germphobia and hate looking at myself in the mirror so I guess I have issues I need to solve. Thank goodness I don't have grandparents to visit.
To continue with the baseball analogy, way to knock it out of the park...heyooooooo
Wow. A brand new M. Night Shyamalan film in 2015 getting a decent grade! Looks like I won't have to skip it for ROGUE NATION after all.
Now hang on.... you should still Rogue Nation.
HonorAmongScars I was talking about skipping this film to see ROGUE NATION AGAIN. I already saw it in IMAX.
Then go see it again. Also maybe Krampus.
HonorAmongScars Why?
DarkCloudEntertainment Why do you think that?
I think 1 of the things that really adds to the unsettling atmosphere is that you never find out if the grandparents are truly crazy or not, take the scene where the daughter is playing hide and seek with the grandma and the grandma starts chasing her through the crawlspace like she’s trying to hurt her only to find out she was just playing a game, scenes like that really add suspense and mystery to the movie, because you never find out if it was their intention or not
The only extreme nitpicking I can think of in regards to the found footage is how the hell did these kids get such high quality cameras?
+Marblez3 And WHO the imposters actually were...
+What A Lovely Day Found footage movies always have those contrivances, which is why I usually don't like them at all. I hate how the filmmakers of those movies feel they have to commit completely to the 'found footage' to the point where it defies belief that everything of interest is captured on film. However, I will let it slide for this film, because there were only minimal contrivances and often I forgot I was watching a found-footage movie.
+MCModSpotlighter | Girl Gamer, Feminist | Subscribe 4 b00bz I liked how he didn't spell that out for us. We have to infer based on what we discover at the end who they were and what happened. SPOILERS IN CASE SOMEONE READING THIS HASN'T WATCHED IT YET: The impostors were two mental patients who had escaped the mental hospital where the real grandparents volunteered. They went to their home and killed the real grandparents. The lady who came by with a blueberry pie worked at the mental hospital with the grandparents, and when she saw the impostors, she tried to get them to go back to the sanitarium, so they killed her to protect their freedom. .
+What A Lovely Day I think they were recording themselves sleeping just in case some weird shit happened when they were sleeping. They had no idea what was going on so it was a possibility, I guess.
+MCModSpotlighter | "Totally" a Girl Gamer, Feminist | Subscribe 4 b00bz They were clients from the psycho ward that the grandparents were councilors at. They kept on hearing about their wonderful grandchildren and how they were coming to visit. There was a picture on the wall in the kitchen, with the grandparents and the two imposters. And Pop-pop made ref to it towards the end of the movie.
Chris, you crazy. That twist/ending was his most concretely horrifying revelation yet... Agreed there was a lot of great humor- but that really only made the terror more manic and unpredictable. (btw Love watching your reviews!)
Like you said in your "Sixth Sense" review about the father finding out about the mother keeping her daughter sick... that's real horror!
is it just me or has it been a while since the last star wars review?
he did all the prequels
He's still got three months to finish them off. They'll come eventually (most likely).
Yeah, i know he did them
But if i remember correctly, he said he would be doing them monthly...
And it has been way over a month since he did clone wars
+HILMOluiigi He did Episode 3 August 1st. He's still on schedule
+AwesomeTood2 oohh yeah you're right...
sorry :P
i hated this movie
Ditto.
+FilmSelect why? im just asking cause im thinking of seeing it
+Inspector Spinda for me it was 70 Minutes boring and 20 Minutes of Entertainment. I can understand chris that he liked it, but for me it was pure boring.
+FilmSelect but why? like give a reason
+FilmSelect Just a tip - when criticizing, try to give some arguments.Saying "i hated this movie" is just stating your feelings. And frankly, nobody really cares about your feelings (maybe your parents do). Do you have some solid arguments, please? Thank you.
Cant wait to see it now :-)
+xisumavoid Hello xisuma :)

It was pretty good. Slightly unsettling at times.
