It is refreshing to see a man who strives to involve his kids as much as possible in his life. As a medical student and a father of two, I have been ridiculed by doctors for not waiting to start my family because they would “get in the way of my progress”. I have found that so profoundly against my experience as a father. They add so much more meaning and joy to my life. Stay strong brother and keep doing great.

I thought I wanted to wait till I was 25 to have kids didn't work out add 10 more yrs to that was when I had my first child. Any age is always at some kind of odds at 35 I was just starting life in my career finally able to afford my life. Life isn't easy any decisions we make but I wish I was younger cause I was exhausted to spend time with my boy on my days off. Who knows what it could of been like if I did have them younger!

Your comment made me realize that this is happening with Lily, though they do at least taker her to lessons. But let me tell you, if I grew up on a farm and STILL couldn't have a horse, it would be unforgivable. Yes, they need more/different care than the cows or sheep do, but a true horse girl wouldn't have it any other way.

One of the best purchases we have ever made was an ASV skid steer with a forestry mulcher. It's very versatile and very strong. It can easily handle your feed deliveries with the fork attachment. Mine is a PT100 and is, in my opinion, safer for the kids to drive than the tractor b/c it's is fully enclosed. It also handles our steep grades quite well. ~Mrs. C in Virginia (yes MRS. Its good you have a plan. When we had our woods (47 1/2 acres) and farm (40+ acres with 8 acres of woods) many years ago, Dad sharpened the chainsaws, and we adult boys did the falling and processing the trees. We always had sharp saws. Both woodlots are better today because Dad demanded that we manage the wood by only cutting the bad trees and trees harming others around them. Never clear cut. Management promoted wildlife at the same time helped the farm animals.

Thinning is what I have known it as, I enjoyed running yarder on thinning jobs. Clear cuts made running the machine to repetitive but you got a great view. I personally prefer thinned woods as you will get more mass out of your tree's and you'll have a constant supply if you keep it up.

Great job. What a nice full day of life on the farm. You got so much done. Just by saying; we have 30 minutes, what can we do?
The three things I took out of that question is:
    1) time - don't waste it or let it slip away.
    2) we- included others
    3) work/ achievement. Put your hand to the plow and do something. It makes you feel good. You just might create a new homestead. 🌞

You brought up a great point about the days that you don’t get to further your homestead project due to the hurdles or obstacles that slow you down. It’s daily life. If it was easy, we could all do it. But then where would we be? It’s hard enough to have our younger generation apprentice the things they have in life. If we show them that life itself is not easy, that we have to work for our rewards, then we would spend more time doing, and less time wanting.
This video to me was very much the right video to post. It shows that things happen good or bad, and you have to meet them head on, and then you can move forward to your goals.
Your family really does a lot in a day’s time, and it’s impressive what each child brings to the family in ideas, work, and just being themselves. You guys should be VERY proud of how you are raising and keeping a family unit together.
Always ready to see another video!

What you're taking about is called raker on the chain it's kinda like setting the depth of the cut and also a vise is a must you can clamp the bar and use your chain break then rotate. I'd also recommended to tighten the chain, then loosen it back off after your done filling I find this helps kept the angle of your file. My rules to people using chainsaws on my crew was the saw can cut two things wood and people usually after they put it in the dirt.

Cream day! That's a great mower train! So cute! That garage door is very heavy! Don't run it off the tracks! It was good you visited the Doughertys because they taught you about pastures that could be steep and that you could give the cows some access to woods too. Love Henry's little sing song while he rides on your back. You have to edit these videos too because Dan is still on assignment. So sorry to hear that Kubota didn't give you another year of sponsorship. I'm glad you got to use the tractor for that last time to move the 2000 lbs of corn! Can Lucky help you out? Flossy is sooo sassy! I like the idea of getting the machine and using it to clear the land and then still having it afterwards. So glad that Jonah is in good spirits. I hope his PT goes well. That's a great sharpening tool! Thanks for the link! Wow, Lily, that's a wonderful lunch you made! Yay, Mark to the rescue! I love my little electric smoker. Yay, Randolf fixed the poopy egg problem in the pretty shaw. Wow, Randolf will build a whole new mobile milking station. I sure hope the new one can be pulled by Sally the side by side. Justin, I have 75 acres in Mississippi and I did The Who chainsaws clearing for about 10 min before a neighbor saved my life. Find someone and trade em for some advertising and have them bring in a skid steer with a drum mulcher and they can clear that 10 acres in a week. Since you only need a couple acres you would come out very cheap and those stumps will never bother you again

Watching y’all cut down those Rhododendrons is painful BUT I see they’re all over the hillsides so, I guess in this instance they’re more like a nuisance. I was wondering though, Rhododendrons are expensive to buy for landscaping, would it be possible to “harvest” those big bushes to sell? Watching a plant grow to a large size is fun & satisfying but placing a large bush gives an instant feeling of old worldness or old growth that’s not easy to come by. And it’s in keeping with your ideas to turn a profit in new ways.

