- The Aira P-6 and I had some good times. But, I've realized that, as long as I have an MPC and Koala Sampler(plus other apps/programs), I'll rarely be compelled to create with it. This video outlines how I came to this conclusion, and gives a preview of a song I madden Koala Sampler. I also touch on my new spring reverb tank.

I think the case for an MPC is even less compelling now that Koala has become so capable. Those inherent limitations are actually key. As Akai marches toward a “DAW in a box,” tools like Koala-which cost next to nothing and run on virtually any device-are more appealing than ever.
A lot of the recent demand for groove boxes, especially during and after the pandemic, has been driven by hyper-consumerist influencers snatching up the latest gadget, showing it off, then letting it collect dust. But let’s not forget that minimalism in production birthed some of the greatest hip hop of all time. If the end result sounds the same and you’re having fun creating it, that’s what really matters. The rest is just noise.
Koala is a beast.
love the excitement that's evident in these videos. I get the same feeling when discovering new ways of doing things. keep these videos comin man!
Thank you sir! You know the feeling! Thankful to have music, which never loses its novelty 👊🏾
i actually had koala before i got the p-6. i was using koala to do the sampling, and acting as a sample library for the p-6. i had paid for koala to support the developer. great app.
You do you D! Personally, I'm still learning about the P-6, but the format works for me (also using the other Aira Compacts), so I've got familiarity with the layout, but will be also using with the SP404. Happy Thanksgiving!!
great recap
Im trying this. Thanks man. Hope u having a happy thanksgiving
Happy Thanksgiving! Let me know what you think of it.
@@dreadwardbernaysSo far I'm impressed. I bought the full version. Can't wait to get to my studio to try more.
It's also on android. That's what I'm using.
Happy Thanksgiving. Great point and I appreciate your thoughts on the subject.
Id just keep it man! Its not expensive and you can use it to lofi your samples into koala over USB-c. Its worth leaving around and seeing what kinda updates come around imo. If it collects a lil dust that’s ok, it’ll come in handy from time to time
But if you want a hardware koala, that lets you set loop length per pad to sample in, grab that sp404 mk2!!!
You might be right. It’ll be around, until I grab the SP404 mkii. But I feel like it won’t get much use. Koala Sampler is just too easy, and has a bit more features. You never know though.
@@dreadwardbernaysi pass everything back and forth between my sp and koala. Perfect drums
Dope man!!! 🔥🔥
11 days without a video is not fair bro
Been busy with skate stuff. Anxious to make some music.
I'm going to check this out. I too like the P6 but I find it so convoluted and tedious that I keep neglecting doing any real deep dives needed to really learn the thing. I just find it easier to go to other tools to achieve somewhat similar results. Let me know what you get for the P6. I may sell mine too. Thanks man!
Exactly what happened to me. I learned enough to get going, and the incentive to dive deeper just wasn’t there. Too many button combos, and 4-letter names to remember. The surface level workflow fun though.
@@dreadwardbernays I may keep mine for a quick sound editor and rhythm pattern creator to quick dump back into Logic Pro but I don't think I'll ever be really "composing" on it like the marketing has everyone believing it's wicked easy to do. Ah well, not a total loss I suppose.
Badass happy Thanksgiving bro
Thank you! Happy Thanksgiving!!!
On koala sampler and koala fx all the time ….just bought a Roland P6 today, the effects and granular synthesis, gonna have resampling orgy between these two … bringing loops from koala into P6 and vice versa is going to be fun .
That could be really fun. I might have to try it myself.
p6 or ep133? I had the 133 but sold it because of the lack of song mode. I did like the immediacy of it tho.
Old iPad with a bunch of apps like AUM, koala, king of FM. You have plenty of free FXs and synths
Wait until you find AUM and the whole iOS music production scene. You have more power on your phone than on your MPC
Got Koala, have PO33KO!, Liven Loft-12 , had Volca Sample... now waiting for P-6. I must say that each of them is unique. I use KOALA for longer samples and basic composition, LOFI-12 is kind of rompler, PO33KO! is often on drum duty (punch-in fx are amazing) and VOLCA SAMPLE was some strange wavetable synth after Pajen firmware (i miss that one). I canot use any of them other way around. Probably some large workstation like MPC ONE will do it all but i dobt if it will be as mobile and straight like on any of those. I risked and bought P-6, hope it will work for me. THX for honest opinion!
I just use both happy Thanksgiving, bro
Happy Thanksgiving!
NICE VID
I was about to upload a koala beat just now, I’ll check this out first lol, the new update added a midi out track which is handy!
Koala is so sick! Whenever I’ve been away from it, and pick it back up, I’m surprised at how much it does, and how easily you can get going.
I really hope that Roland will make backing up n bring patterns/samples easier than now. P-6 seams great for just fooling around with samples but no projects on the device is serious limitation. Hope that backing up the device will be easier in the manual. Rebooting P-6 for every sample bank and patterns look just annoying.
Koala Sampler is on Android. I use it a lot and it works well.
That’s awesome. A lot of developers neglect Android.
I got an SP404 and P6 as I hate Koala, not because its a bad app, on the contrary its amazing. I just loath iPhone, Ipad or any touch screen devices.
Koala is a steal! Period. But if you not having fun..
I understand that. The MPC is the perfect combo for me. Has the touchscreen. But also a button for nearly every function. The P-6 is good. That tiny screen, and the button combos just get to me sometimes.
the fact that koala is SO capable is why i get pissed at companies that make little way-overpriced devices that can only do a FRACTION of what these apps can do. and koala can run fine on a $100 phone. so, there's no reason to charge $200, $400, etc, for very limited mini synths... the fact that the aira p-6 doesn't have a song mode is ridiculous.
Have you tried SP404 km2???? ( lmao you just mentioned it) wow lol ok😅
android's downfall with music apps is the latency. since android runs in a virtualized java machine, there's an inescapable latency that's NOT very musical
3:22 IMO step sequencers only make sense for drums, tonal stuff should be played in like an instrument
Koala is very over hyped.
You should elaborate
Koala is fast to create and makes your imagination go wild that's what you want when you're out there 😊
Precisely!