Let's play with Granny!
We get to see granny ass.
As it was supposed to be
The scariest part is the thing that the grandmother has (sundowning) is real. It's a symptom of Alzheimer's. The person isn't themselves at all. My great grandfather has it and I've witnessed it multiple times.
How far is it in real life than portrayed in the movie if you dont mind me asking?
So does this mean we should stop calling him M knight shamalamadingdong or M knight salamander etc?
Nah, I'm still gonna keep calling him Shamalamadingdong. It's fun.
+Izayic Raccoon Nahhh, we don't need to. Even Benedict Cumberatch's most loyal fans call him Complicated Britishname
+Izayic Raccoon No.
+Izayic Raccoon For now :p depends on if he can go on a good streak again.
+Izayic Raccoon He hasn't earned his full name back just yet, but I think we can start calling him M. Night Shamalamadingdong instead of Mighty Shamadonger.
"Those people are not your grand parents. You have been staying with them the whole time?"
*Shits Pants
_ Smitty858 I just saw this movie. That line. That Line was TERRIFYING
I got chills
yeah thanks for not warning me about spoils, mate
Not dramatic enough
@@fontainefuturistics1726 Stupid fuck. NEVER read comments before you see a movie. In fact don't watch reviews at all. Watch movie then find out about it. Stupid fuck.
I did find it scary, especially at the end it deserves at least a B+ and A for freshness
shit doesn't taste like chicken
This movie was fun with a full theater.
Oh it was a small budget film? I didnt know that. Oh it was a small loan of a few million dollars you say?
saying your discription about this movie made me think about the Gravity Falls cartoon... how awesome would it be to see that series become a horror movie?
Furqon Sandiva (yes I know I'm 7 months late responding to this but fuck it) Gravity Falls is actually very derivative of and heavily influenced by TV shows like Twin Peaks and the X-Files, which are decisively more adult. Alex Hirsch made the cartoon with his own personal experiences as a child in mind, thus the whole show is basically a lighter, family-friendly version of these shows. Keeping the show open to all ages while incorporating those elements of horror is what makes Gravity Falls great in that it requires actual creativity, subtlety, nuance and care to include such frightening, mature themes in a kids animation. Taking away the restraints and having a pure horror would actually fail simply because it's unrestrictive and would take much less actual thought and delicacy. It'd be just like Twin Peaks, but without many of the crucial things that make Twin Peaks great.
Loved this movie. I see it as a mix between Paranormal Activity and the Goonies. I'd like to see this become one of those iconic movies that gets played on TV every October. That would be nice!
One of the scariest movies I have ever seen. Love Shyamalan. I saw it once before. It is on FX now for Halloween, and I cannot finish watching it. Great movie.
good humor. good horror. good drama. yeah shyammy is back! sorta...
So I wasn't going to bother with seeing The Visit until I saw this review by Stuckmann a few days ago and it convinced me to give M.Night another go and see if he was kind of 'back' as some have been saying.
I absolutely hated this film. Holy shit it was predictable, boring as hell and not funny. Seriously where are people getting this comedic side to this film? The kid characters; especially the boy, are just irritating. I thought it was over-acted and no one was believable at all (however I feel it was more the material they were given than their performances). And the whole girl making a documentry/found footage style they went for just didnt work. So many scenes had the same old found footage "why the hell would you be filming this right now" problem that just takes you right out of the film.
You're my favourite youtube film reviewer Stuckmann and I tend to have the same film tastes that you do but shit I couldn't disagree with you more on this. The Visit is horribly predictable, I nearly fell asleep watching it and so yeah sadly, I think I'm done with M Night.
+Brendon Kivell Check out YMS review and also check out MovieBob Review of this garbage.
I totally agree with you. 100%
Just saw this movie. You captured exactly what I was thinking the whole time while watching it. overrated.
Why why why are people praising this barnyard fire of a movie. M night and what he believes children say "I'm on the text with two separate girls". This movie put me "on the cliff with two separate decisions".
