Making it to the top, missing the bonfire and continuing on 0 estus, frantically running around, swapping to ranged when i was too hurt to take even one more hit... easily one of the best things ive ever experienced in a game. Thought my heart was gona implode though.
Hated my life for a while in sens fortress. I got so owned. A lot of deaths there. Damn snakes. I feel like they atleast trained me for the super annoying dragon dudes in ds3 in bellfry.
Never change, Mr. Rata. Your insights are thoroughly thoughtful and your temperament is fine and tempered. I look forward to your future attempts to alienate. Praise the sun, fear the old blood, etc..
The souls players will soon return, guided by masochism once lost. The community is broken, to it's core. Foul souls player, in wait of the elden ring, emboldended by the flames of hype, someone must extinguish thy flame. They will fight and they will die, in an unending curse, for how else is a vet or a scrub, to git gud? Well a lowly scrub playing as a vet? I command thee kneel. Brandish the elden ring, for all of us.
@Vile Disturbance i don't agree with you. First of all, casuals aren't gonna play. Second, game journalists hate the souls series cuz "it needs an easy mode" and they think two lesbians killing each other on the mud is high art
Aww man, I can relate to that little speech about enjoying the setbacks. I think this is actually From’s special sauce. It’s so illogical, and is deemed an impossibility, that a game could make you enjoy those things. This is so engrained that even those who have experienced this in From’s games do not articulate it, and so it sort of thrives in obscurity. You yourself mentioned how you get frustrated in the games and maybe I’m reaching here, but I really don’t. Having asked around, I know many others don’t, either. In fact, myself and many others have totally overcame all game-related frustration through Miyazaki’s games. I haven’t been frustrated in a game since I played Dark Souls in 2011, and I play nothing but challenging games.
For me, it's kind of an odd feeling. After having played some other games with lots of bullshit in their difficulty, I thought myself as a casual player who only likes games that are.... well, games. And yet when I played Dark Souls just last year, despite all the rage and frustration I've had with the game, I could not put it down (only reason I did was because I wanted to move to Dark Souls 2 and 3). In fact inbetween I tried to play Horizon Zero Dawn, and while I enjoyed my time with it, my mind kept drifting back to the thought of playing Dark Souls, to the point where after getting to the second area of HZD, I went back and played Dark Souls.
@@StrikeNoir105E Keep it up! My first play through was frustrating, for sure. By the end of my first play through, however, it had rendered me incapable of getting frustrated. It took me 10 years to work out how it did it, but in 2021 I finally understood it. In short, you literally can’t get frustrated so long as you remain present, and the Souls games are designed to punish you only when you lack presence. After 100 hours with the game, back in 2011, I had gotten so used to being present that, like magic, all game-related frustration had vanished. It took me 4 years to even acknowledge that this had happened, as subtle and as utterly transformative as it was.
I get way more frustrated from things like Monster Hunter Rise lacking all sense of challenge due to the overforgiving features and mechanics it has than from Souls games crushing me with its challenges and making me reconsider my approach time and time again. I wish more games took pride in what they expect from the players and realized the value of storytelling, worldbuilding and player's personal experience that comes with the challenge. I can't take half the monsters in Rise seriously cause I'm basically toying with them and knowing that I'll easily win every time makes it down right boring no matter how cool the combat is.
@@StrikeNoir105E Literally the exact same thing happened to me just last year. I picked up Horizon, thought it was fun, played it for maybe 4 days (3 of 4 hrs a day), immediately went back to dark souls 1 and 2, both of which, I had already played through more than once. I'm pretty sure it had something to do with the bonfires as save points in Horizon lol. The replayability of the souls series is near unparalleled imo. Every game I have ever played since my first time playing Dark Souls 3(my first Dark Souls game) somehow made me want to play more dark souls
I haven't been looking forward to a videogame in years, so Elden Ring will be special. I feel like a kid again, all giddy, counting down the days until release. Generally, I believe that the best FromSoftware games are those that don't have a number attached to it (DeS, DaS, BB, Sekiro), so I have high hopes for Elden Ring.
