HEY HAVE YOU SEEN SRWs!!!!! yeah, swords are overused but think for a second that swords were the reason for that fight not being as interesting as it could have been. a maiden sword fight could have had all kinds of sick-nasty bullshit especially with semblances
My philosophy with action scenes is that you either need to have it be emotionally charged or well put together. While it is preferable to have both, it isn’t always possible. If you are adding a fight scene I feel that it should be one of these. If a fight scene isn’t interesting in its use of environment or choreography, you need to have it represent a moment for one or both of the opponents. Blake and Yang v Adam in volume 6 is a good example of this. I was so excited that the girls were finally understanding each other that I didn’t mind the fact that none of the combatants didn’t use weapons they still had on hand. The fight represented Blake and Yang’s triumph over Adam. If a fight isn’t an emotional or plot relevant moment, have it be well put together. Have interesting choreography or use of setting. A good example of this is the food fight in vol 2. This is more of a reintroduction to the characters and has no real stakes, but it is fun to watch because of the interesting choreography, use of the setting, and use of the characters’ abilities. Volume 5 struggled to have well put together fights or fights that mattered to the characters so many of them fell flat.
Why did make Weiss a Harry Potter like come one it’s a rapier that was meant to stab and use magic! All we see from Weiss is literally her relying on dust and act like the rapier is a wand!!! 🤬
I personally think "not quite fights" are fine, and as example the one in the bookshop and the one with Emerald about to fight the bandits we didnt need to see. However, the sheer number of not quites combined with the lack of quality with many of the actual fights makes the missed opportunities more glaring. I entirely believe my two examples shouldnt have been shown. However, most of the others should have been and the ones we got needed to be more clever. We have seen they have it in them, after all.
Honestly surprised Pyrrha vs CRDL didn't get higher score Also I liked Velver's reuse of animation to portray her "copy no jutsu" semblance well I'm just looking out for my girls
I’m surprised you skipped over the prologue episodes like the V1 “trailers” and the V4 and V5 prologues. V2 is my favorite season so I take issue with that opinion, lol. EM vs CY lower than JNPR vs BRNZ? There’s way less talking and reaction shots in EM vs CY and the choreography is more intricate. As for why Coco seems weak, it’s because using her weapon makes her completely stationary and it’s less effective against people who have Aura (as opposed to Grimm). Monty reused animation a lot so I don’t see what’s wrong with Velvet doing so. Blake and Sun vs the sea serpent was completely awful. Characters levitate in midair out of nowhere, too much talking, zero shot continuity. Giving it the same score as Qrow vs Tyrian...ooof. Surprised you didn’t mention how everyone suddenly became slow and weak in the V4 finale and never really recovered from it. You mentioned the characters’ inconsistent abilities during some of the mediocre V1 fights so I’m confused as to why you didn’t notice the same thing happening when they fought Nuck. Wow, only 4 setups with no payoff in all of V1-3, but 17 in the last 4 episodes of V5 alone...JESUS. it’s just so frustrating to see writers who fail to understand the entire selling point of their show is its fight choreography. How can they be this inept?
I skipped the trailers and stuff because they're not necessary for the audience to watch. Which is a bit of a shame, since the trailers and prologues have some of the best fights in RWBY. You know what, Volume 2 is the funniest, so it ain't all bad :) EM vs CY is shorter, but I definitely see where you're coming from, and I had struggled to decide if JNPR vs BRNZ should be 1 point or 3/4 points. Nothing particularly wrong with Velvet reusing animation, it was just a lot of build up to stuff we'd already seen. Still a pretty nice fight though. I found Blake and Sun vs the Sea Dragon still fun despite all its wierdo physics and constant stopping. The music, teamwork, and use of setting helped I think. Also, I didn't care much for Qrow vs Tyrian with Ruby uselessly getting in the way, and the whole "everyone stop so Qrow can slowly walk towards his sword" moment. I legitimately found them to be equal in quality, but that's just my opinion. I went into the Nuckelavee fight more in our review for V4 episode 12. I wanted to keep the reasoning in this video short, so I chose to focus on Nuck's sudden unwillingness to win, but your totally right and that did factor into the fight's score. I really do hope they figure out how to pick the fights back up in quality. (Perhaps hiring a choreographer would help?)
