    A donkey would help with the coyotes. They are great guardians.

      Negatives, donkeys are hay burners and most will also stomp all dogs. Would be awful if Teddy or the LGD got killed by it, our Best Friens have had a donkey for 15 years as a pet and he knows all their dogs but will still go after to stomp and kill them...not to mention, having to move a donkey around would be a hassel.

    A miniature donkey is just Gideon's size....they are great watch dogs...a little Nepolitanistic they belive size is a figment of your imagination....and cuteness over flow...easy keepers..not really requiring any extra, easily over fed.....a bit noisy...but you learn to listen, they usually have a good reason...announcing something different going on....a visitor arriving a preditor near ect. Much like a goose, or a barking dog... Pick out a pre-gentled one for kids, that will allow their feet picked up, lead ect. No bite... be picky...it could be like winnie as a gaurdian. They can be like a big dog as a pet...cheap at the auction...if he wants a donkey he may Love a miniature one. They are easy keepers. I don't recommend riding right off....they could run off with them. It depends on how trained they are. But they can be trained to pull a cart ect...

      If one gets an animal such as a horse, donkey etc. that are actually expensive pets, one must be dedicated to caring for it for it's lifetime. Not get it on a whim without the dedication to keeping and treating it properly. The get and then get rid of once one tires of it is ridiculous and not a behavior that is in the best interest of the animal. . JGiles

    • @lorellstoneman74
      @lorellstoneman74 Год назад

      It's a great lesson for kids to have responsibility for something they wanted....but also re-homing a miniature donkey can be the best thing that happened to the donkey...So it need not be a lifetime commitment if the children out grow him, however he is still useful as a guard donkey...Many times it is an up grade from their last home, and a joy to his next owner....We got one from the auction, and he was perfectly happy to take on his new home with gusto, and was always a joy. You can learn a lot from a self sufficient, fearless, miniature donkey...just take life one day at a time, look for the next best thing, and warn others of danger. Lessons from Cecil.

    They are right. 5-10 acres really is a sweet spot.
    We have 20, and we’re comfortably using 15.
    The back 5ish acres is all coastal. Produces aprox 130 large round bales(not sprayed) a year (3 cuttings). We’ve been able to use bales to build our animal herd by trading, etc. And small profit and plenty of hay for our Florida “winter”.
    The mid section has our home and it’s completely surrounded by 1.5acre fenced rotational paddocks.
    Front 5 acres we haven’t yet touched although it is cleared. We just ordered 2000ft of polywire to extend rotation Al grazing up front.
    I can count on two hands how many trees our entire 20 acres has, including citrus, avacado, etc.
    One thing, I wish we had chicken tractors.

    One of the reasons I subscribed to this channel is that I realized that it provides access to a community of active "homesteading" farms. It helped me to define homesteading as a biopartnership of symbiotic relationships between land, animals, and humans. The goals while looking for land is to envision the possible equations/balances that are available to begin with and how they can develop.
    The experiences of the community help define this in actions that can produce the best results.
    Just random, rambling thoughts.

    • @caitlinr9874

      That’s actually why Sean and Beth breed their jerseys with Dexter. So they have cows with a lower center of gravity that can get around better on the steeper grade.

Wow, these Doughertys are wonderful. Amazing what they can do with any property. I love how they can use the steep pastures too. The beets and turnips for fodder is a great idea. You got a good tip Justin, let the cows have access to the woods too. I am so impressed by this couple. We have almost 10 acres and it's good to hear that that size is a good one. Nice pig set-up and the waterers for the cows are great. It's so cute how Gideon wants a donkey and some ducks now. Wow, wood fired pizza! You guys are eating good! Thanks for this great video.

    Mr Brown, suggest to papa to fence off an area with a creek for Ducks. Cattle panels at the entrance/exit of the creek and you can move them up and down the creek. It keeps relatively clean being free flowing water!

    • @lorellstoneman74
      @lorellstoneman74 Год назад +1

      Make sure the duck creek does not flow into your pond or water source for other animals. Ducks love to dabble in water and prefer shallows, with green shoots to nibble. They really do not need a big pond. A tiny creek to drink from and explore with fresh running water, is better than an 8' dug out pond that quickly turns to polluted mud and green water. Or you can set up a rain gutter system for them to dring from that flushes itself off the roof of their shed....or... Moving them often helps....consider an easy fencing system. A shelter with fresh straw for protection from cold and storms...(varmet proof) that is secure and you can lock them up at night. It only needs to be duck tall with room to move but snuggle together to keep warm..I had one 8 ft. Long by 2 ft. Wide by 20 inches tall raised with 1 brick hieght. To lift off ground......with air gaps across front where the doors across the front were hinged to drop down for ramps to go in and out....the entire front had these doors so you could drop 1 or 2 or all of them to clean out...replace straw often or at least add a dry layer each night.... empty often...they were happy to go in at night. They did not have water inside but were put in at dusk and let out early...during nesting season you can section off with dividers to make nest boxes.

    We have Long horns and they have got down going down hill and can't get back up. This is not the right land for that kind of Cow. People don't think about it when they bring into this mountain area. We got off someone else. We didn't bring here. They need be out west. They like brush better than grazing grass. By the way it's strange we call a brush hog a bush hog machine. Just area we are from. You live two states down from us
