You may want to consider running a piece of aluminum tape in the trench. You may know where it is now, but five years from now it might be hard to find. Put in the metal tape so you can use a metal detector to find the line.

Happy Mother’s Day. The moment Lily said she was tired, I knew she was sick. Kudos toJonah and Josiah for hands on learning from their role model, they are mastering the homestead. Gideon likes chores only if they are in they are in the lens of being playful.
Lily is a preteen, she needs special attention among all the males in the family.

I love how Justin talks to his children like they are equals when in the field or pasture or on the mountain talking about water lines etc…. He talks openly and allows them to tell him things they notice on the funtion of anything on their land….. the kids know certain routines of certain animals and Justin listens…. Love it!!!
I love Justin's attitude about giving attention to his children. His patience with Henry is so incredible. I didn't have that kind of father and I believe I suffered for it. It wasn't all his fault because his dad didn't set the example for him. These children will not forget the example both parents set for them and will be there for them as they get older as well as doing the same for their own children.
I love how you let your children tell you what should be done. This is truly a fantastic parent. I love all your children like they were my grandbabies. A suggestion, plz look into bringing Jonah to U OF M for his hip. I bet they could help. God bless you all.
Thank you for the extended edition of the Justin Rhodes family homestead show. I was so surprised that you showed the whole process of the gravity feed water system. If you hold the chickens by the feet upside down, they will calm down. And it doesnt hurt them. Its amazing how everything is so green all of a sudden. Jonah loves those big machines, lol. Henry is getting so big.

You can insulate the pipes before you lay them down. That way you won’t have to worry about frozen lines! It’s best to follow Salatin’s layout in the long run. I really admire y’all! You’re hard working good people. What a beautiful family! God bless y’all ❤️🙏🏼
Gideon, over these last months I've seen you step up and contribute sooo much, helping the family, thinking ahead on how you can fix problems, taking initiative and doing things before being asked, and of course, being an amazing big brother to Henry! If you're worried about the water lines freezing use compressed air to blown them out for winter. Many sprinkler systems are designed to be winterized this way.
Homesteading is all about self sufficiency & you are crushing it! Jonah is a doer not a talker. And Gideon is a true team player. Hope Lily feels better! My pardnts had 4 kids & only 1 (me) would gelp them out in old age.

Your sons are close to being able to being able run that farm. Its amazing… with influences like uncle Joe Saladin and obviously good old dad I really think these kids are going to be stars in the regenrative movement. Whatevr they choose to do, up to them… but really awesome examples of young men. Total Permaculture rock stars imo!!

Re: Your water piping issues. Put them at least 4 inches below frost line. Regarding valves and T Points Think about just getting some 12" plastic culvert pipe and cut them into bits that will reach down from ground level to your T points and valves. Cap them with a overlapping wooden lid. Use a square form with arms extending outward from the center but cutoff before they would exceed your 12" circumference of the culvert pipe.Flip this over and those arms would help keep it in place over the culvert pipe. Paint them a bright color for easy visibility. This gives you access and yet will help keep the joints and valves safe from damage. Oh You will need to fill the pipe with either actual insulation or hay filling it up to keep them from from freezing during winter weather.

When our home was built the electrical lines after laid were filled about 6” the whole length then a layer of crushed rocks were laid the entire line length. After that the trench was filled. This gives future dig an indication to stop and dig by hand from there. It prevents future line damages. Has worked well for when the lines need to be exposed. The same method was used for water.
I love your videos. Your editting is sublime. You pack more in an hour than most. Your family is amazing. Smart, practical and inventive kiddos like their parents. I do tip my hat to the CEO ...Henry. Always present and choses wisely hands on or off as required. Love yall...keeping it real.

Great Work. In the Midwest USA, North of Kentucky, the trench would have to be much deeper because of the frost line. Still taping into a spring and delivering water to a lower area is still possible if the source, piping, and destination are all protected from the weather.

in the fall you can blow out the line and then just leave valve open and you should not have a problem

Use Diatomaceous Earth to de-worm goats. Sprinkle it on their feed every day. DE also greatly reduces the parasite load in pastures w/o all the chemicals. Make sure the equipment, goats udder, the goats are healthy (given clean feed & forage). Also keep milking hands as clean as possible, plus the milk is strained and chilled asap, the milk (under refrigeration) will stay fresh & tasty for a number of days - w/o pasteurization.

Rebecca did you look into equine therapy for Jonas hip that strengthens your core,posture and flexibility and can take some pressure off his hip? Just an idea
Justin, next time you go to the hardware store get yourself a couple of water pressure gauges. The plastic ones with female 3/4-in hose fitting are only about 15 bucks and will screw onto the end of a garden hose, or right on a hose faucet.
To keep your water pressure under 100 psi, you need a pressure reducing valve for about every 200 ft of elevation drop.
Also, I suggest you stick a T-post or some kind of marker in the ground next to every connection (before you bury the water line). And/or mark all of their locations on your giant topo map. Those connections are probably where you're going to have future problems. So it would be nice to be able to easily find and check them in the future (even if it's just so you know not to hit when doing any future digging or grading). Or so you know where to dig to install frost proof yard hydrants.
My first bike was 26 inches. I never did grow into it. I leaned on the seat for a couple of years. I’m 5’3” still would be too big. You took what you got.
Plasson quick coupler and valve. It’s Greg Judy’s watering system. Easy disconnect below frost line and easy connection!
If you made some 2x4 slides with metal plates that overhang the raised beds you could slide the chickens to the next bed instead of lifting it.

I lost a much loved Ram Lamb, last night. Lack of knowledge.. He got a belly full of fresh grass after months of lean picking and just hay. He bloated. I wasn't aware of that danger. Just remember that, when teaching about and dealing with sheep!!