Twiins iink They kinda are necessary, without the V1 prologue you have no idea of the deal with Weiss’ knight, what happened at the club with Yang, the entire character of Adam and his relation to Blake, and so on. Without the V5 prologue you have no clue regarding Ilia’s backstory.
To put it into perspective, my best friend only saw the first 4 trailers, but hasn't watched any of the others after that. She still watches the show but doesn't like watching the trailers/prologues, and she understands everything fine enough. There are casual viewers who don't take in everything the show has to offer (trailers/soundtrack/World of Remnants) and so I chose to exclude them since they weren't technically part of any given volume.
my only complaint is qrow vs winter only being a 1. thats one of the best fights in all of rwby. also i think its unfair to lump velvets scene in with everyone else fighting the paladin. velvet should get at least 1.5 herself and the others should get a quarter tops if not discounted entirely as a "not quite" fight
eh.. you can't just subsititue teleportating speed with sword effects as fight scenes. There was no tracking and the only actual combat we saw was Winter kicking Qrow, running up a wall and lunging at him. It would have been way more impactful if there was more parrying or guard breaks...
@@frogradar that's just factually incorrect my guy. We saw the first on screen schnee summons ever. Or how about qrow dodging the first few strikes and mocking her before he even drew his weapon? The teleporting is a relatively small part of that fight. And even so, noone complains wen dragonball z does the teleporting single animation thing on purpose to purposely reuse animation. At least they used different sword attacks between disappearing instead of cycling 2 punches and a kick. Up to V3 Qrow V Winter is easily one of the best.
I would say the hardest part in many of the fights is showing the diffirence in skill level. So for example, Rwby has a problem with cqc, which is understandable because she is fighting with a reach weapon, but then there are SO MANY instances where someone STOPS her, while she is using here semblence, I mean how? It is literally speed and not in cqc. I really liked the fight of Yang vs Neo. That one showed the difference in skill level well brilliantly, but in many other instances it is mindboggling. I notices how you ranked for example Cardin vs Jean low, but it has to be. They are both noobs, Jean cheated himself into Beacon and Cardin only has raw strength. I think it depicted the scene perfectly. Oh one last thing, group fights. The only group fights that deserve to be called that and not everyone fighting an enemy next to the other are against the Nevermore and death stalker and Rwby vs Roman in the robot. Every other fight, even if the whole crew was togather, were single fights with no interaction between allies.
Well, they kind of learned their lesson on the not quite fights for V6? More in the sense of "Oh they wanted to see the fights let's give them that" *Proceeds to make fights 2+ episodes long. It's like they just don't understand, do they not watch the previous episodes of when people loved the fights to understand what they are missing? It's very bothersome and I hope they get it in their heads that they actually need to use the full range of abilities and make it an actual fight, not a "we know the good guy is gonna win so just make them swing a few times at each other and have the bad guy go down". I would love to see RWBY/RNJ actually lose a lot more fights, would make the fight against Salem seem way tougher, but no it is filled with so many ex machina's, etc. Creativity has gone out the window, RWBY has become a narrative show instead of an action show but still has it's banner of being an action show up. The worst part of that scenario is that they try to hold up their animation skills for the fights but the actions of every character are so slow or random, sometimes weird and confusing it's a mess.
Oscar vs Leo, Weiss be Vernal, and Oscar/Ozpin vs Hazel should’ve counted as just one fight since it is all a part of the school raid. It was technically just one big fight but also the most boring thing in the show. So it seems like Vol 5 should have 8 fights imo.
I think the train fight deserved to be split up in V2. We see entirely separate encounters with Yang and Neo; Weiss and white fang lt; Ruby+Oobleck vs mechs and white fang; Blake vs torchwick(kinda).
