    Motorized/Electronic tailgate latch .. a solution to a problem we never had. I was never taken back by a manual/mechanical tailgate.

      @truracer20 11 месяцев назад +5

      It's all about the lock feature, that bed also has a power sliding tonneau cover. A simple mechanical latch and power lock is too old school to be cool. So GM engineers thought up this archaic mess, which if it included power opening and closing would have made some sense. But as it stands it is a button push followed by manual effort, it saves nothing, at least with an old school tailgate latch it was one simple motion to open, pull and lower. This deal is push a button, pull the gate, catch the gate, lower the gate.

      @@RoadieWingZZ I'm from a rustbelt and acid rain state that sees salt used on a regular basis, and farm country that regularly sees vehicles used and beaten hard and almost literally to death. I'm also over fifty, so I'd ALSO be thinking of mostly squarebody CK's and early ST's. the 70's and early 80's ones were the most notorious for that. GM probably finally figured out the weak point.

    I know what you mean Ivan. I got really comfortable with my old Launch X431 Pad II because it did everything I needed it to do reliably. The only major drawback that I had with it was when the DLC port lost power and can't power the VCI. Now you have to find what fuse blew. Where your average snap on scanner usually doesn't care if the DLC has power or not.
    Anyway, nice detective work with the tailgate latches. It's true that a lot of body guys usually don't understand how some mechanical or electronic things work. I'm constantly tending to those issues that the body guys at my shop randomly miss.

    Working in a GM body shop I replace quite a few of those upper gates because they’ll hit the trailer hitch if you leave it installed. You can actually lock out the upper gate so it doesn’t accidentally open for that reason, and if you don’t realize that it makes for some unnecessary diagnostics when you replace a tailgate and can’t figure out why it isn’t working.

    I like the step design - I have a 2013 F150 with the pull out step and it's fantastic - this seems even better being a bit wider. Double-hinging the tailgate adds complexity and cost...but the real issue is the GM marketing team saying we know how to make this a premium option and tossing actuators and wiring in it - it's going to fail eventually and I bet it's before a handle that pulls a couple rods or cables does.

    In 1994 we ( my company) bought an F150 pickup with a 4.9 six cylinder engine, 2wd, 5 speed manual transmission. Today, over 30 years later, I am long retired (78) and that truck is sitting in my driveway today. I replaced the clutch in 2015. That truck is the best vehicle I have ever owned. It cost $15,000 in 1994. It was paid off in 1999. If someone in the Ford upper echelon dug out the drawings and re- released this vehicle today, and sold them for around $28,000 they would sell more of them than anyone would believe, as its reputation preceeds it. I dont know when, or if anyone at Ford will have the common sense to go back to the premise upon which Henry Ford built his first and subsequent vehicles, " Build a vehicle which the people that work for me can afford" They (Ford) has ruined the reputation of the BEST SELLING VEHICLE IN THE WORLD FOR OVER 50 YEARS. You have to be a company run by idiots to do that.

Most people who pay an outlandish $100k for these things nowadays work in an office and have no legit reason to buy something this ridiculous, they're just doing it to say "look at me." If people with more money than common sense would simply refrain themselves, maybe car manufacturers would start being taught a lesson and prices would start getting back more toward this side of normal again. But unfortunately too many attention starved socialite greedies these days, and car manufacturers and dealers know they can prey on them. Same reason dealerships right after Covid got away with upcharging a Ford Bronco by $10-$15k and Ford didn't do a damn thing about it.

      I agree, but it's all about progress too. A nation that stops innovation is a nation that will no longer be prosperous. Seems like GM and Ford so behind in EV technology. The whole industry seems to be in limbo now. Where are our "Henry Ford's" and "Thomas Edisons"? Seems like after Apollo, we on a slow splash down. Maybe our workers just want too much $ to work and our technology go elsewhere? Just seems like a dollar buys nothing now.

    No bs when you plugged the left in the right harness and it worked i told myself I bet any money someone swapped them. Nice job and you got lucky you didn't test them on the harness the way it came in because anyones guess on how it would of turned out. Also it's a truck why do they do stupid sh#t like that. When I buy work vans and trucks I look for the ones with the least amount of plugs and electric components. Power locks and windows are about all the extras I need.

      It was probably more obvious than that. They probably installed the latches and noticed they couldn't get the plugs on. So they took the latches back out, plugged them in, and then reinstalled them without questioning why they would have to do that.

    Ivan I think the problem with the tailgate being fixed has to do with improper operation previously by someone. because if you have a receiver in the hitch. ie ball and open that lower gate step at the same time,the step hits the receiver and dents' the tailgate step part !!so that's probably why the tailgate was fixed to begin with so let that be a warning to all you out there that have that option or know of someone that has that option this wasn't the first vehicle that happened to let me tell you

    I would have looked into the multi-pro tailgate module because that's where I would expect to find those PIDs and bidirectional controls. If still no joy, you can rent the software (I want to say it would be on the order of $55 for 3 days but don't quote me on that) and use the MDI module for the full factory scan tool experience on any laptop.

    Well, we can’t blame the truck for a technicians error . People who work in and out of their trucks daily can and do enjoy all these little conveniences but you definitely need to have a well paying job with checks coming to you each and every week to afford them! To the bodyman who ripped this tailgate apart to knock the job out quickly - let this be a lesson to you. Pay close attention on tear down and bag and mark parts that appear to be the same, they usually aren’t! Countless hours are lost every day having to remove and reinstall things correctly. There are differing lengths and sizes of screws for a reason. I’m going to admit one I made around thirty years ago or so …. Didn’t pay close enough attention to bolt lengths when reinstalling a chev. Truck hood safety catch and closed the hood to discover a nice bolt point sticking through the top of the hood! (That I just painted!) 😢 and I assure you I haven’t made that mistake again!😮 I can’t be the only one who makes mistakes- can i ?

    I gave up on GM when they started the ill-advised "downsizing" program starting in 1977. They didn't "downsize" the price, but they DID downsize quality, comfort, durability, and the beautiful styling that existed BEFORE 1977!
