I’ve owned an EV for about 18 months now and can share some tips: 1) There’s a display setting on your Dash that can show the true efficiency rate while driving (displayed in mi/kWh). Typically, anything over 3.5 mi/kWh is pretty good. Over time, you would take your avg mi/kWh and multiply it by the useable battery capacity to get a better estimate (ex. 3.5 mi/KWh x 81 KWh = 283 mi avg range). Of course, your avg mi/KWh will greatly vary depending on many factors- driving style, driving modes, AC, temp of battery, up hill/down hill, wheel size, tire pressure, etc… 2) The “Guess-O-Meter” range really takes into account the avg mi/KWh over the last few driving sessions. Some cars looks at more or less driving sessions. This is why you will see your “range” fluctuate so greatly. 3) For everyday (non long trip) driving, keep charge only between 20-80% to preserve battery life. You’re also Charging most efficiently only up to 80%. Anything after that will be at a much slower rate. 4) Charging stations- Note there are different types of chargers (AC and DC) and rates of charging (Level 1, 2, DC ‘slow’, DC “fast” rates). When looking for public chargers, you’ll typically want to avoid anything under 7-9 KWh charging, unless it’s an emergency, bc those will be super slow (hours). Those are seen more at hotels and corporate parking lots for all day/over night charging. Some apps will show you what type of chargers (and availability) at each charging stations. 5) The chargers with the two outlet “pumps” are just meant to accommodate cars with ports on either left or right side. You can’t use both pumps at the same time.
Hi. Just watched your 700+ Road Trip video. I ordered a BMW iX last month. One thing I have seen, using the Electrify America chargers, once you hit 30 minutes. Stop the charge then. Finish the charge cycle. If you need more “juice”, start another 30 minute free charging. I’ve seen a lot If videos that state that. ENJOY YOUR NEW i4.
So, I just sold my 2014 BMW i3 with range extender and picked up a 2018 BMW 640i GT. I LOVED yes, LOVED my i3! It handles like a slot car, was surprisingly roomy inside. A $4000 repair bill is what facilitated the change. If I could have afforded the i4, I would have. I commute 50 miles daily and it cost $35 per month in electricity. I have a level two charger at work, so they picked up half the charge. I topped of the gas in the 640 and it was $56! Although I have had many gasoline and diesel vehicles in my life, but will be going back to EV when possible. Good luck, I hope you enjoy, but right now EVs are not for everybody.
This was great! Really helpful to see a real world experience charging an i4 on a long road trip. Impressed with the up to 80% charging speed, which is more than enough to go another couple hundred miles or so and charge again for a pee break or whatever. Congrats on this beautiful new car! ⚡️
Great user research. Here's a funny story, I recently had an issue with my 135i. I had my car towed to the local BMW dealership and they were able to confirm a fuel contamination issue from when I bought some gas at a Circle K. The dealership offered to loan me an i4 (the base model) and I totally jumped at the opportunity. At this point, I had only done some basic research beforehand about living with an EV so some of what you experienced wasn't unexpected. I tend to keep a journal of when I get gas to track the date, quantity, and trip odometer but I had to modify my data entries to accommodate start / stop time, percentage, and range for the couple of days I had the car. Also, we weren't set up to do any home charging other than using a 110v outlet. But, even then, I appreciated that convenience of being able to charge at the house. Eventually I got my 135i back but appreciated the opportunity to officially drive an electric car, especially a Beemer! I have a Stage 1 tune and some other mods on my 135i so the base i4 didn't really compare, peformance-wise, other than off-the-line acceleration. However, when it's time for a new car (my 135i has over 180k) I'm totally going to consider a good used i4 M50, if one's available. We use our Honda Odyssey for long road trips but I think an electric car just might be in our future. Looking forward to a life of supercapacitors ^_^
To own a electric car is in the beginning a little confusing but when you get use to it it’s absolutely fantastic. When the gas is so expensive there’s nothing cheaper and in my case I have solar panels on my house and technically drive my car for free. In a good day I make 115 kWh, don’t know how you do in the states but in Europe they are very common. Great video and I felt exactly the same first time as a beginner with my electric car Volvo XC 40.
Enjoyed the video. True first time EV experience. Y’all probably already figured a lot out but my two cents: For road trips, try to reach the charger with a lower state of charge (10-20%) for faster charging. Above 80% charging slows to protect the battery. Better Route Planner and PlugShare are two must have apps. And Peanut M&Ms all the way!
Fun to watch but here are two tips for you from a fellow EV owner… never judge range by miles always use percentage. Never charge above 80% on the road trips. The last 20% takes forever. Love your choice in cars. I have a model Y performance and once you learn the tricks you’ll love EV road-trips!! Have fun!!