You are my new favorite critic! Great reviews and honest talk.
So ahh was the twist any good??
Yes. It turned out that Shyamalan can still make good movies.
+Andrew Ryan Oh I'm gonna watch this if this show this on our theatre.
The twist was very effective, but it left a lot unexplained. Let me just say it's noting supernatural. It has a real world explanation. But then it doesn't explain the grandmas 9:30 thing- which seems supernatural.
+Kenny Schultz can you tell me the twist? I'm not gonna watch the movie anyways
They aren't the real grandparents. The real ones did were couples councillors and the "grandparents" are their patients who killed them and stole their identity. It is explained that the mom only communicated with them through email so she never knew.
Chris, you are talanted critic, but do ourselfs a favor, move yourself slighly to the right in frame. It will be better looking and you will be able to show graphics to the left.
When i went to go see this film, i finally learned to realize how Stuckmann felt about annoying movie theater people. I had to sit next to 3 annoying 9 or 10 year old girls who would would stop talking. They also had there iPhones out with the full screen lighting on, and one of them was actually video taping the film. There was also a two year old with their parents in the back of my seat and the kid would wine and repeat everything that was said in the movie. I didn't really get mad at the toddler, It was really the parents fault for bringing their freakin' 2 year old to go see The Visit. I didn't mine everybody laughing in the theater though cause that was nice because i found the film really hilarious!
Are u kidding?
I thought it was the scariest damn thing and then gets worse as in like most M Night Shyamalan movies there's a twist. My stomach got upset. I was shaking in freaked outness yelling at the kids thru my tv. To get out now. That's why I came looking for reviews. Did you not watch the entire film? I'm not spoiling anything but there's some serious nightmare generating scenes. I thought The Conjuring was scary. I thought The Exorcist was scary. No...To me The Visit took me well beyond both into the madness. All of his movies have those that "scariest ever" scenes. Six sense. Etc. good movie. Good acting. The kids were both unique and talented. I think I give it a solid A- (An "A -minus")
At the same time there's cheesiness like in all of his films. Not as bad as a few like the village, the happening, signs. You really do have to laugh at M Night S
Just watched it myself and man I have to agree. I've seen both the Conjuring and the Exorcist but this movie was fricken' terrifying at points. Great film!'
turboxstar I haven't watched a great deal of horrors, but I'm a big fan of them, this one for sure is the best, my mouth was wide open in disbelief during some moments, when they see the grandma walking around, throwing up! God I can not express my feelings enough to this film! It should go down as one of the best psychological horror films in history! The omen can go home! This was amazing! I understand how Chris has seen most horror films that exist but I think calling it an '-adventure movie' is a disrespect to the film, I understand people have different opinions and I respect that, but some of the scenes were just messed up (in a good, chilling way) the scene where pop pop shoved the diaper in the germophobic kids face, was pure vomit inducing terror. I have watched signs and it is a good movie don't get me wrong. But the way Chris sees it 10x better than this movie is not right to me, this film chilled me to the core, m night shamalan has came back.
turboxstar SPOILER!
I agree so much. The line "those aren't your grandparents. You've been staying with them this whole time?" I nearly shit myself
CrutonTheLobster same lol
"his best movie since The Village" so is that like "the best food I've tasted since eating poop"
me: *watching trailer* would you mind getting in the oven to clean it?
me : nah uh gradma u need to go to bed
That analogy at the start was so accurate I was actually really impressed.
Visit was good, I enjoyed this one, and the twist, although looking back on it is pretty predictable, is still surprising and deeply disturbing.
I liked this movie, a lot. It's really different and fresh in the whole found footage scary movie panorama.
The only problem is knowing it's Shyamalan's. SPOILER.
when I saw the scene where grandma ruins the webcam, I knew what was the twist. Because I expected a twist from Shyamalan. And what it could be? since it didn't show any paranormal element, all that was left was finding the twist in the only thing the viewer assumes from the premise.