Imo, now this might sound weird, but i truly beileve that this will be the best game ever made to me atleast, early press and footage is making it look like that, every souls gane expanded to its max, just sounds like a dream come true.
im with you, i havent enjoyed a game deeply in a long time let alone been giddy for one, makes me nostalgic, reminding me of a more happy time for video games
I gotta be real… the only souls game I genuinely just didn’t enjoy was DaS, I tried so hard to learn strategy and love it like I love all the the other fromsoftware games but I quit that one, I wasn’t having fun. DS2 and 3 was little easy, bloodbourne is gold and only second to demon souls in my book. Sekiro was fun, great game just not my style.
Honestly the degree to which Elden Ring surpasses Dark Souls is secondary for me. Of course, the more it improves upon Dark Souls the better, but I have 2000 hours in Dark Souls 3. I have such a silly amount of time in it because, unlike other games, the experience found within the Souls games cannot be found anywhere else. Even some of the best Souls Likes, such as Nioh 2 and Mortal Shell (both great games in their own right), do not come close to the level of enjoyment I get out of Miyazaki's games. Because of this, I will be incredibly happy with Elden Ring whether it is leaps and bounds beyond Dark Souls or it only improves upon Dark Souls slightly, because I will just be incredibly grateful for the opportunity to immerse myself in a new piece of work from Miyazaki.
Think of dark souls as "try 1,2, and 3" Sekiro and Bloodborne as "goofy one shots" This game will be a combination of all three. The game they wish they had made instead of those 5 games together. After playing this game I doubt anyone is gonna be wanting to play dark souls for a good bit. Nostalgia dictates that its inevitable so I dont think the series will be buried. Miyazaki wants to make even MORE different series. We can finally have games that aren't just sequels.
@@Assassin0fwar I think this game will be a culmination of ALL the games, not just the Souls games. You can see bits of literally each game in the footage we've seen.
I like Dark Souls 1 more than Dark Souls 3 or even Bloodborne (which was my first Soulsborne game). Dark Souls 1 obviously isn't as polished as the other games (and some areas and bosses feel rushed), but the reason why I personally prefer it over the other From games is because of it's open world and nonlinear progression while at the same time having very tight, linear level design. I don't mind the slower combat either. So it's not simply about which game does what thing better, because they are actually trying to achieve different things. After partaking in the CNT, it's very obvious to me that even though the combat is almost identical to Dark Souls, Elden Ring is trying to do something different than any other From game. For example Elden Ring clearly has a lot more small "generic" dungeons, that don't necessarily have any environmental storytelling or lore and are simply supposed to be caves/temples filled with monsters and treasure. I'm not a huge fan of this concept because I find these generic dungeons boring, but if someone specifically likes them, it's very hard to argue why some other From game would be better because they don't have these type of mini dungeons. I'm more excited of the legacy dungeons (and other more story relevant areas) and how you can apparently complete them in any order you like, but then again a person who enjoys more linear games might like Bloodborne or Dark Souls 3 more. So I don't think the main goal of Elden Ring is necessarily to be a better version of Dark Souls (even though they're clearly trying to polish the formula) and I believe that the people who love Elden Ring more than Dark Souls don't love it because it's "better" but because it tries to achieve something different. I'm just happy to get to play a fresh Soulsborne(ring?) game because I love them all!
I've been saying "Fuck Demon's Souls" for years. It's not worth the time because Dark Souls was such a huge improvement. Elden Ring is to Dark Souls what Dark Souls was to Demon's Souls.
The fact that you made this video specifically to say "I told you so." in advance is the appropriate amount of petty for a DS fanatic. Well played sir. Well played.
I like Ratatoskr a lot. I like the pacing of his videos, I like his mascot design, and I like how he incentivizes discussion. I like all elements of his content. I like the playful nature of encouraging us to dislike and unsubscribe. I like getting a notification about a new video at 2AM when I'm supposed to be sleeping, and I like posting comments on the new video at 2AM when I'm supposed to be sleeping. I like video essays. I like live streams. I like the alienation culture that has grown organically around them. I even like that one subscriber that refuses to adhere to the alienation culture and tries to share the content when it's low on views. I love the topics. I love the music that accompany the topics. I like the feeling of dying.
