- You should not waste your money buying clothes for your safari. The best safari outfit is likely to already be in your wardrobe. In this video, I talk about what you should wear to an African safari.

Awesome advice. If travelling internationally and taking carry on, from Australia you have 7-10kilos available 😀. Your personal recommendations are excellent. You will not impress elephants, lions or hyenas with designer clothes.

I recently traveled to Tanzania for a month. I bought 3 mixable safari type clothes, greenish tan…2 long pants one knee length. I found ones that felt very comfortable. I was glad I bought new (used) clothes because they dried quickly. My home clothes would not have worked well. I did have one light weight jacket that I had for layering. And one fleece I needed a few times.

One thing you should know Tanzania is country okay . When you say your going to Tanzania 🇹🇿 you don’t have to say then Zanzibar because Zanzibar is in Tanzania . It like your saying your going to USA and then to Washington , does that make sense ?

Yeah.... I DEFINITELY need 100% new clothes hahahaha
In 2008 I did a 16 night wild bush camping safari, travelling in a converted 4x4 truck. We didn't have much space for luggage so inevitably our clothes became dusty and grubby and probably smelly too.
In the Serengeti we stopped at a visitor information centre. While we were looking around a woman appeared in the whitest safari suit I have ever seen. Even her shoes were white. She took one look at our dishevelled group and much to our amusement disappeared.

So my Question is - WHAT should I do ???!
I encourage you not to be scared. Be prepared for eventualities that may happen but also relax knowing that the governments of the countries you will be going to take tourism and tourists very seriously. They do not want a scandal in their hands so they do their best to keep their tourists safe.

I would avoid dark blue.
Great videos and tips. My wife and I are planning a 2-week safari to Kenya and Tanzania in September of this year. Question for you, I read that I can't wear wide-brimmed camouflaged "boonie" hats during our safari...is that true? I heard some countries restrict wear of anything military/camouflaged.
It's wise to avoid Military camo gear but I don't think it applies to hats.

It is very common for safari camps to do laundry daily for clients. So two sets of clothes are sufficient.

Thank you for a very helpful set of advice Anthony. I have a question: are pastel colours considered bright colours? Like pastel yellow or pastel blue?
They are considered bright colors. Pastel yellows, blues, and greens and oranges. 😊
I would personally not consider them too bright but you may want to avoid them if you can.
There is no hard and fast rule though and the recommendations I give are more guidelines than rules. If you don't have anything else in your closet, or if you really want to wear them, go ahead. Remember it might get dusty and dust in places like Kenya stocks to clothes really good.
but most of the cars Ive been on in ten visits to Africa for safari have had NO windows. The sides are open. And most of the time I wear shorts
If you should blend in, then shouldn't you wear camouflage? Something like desert tan Mulicam or MARPAT.
How to meet you in Kenya??
Could you just recommend some budget African safaris where you're more likely to see the Big 5
Almost all the safaris you take in Kenya and Tanzania will have one or two Big five's in the park. I would recommend doing Kenya or Tanzania and do two parks to maximize your chances of seeing all the Big 5.
If you are going to Kenya then Masai Mara needs to be on your list. If you are going to Tanzania then Serengeti needs to be on your list
I would advise against going to both countries in one trip. You don't want to have to deal with immigration in the middle of your Safari.
Would I need binoculars?
Some safari companies provide this so you might want to ask them if they do and probably ask what exact brand it is to check if it will work for you.

It's common for ladies here in Kenya to wear leopard print. So I don't think it will be a problem. One caveat is to ensure that the clothes with the leopard print do not look like combat clothes.
For the avoidance of doubt, you want to make sure that it's very distinguishable from military gear.

I have proven even hunting orange cammo works and does not make animals afraid. I’m totally lucky and have old Patern 85 Canadian military cloths and they work the best for me. Old school canvas basketball shoes work the absolute best in my opinion. But seriously I have used shirts and cloths from my local works man’s store and they worked just fine. And don’t wear short shorts u less you really enjoy pain

South Africa is a developed country, you can dress up or dress casual, depending on your circumstances.

You will not go wrong with layers of the clothes you wear everyday.
For luxury hotels, they only clothing you expect is a bath robe which you will have to leave behind after your stay.
These hotels usually come with tid bits like shower gel, toothbrush, lotion, shampoo conditioner...