That's fair. I decided to put them all into 1 big encounter since we jump between them so much without dialogue to separate them. But I understand why one could consider each of the different pairings different fights.
Here are the averages per season: 1. ca ,861 2. 1,0625 3. ,890625 4. ca ,6428 5. ,55 Through this we can see that in total, the last two seasons were by far the worst. (I did this because of course season two was gonna have a higher score than the others, since it has so many more fights)
animation has the advantage of being able to show without telling, say with no words and this shows how reliant on talking they gotten recently so much that they have to give lore dumping mid fights when its more lore impactfull and visualy appealing if its smartly shown with hints and visual/audio cues instead of words
I have to be honest I've rewatched the show at least 2 or 3 times and yet so much of the show is honestly just forgettable to the point where I don't remember half the scenes shown in a lot of RWBY related content/videos or it was written so poorly I don't remember how the timeline or characters work/interact.
It makes sense that the volume with the tournament arc was the one with the highest score. I could have figured that out without the arbitrary scoring.
It has more fights, stakes and tension, it was the peak of RWBY, the delivery moment, it goes to show how Monty´s vision even altered to some degree by RT could still end up delivering a solid end to the build-up of the 2 past volumes in a meaningful way, nowadays we have 1 volume of travelling nonsense with poor build-up and then a arc that delivers poorly, the current RWBY volume production formula doesnt work, they should´ve stick to 3 volumes per kingdom, 1 travelling volume with actual properly executed worldbuilding, 1 volume of build-up and worldbuilding at the academy the students are in and another volume to conclude the arc.
0:10 Okay personal question, If something keeps you up at night, should you make a video talking about it to just get it off your chest? Does it help? Because it feels like this helped.
Yes! In fact, this whole chanel was created because I literally couldn't stop thinking about issues from volume 4 (the most recent volume at the time) and wanted some way to get those thoughts out. If you've got something keeping you up, I recommend making a video about it. You don't need a fancy microphone or editing software, you don't even need anybody to SEE the video. Simply getting the thoughts out can help a lot :)
I think for a lot of the not-quite-fights, (mainly the ones not featuring the main characters, like Emerald and Mercury vs Tukson and Li vs the Nuckelavee) if they were fully shown, people would complain that they were unnecessary and took screen time away from the main cast. I do think the fight for Haven could have been better if they didn't jump between characters so often
for volume 5 fights at the end i think they set up too many fights with too little time to execute them that and the fact that people keep on disappearing and reappearing when convenient
I love this breakdown. I also didn’t enjoy the fight between Weiss and Vernal. She relies too much on her summoning when she knows she shouldn’t. I liked Raven vs Cinder but I think they just limited their power cause of animation while also highlighting how similar the two characters are with what they did to get their new powers. Just what I believe.
The food fight is still the best fight imho. Just the choreography and cleverness of the "weapons" was amazing. Others may disagree and that's fine... ...you have every right to be wrong.
I know I'm very late to this but a thought I had. How do you think the quality for Rwby's fights be if they brought on Genndy Tartakovsky to help? I think he'd be great because his action and fight scenes have a bombastic style similar to Monty's.
REVOLUTION!! RIOT THE RWBY CAST GIVE US BACK OUR FIGHT SCENES! NO MORE ROMANCES THROW THEM ALL IN A RING AND MAKE THEM KILL EACH OTHER..... iii uh mean the latest season of 5 and 6 feel so so so incredibly bland especially the closing chapter of who blake decides to jump on a bed with. i never cared all i cared about was what i thought the main story was salem and getting the relics should be more focus on the fight scenes its a fight anime stop giving me expedition and show me in the fights whats going on. what is this BLEACH? NARUTO (filler)?
Like for real? You place the two best choreographed fights of Vol3 (Ruby vs Torchwick and Yang vs Mercury) only 1 but the long convoluted fight between Pyrrha and Cinder that should have ended in an instant 1.5 ? Also, why didn't you add the trailers (I mean, characters shorts of Vol1, 4 and 5) in your count?