I've been using an i3 as a commuter for a while now, and you'll notice that the range does vary day-by-day. Obvious things like driving style, A/C, and heat will cause noticeable fluctuations; though, outside conditions play a heavy hand as well. You likely won't see it much during the warmer months, but this winter you'll see a noticeable dip in range dependent on the outside temp. I'm sure it'll be garage kept (which will help), but just proves to show there's a lot of variables calculated into that range figure.

Great video! I have an X3M and can get 400-ish miles of highway range. The thought of having HALF that range, with the prospect fewer gas stations and non-functional gas stations terrifies me. I do a lot of day trips, for e.g. this weekend I might drive out about 150 miles to do a bike ride, then drive back. Electrify America has NOTHING; ChargePoint has one station with 2 L2 ports... so this is why I'm sticking with delicious gasoline for awhile...
I used to do 800-900 mile trips each way 2-4 times a month between 2014 and 2018 so I totally get it! Now I mostly stay in town that has chargers everywhere. My longest trips now are 150 miles each way, which has a charging station halfway in between. I think charging stations will become more ubiquitous as gas stations in a few more years.

The estimate range is based on you drove it last, like an ICE car. If you reverse math your 1st trip, it would have indeed been 300+ miles of range, above the EPA, which is incredible. Also it's typical for charging to be slower after 80%.
So in other words, expect to multiply your travel times by 3 or 4? It took you guys 2 days to travel 640 miles. On my N55 X5 it takes me 7-8hrs to travel that distance.
So you spent like 40 bucks, after all the free charging. Imagine if you didn't get free charging. A 328d would get you around 750 miles on a single tank for 75$ that it costs to fill it up at 5$ a tank at the moment. Plus all the money you had to spend on hotel, snacks, walmart, food, and all that stuff that you had to spend because you had to wait for those recharges. Here's some rounding: Hotel $150 Food let's say you ate 5 times in the 2 day trip for 2 people, $40 x 5 = $200 Let's say another $50 for snacks and walmart How much you make an hr? Cause you wasted a lot of hrs... That's $400 for a 7 hr of driving trip When it's less than $75 on a 328d, and $40 if you stop for a break at 3 or 4 hrs of driving Aaaaaand, 8 hrs vs 2 days to get to your destination That's pretty terrible in my opinion.

(Btw, In my many years of road trips, that I can remember, not one Walmart stop was made along the way for any reason. Hmmm, something is starting to stink...subliminal advertising? Hope all the tubers are getting paid!) Range, charge times, charging locations, and quantities of chargers at each location HAVE to improve...and FAST, as verrry soon there will be a ton of EVs on the road, and the line/wait time to charge will be a nightmare (possibly hours!?). On a positive note, the I4 appears to be a great vehicle. Not a bad commuter car, for sure!!
They chose to spend the night. A 650 mile trip in the I4 would only add a little over an hour for charging stops. Less than that if you stop to eat in your internal combustion engine car.
14:49 most new cars use your driving habits to estimate your range. The range can change from different driving sessions. Drive conservatively and the number will go up or drive fast and the estimated range will go down.
Cool video. I had to laugh at the tiptoeing and air quoting about M cars. It always cracks me up by how touchy people get and how some need to tell everyone what qualifies as an M car and what doesn’t. The only entity that really gets to make that definition for us is BMW. 😬 Regardless of how much you feel like your specialness is taken away; if BMW puts an M on the car, it’s an M car. 🤷♂️ Sorry. If you have the M3 or M5 or whatever single digit M, you have the pinnacle of M in that series. And that’s awesome! If you have an M340i or i4 M50 or whatever BMW whips up, it’s still an M car. There are just others available that are even more M. 😂
Looks good; some of the questions you had, you’ll quickly get - like kilowatts per 100 miles. The i4 has a battery with about 80kw. Not sure why some people think it looked like a hassle. Looking forward to never having to go to a gas station again…. especially in NJ.
I own one, I drive from Portland to Tacoma and back often. I use Eco Pro and average 70 mph and I go from 100 % to be about 40% SoC. It's only 130 miles though. But haven't done a longer trip yet where I'll need to charge.
The full range is different each time you fill because it changes according to your avg mpg! Your m3 should do the same thing as my m340i also does the same each time I fill
There’s an app called “a better route planner” that can not only optimize by distance but by charging speed too - since maximum charging speed is dependent on how much charge you have left (more charge = can’t charge at full rate, etc)
Top electric car tip, ignore the range in miles and only use the percentage. The percentage is truth as it’s what’s left in the battery and the the miles is based on driving patterns etc etc

