- In this video, a stressful day plays out in front of the camera. My inability to manage or organize my copious amounts of junk is getting out of control. I am trying to get my barn organized so I can have a place to do my timber frame joinery but the piles of "stuff" is keeping me from having the room.

Working farms always have clutter for the exact reasons you describe. The only farms that are clutter-free are the ones that are hobby farms owned by those wealthy enough to run out and buy whatever they need whenever they need it, or those that only appear clutter-free because they have many places they can hide the clutter until it is needed.
I showed my wife this video and her first reaction was, he's not disorganized he's out grown this small space. build a new space for all the things that are not wood working related to reclaim the wood working shop/outbuilding. Move the chaos out to a new storage space to organize it and put your mind at ease.
EXACTLY what I was going to say! Told my husband he just needs more space. Everyone that does these types of things needs extra storage buildings.
Most all of us fight this battle, we just don’t record it which we appreciate you for! If you threw something away, it’s sure as the night is dark you would need it the next weekend.
When I get to this point I acknowledge that lean-to add-ons are man's only source of sanity and should be embraced (back of buildings are great for hiding away all the things you may need one day). Chin up, there's always a path forward.
First, Happy Birthday, I am old, One days closer, right? 😆
Anyhow, Use your walls (Shelfs and Hooks ) Celling (Laydown some boards ) and Benches ( on the back, maybe,) This gives you 3 things, #1 a place to mount vices, grinders, ETC, #2 a place to work on stuff. #3 and more shelfs. The good thing about the bench is that it will only take up a foot or two of floor space.
I build all mine two feet wide, so I only need to make one rip cut in the plywood. But if you are using boards or just want skinny benches, It is really not that much more work.
Hope this helps friend.
April showers bring May flowers. But mostly lots of weeds.
Happy birthday!
One of you better videos. I've never raised pigs or chickens, or peas & carrots, and I never will, but I have had a "junked up" 21/2 car storage shed, all of which was full of short pieces of 2x4 (6) and things I "might could use in the future. It was a big relief after I took to truck loads to the land fill. It was like having new storage buildings, AND my truck would fit in the garage, and in the other bay I could fit my trailer mounted 15 KW generator along with my 33 HP tractor (about the same size as yours) without having to remove the front end loader an d the bush hog. So I could sympathize with you buddy.
Happy Birthday, Troy! I don't understand people who are super organized either. It is a mystery to me. I want to make quilts, but my sewing room is full of stuff. Kind of like not having room to work on your posts and beams. I think that sturdy wooden box would make a great firewood storage box for the woodstove your grandpa built... whenever you build a building to put the stove in. So you can't throw that away! 😂
Happy birthday. I understand the exact same organizational challenges that you have. Hang in there. You are not alone!
Best intro EVAR!! Happy Birthday! Get to work. Grab them bootstraps and pull!
It reminds me of my place that I should be cleaning up instead of watching RUclips
Organization is a scam don’t fall for it. Every time i try to organize my shop I end up not being able to find a thing. And if my wife helps me organize I find things she has thrown in the trash that I may need someday. Just because I haven’t used it in 15 years doesn’t mean I won’t need it someday. As long as I know where everything is it doesn’t bother me. Like I said organization is a scam. 👍✌️
And Happy Birthday 🎈🎂🎊🎉🎁
I feel your pain. After 30 years in our home we’ve decided to move. Our home was large enough to have ample room to store the things that I’m going to need or want later. We spent about 4-5 weeks getting rid of, giving away, scraping and or just throwing out. I found it’s just way too easy to throw something up in the rafters and just forget about it….until it’s time to move. I vowed that it will never happen again!! We’ll see
I tryin set time limits on stuff i save. Obviously some stuff like tools and equipment dont count, but half broke stuff you think might get repurposed, wood stuff, scraps, etc. Dont worry about scrap so much. The few dollars youd make often isnt worth it. Find someone else who sidehustles scrap and give it away. My brother in law drives my sister crazy saving everything he finds. They got their barn full,a pile behind the barn, and now hes buikding a shed. Its mindful and shows good intentions trying to save stuff, but its often not worth the mess.
First of all, Happy Birthday, Troy. I hope that you had a great one. Now, as to the clutter situation, I have had a similar situation for some time. I am one of those guys who is into everything. I rebuild cars, I build custom furniture, and I even designed and built our 4000 square foot home. When I realized that the junk collection had gone off the scale, I decided that anything that is made of wood and hadn't been used in four years was history. I reasoned that it could easily be rebuilt cheaply, so why keep it. If I may make a suggestion concerning the scrap metal, load it up and take it to the recyclers now. Seeing the cleared spot will help you gain a sense of progress and probably lift your spirits. Hang in there, brother. Clear out a little at a time, and before you know it, you will have all sorts of space.
Some of ur junk doesnt need to be filling up ur shed. Set the stuff on pallets and cover it with a tarp. Or Make a quick lean-to with ur mill scraps? Between two trees?
Happy Birthday! Go take that nap!
Happy Birthday
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TROY ! ! 🎊🎈🎊
As long as your work is moving SOMETHING forward - it's a success👍👍. -KJ
OR, we think that we might have the same problem. And we're looking for tips...
My truck is becoming my catch all storage building.
Walton here,I definitely understand the rain problems ,lol. Nothing wrong with having some extra junk laying around, just incase. Wanna sell that stainless sink cheap, let me know. Lol. We're on a 60 acre homestead and raise cows, chickens, ducks etc. Cheers
Happy birthday
you are not the only one!
is it a disease?
