I think what makes it so hard is that once you replace a bad habit, if you dont take immediate action to replace it with something else, say a good habit, then you fill the void with whats known. And just because you broke the bad habit doesnt mean you forgot it. Thanks for the upload Jocko!
I love Jocko, he motivated me to start getting up at 3am. But over the years I have realized he is such a machine of discipline that he has never had to contemplate strategies that get you to be disciplined, to change your habits you've had your whole life. And I feel this guy's question, he was asking for strategies but Jocko just did a motivational speech, which is great but not what people like me need. So I come to Jocko for motivation and inspiration, but I go to Tim Ferriss for strategies that help a lesser mortal like myself who is not a tank of discipline.
strategies are useless without the right mindset, it might work for a while, but as the guy who has asked him this question said - start strong and fade fast - using a strategy to start and then it all fades because you don't have the MINDSET, THAT'S why he doesn't talk about strategies, because it is fluff
Dichotomy of Jocko: Natural born leader, kind and thoughtful human being, a father, a husband, a son, a friend, a man who is a patriot and a giver of some of the wisest advice ever thought of and spoken... And someone who could kill you in probably 10,000 ways you never heard of and faster than you can even imagine. It's really weird. He's fucking terrifying and yet someone who you can trust with ANYTHING and he will always do what is honorable.
well, doing whats dreadful in the case of the asker would be to not do the old habit. So the action to take is to stop taking the easy action. While it might not be the most fitting answer here, it can still apply here too.
Trying to quit smoking with Easyway method. I’m still struggling with the genuine urge to want one, the book goes through how to debunk those thoughts but it’s not enough. Thank you Jocko for helping me kill the craving, I will be back to watch on repeat as I try my ass off not to slide back.
Thanks, Jocko! Short, concise - and using 'ole Will in a way he would be proud of! Instead of contemplating, savoring and connecting with your weakness, the evil that is holding you back, a second longer - Take ACTION and MOVE "off the X" and into a better alternative, positive action - INSTEAD of allowing your weakness to win! Make the negatives in your life an increasingly distant memory by positive action, every time. Hope I got that right..... Thanks for being there for us guys!
Different reading than I expected. Upon first reading, I expected Jocko to tell us the fight is in the nightmare-to suppress the nightmare. Instead, he tells us to act. The nightmare isn’t the inner struggle to avoid doing the wrong thing, like kill Caesar. The nightmare is what keeps us from doing the right thing. Dispense with the nightmare and do what’s right. The nightmare is a battle that doesn’t need to be fought. Circumvent it entirely and move onward to victory. Brilliant inversion of the text, Jocko.
Damn Jocko. They just want to stop chewing on pens or something and you take it to the theatrical reluctance to carry out an Shakespearean assasination plot. You crack me up. 😂
Jocko's the youngest brother of the Kane and Undertaker. He was separated from his twin brother Kane during child birth but this Wrestlemania it will be a triple triple threat match against the Shield and the Wyatt family.
Between the acting of a dreadful thing And the first motion... The first motion is the "motion" of the soul, the impulse which one then needs to act upon (or not); the acting of the dreadful deed is the actual carrying it out. But the meaning is the same and the quotation apt.
