HELP! I Can't Open my ELECTRIC TAILGATE! (2020 GMC Sierra Denali)

- This fancy loaded 2020 GMC Sierra 3500 Denali Duramax truck has an embarrassing problem: The electric tailgate is BROKEN, so you can't use the bed of your fancy new truck!!
Previous owner said that it was involved in a minor rear-end collision, and the tailgate was repaired but now the electric actuators don't release.
There is a warning message on the dash that says "INNER TAILGATE OPEN"...that's the ONLY clue we have, and a scanner is not very helpful!!
Let's see if we can diagnose and solve this weird problem without buying any EXPENSIVE parts ;)

Open the pod bay doors, HAL I’m sorry Dave, I’m afraid I can’t do that.
😂
The parts were even labeled yet installed incorrectly. A simple fix for a smart man like Ivan.
So sad how people feel that they need an electronic tailgate? My tailgate on my 2004 opens so easy!
No wonder normal person can't afford new vehicles anymore
Awesome job Ivan
My first thought was WHY have an electric tailgate . . . I don't even want an automatic transmission. I often remove my tailgate so a forklift can get a pallet in easier and so the young kid driving it does not hit mt tailgate. But this must be a *recreation* vehicle . . .
I agree, I would rather have the cushion let down option on the gate. How many times, I had something in hand, and one hand to open tail gate, and it slams down.
BUT!!! You ain't drivin' a DENALI either, my friend....
All the extras raise the cost of the vehicle and the cost of repairs, plus the frustration factor.
I don't think people buy a 3/4 ton denali because it has a split electronic activated tailgate.I'm sure that's way down on the list of features a buyer is looking for. This tailgate was a huge ad campaign by GM . Why .. who knows. Buy a GM not a Ford or Dodge because it has a two piece tailgate. SMH
Actually this stems from a body guy flip flopping two actuators not from electronics failing.
I am an old man (72+). Wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy back when I was a child (1950s), I remember my father saying he wanted a car with electric ass-wipers; well Pop, we're almost there! We just need to find the correct "micro-switch".
A truck bidet! What a concept! 🤣🤣🤣
In 1970, my dad purchased a 1966 Ford F-100 short bed. At the time I was 6 years old and had no problem opening the tailgate. Before he took that truck to the junk yard he cut the bed off and made a trailer out if it. I STILL have no trouble opening the tailgate.
And don't install them backwards because it might unwipe instead 😂
That’s funny thanks for sharing
Motorized/Electronic tailgate latch .. a solution to a problem we never had. I was never taken back by a manual/mechanical tailgate.
It's all about the lock feature, that bed also has a power sliding tonneau cover. A simple mechanical latch and power lock is too old school to be cool. So GM engineers thought up this archaic mess, which if it included power opening and closing would have made some sense. But as it stands it is a button push followed by manual effort, it saves nothing, at least with an old school tailgate latch it was one simple motion to open, pull and lower. This deal is push a button, pull the gate, catch the gate, lower the gate.
What a mess.
heh. you guys forget that GM's are *notorious* for jamming tailgate releases even with MANUAL ones. that's the chevy/GMC 'always broken" trope I've been hearing all my life
@@anonymuswereHad two Chevy’s for a total of 20 years and never had an issue with mechanical tailgates. You’re full of it.
@@RoadieWingZZ I'm from a rustbelt and acid rain state that sees salt used on a regular basis, and farm country that regularly sees vehicles used and beaten hard and almost literally to death. I'm also over fifty, so I'd ALSO be thinking of mostly squarebody CK's and early ST's. the 70's and early 80's ones were the most notorious for that. GM probably finally figured out the weak point.
6.6L of fury for picking up groceries!
Now the groceries can go in the back!! 👍
Pay Ivan 150$/hr to tell you the body shop guy that gets paid 35$/hr put the latches backwards😂😂😂
Spoiler Alert!
Take it back and have them re-do the peeling paint job too
You mean $18 an hour.😢
but if the guy can't do the job properly he's not worth $0 an hour
Especially since the modules were indeed labeled L and R ... no excuse
That's a really nice truck to be honest but damn these manufacturers have gone to far with all the electronics!