I have a few sugestions / improvment that you can make on your farm.
First off all for Lucky. You need to have a convertions / qucik change plate made for it. Basicly a plate that look like the back of your tractor bucket.
But on the other side ther is skid stere female actachment points. Then you will be able to use all kinds of atachment plus that its quick change. I have made a few of them in my time. Just remeber to be mindfull of the angel.
    Next
Try to paint the inside of one or the sides of the eeg baskets on the pretty shaw. That way when the baskets are turned in the eavning. You can see from a distance if it has been done.
Because the outside of the baskets will macths the white paint.
For the milk shaws draw bar. That should be a shalow triangel. Mabye with a renforcement. Ii know not everybody can weld and it should either be stainlees ore galevised.
But if your a allready investing a significant sum in lu,ber, mabe do the steel part right too.
Mabye you should build at a dock fore your pound before it fill with water
    Keep up the good work.

Justin I think it's just real talk to show all the obstacles. Anyone who is trying to build a homestead is going to have obstacles. Most people will be working an off-farm job or jobs and trying to get the things done. Everyone has the everyday stuff that has to get done, cooking, cleaning, caring for the family, etc. So it's just real to show how you work in starting a project from scratch while you're trying to juggle all the existing stuff.

That Ford is a good tractor! Have the loader adapted for quick attach! I have a 2wd 4610 and had to replace the injector pump and injectors. It's back to being reliable. If you get a skid steer, the attachments can be interchangable. My dad had an oversized starter put on it.

Kubota should have given you a special offer to buy the year old used equipment! In my opinion that would have been a better advertisement than taking the used items all away.

On the steeper or eroding hill sides try a little taressesing. .put the small trees like fence posts to form a wall put branch brush behind it add soil or your deep bedding. Have flat land just sweat labor

Justin! Put wheels on your milk stanchion!!! They make them where you step on a lever and raise and lower the wheels! Also, instead of going straight up the hill, you zigzag your way up. (Pulling from each end alternating when changing directions.)

Just a suggestion you could just staple chicken wire to the flat boards in the top and that would keep them from being able to fly up there. Also, for the tracked skid steer look at lightly used. If taken care of a used model will still get you a lot of use for your needs just as much as a new one since your not using it commercially like it's designed for.

Remember most new homesteaders are learning and must figuring out the obstacles in their way. Your main obstacle is running your present homestead while creating a new one with all the problems that spring up in both. Good luck and God Bless your whole family. May he guide those that help along the journey.

I think you could drastically reduce the weight of the milk sled by swapping out your wood braces for tension cables. When done right they're much stronger than wood, and exponentially lighter.

love you’re content can’t wait to transfer my family farm too a more sustainable pasture. The part of the chain is called rakers they control the depth of your cut so the more you take off the more aggressive your cut is but be careful how much you take off I take mine down after 3 sharpings. God bless you and your family.

Track loader is nice but don't forget about upkeep, diesel fuel, and repair. Ever pop a track off? Or break a hydraulic line? It can get costly. Plus the cost of learning the operation against an experienced operator. Excited for the future of your channel. 🖒😎

As you look at machinery you might want to see what brands the local rental places can supply. A track loader can have all kinds of tools on it, but you don't need to OWN all the tools, you just need to USE the tools. Rentals can save you bucks and headaches.

You could add chicken wire or hardware cloth to the frame of your roof acting the same as your regular chick shaw making it so the chickens can’t use that space to jump up on the nest box. You essentially just block off the a frame part of the roof by adding it to the frame that lifts up.

Hey Justin, you can somewhat straddle your chainsaw if you dont have a vise nearby. It’s a little less annoying to file than trying to hold the bar or something else.

I hope Lilly's hand is ok. I was watching someone with a chainsaw, when he had finished with it he gave what I thought was a bit of good advice, always sharpen the chainsaw at the end of the day so that it was ready to go when you needed it next.

    Go Jonah!
Everyone thinks that homesteaders and farmers, get to take it easier once the crops are done…nope. That’s when the barn gets organized, the equipment gets a full service for next year, all the little nagging projects start to be addressed.
I’m with you on the outsides chores. I want to finish clearing my garden and put it to bed until next spring, but we are organizing the garage first.
Just keep ticking those boxes, Justin. You’ll get to a place of rest. Love y’all!
