An island off the east coast of Sweden in late October can be an harsh place to race motorcycles, as the contenders for the World Enduro Super Series are about to find out at the Gotland Grand National. Here competitors will face a flat out three-hour XC race around a 25km course.
It'll be anything but simple, though, as not only will racers face a varied course that boasts everything from tight pine forest to bottomless bogs, but there's 3,000 other riders to think about and the very present threat of rain or even snow and ice.
Whoever takes the GGN win will undoubtedly earn it the hard way.

I'm so proud to be from Sweden and Gotland when I watch this! During my childhood my whole family went to watch this race every year. I wanted to some day also participate, and also Novemberkåsan. I turned out to get the position as a motorcycle courier in the Swedish Armed Forces but never got around to participate. But I guess it's never too late, except for if I wanted to ride on the same grounds..
Great and fitting music 7 min in 😃🤘
I love watching this race and me and my sister actually raced it 1 year and damn was it less the ideal weather that year. It hade rained so mutch that they dident even need to dump water on the regular places they usually do it on.
EDIT: It looked about as bad as it did in this video.
12:35 "on a borrowed bike, rider 7032..." wonder how that went down. Hey buddy, can I borrow your bike for a quick ride this weekend? Nothing serious
lmfao
I live on Gotland.
It's great seeing the race every year, i've seen it since 2007
I love the fact that years of racing has brought the top racers so close to each other, they’re pretty much friends by now
Matt Carbonel That is what endurance motorcycle racers/riders are like - they are very different than motocross racers. I’ve camped with Mike Lafferty, Dick Burleson, Fred Hoeses, Alan Randt, and a majority of the top National Enduro Racers at events starting in 2004-2005. We all share stories just like normal guys. Because we are all just normal guys. Endurance motorcycle racing is VERY family oriented. It’s the best.
Kinda lame if there are no serious fights around the track
@@aaronmarzec2018 I disagree about the mx part I recently started riding mx at 21 and everybody is very friendly and I've made more friends due to mx in the past few months then any other sport I've done
Thank you so much for doing this. The coverage is amazing!!! BRAVO RED BULL!
Thanks Oli! 🙌
I have to agree. Always superbly done vids.
In Sweden, this is warm up
In finland its breakfest
That is so true
For me it’s just a dream 😂
@@jessekangassalo8995 You mean the ride to work xD
Yea In Norway its a normal track day
Love the commentary. So easy to understand thanks red bull
This race is now definetly on my bucket list. I´ve already done Kärme Kustaa in Finland, so this is kind of the next step.
If they sell the bikes:
Only used to go school
No crash
Never limited
Selling it because I can't handle the power
Got new tires
Lesson learned. Only buy secondhand bikes from casual rider
@@Felixthecatz casual riders are usually clueless when it comes to serviceing and general looking after of a bike
@@codenamenoob4973 there is plenty of things to check to know if a bike is good to go for whatever the asking price may be. for example checking compression is something most people never do. Then another thing is to ask as many questions possible while reading there body language and their tone. Check for hairline cracks around the block and head. Among many other things. Have a checklist ready and the tools needed if possible to check out all elements of whatever youre buying. Ive learned alot from my dad when buying used vehicles whether its a car, mx, atv, diesels, etc.) Then along with my own experience buying used vehicles over 20 years.
@@Felixthecatz fyi, 90% of the riders in the competition is just casuals. This is what casual enduo is in Sweden :)
🤣🤣🤣
Going for this next year! Wish me luck🤞
Good luck 🤙
Respect to the riders!
I think the bikes needed *some* maintance after the race!😅
Just got back from the 2020 race. Not neadly as muddy, but my bike is still totalled😬
Impressive display of mental and physical strenght
How diverse WESS is, is just amazing.... it's survival, it's primal, inspiration level %infinitive..... Hats off to all the entries, thanks RedBull!!!
This is insane. That beginning shot of all the riders blew me away.
Great video and a great race! I was there the whole race and it was awesome!
They show the same footage repeatedly to represent various milestones in the race. This is awful footage. That scene with one biker running into the other going through the mud was used three times. They didn’t even bother to list the women’s champion or points standing?!?!