I have an I4 edrive40 and a Tesla Model Y and yes it is confusing but 5 minute research should have set you up for a better experience (i blame the dealer) but you guys still made it. If my wife would have seen this kind of video before we bought our first EV, no way she would have agreed to the deal ...lol but good video anyway, keep it up.
Interesting video to see 1st timers. Not sure if those comments are appreciated. You are much better off to only look for EA chargers even if you would have to pay for. Since they are free I definitely would restrict myself to those. If you go to other brands filter for at least 150kw and look for at least two charging stalls as you don’t want to show up and someone else is charging.
Courageous of you to start that journey with what seemed liked total ignorance of the usable battery capacity for your car (80.7 kWh), how the guessometer functions, and charging curves. It seemed like you were learning along the way, but then you took that final long charge to 100% for no clear reason. As we have an i4 eDrive 40 on order, it was reassuring to see yet another video confirming that this is an efficient platform.
The range estimate is based on your driving style, it’s just like filling up my 2019 440i, if I drove it nicely for a week it’ll say 390 miles till empty when filled. If I bashed it for a week it’ll say 250 miles till empty when filled. However all the electronics including AC, Audio, Power Windows, Lighting, and ancillary electronics will eat your battery unlike in a gas car where your range is not dependent on that😢👌🏽 I wish I got my i4 M50 I had ordered to extend my 440i lease an additional 6 months. Then I ended up buying the 440i after the 6 month lease extension.
Mileage is definitely calculated by how you drive, just like with a gas car. You're driving all highway, so, at a decent speed, it's going to be higher. And after owning over 20 brand new cars, the first few tanks of gas, are always off. So, the charging of the car is going to be the same.
In an EV, all highway will yield LOWER efficiency. In town I can get 5.5 - 6.0 mKh (Nissan Ariya, summertime). Highway use gets me 3.3 - 4.0. Battery will regenerate in town, extending range, highway gives virtually no opportunity to regenerate.
Great video and congrats! I picked mine up this week and haven’t received the email for Electrify America. I called the dealer and they are not familiar with the process. How long did it take for yours to come in?
Home chargers are all level 2 chargers, which will charge the vehicle from dead to full in 9-10hrs. These level 2 chargers are 240V, level 1 ones are 120v and would take over 24hours to charge the same amount. The car comes with a mobile level 2 charger that will adapt down to level 1 with the 110v attachment. These fast chargers are level 3 DC chargers.
I never thought about what If all the spots are taken and you gotta wait 30 to 45 just to wait another 30 to 45. And the chargers die. Idk it’s nice but still a tough sell tho. The car is hella nice tho. Prolly not for impatient ppl.
Better strategy to charge less, drive faster, charge more often. This way you can get your average speed around 60 mph (including charge stops!)because empty battery charges a lot faster
My E90 tells me a different "distance til empty" every time I fill my car up, and so does every other gas car I've ever owned. So it seems par for the course lol.

