On my first visit in 1966 I can remember Fort Regent before the leisure centre and the rolling green down the hill and the canons were outside. Then again in 1978 riding on the cable cars from the old snow hill station up to the fort.

That's a bit depressing. In the mid 80s I worked in a small theatre in Fort Regent (behind one of those arches) and worked on a project called The Jersey Experience, an automated audio-visual show about the history of the island. I spent a lot of time in there. Everything seemed new and smelled of fresh concrete and it was spotless. I think Summertime Special was being broadcast from there at the time too. The whole place felt like it was the jewel in the crown and no expense was spared. I recall the cable car too. I worked on various projects too and the management were quite happy to bring me over from Manchester quite often. I do recall one evening when working on the Jersey Experience, one of the cleaners telling me about her wartime experiences on the island. One time I was working to the last minute to fix some stage lighting, one of the staff drove me to the airport in the minibus. My plane was already taxiing out. They stopped the plane, drove the steps over and I ran with one of the customs guys over the apron to get on the plane! I am shocked to see how things are now.

You may have known my sister, she worked on the Jersey Experience too. Her name was Chrissy Rafferty.

That name certainly rings a bell. Didn't she work for a portly big boss who was in charge of all that stuff?. I also recall a scouser who was an electrician who worked mainly in the Gloucester hall doing sound and lighting. I can't remember his name though but he once explained to me the process of moving over there, renting a flat for a certain time, then a bigger one etc. I often wonder if he stayed or went back to Liverpool.

I remember the snake slide when I was a kid. Sure my mum has a pic of me sat in the mouth of it in one of her photo albums.

Thanks so much for the video. I grew up in Jersey in the 80s and 90s, and I remember lots about the Fort, but you pointed out many things that I didn't know existed!

the first 2 people to go in the cable cars was my grandfather (Edward Townend) and my father (Terry Longsden) while working for Regal Construction. the cable cars were tested by sending bags of sand and cement up in them. after sending up all the bags, they jumped in the last car.
where you said the sandpit was, was where the big 6wide bumpy slide was that you went down on a mat. opposite the ghost train was where the Ferris wheel was, which was then change for one with egg shaped cages that could spin.
the picture of the Snake slide was taken in the 80's, as the slide originally was as high as the wall next to it. it was made shorter as kids would fly off the end of the snakes tongue.
Humphry the Lion was played by John Le Cocq, a local guy who worked as an odd-job man at the Fort.
opposite the Dodgems was the cages that you stood in and swung back and forth to make them go over themselves. what you said was the Quazar was originally the Tavern bar, which had a pool table.
talking of the Dodgems, I was on them at the same time Depeche Mode was.me and my mates all got their autographs they was playing a gig at the Fort that evening.
where the hurdles are was originally a go-cart track, it was then taken away and a big Alice in Wonderland bouncy castle was put there in the summer months. it then became an obstacle coarse with balancing beams and poles to climb to ring the bell at the top. then it went back to a go-cart track again in the late 80's.

Enjoyed this. Lovely to see the old pictures you've interspersed through the video, showing how it looked in it's tourism hey days. Quite nostalgic.