I agree, they should say what place the female rider was in the whole race, not just amongst the females. There is no reason females can't win the race.
@@vytas5584 No there isent but to be totally real there is a reson why men and woman dont race in the same class. They really dont stand a chans.
The section where 1 rider rams a 2nd is a very popular section for ppl to go to and stand. This year it was obviously not needed but this is 1 of 2 popular places becouse they are intentionally drowning the area with water to make it muddy as hell.
@@vytas5584 cause there shit and cant win
Nice to see the 4 strokes out there crushing it. 👍
Next year will be interesting to see how much the WESS guys can improve and take the fight to the locals.
They pulled it out of the series :(
@@v1kku why?
too much talk than the race show
Agreed
Insane... good job all riders!
That’s racing! Mud makes everything unpredictable. Awesome!
Nice video... However it's quite uncool that the guy finishing 3rd doesn't have an interview just because he's a private dude, when the guy finishing 13th does...
Sick coverage Red Bull, this was awesome.
When you are in Sweden, you play metal music!!!!!
@@cameronledoux95 sad but true:(
@Pcc b And 99% of all rapes and most crime.
To awaken the Viking spirit one day to smash the Call to Prayer.
@Pcc b More and more cities become like Malmo. You are beeing lied too. Sweden is on its way to a system crash. Just look at that uppdrag granskning filipstand and you will see.
More and more places will get like filipstad. The swedes are moving out. Gotland is one of few places where it still really feels like Sweden.
@@cameronledoux95 sd2020
the glory of gotland is restord!
I live on Gotland.
This is just a track that every amature can get a couple of laps on. These Redbull riders should have enterd Novemberkåsan. Thats the real deal
True that is more technically riding as its more tight runs in the woods but it is also run late in the evening/night so light is mandatory. Thats probadly why it isent part of this series. I did gripendygnet 24 hour team race 2 years in a row and damn that was fun. 1st year rainstorm 2nd year dry desert so got all the conditions.
Great work Red Bull!!
thats why i drink redbull support all the actions sports i like, no other company doing 1% of what they are doing !
One thing that amazed me that so many riders go without barkbusters, metalbars in front of you hand. Not only protect you hand if you smash in to a tree or down to the rock, you olso protect the clutch handle and brake reservoir.
We Vikings love the mud.
i live in martebo sweden and im gonna go there with my leyland 344 ;)
st the Gotland Grand National track still prepared by the P18 tank regiment. Also i have around 30 medals from the time when my dad raced the GGN. and the 1983 GGN was worse than the 2018
( my dad was there racing that year and he says that the 2018 GGN is nothing compared to the 1983 GGN )
and if you would ever get the idea to race the GGN then you need rolls of tape so you can seal every seam of your enduro clothes and there is never too much tape on your clothes when running the GGN
The most epic mud kneading race ever.
Aggressive track! Love it
thanks RB!!
I would never do this race on my bike. I would have to get one for free or buy a used older one. Awesome race to watch though, and i am excited to watch them race on the sand beaches!
Its just mud!
@@cummingspower4794 Sooo freakin hard on your bike lol. Yeah its just mud getting in every crevice of your bike and working its way into your intake after you fall over a few times, and destroying your engine. It's definitely not JUST mud.
@@RacerRed thats what they are for whats the point too keep them new for ever
@@cummingspower4794 I get that mentality if you are a millionaire. I respect my bike and look at it as a piece of art as well as a capable enduro. I take my bike almost anywhere, but i am not willing to intentionally tear it down in every way during the course of one race. Like i said, I would buy a used bike that was expendable i think.
@@RacerRed You dont have to be a millionaire to own a bike!!!
@Kevin Horgmo Vlogs Getting that Holeshot!!

Reads muddiest race of all time!?
Me: i mean it can’t hurt?
Red bull mantapp 🤩
Would love to compete in this. One day perhaps...
Vikings !!
The muddiest race ever was Mxgp of Spain in 2008. Is was inferno
Will have to look that one up, if it was worse than here, then WOW!
Check out the 2008 Daytona Supercross too! It was extremely muddy!
yes!