I like your reviews man, but I have to say... I absolutely HATED this movie. The scares were predictable, the attempts at humor didn't land any laughs, the kids were annoying as hell (especially the kid rapper), the typical found footage flaws were all present here, and it was all building up to the kid taking a diaper of crap to the face, which was disgusting. Yes, the adult actors were pretty good... but overall, I despise this movie! Glad you were able to find something decent in it at least.
There are so many things wrong with this movie, I tend to agree with chris struckmann´s reviews, but this was a total waste of time. it feels like a good scary movie for kids.
This movie fucking suuuucked.
Chris Wyatt The lil homeboy was horrible
I agree with everything you said about this movie, Chris. I get film is subjective and all but I feel like everyone who hates this film expected it to be a really scary movie and thought the comedy wasn't on purpose, you know, misunderstandings and stuff like that
The comedy was "on purpose" but it was also terrible. "cringe" rapping isn't funny. The cinematography is bad, the acting is average at best, the production is awful, and it's not scary and used jump scares.
its my opinion but i respect yours
***** i understand
There was comedy in the movie?
Jared Kunish i was so scared during this
Just saw it, Chris. The final scene almost had me sobbing. Reminded me of the best emotional scenes in The Sixth Sense (that car scene...). I'm so happy right now. Shammy's back!!!
Explain
+Noah Caboose But spoilers!
+The Critical Gist with JudgyJosh I MUST KNOW
+Noah Caboose It's just a very touching scene involving a parent that bookends the emotional arc in a nice way. Quite heartwarming.
+The Critical Gist with Judgy Josh yup. This time with actresses who can act. better than anything from the happening
I thought this movie was a terrifying and actually a scary movie. The old lady ruined my freaking lifeee. I guess I'm just a cry baby.
The thing about M. Knight, he's spectacular. When he's good, he's excellent. When he bombs, he takes down the whole neighbourhood. He's a great storyteller, but after his initial success it kinda seems he got too caught up in it all, and forgot to make movies for the joy of it, and instead tried to dissect just make hits. It's totally understandable, because I'm sure the studios were pressuring him big time, and I'm sure he wanted to make commercially successful films.
Maybe now that time has passed he's finally got over it. I for one am rooting for him, because he's always had a very unique perspective as a storyteller, and he's willing to take chances. I really wanna see him on top again, because he has the potential to do things with film, that not many would even dream of. So, best of luck to you, M.
A Visit worth a visit.
... and a fast exit out as well!
corny joke
This movie SCARED THE SHIT out of me!! (no pun intended if you saw it haha) The TENSION in this film was great!! I loved the ending too it was CREEPY and unexpected!!! The performances were very good too. i like the two leads. I also enjoy Tyler's RAPPING!!!
Yes sorry this movie was not scary and if you think otherwise you're probably very easy to scare.
It's time that M. Night got a visit. That was bad.
My biggest glaring issue was the super obvious Skype product placement. The shot was specifically designed to make sure the Skype logo was showing, and it really took me out of it for that scene. Overall though, pretty good movie. Called the ending half way through though. Was hoping I was wrong.
The Sixth Sense: A
Unbreakable: A+
Signs: A
The Village: C+
The Happening: F
The Visit: B+
Split: A
I've seen many horror movies from the shining to insidious and I have not been able to get scared what so ever by any of them. for some reason, the visit got me. it was the closest I ever got to being scared while watching a horror movie. other than the cheap panning back and forth camera move, the scares worked. after watching many many horror movies, this one got me
My thoughts exactly. The twist actually put my hair on end, I can't even remember the last horror movie I watched that managed to creep me out so much. I didn't care for the jumpscare when the old lady finds the camera in the living room, but hell...one jumpscare in a horror movie from 2015? I can deal with that. Didn't care for the panning shots when the girl is locked in the room with the old lady, didn't care for the old lady being under the bed and the girl sitting on top. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the movie, can't say the same for many horror movies these days.