@@twiinsiink Oh, I didn't expected you to answer. Don't take it too harshly, you pretty much explained why you considered this fight as superior than the two others. Talking about the trailers and characters shorts, do you intend to do another video judging the fights inside?
@@maxentirunos Maybe some day? As it is it'd be a pretty short video so if I do I'll wait for some milestone volume (like, 10 or 15 or something) and do it then. Either that or wait for a time where they delay the next volume of RWBY for another year.
Power levels, on paper, is a fine concept. "That guy is stronger than this guy. This guy needs to become more powerful". It sets a goal for the hero to achieve. The problem so often with RWBY fans specifically is like, they want a point by point break down of the kids working out. "We didn't see them train". As if the only valid way for our heroes to get stronger is for them to have exorcise montages and scenes dedicated to "ok let's study battle strategy".
My issue is the blindingly obvious power level change between certain characters (e.g. Weiss's train fight compared to Weiss vs Vernal) I find it so stupid how much they dumb down characters. RWBY fights in V1-3 were great, but V4 onwards they started getting super slow, the only fights I thought were above average was Cinder vs Neo and Blake and Yang vs Adam. They still don't come anywhere close to Monty's fights though.
In defense of Vol. 4 it was really more about character development than action. I don't take too much exception to talking during fights since you kind of need to establish the character's emotional investment in the conflict. And while that could be handled better in other ways at least it's not as bad as pausing the action for pointless reaction shots like they had a bad habit of doing in the first half of Vol 3. Now I could argue the relative merits of a lot of these rankings but for the sake of brevity I'm just going to point out some issues I have with 3 that I feel were over scored. RWBY+Oobleck vs train: It has Blake, Yang, and Weiss pointlessly go into the trains interior and then abandoning each other to have 1 on 1 fights instead of working together to take down Neo, Banesaw, and Torchwick. This one is especially egregious since the fight is completely unnecessary since their objective is to stop the train and they could easily do that just by having Weiss conjure ice of the tracks to derail it or freeze the connections between the cars so the can't separate before they explode and have the explosion derail the train. JNPR vs BRNZ: It has Pyrrha sticking her head above cover while dealing with as sniper. It has BRNZ stop attacking so JNPR can have their shipping name argument (which is different from talking during a fight since JNPR seems to forget they're even in a battle - and no they don't get away with it by mentioning it). And it has Nora anticlimactically one shot the entire enemy team. Raven vs Cinder: It has Raven point out that Cinder's Grimm arm isn't protected by aura and then never use that information to her advantage, not even when it's being used to suck out her Maiden powers.
While the train is egregiously convenient with their pairing off, I still found the fights themselves to be really fun. They were well animated and choreographed excitingly, and the whole thing lasted about 8 minutes. Conveniently cool fights are preferred over boring ones, I guess. You're really not wrong when it comes to JNPR vs BRNZ and Raven vs Cinder. I had waffled a lot between giving those fights 1 point or 3/4. I ultimately gave them 1 since I found them to be "good enough".
I'm inclined to think that a multi-million dollar entertainment company like Rooster Teeth should be able to provide fight scenes that are both good and work within the narrative of the story they're trying to tell. If you want to look at the fight scenes in a vacuum that's fine, but I personally prefer looking at them in context especially if they raise a lot of continuity issues. For example, Blake being able to defeat Torchwick alone raises the question of how no professional huntsmen were able to deal with him during the entire course of the series up to that point. And you have Weiss being unconscious yet surviving a chainsaw to the midsection as probably the best evidence that Vol 5's 'aura must be activated' reveal was a massive retcon.
shineyorkboy ok..1) Blake was able to beat him because she surprised him with elemental clones. The first time they fought she couldn't beat him. Also he never fight professional huntmen. 2) Weiss wasn't knock out when the chainsaw hit her.