If you want a REALLY muddy Enduro race: look up Novemberkåsan, one of the oldest Swedish Enduro races. GGN is dry compared to what novemberkåsan tends to be
kade not his clutch, he got water in his motor! You could see flames out the exhaust. Then the motor just gave up! Smoke from the engine, yes probably was his clutch, cos he would have been slipping that clutch like 40 bastards just to keep it going!
19:20
I bet that clip was done on Friday when it wast ju a slight bit of mud, then the rainstorm came and changed the whole race :)
16:31 hard race
Great vid.
TICKFORDNZ it was aye
fullgas kevin!!! 💪🤘✊
What's Paul Bolton done to his face, mega cheek scar
How good would a hot shower be after doing that lol.
Hi from sweden
Heja Sverige!
What's the song they use for the 2018 WESS youtube vids? Nothing but snow and rain here for the past week so watching this for inspiration lol.
It's I am Alive // Twin Atlantic
For sure.... For sure...for sure? For sure!
Nice Mudfest
0:03 thats a di*khead move right there
You don't say? "Lives in place and has been training for this race all year." Of course people who have access to the track should be doing the best.
MrWaffles it's a military area and it's closed except once a year.
Reminds me of The Blackwater 100. Mud mud mud
It starts at 5:43
amateurs are ones who are scared Pros are the ones who aint afraid to die
Hejja Sverige !
how many riders was join in the tournament ?
TO ALL YOU KIDS OUT THERE WHO WANT TO BE RIDERS ...IT'S AN INCREDIBLY EXPENSIVE HOBBY !!!! SO WHEN YOUR OLD MAN BUYS YOU A BRAND NEW $10,000 KTM ,MAKE SURE YOU THANK HIM ,REPEATEDLY .
Bad experience mate?
Im a junior on a 150 4 stroke and our local pony express was 27km
@12:39 “Worn brake pads” ? This is a 22 km race. How do you wear out rear brake pads in less than 22km unless you are holding the brake down the entire race while traveling @ 100 kph. I’m thinking someone skipped maintenance day or race prep day on this bike. If that’s the case then why even race.
Muddy hell 💪🏻
Side note, I read Sweden has had to up its defense spending because Russia has eyes for that island. Kinda placed in the right spot.
OT but Gotlands strategic importance is that if you control the island you can control the vital Baltic Sea route and use the island as a base for ballistic missiles that can target Sweden and the baltics - thus making it really hard for Nato troops to get to Russia from the west.
@@henripuustinen4642 yepp. Incase of war in Europe again NATO would seige the island. even in some video here on youtube by NATO you could clearly see a map in the background of Gotland with a circle around it.
You need to see mx gp 2017 in Indonesia. For muddiest race ever
For whatever reason I am finding it harder to understand the British riders speaking English than the others!
Christini AWD bikes would have dominated this
If that was the case everyone would have them...
Could one use like plastic layers on there goggles so when you can see very little quickly pull a layer off?
Dayum that Sounds like a great Idea. I wonder why nobody thought of this yet.
Nice
what cc are these enduro bikes?
i like
God almighty, mud wrestling on bikes! And I thought I had seen everything...
Intro song ??
Twin Atlantic - I Am Alive Lyrics
When I was a kid I did a race with incredible mud .... when I went back to the pits, on the road I met my mom and my aunt, I called them and they looked at me ... it took them a few minutes to understand that it was me ....
Stop interrupting the race.
No soup for you!!
What's the cc and model of those ktm bikes
Pls dont ask Garcia to talk, let him ride. His speech is like "for sure, yes, like, cant wait"
Roughly how most racing drivers respond, nothing interesting to say but sponsors do need them to stand in the spotlight for promotion.
I’m drive lilla ggn 2018
Anyone know the name of the band?
What‘s the reason for rental bikes?
probably high transport costs
What's the song at the end of the video
Enduro? It's a fan boat you need, more like.
If you ain’t fast, you end up last
One day I am going to be sponsored by red bull I hope
Does anyone know the intro song?
I never seen the leitenbechler father? Where is he? Only the son is competing
he retired from competing 2 years ago and is now Mani's mechanic/trainer.
They really like ktm dirtbikes
too much talk, a lot less riding footage...
