- In this #IndicTalk, Belgian Indologist Koenraad Elst explains what Makar Sankranti is and how Hindu festivals are shamed and slandered by Christian and anti-Hindu lobbies. Makar Sankranti is a Hindu festival marking the entry of the Sun into the constellation of Makar (Capricorn). However, in modern anti-Hindu propaganda Makar Sankranti is a target of festival shaming, one facet of the bigger phenomenon of Hindu Shaming. According to this strategy, some faults are found with all Hindu festivals and they are slandered for one reason or the other.
It is said that on Makar Sankranti many birds die due to the kite flying which is a part of the festival and so it should not be celebrated. Dr. Elst says that the world over every culture has the kite flying festival almost at the same time and no one bothers about those festivals. While festivals and traditions and even fashions of the Christian countries are celebrated as hip, Hindu festivals are castigated as un-ecological, dirty, unhygienic, repressive and regressive and a plea is made to stop celebrating them.
Elst warns that it is necessary to understand this anti-Hindu game and celebrate Makar Sankranti as it should be, with fanfare, and yes, with kite flying!

That is a fundamentalist statement, at best, but extremely naive.
The makara sankranti, which corresponds to the northern movement of the sun, is the uttarayana day and falls on Dec. 22nd. Because of the precession of the equinoxes, unless corrected, the sankaranti day will slip by 1 day in every 70 years. At this rate, if uncorrected, we'll end up celebrating uttarayana day when it is actually dakshinayana astronomically! Note that we are observing dhakshinayana on July 15 when we should, if we want to do it correctly, observe it on June 22nd. Correcting this error is important if we don't want to approach absurdity.

Koenrad Elst attempts to explain Makar Sankranti and the forces against the celebration of this and other Hindu festivals in this video made by CIS. Koenraad Elst has a welcome public face as a vocal supporter of Hindu causes, and this video too can be taken in that light. The casual listener will applaud Elst, but will remain unaware of the structural errors that he injects in this video. I welcome this video and the works by Dr. Elst, but my applause is conditional.
Koenraad Elst is a Eurocentric scholar, and his thinking is obvious from his many past utterances - writings and videos.
In this video, in the opening remarks, he attributes the Zodiac (rashis) to the Babylonians, followed by Egypto-Greek Hipparchus soon for Precession. A few minutes later, he claims that Babylonian astrology was followed in India. These claims have been roundly rejected by MANY Indic scholars, whose works are widely available and well-known for at least 20 years! Koenraad Elst takes inspiration from the late Eurocentric scholar David Pingree to make such outlandish claims, without acknowledging the Indic and Western scholars who have rejected those claims and shown otherwise. This was a letdown by Dr. Elst, but it does bring to focus what he is trying to propagate.
Discerning readers should be careful to remove the Eurocentric claims and biases made by Koenraad Elst, in their reading of his works. It is good to be aware of what a scholar brings to the discourse. While Dr. Elst is entitled to his opinions, Indus University should be careful in putting such material out as learning material.
