    ABOUT VEDANTA
Vedanta is one of the world’s most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions.
    ABOUT US
Vedanta Society of New York is affiliated with the Ramakrishna Order of India. In fact, this is the Order's first Center started by Swami Vivekananda, in 1894. It was a historic event, for the seed of the world-wide Ramakrishna Movement was sown here in New York over a century ago. Swami Sarvapriyananda is the present Resident Minister and Spiritual Leader of the Vedanta Society of New York.

Ten points of practicing meditation (Swami Ashokananda):-
    1. Be regular
    2. Have a fixed time everyday
    3. Have a fixed auspicious place
    4. Patterns of thoughts
    5. Avoid bad company
    6. Austerity (Tapasya)
    7. Cast off identities
    8. Yearning for God
    9. Have some divine connection throughout the day
    10. Holy company
P.S. This is just a point-wise summary of the speech. Might be helpful for some.

I live in a country town in Australia, I was enlightened for some reason never herd of Adviata Vedenta 6 months ago or any eastern texts. So I have worked backwards haaaaaa. I had to find a explanation for how I felt so inmo is my new word along with wonderful. After stumbling from one western philosophy to another I somehow found you. I would like to thank you for making sense this. You have made the experience I have which I try to explain as both impossibly massively overwhelmingly large and insignificantly tiny and unimportant. Everything is everything and everything is NOW. I’m blissful and happy so again thank you again from an uneducated father of four who works on a Dairy and now is complete.

    1. Be regular. Body and mind needs to be trained.
    2. Have a fixed time as far as possible. Early morning is best time. Transition times (morning to noon, noon to evening, etc) are good for meditation too.
    3. At least twice a day.
    4. Negative thoughts will arise in beginning. Just observe them.
    5. Keep good company and good thoughts.
    6. Some level of austere living i.e. तपस्या is needed. Fasting, giving up bodily comfort - just a little bit. Do not deprive yourself of too much and too fast.
    7. Forget all your identities in this world and be focused while in meditation.
    8. Intense desire for God. Even if not much, try to stimulate and bring it in yourself.
    9. Have meditative भाव throughout the day. Try to remain connected to the God throughout the day.
    10. Holy company i.e. spiritually advanced and even जीवन्मुक्तs.

The same i could feel while meditating, where i am serving lord Vishnu and after sometime he opens his eyes and i could see all the stars and the whole universe in his eyes. wonderful experience and at the perfect time. I am so much thankful of Swamiji, He just brought me back from death "Suicide" and gave me a new life by his teachings and really made me understand that "I" am still alive.

I have wondered why swamis, gurus, etc are so named. How do they get their name, does it try to capture the qualities the person shows as a predominent characteristic, or does it capture charateristics that they must work on to imrpove? I feel we should all be given such a name in order to refocus us on what our true nature is (not).

i loved his honesty " i am not a patanjali yogi, Swami Vivekananda was also not a patanjali yogi. But, we have borred it 🙏🏼" further goes to say if anybody wants to learn patanjali yoga which also leads to Samadhi/ultimate one can, also gives the name of the place where one can visit to do so. So, no patent or ownership on yoga.
This transparency and honesty is what i was looking for all these years. I am a tough nut to crack and never read a book in life till the time my friend introduced me to "Autobigoraphy of a yogi" by shri Yogananda Paramhansa and then "Raja Yoga" by none other than Swami Vivekananda himself.
Truth is Shaswat, one doesnt need to convince you, but you get convinced automatically when you hear it. All one needs to have is a logical mind and that craving to know it.
please bestow upon me oh all you great and true Gurus your blessings, So that I atleast begin my journey on the path of eternal bliss in this life.

and to do it regularly. it took 3 mornings to be up and ready. then it became a normal habit. now it is about 2 wks i am doing meditation regardless of any thing. also study 2 shlokas from vivekchudamani and 2 from Bhagvad Gita after one jap mala of OM chanting. i wish to give my
gratitudes to you for the direction and inspiration.

Im 57years old and I have been practicing most of my life I just love those times now when I can just sit and just "be". Not the mind or the body but the observer and if you just practice just a little bit every day you will love it. observe the feelings and look at it and watch it go by and wait for the next thought you then realize you are not your thoughts. The mind watching the mind watch the mind. and then complete quiet and still. I love it and I enjoy it every day all day slipping into that still loving feeling of stillness. Meditation right now for me is the only reason to live. there is much work to do brothers and sisters meditation its the key to a long happy life and has taken me far beyond what I could have been. I know with out a doubt in my mind. all blessings and peace beloved

Thousands of thought comes and goes away like Ocean waves, but we have to practice stand still on the seashore. These will be touching your feet forced pulling into with, your training to stand still remains alone and then look to the horizon and see the Sun appearing from the darkness.
A very informative discourse of Swamiji Maharaj. 🙏