I recently traded in a 2010 Toyota RAV4, everything still worked and functioned the same as it did when new. It's list of repairs in 212k was vvti gears, coolant hose, both outer tie rod ends and alternator rebuild. Otherwise routine maintenance. We never replaced a single light bulb. Brakes averaged 40k.
You should see how much wiring it would take to do the same number of connections, in any given vehicle. I'm not sure of the exact number, but it will not fit in the vehicle...
Ivan is the best! When it comes to hunting down problems. 😊 I enjoy all of Ivan’s videos!
The MAN 😅
@@chrissmith7655 yes in deed
Nice video and great catch on the latches being installed backwards and upside down. I guess the body shop strikes again. They are good about putting square pegs into round holes. 😂😂
A 3500 gmc. Diesel work truck. Without a tailgate handle amazing tech. 😂
Seedless water melons and computer controlled dome lights were the start of the zombie apocalypse. Hell in a hand basket I tell you. 😂😂
Accept Jesus, he will save you.
Haha I’ve said that several times times in the last week it used to be a joke still is but getting closer to reality every day
These tailgates will be more popular than a cat converter
My cat doesn't need converting, she's purfect as she is.
over-engineered uselessness. Absolutely ridiculous when you can have something as simple as two hooks and latches do exactly the same thing.
I chuckled when I saw the Driver Information Center refer to "Inner" tailgate, with the diagram referring to "Minor" or "Major". They never make it easy! I guess there will always be a rush to production, with documentation being the lowest priority. A smart dude like you will always figure it out, no matter how inconsistent the documentation is....
And then the parts catalog calls it something completely different.
And auxiliary
Why there aren't explosive bolts on these things is beyond me.
Thank you general motors for over complicating something as simple as a tailgate. Also, if your truck requires a built-in staircase; it's too goddamn tall.
Some people (like me) need a high clearance truck for off-highway camping. But an elect tailgate? No way!
If you saw the hipe commercial for the GM gate, they have people removing their ‘normal gate’ into a pile for the super new one. Kinda betting some people want that old gate back 😂
Can’t blame General Motors, they had the latches labeled for the side to be installed and all that was needed was to install the latches on the correct side.
Man, Ivan...the comments section doesn't disappoint.
I own a Sierra with one of these origami tailgates. Love it. Do I need it...nah. Am I concerned about it's durability...yeah.
But this video isn't about that. It's about people not taking the time or caring enough to do their job right.
Sooo.... you're part of the problem. Got it.
Good job, Ivan! Professional grade!
Really enjoy your videos. Wish I lived closer in case I have a problem with my car.
Brilliant detective diagnosis and a happy owner to boot. Not a bad start to the new year. My eyes have seen the glory of the ####
Thanks for the video Ivan.
Excellent diagnosis
Great work Ivan
Great diag Ivan enjoyed the video.
Working in a GM body shop I replace quite a few of those upper gates because they’ll hit the trailer hitch if you leave it installed. You can actually lock out the upper gate so it doesn’t accidentally open for that reason, and if you don’t realize that it makes for some unnecessary diagnostics when you replace a tailgate and can’t figure out why it isn’t working.
Nice to see the GM design team thought this out... 😀
Wonderful work, as usual Ivan. Have you tried the Pad7, since you look at Launch products ? I know it's huge but despite that it is very comfortable to work with, not to mention the specs. Just curious, I'd really love to know your opinion about it
Hello Ivan, I would like to see you use your new launch more frequently so we can learn how to use it to. Fantastic video, I had a similar problem in the shop, but in my case one of the switches was damaged in an accident.
I like this channel so much I will lower my standards and suffer through this video!
Fixing a garage man's companion 😮😄
Work ethic and Diagnose procedures are no.1
Nice job 👍
Great NPR fix.... just wondering how or why those latches were switched? Oversight or was some doing some testing? Great channel btw.
I know what you mean Ivan. I got really comfortable with my old Launch X431 Pad II because it did everything I needed it to do reliably. The only major drawback that I had with it was when the DLC port lost power and can't power the VCI. Now you have to find what fuse blew. Where your average snap on scanner usually doesn't care if the DLC has power or not.