Overdose Divided The twist and how it unfolded was really effective and clever. This film is underated
Overdose Divided I agree, the film really terrified me at times. hmm really? I loved the whole climax with the girl and the old lady, in a extremely outlandish way she was forced to accept herself and conquer her fear, because she thought she was ugly. Whereas the boy was afraid of taking action (and germs)..everyone gets caught up in the twist that they're not their grandparents that they fail to see the deeper meaning. That it was about these kids facing their fears and learning not to hold on to anger and resentment otherwise it will haunt them when they get older, and about accepting themselves and each other. For example at the beginning of the film the girl hated her brothers rapping..at the end, she didn't give a crap because she loved and accepted her brother for who he was..if he wanted to rap..then so be it.
Gallows, Unfriended, Lady in the water and The Forest. All in a row in the suggestions. That's a lot of thumbnail face close ups.
All girls, The top two of which, are crying. What a pattern.
The Cryptid Hunter the worst movies of 2015
this movie is awesome I scream like a girl 3 times in the movie..!!!realy creapy..!!
Erman Akgul It's good that you screamed of laughter! It's a comedy/horror :)
Ha you're a pussy This movie is not scary and if you are ever frightened by it you must be very easily to scare.
The diper in the kids face is a fair representation on how I felt watching this movie. I cant belive this dumpsterfire gets a pass. If this isnt M.Nightis worst, its at least his "I dont give a shit":iest films.
The m night to baseball comparison is pure gold.
You should watch wayward pines Chris its a mini series that shamalam directed and it's just finished recently.
That's meant to be really good as well.
Meh, for a "mini-series" I thought _Wayward Pines_ took way too long to just get to the point.
The early episodes kinda felt pointless, but..it had a decent twist.
I'm still mad about the ending of wayward pines. I wasn't too interested in the show when watching it but the ending was so frustrating! But, to go with Chris's analogy, I see it as the baseball player doing his physical therapy to train for the big event
M. only directed the pilot, he did serve as executive producer for the miniseries though
I honestly don’t see what people liked about this movie. Shit was so poorly made and the grandparents were anything but scary🥴
I gotta say, I really really like this movie, such a good movie.
But why?
Chris, I usually very much agree with your reviews, but a "B" for The Visit?... Did we see the same movie? Because I definitely didn't see the movie you did, the one I saw was about a D+
“You got a problem with germs don’t cha’”🥴
One of my all-time favorites -- it will stay on your mind long after you've watched it. I give it five out of five stars easy.
Chiseled Buff Daddy i recently watched it and thought it was a really good comeback for shyamalan. And you are absolutely right, after watching it i couldn't stop thinking about it for a couple of days. Really creepy movie imo
This film actually scared the SHIT out of me. Hard to do for a lot of movies, too, just certain scenes here really got me. Also I loved some of the psychological subtext, like how at the end (SPOILER) when the boy starts going off on the poppop imposter, beating him up, while yelling out football jargon, which paid off the earlier scene in which they were going at each other over their reasonings for being mad or not being mad at their dad. It wasn't incredible or anything, no sixth sense by any means, but I think that's why I liked it. The movie was simple, and even when it had those deep moments, it didn't try so hard, it just did what it did, and paid off what it had to.
Someone in comments casually ruined the movie for me.
who says "didn't you know - insert spoiler -? " ; of course I don't know!!!
:c
+Sarvesh Koyande Never look at comments for anything.
I totally agree with what you said about the unnecessary sound effects and the music that's just randomly thrown into the movie. I feel that same way about jump scares. I'm okay with a sudden loud noise happening in the film if something in the movie happened to make that noise. Ex. Someone is slowly walking through a dark kitchen and suddenly a pan falls on the floor. But if no event happened to make that noise like an ear piercing screech, then it's just randomly thrown in the movie. It doesn't make sense. It's just a lazy way to startle the audience. I'm okay with jump scares as long as they have a place in the film.