Okay now you're getting into the whole 'designed my own weapon' plot hole, plus the why, when, and how did Weiss have that ammo clip built, where was she keeping it before giving it to Blake, why did she wait until she did to give it to Blake, and how did Blake learn to use it so quickly issues. Regardless the fact that Torchwick's plans were thwarted by first year students 4 times yet the police and graduated huntsmen were unable to deal with him over a multi-month time period both undermines Torchwicks threat as a villain and makes the Vale authorities look completely incompetent. Also, Weiss gets knocked out when she gets slammed into the floor then she gets baseballed though the door with a chainsaw.
shineyorkboy There are massive time holes in each volume, it can easily be explain away as 'They worked on it during the school year ' and 'Blake trained to use it off screen during said school year' Also you assume that she was knocked out when slammed to the floor I assume she was knocked out when she got baseball through the door.

Your channel is great btw more RWBY fans need to discover you ASAP
Aw, thank you!
5:08 It was fast, but these were experts fighting, not students.
Also they weren't trying to kill each other, just show one another up. Hence why they kept on taunting one another by acting cheeky
Why did make Weiss a Harry Potter like come one it’s a rapier that was meant to stab and use magic! All we see from Weiss is literally her relying on dust and act like the rapier is a wand!!! 🤬
Just realizing Weiss (one of the protagonists in this action show) had no fights in volume 4
Dissapointing
Neither did Yang.
On account of being...well, disarmed.
I don't count her sparring with Taiyang.
@@benjaminmcneil574 now they all care about shipping shipping and MORE shipping!
I know I am VERY late on this but I wonder how would you score volume 6 (and it would be nice to know how many fights were there lol)
I'll be making a video on it soon! :)
Agreed!
Honestly surprised Pyrrha vs CRDL didn't get higher score
Also I liked Velver's reuse of animation to portray her "copy no jutsu" semblance well
I'm just looking out for my girls
This was such a great video; found all your playlist for your videos...welp, looks like I'll be binge watching them 😄
I’m surprised you skipped over the prologue episodes like the V1 “trailers” and the V4 and V5 prologues.
You know what, Volume 2 is the funniest, so it ain't all bad :)
EM vs CY is shorter, but I definitely see where you're coming from, and I had struggled to decide if JNPR vs BRNZ should be 1 point or 3/4 points.
Twiins iink well I heard miles and Kerry have moved away from 'directing' the fights and made a new lead animator to control how the fights go.
Lightdragoon88 I heard about that too, I hope things actually start improving
2:26 the best fight. Still come back to this one.
Too bad RT doesn't care about cool fight rather just shipping shipping shipping!
And the voice actors even support it! Arryn and Barbara are shipping BMBLB and that's something they talked about during the panels.
@@rubyrose4418 these people are soo sad rw-by is a waste of time

Holy shit the amount of work you put into this..... SUB!!!

“She doesn’t show off her semblance”
Pyrrha: FOOD FIGHT BITCHEEEEESSSSSSS
my only complaint is qrow vs winter only being a 1. thats one of the best fights in all of rwby. also i think its unfair to lump velvets scene in with everyone else fighting the paladin. velvet should get at least 1.5 herself and the others should get a quarter tops if not discounted entirely as a "not quite" fight
eh.. you can't just subsititue teleportating speed with sword effects as fight scenes.
I approve of your musical cues!!!
I come from the future to tell you the "not quite fights" trend is still going strong.
Probably the worst one is when it looks like Robin is about to throw down with Clover, Qrow, Ruby and Penny but then she just... doesn't.
Look I know we're from the future but we shouldn't spoil it for the past 😂
6:13 unintentionally smooth transition
I think the train fight deserved to be split up in V2. We see entirely separate encounters with Yang and Neo; Weiss and white fang lt; Ruby+Oobleck vs mechs and white fang; Blake vs torchwick(kinda).
That's fair. I decided to put them all into 1 big encounter since we jump between them so much without dialogue to separate them. But I understand why one could consider each of the different pairings different fights.
