We live far inland, near the Louisiana/Texas border and have noticed seagulls near lakes and rivers. They're not overly abundant, but you do see them flying overhead when driving on bridges from time to time.
I live in a city about ten miles from the sea and there are lots of gulls around, usually spreading rubbish around, bullying the pigeons and feuding with crows.

What birds of prey would those be? Seagulls are pretty big, it takes a large bird to kill one. Hawks or kestrels aren't really built for that. Certain species of falcons do hunt seagulls but there are probably easier meals for them too. And eagles are rarely agile enough for it, although the one in the video certainly got lucky.
Those bigger birds of prey are more scared of humans and don't usually hang around population centers! By being less shy, seagulls have been able to stay in the "safe zone". But, urban ecologists have noticed more and more birds of prey becoming braver and hunting in urban centers, so maybe seagulls won't be so safe for much longer.
@@maz.s There are cases of seagulls attacking whales when they surface to breathe also, and just straight up biting off chunks of flesh to eat. Pretty sure birds of prey are unable to reach that far into the sea so seagulls will always have a safe zone to retreat to I guess.

The only place I ever saw sea gulls in Downstate Illinois was around Shelbyville.