The scenes filmed under the vast porch were absolutely terrifying to me. The look on the old hag's face is still vivid to my memory!
You're starting to sound like a Shyamalan apologist. He used gimmicks like "jump-scares". At the end, the convenient placement and location of the cameras was too much to be believable. The kids are in danger of being killed, yet they somehow have the presence of mind to keep carting their cameras around with them? The contrived drama of the mother and how she has refused to see her parents ever again and go off on some bizarre retreat was just as laughable.
I thought I was the only one in this comments section that didn't see this movie for the pile of garbage that it is. If you have to keep placing sound effects over things then perhaps what you're showing Isn't actually scary And don't get me started on the attempts at humor.
Not gonna lie, this is perhaps my second favorite film of his after Unbreakable. It just worked so well and it literally (for me0 did not have a wasted shot, scene or involvement of the characters. I have given Shyamalan crap (rightfully so) in which he's made some mistakes and utter shit films, the worst is when he came off super arrogant about Last Airbender. That said, he uses his top game for this movie. I wasn't expecting a full on horror film and it's easily seen in the trailer and promotion of this film is that it is a suspenseful thriller and I believe he pulled it off. There have only been two found footage movies that I genuinely liked Quarantine (dotREC) and Chronicle, The Visit does found footage RIGHT! It's not a whirl of constant shaky cam with few (if any) compelling shots/scenes that do NOT allow you to get into the movie and scenes that follow. The reasoning for this being on camera is wonderfully done and I especially liked a moment in which the kids hide the camera to get some hidden footage.
I went in with a 50/50 expectation and believed I was either gonna sit through a good movie or a movie so bad it's laughably bad and I'm glad my expectations were knocked right out of the park :]. I loved the kids and their relationship with their mother, loved how they acted and was actually invested in who they are and for their safety. I mean, how many films can actually do that about children/child actors? It's SO easy to just toss in any kid and roll with it. The story behind the Grandparents was expertly done and def had me not only creeped out but very uncomfortable and claustrophobic at times. Much like Unbreakable and the characters presented here, we get a nice buildup of these characters and they became believable and lovable (well some ;D) and what's better is that there is no heavy hand holding of LOOOOOOONg exposition that have plagued a multitude of his films (Happening, Lady, Airbender etc0 where it feels like you're reading notes in-between script lines. I def give this an A. I was on board with it from the beginning and I was def satisfied through & through. So much that it's a def buy for me on Blu-ray :]
I guess nobody in the comments section can grasp the concept of what an opinion is.
It was surprisingly better than I went into thinking it would be. Great review, my sentiments about the movie exactly.
I would love to hear your thoughts on "Devil" M. Night wrote it but not directed it, but it is very much like his work. I think the story is fantastic and it fits into Night's style of writing.
the only part I liked about this movie was the old guy shoving his shitty diaper in the rapping boys face.
the funniest bit was when the old guy put shit on the boys face lol
just saw the movie. Its really good
Chris, I saw it last night and couldn't agree more with your analogy. I am a big fan of him and also have the enjoyment of living in Chester County, PA where most of his movies are filmed or somewhere pretty close...If he sticks to his roots, I think he can recover from AE & AB.
Just got from a midnight screening and it was good. Surprisingly funny and very entertaining. Spot on review Chris and M. Night is back guys
WHERE IS STAR WARS!?!?!
In a galaxy far away
+taylor asmah hahaha
4 months away
+ShanManTV I think he is referring to Chris's Star Wars review series.
Signs along side Sixth Sense and Unbreakable. as a ''winning the world series'' is just.... ugh. Signs was horrible
Bruh. This movie was str8 ass tho.
The way Chris said "Then, he quits entirely!" and the build-up to it for me dying. I laughed so hard. Chris, if you're reading this, I just want you to know that you are freaking GOLDEN.
He's back. M Night is finally back! :)