Here are the averages per season:
1. ca ,861
2. 1,0625
3. ,890625
4. ca ,6428
5. ,55
Through this we can see that in total, the last two seasons were by far the worst. (I did this because of course season two was gonna have a higher score than the others, since it has so many more fights)
The distant trousle of bones grows further away
animation has the advantage of being able to show without telling, say with no words and this shows how reliant on talking they gotten recently so much that they have to give lore dumping mid fights when its more lore impactfull and visualy appealing if its smartly shown with hints and visual/audio cues instead of words
About Jaune vs Cardin - "zero thought put into the choreography" is sorta the point right? Jaune isn't a skilled fight even remotely.
I have to be honest
I've rewatched the show at least 2 or 3 times and yet so much of the show is honestly just forgettable to the point where I don't remember half the scenes shown in a lot of RWBY related content/videos or it was written so poorly I don't remember how the timeline or characters work/interact.
Through the Qrow vs Tyrian fight I was like. “Fuck off Ruby! Can’t you see some cool shit is happening?!”
Please rank all the fights in volume 6 when you review it👍
Sounds like a good idea! :)
11:36 more like Hazel F***ing up Qrow’s back
0:10 Okay personal question, If something keeps you up at night, should you make a video talking about it to just get it off your chest? Does it help? Because it feels like this helped.
Yes! In fact, this whole chanel was created because I literally couldn't stop thinking about issues from volume 4 (the most recent volume at the time) and wanted some way to get those thoughts out.
If you've got something keeping you up, I recommend making a video about it. You don't need a fancy microphone or editing software, you don't even need anybody to SEE the video. Simply getting the thoughts out can help a lot :)
Twiins iink Well...alrighty then. Thank you!
I like this shit Ren does over here 7:36
I agree!
LOL
3:42 I think they would agree. they were dealing with Grimm so much that it stopped actually being fun.
for volume 5 fights at the end i think they set up too many fights with too little time to execute them that and the fact that people keep on disappearing and reappearing when convenient
I like the Banjo & Kazooie music
While volume 6 had the least fights it's fights that did not involve the giant mech where a big step up from 5.
Just what I believe.
yeehaw now for the v7 fights
do trailers/character shorts next? and group them all together as if they are a volume for the total score?
The food fight is still the best fight imho. Just the choreography and cleverness of the "weapons" was amazing. Others may disagree and that's fine...
...you have every right to be wrong.
I wanted to see the Attack on Tucson and Qrow vs. Raven, those fights seemed like they'd be cool but then they just stop
I know I'm very late to this but a thought I had. How do you think the quality for Rwby's fights be if they brought on Genndy Tartakovsky to help? I think he'd be great because his action and fight scenes have a bombastic style similar to Monty's.
I'm not familiar with his work. A quick google search tells me he does star wars stuff, I don't really watch any of those shows.
@@twiinsiink He also does Samurai Jack, Powerpuff Girls, Dexter's Lab and anything with a similar art style. I highly recommend.
The music in this reminds me of Monster Hunter
Another not quite fight is qrow vs Grimm in volume 4 and oobleck and port vs Grimm
You should do another one of these
I mean, I've already done one for volume 6 and one for volume 7.....
Bruh does yang have the rinnegan
Like for real? You place the two best choreographed fights of Vol3 (Ruby vs Torchwick and Yang vs Mercury) only 1 but the long convoluted fight between Pyrrha and Cinder that should have ended in an instant 1.5 ?
Also, why didn't you add the trailers (I mean, characters shorts of Vol1, 4 and 5) in your count?
It's subjective.
They weren't part of the actual show. I didn't want to focus on supplemental material.
Qrow & Ruby vs Tyrian: 1
Raven vs Cinder: 1
Understandable, have a nice day
1 means = Good
Qrow vs rwby got snubbed, its a top level fight
People who complain about power levels or want action clearly hasn't seen any cartoons or animes.
Neo vs yang 3000 points
Also, Weiss gets knocked out when she gets slammed into the floor then she gets baseballed though the door with a chainsaw.
shineyorkboy There are massive time holes in each volume, it can easily be explain away as 'They worked on it during the school year ' and 'Blake trained to use it off screen during said school year'
Also you assume that she was knocked out when slammed to the floor I assume she was knocked out when she got baseball through the door.
Fight with mute character: Too mischief talking.