I know this is months old, but I’m just seeing it. The miles are the battery capability, but the wheels you have make it worse. So in 18’s it’ll do 312, 19’s it’ll do 270 miles. I’m assuming you got 20’s which brings is down to 220ish.
Hello nice video, So for BMW 2 year free charging Electrify America, Does it mean Free 30mins Per day?? Using Level 2 Charger 20-80% 30mins of time? The Charger says 0.43$ per kWh.... BMW i4 have 83.9 kWh...So that's like 36$ USD to charge 270 miles. Gas Car probably 60$ So you save 24$ per charge...and the Electric car just ridiculous Expensive now...I guess you are NOT saving money to go GREEN energy
$21 for 80% and you need to stop 3 times to charge.. if you drove with a gas powered car of that size you would need about 1 and 3/4ths of full tanks.. so doesn’t that mean it’s basically the same cost for the trip whether you’re going electric vs gas? I mean the numbers are pretty darn close. So the only upside is.. you’re not polluting; however, even if you took all the cars off the road the amount of co2 emitted per year would only decrease by about 1/6th if that. The biggest polluters are caused by industry.. so while we are all paying huge costs for battery cars.. industry basically hasn’t done shit to move the needle yet 🎉
Hmmm I'm not sure how efficient this is... I bought a 2009 BMW 750Li last year March in Virginia, and had to drive it back home about 500 miles...to NYC. It was a 6 hour drive, and did it straight no stops besides gas And I literally only filled up twice, once when I first got the car. The 2nd time in the middle, I didn't even fill the tank full because I'm cheap 😂. I put like $25 each time So let's just say I spent $50 in gas, and mind you that's with the car... having a broken engine. Not running efficiently at all...shaking & everything. And I was still getting 22 mpg with a check engine light 😅, I was very impressed. I feel like if the engine was in perfect working order, I would've spent even less...and could get home on basically 1 tank. The car can go 450 miles on 1 tank I feel like an electric car would be perfect for city driving in NYC. I'd probably feel a bit more comfortable, with a hybrid currently though
You can't really say 700 miles for $40 because it was covered by ea. Once the period ends it will no longer be accurate. If you count every dollar including stopping 5 times for minimum of 30 min, and compare it to stopping twice for 15 min with a petrol car, it's a night and day difference.
I recently drove from NC to Florida and there was a bad wreck on I 95 where I was stuck in traffic on the freeway for 2 and a half hrs where the traffic would creep then stop, I can't imagine having a car like this on trip like that ! I would be afraid of running out of a charge and I know these cars a fast but how much does that driving fast drain the battery! I am sticking with gas powered cars because when I'm on a trip I like to fill up fast and get back on the road, I feel in the future that people that have to go to these weird charging stations will be targets for criminals! Having to stop 5 times to charge is just Ridiculous and look at the time it takes to charge! I don't care how much money you saved and you got some charges for free! Electric cars are not practical in my eyes I'm old school I guess give me a gas burning car any day over this!!!!!

Consider this one has 20" tyres. Also the RWD version is much more efficient. So that can do even 250 miles
The projected range - even in gasoline cars - all depends on how you've been driving the last 30-ish miles.

EA has two types of chargers. You need to go with 350kw instead of 150kw since your i4 can charge up to 210kw.

I used to do 800-900 mile trips each way 2-4 times a month between 2014 and 2018 so I totally get it! Now I mostly stay in town that has chargers everywhere. My longest trips now are 150 miles each way, which has a charging station halfway in between. I think charging stations will become more ubiquitous as gas stations in a few more years.