Anyway, nice detective work with the tailgate latches. It's true that a lot of body guys usually don't understand how some mechanical or electronic things work. I'm constantly tending to those issues that the body guys at my shop randomly miss.
That truck is a prime example of wretched excess. I would never own a vehicle like that.
Absolutely 100% hit the nail on the head. Maybe after a hundred things go wrong on this thing the owner will open his eyes and realize what a huge mistake it was to pay an outlandish $100k for no good reason
they make it difficult to buy the "stripped-down" version
@@NCJerry So don't buy one at all. Most people who pay an outlandish $100k for these things nowadays work in an office and have no legit reason to buy something this ridiculous, they're just doing it to say "look at me." If people with more money than common sense would simply refrain themselves, maybe car manufacturers would start being taught a lesson and prices would start getting back more toward this side of normal again. But unfortunately too many attention starved socialite greedies these days, and car manufacturers and dealers know they can prey on them. Same reason dealerships right after Covid got away with upcharging a Ford Bronco by $10-$15k and Ford didn't do a damn thing about it.
Unfortunately, you as the consumer often don't have that choice. The manufacturers bundle the feature into a specific trim level that may have things that are useful or desired. You get the feature whether you want it or not. I bought a truck and had a difficult time getting all of the features I wanted without a moonroof included as part of the different packages Luckily, I had a salesperson who knew how to get around the manufacturer's bundling of the moonroof into various packages.
@@sblagg527he never will open his eyes. These things are ego boosters on wheels. Nobody respectable drives something like this.
A while back I found a VIN option decoder through, if i remember correctly, the NHTSA. I was using it to see if a junkyard vehicle had the same side mirrors as my moms before I made the trip. Nevermind making the trip anyway to find the mirror had already been removed.
Great job!
Genius, great fix 👍
I have had 3 Ford escapes, the first two had motorized lift gates, had a lot of problems with both. The one I have now, I ordered with a manual lift gate, problems are gone.
Good job Ivan.
My first pickup truck had over-center latches with chained hooks. It worked perfectly.
Hey Ivan... Looking forward to hearing what you thank of that Launch X431 Pro3S+.
It's great! Would be my go-to since the ThinkTool Pros is discontinued :(
You were looking at the back window controls, look up on the headliner and there’s the controls for back window latch or should be if it’s like mine and btw that is a factory radio.
Great . Thank you for this video. I thing you miss PID for the last door lock function - all door unlocked at 14:09
Awesome fix Ivan! Where are all your subscribers??
Thanks Roxanne! Are they hiding? :D
Great job!! I'm ok with a good old manual tailgate. Great looking truck though!
Left and right is tough. Some people dont have it figured out until they are eight years old. Unless the latches were installed by someone who identifies left as right and right as left. This might be a canary in a coal mine. Let's hope that that recent Boeing 737 hatch failure didn't happen because the engineers and assembly techs couldn't agree on left and right.
Don't judge. I use both of my right hands daily. Lysdexics Untie!
@@timkaldahl I'm not judging. Just observing. I used to coach kids soccer. It's amazing how many 12 year olds still look at you for confimration when you say "left defence". No kid... the other left. I guess that life lesson needs to be taken up by the quality assurance people at GM.
Our 21yr old daughter who graduated college still can't figure out Left from Right with out holding her hands up w thumb out to make an "L"......,it's truly amazing.......it's truly amazing, I think the "standards" for graduation over time are slowly getting lower..... sorry for the rant...lolol....
I worked as a massage therapist and coached a few sports....1 in 4 adults don't know left from right!?! It seems like a simple concept but a surprising number just don't know for certain.
Wow, great detective work Ivan. You would have thought the original owner would have went back to the shop that repaired it to complain about this problem. Maybe that’s why they sold it.
Like Elon says, "The best part, is no part". I agree Ivan, if your truck is 10 feet tall, and staircase is handy! (Especially if it WORKS!)
Uh...huh...because software never has glitches....sure....dream on...
Funny thing is though that Tesla's have electronic door handles with a backup mechanical latch handles. Elon had them solve a problem that didn't exist with extra electronic components.

@@buckhorncortez Fortunately things are easy and cheap to fix in software. Unless your software provider is a psychopath.