This is one of those times where when you see it you know the quality you can just feel it. I am happy to see how many outside of the souls community are taking notice and seeing it.
This game has the potential to bring soooo many new people into the Souls community. I really hope Bandai manages to get their attention with their marketing.
The more ppl that come to dark souls world the that fromsoft will most likely start to change their original concept to accommodate. Weve all seen it happen before. Especially if fromsoft is a publicly traded stock (not sure) at some point theyll get bpught out and become EA or Bethesda. It sucks but oh well
@@sdmfbastard They’re owned by Kadokawa which is a massive conglomerate and is publicly traded. I think we can have hope though that Miyazaki will remain in charge and as long as he does they aren’t selling out for anything. There’s no reason to be afraid of newcomers to the community
I tend to disagree. Too many reskins of enemies with same movements as ds3: it worries me it just feels like an overhaul more than a new game. I hope it isnt a cash grab. We’ll have to see.
I had never played through a From Software game until about a month ago when I started Bloodborne. My promise to myself was that if I could beat it, I’d buy Elden Ring. In that time I’ve gone from being totally new to this company to now being more hyped for this game than I have been for any other title in the past. To me the best part of all this is the community. Your channel and a few others are perfect examples of the awesome vibe that these games bring me. February 25th can’t come fast enough.
You sound like a good friend of mine. He recently played Bloodborne for the first time after hearing me praise it for years. Having never played a Fromsoft game before, he almost quit due to the very first area. Then he found the Saw Spear and really liked it's moveset(He started with the Hunter's Axe) and proceeded to absolutely steamroll the game. Now he's just as hyped for Elden Ring and has plans to go back and run Demon's Souls to Dark Souls 3.
slightly off topic from the video but i just gotta say its so refreshing to find someone besides myself that actually loves every aspect of dark souls. i find people either only play PVE and think PVP is broken and only for try-hards, or people only PVP and think the story/lore is just nerdy kid shit. i can honestly say ive spent just as much time combing over item descriptions as i have doing fight clubs or cosplay invasions.
Well I can't speak for everyone else, but my sh*t internet has played into me not liking the PvP aspect of the game. I've seen enough people lag backstab me & teleport around the maps to last me a lifetime.
I disagree with the statement that Elden Ring is strictly better than Dark Souls. This video was made before the game was released, and maybe you've clarified some of these issues in a later video, but here're my thoughts anyway. I see From Software games on a scale from "focused" to "open" for the lack of better terms, with Sekiro being the most focused and Elden Ring being the most open. More focused games like Sekiro and Bloodborne have less options in terms of weapon choice and less room to offset difficulty in the case of Sekiro. At the other end we have Dark Souls and Elden Ring with more weapon options, respec options and an open world in Elden Ring. It's not clear to me that one approach is better than the other, looking at a game as a whole. Now, I know that you only made the comparison to Dark Souls, not the other games I mentioned and I'm willing to admit that it makes more sense to make a direct comparison between Dark Souls and Elden Ring than the others, but there's a key aspect of Elden Ring that makes me very hesitant to such a comparison. Namely, the open world. This is probably the biggest change to the formula as far as I can tell, and it's a double edged sword. It's a great open world and in a lot of ways it adds so much more to the game, but it's also in conflict with some of the things that traditionally work in souls games. It's much easier to balance a boss when you roughly know at what level you will meet it. Granted, most souls games have some level of openness and you always have the ability to grind, but there's a much bigger chance that you miss the "optimal" level in Elden Ring, where you can go wherever you want to go, instead of being forced to fight a boss that gate keeps the next area. This is arguably one of the reasons why it appeals to are much larger audience. I know several people that haven't played any souls games, but played Elden Ring for that exact reason. But for me, it unfortunately meant that bosses in other souls games where more memorable. I was forced to fight them if I wanted to progress. There was little incentive to do this in Elden Ring, because it's easier to just go somewhere else first. Melania was one of the exception for me. I hit level 150 and wanted to stop leveling so I was just left with trying again and again. I still love Elden Ring very much and it does a lot of things better than the other games. Just not everything.