The estimate range is based on you drove it last, like an ICE car. If you reverse math your 1st trip, it would have indeed been 300+ miles of range, above the EPA, which is incredible. Also it's typical for charging to be slower after 80%.
So in other words, expect to multiply your travel times by 3 or 4? It took you guys 2 days to travel 640 miles. On my N55 X5 it takes me 7-8hrs to travel that distance.
So you spent like 40 bucks, after all the free charging. Imagine if you didn't get free charging. A 328d would get you around 750 miles on a single tank for 75$ that it costs to fill it up at 5$ a tank at the moment.
Plus all the money you had to spend on hotel, snacks, walmart, food, and all that stuff that you had to spend because you had to wait for those recharges.
Here's some rounding:
Hotel $150
Food let's say you ate 5 times in the 2 day trip for 2 people, $40 x 5 = $200
Let's say another $50 for snacks and walmart
How much you make an hr? Cause you wasted a lot of hrs...
That's $400 for a 7 hr of driving trip
When it's less than $75 on a 328d, and $40 if you stop for a break at 3 or 4 hrs of driving
Aaaaaand, 8 hrs vs 2 days to get to your destination
That's pretty terrible in my opinion.

Range, charge times, charging locations, and quantities of chargers at each location HAVE to improve...and FAST, as verrry soon there will be a ton of EVs on the road, and the line/wait time to charge will be a nightmare (possibly hours!?).
On a positive note, the I4 appears to be a great vehicle. Not a bad commuter car, for sure!!
They chose to spend the night. A 650 mile trip in the I4 would only add a little over an hour for charging stops. Less than that if you stop to eat in your internal combustion engine car.
14:49 most new cars use your driving habits to estimate your range. The range can change from different driving sessions. Drive conservatively and the number will go up or drive fast and the estimated range will go down.

Cool video. I had to laugh at the tiptoeing and air quoting about M cars. It always cracks me up by how touchy people get and how some need to tell everyone what qualifies as an M car and what doesn’t. The only entity that really gets to make that definition for us is BMW. 😬 Regardless of how much you feel like your specialness is taken away; if BMW puts an M on the car, it’s an M car. 🤷♂️ Sorry. If you have the M3 or M5 or whatever single digit M, you have the pinnacle of M in that series. And that’s awesome! If you have an M340i or i4 M50 or whatever BMW whips up, it’s still an M car. There are just others available that are even more M. 😂

Looks good; some of the questions you had, you’ll quickly get - like kilowatts per 100 miles. The i4 has a battery with about 80kw. Not sure why some people think it looked like a hassle. Looking forward to never having to go to a gas station again…. especially in NJ.

I own one, I drive from Portland to Tacoma and back often. I use Eco Pro and average 70 mph and I go from 100 % to be about 40% SoC. It's only 130 miles though. But haven't done a longer trip yet where I'll need to charge.

The full range is different each time you fill because it changes according to your avg mpg! Your m3 should do the same thing as my m340i also does the same each time I fill

There’s an app called “a better route planner” that can not only optimize by distance but by charging speed too - since maximum charging speed is dependent on how much charge you have left (more charge = can’t charge at full rate, etc)

I have an I4 edrive40 and a Tesla Model Y and yes it is confusing but 5 minute research should have set you up for a better experience (i blame the dealer) but you guys still made it.

Interesting video to see 1st timers. Not sure if those comments are appreciated. You are much better off to only look for EA chargers even if you would have to pay for. Since they are free I definitely would restrict myself to those. If you go to other brands filter for at least 150kw and look for at least two charging stalls as you don’t want to show up and someone else is charging.

Courageous of you to start that journey with what seemed liked total ignorance of the usable battery capacity for your car (80.7 kWh), how the guessometer functions, and charging curves. It seemed like you were learning along the way, but then you took that final long charge to 100% for no clear reason. As we have an i4 eDrive 40 on order, it was reassuring to see yet another video confirming that this is an efficient platform.

The range estimate is based on your driving style, it’s just like filling up my 2019 440i, if I drove it nicely for a week it’ll say 390 miles till empty when filled. If I bashed it for a week it’ll say 250 miles till empty when filled. However all the electronics including AC, Audio, Power Windows, Lighting, and ancillary electronics will eat your battery unlike in a gas car where your range is not dependent on that😢👌🏽 I wish I got my i4 M50 I had ordered to extend my 440i lease an additional 6 months. Then I ended up buying the 440i after the 6 month lease extension.
Electronics and AC do make a difference in a gas car. It’s just no one is paying attention to that.