Someone installed the latches opposite where they're supposed to be. HMMMMMMM! "Gee. Why don't it work?"
Good one Ivan.
Hi Ivan, had to fix 3 GM vehicles with faulty Rear Hatches or Tailgates, problem? Micro switches. Many thanks from UK.
Had a similar issue right from factory. On the right side the latches were installed backwards so when you pressed main gate switch one aux latch would open and one main latch would open. had to press both switches to open main gate. Figured it out same kinda way you did as could not unplug the latches on the right side but left latches you could unplug them. Kinda confusing for a bit till you get your head wrapped around what was going on lol.
I thought for sure it was going to be in the tailgate heating element circuitry. Nice work Ivan. 😃👍👍🇺🇸
No. The tailgate booster powered by the high speed CAN is the more likely culprit. Very occasionally it's the turbo encabulator. The heating element can never cause enough bifringence to demodulate the signal.
@@major__kong Somehow that doesn't coincide with the perpendicular?? Lol
That's a necessity when you sit on the tailgate in Winter.
@@johnt.848 That would be beneficial, though not the intent of the feature.
I like the step design - I have a 2013 F150 with the pull out step and it's fantastic - this seems even better being a bit wider. Double-hinging the tailgate adds complexity and cost...but the real issue is the GM marketing team saying we know how to make this a premium option and tossing actuators and wiring in it - it's going to fail eventually and I bet it's before a handle that pulls a couple rods or cables does.
Great Job as normal!!!
Man! There is always something to learn from your videos. Just following analogical thinking until the evidence presents itself.
It reminds me of the old car's where you would have to wiggle the connectors and close the door by door then look at the dash to finally see which door/latch was the problem
NPR BABY!!! Ivan is a master. And some jamoke installed them backwards and caused a dumb issue.
JAMOKE...haven't heard that term in eons. Robert Blake and Barreta rides again.
So, the micro-switches on the "Major" cargo box endgate was preventing operation of both the "Major" and the "Minor" cargo box endgate. You had your laptop and you panned your camera to the right and I noticed the gearshift. I was struggling with the fact that this $80,000 "fancy-pants" (as you like to say) truck didn't even have automatic transmission. Then I noticed you were sitting in your XL-7. LOL. Does it also tell you the glovebox is open? To think I drove a 966 on my farm for a few months.....How did I do that? GREAT VIDEO!
Im a mobile diagnostic and adas tech mainly doing work for collision repair shops. Shop called me with this exact issue, video was almost identical to the issue here. Thanks a bunch
Nice!
I keep my vehicles for a long time, currently driving a 2011. Thinking of upgrading to a 2500HD but now I may cross off the multiflex tailgate. I'm sure it would be nice for a while but doubt it would work well for very long.
Great video! As soon as you had trouble unplugging the latch, I knew what was wrong. Your videos are uping my trouble shooting game.
The original Murphy's Law wasn't, if something can go wrong it will. It was, if something can be installed backwards it will be. I think it was specifically a bolt being inserted backwards.
@@major__kong yep, Murphy was a real person working with the US space program. It was noticed when he was at a test something went wrong.
Getting your exercise in backing and forthing
I have a truck like that and wondered how to open it if it failed now I know nice video
I bet the instructions are in the owners manual. 🤪
Wow: Even though they are labeled R & L, some dope put them in backwards. Amazing
It was probably more obvious than that. They probably installed the latches and noticed they couldn't get the plugs on. So they took the latches back out, plugged them in, and then reinstalled them without questioning why they would have to do that.
Just curious Ivan why don't you use the Tech 2 when you work on GM products? I love the new scanner you're using I have the older version and it's a good tool.
Tech 2 works until most 2013 models :)
...nice diag/fix there Ivan.....geez, what an over-engineered nightmare... 🙂
saw the R stamped in the white plastic when testing the "left" :) .... ahh and yep theres the L clearly stamped in the "right" one just after
Yep, hard to toss stuff in and out, also too tall for a 5th wheel, unless you want the trailer nose high so there is bed clearance.
Nice job
I would have looked into the multi-pro tailgate module because that's where I would expect to find those PIDs and bidirectional controls. If still no joy, you can rent the software (I want to say it would be on the order of $55 for 3 days but don't quote me on that) and use the MDI module for the full factory scan tool experience on any laptop.