Ratatoskr, if you ever read this, I on the contrary, hate this experience. Hate all of it with a passion. I hate it when I lose innumerable runes to not even just a boss, but a stupid mob that caught me slipping. I hate it when I have to either beat the boss, or lose my sum of runes forever. All those hours. I hate being invaded by some schmuck that just wants to grief me when I got bigger fish to fry. I hate banging my head against the wall till one or the other breaks. I hate being filled with unadulterated rage when I can't get to my runes, or when a boss kills me with a sliver of health left. I hate being crushed without even getting the satisfaction of feeling like I tried. I hate that I don't feel that wave of satisfaction wash over me from bringing down an enemy I previously deemed impossible. ... I hate that after a boss, I just keep going until I fight the next one. And then the next one. And so on. I hate that once I'm challenged, I can't for the life of me refuse. I hate the feeling of defeat when I have to cut my teeth and flee until I come back stronger. But most of all? I HATE that all of that above is why I keep coming back. Why I find Elden Ring so addicting.
I remember playing dark souls for the first time without knowing what being hollowed was, or what humanity was for. I played the entire game without seeing a single summon sign. Took me 15 hours alone to beat Orstein and Smough by myself. Almost broke a controller in the process. Best series of all time and not even close.
I went into Dark Souls having played demon souls for 242 hours of GameTime on my first playthrough alone. I was stuck on the boss and Undead Burg for hours because I didn't know I could use the plunging attack and I had no internet connection whatsoever so I had to play without summoning people. My first playthrough was 40 hours because I took my time with my first playthrough
I ragequitted for over a month first time, I git gud, and now I have close to 1k hours in DS1 alone, and apx 900 hours in DS2, they hooked me like only one other game in my life has done which is Devil May Cry 3, and I feel that sense of anticipation towards Elden Ring as I had the first time I truly "got" the soulsgames
well considering how FROM is tackling their games and considering their track record, I'd say being called a "FROMSOFTWARE Simp" is actually a Platinum Medal you can be proud of carrying around and showing to anyone.
I completely agree with you here: Elden Ring will be the best game From's ever made so far and I have been counting the days down eagerly waiting to get in. The days are now going into single digits and I can't wait to see what passion has been put into Elden Ring firsthand. I've been so singlemindedly focused on it ever since I saw videos of the network test, just glimpsing a fragment of the game's glory. To think, Elden Ring went from a rumor to one of the most anticipated games I know about: all those years now come to this. The final few days before we're finally able to enter The Lands Between might be the hardest to wait through, but so worth it I feel.
Dark souls has been the saving grace in my life-Let me explain, to me, video games were getting stale, and i seemed to be playing the same one over and over but they just kept getting more boring, i couldnt find a good hobby, and things were going downhill, and dark souls and fromsoft as a whole, saved me in a way, and thats why i believe elden ring, will not only be the greatest fromsoft game, it will be the greatest game ever made for me personally, and i will saver the first playthrough more than anything.
Already warned my family they won't be seeing me for a couple weeks lol Originally I had planned to revisit DS3 as practice. It's been years after all, I'm quite rusty. But recently I decided that I WANT to go into this rusty. It's a whole new combat balance, new mechanics, etc... and I want to fucking LOSE! I got so frustrated picking up the new Monster Hunter games and wrecking everything with no effort. Give me something to strive against, something to work for, something to master FFS. That is the Dark Souls experience.
You don't really rust too hard from dark souls, the muscle memory sticks pretty well, sekiro on the other hand, I 100% it in 2019, turned it on the other night on my ng++ play through and got absolutely demolished
I have the same feeling. The problem is that i almost only play souls games and have done so for the last couple of years. So i decided 2-3 months ago that im not allowed to play any souls game before elden ring. I want to be "rusty", and eventhough elden ring probably is going to bring new light to the souls combat, i want to forget how good it feels in order for that new light to shine even stronger.