Mileage is definitely calculated by how you drive, just like with a gas car. You're driving all highway, so, at a decent speed, it's going to be higher. And after owning over 20 brand new cars, the first few tanks of gas, are always off. So, the charging of the car is going to be the same.
In an EV, all highway will yield LOWER efficiency. In town I can get 5.5 - 6.0 mKh (Nissan Ariya, summertime). Highway use gets me 3.3 - 4.0. Battery will regenerate in town, extending range, highway gives virtually no opportunity to regenerate.
FYI: You don't need the EA app. You can do everything from the BMW app once you connect your EA account to it.

Nice car! Any kind of home charger setup? What’s BMW recommend for that?
Home chargers are all level 2 chargers, which will charge the vehicle from dead to full in 9-10hrs. These level 2 chargers are 240V, level 1 ones are 120v and would take over 24hours to charge the same amount. The car comes with a mobile level 2 charger that will adapt down to level 1 with the 110v attachment. These fast chargers are level 3 DC chargers.
Honestly, I think I’ll stick to gas for road trips, but for city driving and everyday errands the electric seems like the right choice.

Better strategy to charge less, drive faster, charge more often. This way you can get your average speed around 60 mph (including charge stops!)because empty battery charges a lot faster
My E90 tells me a different "distance til empty" every time I fill my car up, and so does every other gas car I've ever owned. So it seems par for the course lol.

I know this is months old, but I’m just seeing it. The miles are the battery capability, but the wheels you have make it worse. So in 18’s it’ll do 312, 19’s it’ll do 270 miles. I’m assuming you got 20’s which brings is down to 220ish.

So for BMW 2 year free charging Electrify America, Does it mean Free 30mins Per day?? Using Level 2 Charger 20-80% 30mins of time? The Charger says 0.43$ per kWh.... BMW i4 have 83.9 kWh...So that's like 36$ USD to charge 270 miles. Gas Car probably 60$ So you save 24$ per charge...and the Electric car just ridiculous Expensive now...I guess you are NOT saving money to go GREEN energy
$21 for 80% and you need to stop 3 times to charge.. if you drove with a gas powered car of that size you would need about 1 and 3/4ths of full tanks.. so doesn’t that mean it’s basically the same cost for the trip whether you’re going electric vs gas? I mean the numbers are pretty darn close. So the only upside is.. you’re not polluting; however, even if you took all the cars off the road the amount of co2 emitted per year would only decrease by about 1/6th if that. The biggest polluters are caused by industry.. so while we are all paying huge costs for battery cars.. industry basically hasn’t done shit to move the needle yet 🎉

I bought a 2009 BMW 750Li last year March in Virginia, and had to drive it back home about 500 miles...to NYC. It was a 6 hour drive, and did it straight no stops besides gas
And I literally only filled up twice, once when I first got the car. The 2nd time in the middle, I didn't even fill the tank full because I'm cheap 😂. I put like $25 each time
So let's just say I spent $50 in gas, and mind you that's with the car... having a broken engine. Not running efficiently at all...shaking & everything.
And I was still getting 22 mpg with a check engine light 😅, I was very impressed. I feel like if the engine was in perfect working order, I would've spent even less...and could get home on basically 1 tank. The car can go 450 miles on 1 tank

You can't really say 700 miles for $40 because it was covered by ea. Once the period ends it will no longer be accurate. If you count every dollar including stopping 5 times for minimum of 30 min, and compare it to stopping twice for 15 min with a petrol car, it's a night and day difference.
I recently drove from NC to Florida and there was a bad wreck on I 95 where I was stuck in traffic on the freeway for 2 and a half hrs where the traffic would creep then stop, I can't imagine having a car like this on trip like that ! I would be afraid of running out of a charge and I know these cars a fast but how much does that driving fast drain the battery! I am sticking with gas powered cars because when I'm on a trip I like to fill up fast and get back on the road, I feel in the future that people that have to go to these weird charging stations will be targets for criminals! Having to stop 5 times to charge is just Ridiculous and look at the time it takes to charge! I don't care how much money you saved and you got some charges for free! Electric cars are not practical in my eyes I'm old school I guess give me a gas burning car any day over this!!!!!