Fun toys to play with Ivan I'm guessing somebody got in there and got confused and which side was which
My F150 has power lock with manual step up. 4yr old and works perfect

That under body wiring loom location doesn't look 'factory' to me. lol Thanks Ivan !
Too many wires LOL!
No bs when you plugged the left in the right harness and it worked i told myself I bet any money someone swapped them. Nice job and you got lucky you didn't test them on the harness the way it came in because anyones guess on how it would of turned out. Also it's a truck why do they do stupid sh#t like that. When I buy work vans and trucks I look for the ones with the least amount of plugs and electric components. Power locks and windows are about all the extras I need.
Now time for the owner to have a little chat with the body shop!
I have a feeling that truck will be back 🙄 Waiting for part 2 👍
Brilliant
I was definitely waiting to be not so surprised of a micro switch failure on a 2020 GM but can’t blame the engineer or quality of parts just yet! (NPR now means something different to me than noodly midday jazz and boring news)
NPR = FAKE NEWS haha
You solved the mystery again with no parts added.
2015 ram Cummins derate from bad def injector. Could not clear and reset with thinktool pros, had to reset with launch x431 pro5
Can't really blame the 'fancy' truck on this one. Someone wasn't paying attention when they put it back together. I guess you could say that they should've made it so it is not possible to install it on the wrong side, but you can never underestimate the ability of people to find a way put something together wrong.
There are two guys I work with that have the same issue. Fairly sure it is related to water ingress causing a short.
Same issue being they gladly overpaid for a ridiculous truck by at least $30k?
Nice job!
Whoever worked on the tailgate last should be forced to pay for their mistake!
I wonder with the latches disconnected if the scanner would have shown inactive on any of those switches
Nice find! No more 5 year bumper to bumper? Must have had a fiddler as I doubt that was factory.
The old owner said there had been some sort of rear end repair. I'd bet a body shop had it apart and just put them back in the wrong way. Warranty would have been declined if the dealer had found a body shop mistake so probably better to have Ivan do it.
Think most bumper to bumper warranties are 3/36 these days.
A MANUAL TRANSMISION TRUCK. NICE
It's only 22 years old and runs great :)
My Chevy dealer wanted me to upgrade to a newer High Country with the fancy tailgate. I said, "seems like more stuff to go wrong". Didn't see benefit then, still don't.
Pretty bizarre you can actually install the locks backwards (and upside down) and would still mechanically work (I originally thought the wires were installed backwards until Ivan pointed out the Left and Right designators.
That is very cool! People have installed rear brake calipers on the wrong sides. Why not the tailgate switches? 😂
I've seen front brake calipers installed on the wrong side AND upside down ! (I quit trying), but never did figure out how they got it to bleed out and have consistent brakes. The only thing the owner said was "his buddy did it"
I didn't even know that was possible!! LOL@@brianmason8400
Did you see my new truck?
…mine is paid for and the tailgate works.
So is mine and it has an electric tailgate that works...
What do you think of the autel 906BT?
Great Video Ivan! I like the intro *_HELP! MY FANCY ELECTRIC TAILGATE IS BROKEN_* 😆
I was waiting for these tailgates to start failing especially in the salt belt. Nothing like the one piece manual gates that last forever.
I wonder how the the latched opened sometimes and sometimes not and what the connector wiggleing has to do with that, when the latches were flip flopped all the time ?! I would think it would be dead ALL TIMES ??
Ivan. For you: "Once again science and logic have over superstition and medieval fear." (That's from an OLD TIME radio program.) I'm 84 now, and I was a little kid when I heard that radio program. That tailgate is like GMC a designed Matryoshka tailgate!
Ivan what's going on with the bar scan not showing the correct RPO options? I have a few newer trucks at work and its not close to being accurate?
Ask GM lol
I like simple and reliable. Nothing wrong with a mechanical lever or handle. Also i don't care if the tail gate drops with full force. Why do we need luxury tailgates that open softly?
Well diagnosed Ivan :D
Hmm left and right locks are slightly different, Left i.d and Right i.d
Silly design as allways.