I don't know the answer but for some people, there is nothing called " junk" or garbage.
Everything that comes under your hand/vision/eyes, you immediately find the time/place/circumstances where / when and how you gonna need/ use it.
I drive my wife crazy.
We are like Chess players.
One quick look at the board and our mind read like 50 moves ahead.
We do the same but with Junk 😄🤣
Happy Birthday, Troy. I've been enjoying Kelly’s garden videos, please let her know she's doing a fantastic job if she doesn't see this herself that is. God bless you both and your sweet family. ~Lisa
Where did that piece of 4”x4”x4” block of wood go I had? I have the perfect use for it. Ah crud, that’s right, I threw it away last month.
Troy I just got done cleaning my garage last week, and had many similar thoughts. I filled 3 trash barrels. One tip, that piglet container is a good piece of firewood if you cannot repurpose it. I could think of other uses for it. You could use it to make wooden gusset plates for the trusses on your new building but you might not be framing conventionally (modern construction methods)? That chicken table, definetly should be sold or scraped. Its just not practical. On the other hand, You are working too hard. You need a add-on grapple for that tractor bucket.
Happy birthday, Troy! Maybe our expectations are just a little too high on our birthdays😛
I am extremely ocd when it comes to organization. My general rule of thumb is that, if I don't access something at least once per year, I seriously consider ditching it. I suggest spending the time to create a place for everything. Then return things to their place after each use. It's a simple concept, but it works.
Troy, are parents were the problem! They lived through the depression, at least mine did, and taught me not to throw away things of value . Sure wished I kept Moms canning jars!
Does your timber frame work bench need somebtriangulation to keep things from racking?
Troy, the same thing happens in my house! As I funnel things out closer to the garbage cans, or closer to the cellar, or closer to .... or just out of my way for now, the areas around the exit get destroyed in my effort to get things organized! It is exhausting and frustrating...and no one to blame but myself...I say to myself, next house I am gonna make the exits exit faster for ... stuff...you know, stuff that gets in the way of my other stuff! And I don't even have a lot of stuff, it just all wants to live in the same place! lol
I think what you need is some help...you know, maybe a couple of teenagers to help out. I know that would be a blessing to me! ;)
Well Troy since you asked for organizational ideas (and I’m also talking to myself): start with a CONCRETE FLOOR, then add WAREHOUSE RACKS upon which you can place all your STUFF. Remove all the STUFF Kelli can see from the house and then GET TO WORK! You eat an elephant ONE BITE AT A TIME! 😇😂😎 Tim in northern TN
Start with the scrap, don’t wait for a full load. Don’t complicate things run a couple of extension cords instead of doing a conduit job. Making a list of priorities and sticking with each job until it’s completed is important. Suffer from the too many tasks from time to time and have to push forward and not take the nap.
blessed is the man with more projects than time. Happy birthday!
"There's things I have, that i think I'm going to use at some point, and i just can't bring myself to get rid of them."
I'm sorry to say Troy, that is hoarding.
Great video Happy Birthday, Ya we all have the same problem, some time it pays to just get rid of the metal junk and burn the wood,
Happy B-Day Troy! Looks a heck of a lot better than when you guys first bought that place.
I just knew this was going to be the long awaited episode where you start back on finishing the barn. I guess it kind of is? 😎
Happy Birthday Troy, I hope your feeling better after telling us your issues and getting it out of your system. sometimes that helps me and sometimes it dont - lol Anyway I hope your day got brighter for you. Could you get an IBC tote, cut the top off and put your metal scraps in it then it wont look like such a mess. Then use your tractor forks to load it on the trailer when you have enough to take to scrap yard.
I think the tractor would survive outside till yet get your joinery done.
Troy take your kids down there and say “Some this will be all yours”. I have a one car garage that hasn’t seen a car in 30 years.
I wish I could post a pic of our two car garage. You’d feel way better! 🤣
This video tells me you need to get busy and build a few new buildings. One 30' by sixty then a 20' by 40' and you should be good for this year.
Market place some stuff for some 💴
I build more shelves to put things on and that gives me more room to add things 😂
One of the best ways to keeping things organized is to have a 6 month time limit on storing stuff. If you haven't used an item in that time frame, then throw it out as you are not likely going to use the item. Once you keep the junk accumulation to a minimum then it is much easier to keep things organized.
wait we are supposed to have organized homesteads? I just try and keep my messes out of sight. Its hard to let go of some things as we know we can use them again down the road. Then there is the junk we just keep. The secret I am told is to know the difference...
As I often tell my Wife, I will need :Whatever it is", the next day after I throw it away.. lol
As a guy that can’t currently get his tractor in the barn, I’m not judging! 😂😂😂
I think there's bridge that can use those work horses! 🤔
Use the box to plant pollinator attractors.
Happy birthday from indiana
Happy Birthday,Troy!! 🥳
Paint it and then leave it outside
You sound like me. My list is so long, I ran out of paper !😅
Happy birthday old man
Happy birthday Troy :)
We got a boat load of rain down here also.
Happy Birthday Troy 🎉
🍧🎵Happy Birthday 🎂
I'd say a common theme I see and hear on Homesteading Channels is, "I need to get Organized", LOL. Doing a little 5 min or 1 hrs or something of cleaning, decluttering, and organizing every day over time makes a difference. And as a viewer I like watching the progress.
One Homesteader I watch who seems Here's his link
