Swami Sarvapriyananda is a monk of Ramakrishna Order who is well known for his lucid and simple method of describing the essentials of religion and spiritual life. He belongs to the Vedanta school of Hinduism and has given many lectures, including a Ted Talk. He has a way of simplifying the deepest concepts.
Rev. Dr Gwynne Guibord took to the stage on a perfect southern California afternoon to introduce Swami Sarvapriyananda of The Vedanta Society by speaking to why this topic has particular importance right now. “As you all know it seems that the entire world has gone mad” she said. “Many people are having a very, very difficult time. In this broken world it is easy to become overwhelmed with grief and despair culminating in our inability to move forward.”
“Each of us here has been given a purpose in life, a reason for being, and each of us carries within a caring heart and a mind filled with a multitude of ideas. We are beckoned as people of faith to rise above our heartache and work in the community to make a difference in the world, to laugh and to play and to know within the deepest part of our souls that we are good and contributing to something larger than ourselves.”
How do we access that knowledge? Through Swami Sarvapriyananda’s Three Great Powers of the Mind.
Given Swami Sarvapriyananda’s intense training and many accomplishments, (not to mention the twinkle in his eye) it became clear that he was an excellent choice to lead us though the mind-numbing trauma of today.
Swami framed his reflections as a synthesizing of the Hindu Wisdom Traditions, the wider wisdom traditions of the great religions of humanity, and insights from positive psychology - neuroscience. He presented the struggle of the Human Condition in exquisite simplicity by referring to The Hindu Scriptures: The Mahabharata.
In The Bhagavad Gita, the epic tale at the heart of The Mahabharata, Lord Krishna tries to teach both Arjuna, the Hero and Karna, the Villain, about the Path towards truth and enlightenment. Karna’s response sums up the human struggle: “My problem is I know what is right - I don’t feel like doing it. I know what I’m doing is wrong - I cannot stop myself from doing it. I have no inclination for being righteous. There is some force within me. I cannot contain myself. It is a great struggle.”
This, Swami points out, is the struggle that every one of us faces: how to deal with the passions within that drive us to do what we know, full-well, is wrong.
    Swami continues.
The Villain says: “This is what I am and nothing can be done about it. I am not interested in changing.”
Arjuna says: “This is what I am - how can I be better?.. Teach me.”
Swami pounces: “There it is! This little decision makes all the difference in our lives.”
The First Great Power of the Mind - The Power to Decide
We discover the first great power: the power to make a decision. We don’t decide because we’re on automatic; it doesn’t occur to us that we can decide. We can always decide “no” to one thing and “yes’’ to something else - from moment to moment. The real discussion began.
Swami pointed out further that we can use this power to decide about three kinds of things: what thoughts we entertain, what words we use and what actions we take. That’s a level of consciousness and responsibility as well as freedom and empowerment that we are not used to claiming in this time and culture. His wisdom is timely and important. We need to listen and to wake up.
The Second Great Power of the Mind: The Power of Concentration, of Focus.
“The quality of your life depends on what you pay attention to and how much you pay attention to it.” Daniel Goleman. Swami awakened us to the awareness that the mind is used for entertainment and distraction.
It is hard work to focus the mind. Meditation serves as a tool to learn to discipline the mind, to learn to shift the mind from one thing to another that serves us better. He spoke about how yoga can help us to get the mind serving our best selves and wove together a number of examples from ancient wisdom to modern brain research.
The Third Great Power of the Mind: The Power of Unselfishness
“The meaning of Life comes from what we doing something for others.” This is a power that is spoken of far too seldom. It seemed obvious as Swami threw a light on it. Again he brought into the discussion both ancient teachings and modern science giving a new appreciation to the act of giving.
    Please enjoy the video.

it's good as always, there are many interesting things here.
@12:00, power of decision: there is a window of opportunity, when the reactions bubble up from within us, as they come up from our unconsciousness mind and come up to the level of conscious mind before they are expressed in speech or in action, there is a window where we can accept that or reject it, where we can bypass it if necessary or replace it with more skillful thoughts, ideas, and action.
@15:48, Quoting Vivekanand. when the sleeping soul is a rouse to this conscious action, the power will come, the glory will come, goodness will come, all that is great and excellent in human life will come.
@16:21, What Should I decide upon: Decide upon what you think(what thoughts we entertain), what words we use and what action we take.
@21:30 quoting Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, pay attention: attention is a currency of mind i.e. 150 bits of information per second
    @37:42 quoting Prof Seligman
H(Happiness) is a function of P(Pleasure, habit-forming, passive), E(Engagement, active) and M(Meaning and purpose, doing something for others, more paying in long run)
@40:40 three great powers: power of taking a decision, power of focus, power of unselfishness

Just like..... Vivekananda, Ramakrishna, Prabhupada (ISKCON), Aurobindo, Swami Lahiri Maharaj....AND SEVERAL OTHERS. Yet, sometimes it's saddening 2 see😒😒 dat North India shows kinda Hatrate & Reluctance 4 Economic development of West Bengal.....a Prejudice, shown 4 long by India's Central Govt.'s Political discions & Actions against Us, Bengalis.😟😟

Where did he stayed during his visit to w. bengal...belur math..
First of all why don't we just promote the similarities rather than dissimilarity. Bengali people do durga pooja during navatri...north indian people do durga pooja during navratri.
The hate is never be a social issue. It is just spread by a small section of political class for fulfillment of thier personal agendas.

I once attended a lecture by Swami Sarvapriyananda, in which he told the story of a young monk of the Ramakrishna Order, who was suddenly stricken by an incurable disease, and within a few days he died at the hospital. But the core of the lecture was that the doctor who attended the monk was devastated by the suffering and death of such a young person, but the monk consoled him, saying that everything was fine, because the meaning of his life had already been fulfilled to discover devotion to God through Sri Ramakrishna, Sarada Devi, Swami Vivekananda, and that the doctor was very impressed to see that concrete manifestation of the miracle of faith. I cannot find the video of this lecture. Could anyone here tell me in which video I could find this story? Some friends and I have created a channel to subtitle Swami's videos into Portuguese, and I would love to be able to subtitle this one too. Thank you.

Swami Sarvapriyananda is so knowledgable in Science incl intricacies of Neuro science & psychology of Freud and others that one gets so much of valuable input from his deliberations.
It us always a pleasure listening to him but i don't know how much of it can be absorbed in our own life.Whatever we can achieve is a GAIN.

Regarding the 24m mark, on the purpose of all the Sutras (asanas, breathing, focus) is enlightenment, and how if you are able to focus such that you quiet the mind (thru Engagement , instead of pleasure.. and Meaning / Social Purpose), then you will experience the witness behind the mind..
It seems that such intense focus goes against what is often said about living in the present. For example, focus and mindlessly living , one does not notice all the detail that surrounds them. What role is experiencing the world as-is and being fully present in your surroundings versus intensely focused on something at the expense everything around? Similarly, only when one STOPS focusing and thinking about a problem, does the answer often come. So how best to use focus in light of the benefits of the unconscious, and taking in the present-moment?

Our most belovedLord Jesus Christ has given us the 10 Commandments 2 follow ! ... does that correspond to our Hindu Vedanta's "Yama Niyama" (moral ethical qualification), a basic fundamental requirement mandatory 2us Swami ji ?