First entering the souls series is such a unique experience, something which is truly hard to recreate even with future games in the series. The first souls game I played was Dark Souls: Prepare to Die edition, going in blind without a guide and without knowledge of where to go is an experience that few other games can truly offer. Not because of how unknown the world feels or the lack of knowledge on where things may be, but because the feeling of achievement through discovery and surpassing challenges feels so much greater than most other games can offer, at least to me. I will say, future games in the series while remaining fun and new still lacked that feeling of utter wonder which the first Dark Souls game brought me. Few experiences have been able to create that sense of newness, Bloodborne and Sekiro being unique enough to really give off a similar vibe. That said, I have a feeling that Elden Ring will truly be special. A souls game that takes various elements from the various predecessors. A souls game which is open world, and truly open world not merely branching paths, is something which I have craved for so very long. A souls game I feel will be in a league beyond all others. I envy those who have never played a souls-like prior to Elden Ring, but even then I feel that Elden Ring will prove to be something that sets itself apart from previous games that even veteran souls players will be taken aback by it. I cannot wait to play this game.
You're a sage man. You have such a good way of wrapping culminating anticipations and premonitions into cohesive and poignant statements. The Souls community is grateful to have you. Also after having put in 80+ hours, you were 100% correct.
I almost have the feeling that elden ring might be the best game made in general it has just about everything u could want in a game obviously this is subjective but u cant rlly deny quality when its presented to u for instance i dont like apex legends but i will tell that it is a good game i think elden ring will be one of those games where its quality will undeniable even if ur not a souls fan and even if u dont enjoy the game
Your own hype for the game will ultimately be why you end up disappointed with it. Im baffled honestly with how you can say that given NO game yet has even mastered having a 100% meaningful open world map with no padding. Witcher 3 & red dead, & countless others couldn't do it. The open world will make or break this game & no one seems to be addressing it.
@@ISetYourFaceOnFire Plenty of people have talked about it. Even Ratatoskr has gone on record specifically addressing the open world nature of the game. You don't believe because all those others tried, and failed. From Software's destiny, however, is greatness. They will succeed where everyone else has failed, because that is what this studio was made to do. They believe so much in the power of their vision, that they're going to, in an act of straight-up magick, take what only existed previously in their collective shared vision, and turn it into reality, in the same way that Aliester Crowley said that 'the definition of magick is the art and science of causing change to one's environment in conformity to one's will.' The _imago_ is pure and sharp, perfect for its revelation to the world. Dark Souls set several industry trends - Elden Ring is going to redefine the way people think about video games and their creation, and even art in general. Prima materia into alkahest, lead to gold, mortality to divinity. The material image of this work is the mirror in which is hidden the internal face of God, that which can only be properly recognized and experienced through the mask of flesh that it wears. It will wear that mask so that we don't die from witnessing the truth. Remember what I've said once you've beaten the game.
Nothing is better than that magical first play through, all of the things you discover and all of the things that go horribly wrong, it’s something you only get once
It’s actually insane how well this has aged. I thought about going back to play Dark Souls again and then realized I’d miss riding on my horse and having jumping attacks, a mana bar, and guard counters. Elden Ring has actually completely made Dark Souls irrelevant. In fact, I want them to make all of the Dark Souls games inside of Elden Ring somehow. This game is, I think, literally everything that FromSoft have always wanted to do when making Demon Souls and Dark Souls. This game is literally the culmination of every Soulsbornekiro game they’ve ever made put into shape. It’s the thing they’ve always dreamt of making but never could before, and it FEELS like it. That’s the best part. This just feels like what they aspired Demon Souls to be when they made it. It doesn’t feel weird or foreign. It feels right at home.
Really? So much of the content form bosses to dungeons gets rehashed that the whole experience becomes mediocre especially compared to the far superior games like ds1,3, and bloodborne where the games are far more tightly crafted. Elden ring hurts to play because it was on the cusp of being better than the others but manages to just rehash the same content as filler so much it feels like you’re punished for actually exploring. It’s really good for a first attempt at open world but I hope they manage to do it better on their next go
@@plugshirt1762 How are you punished for exploring? Literally exploration is how you get spells and weapons? Also seems you forgot the chalice dungeons. At least Elden rings dungeons are actually enjoyable to comb through
@@shirothr5384 because loot for exploring doesn’t take away the fact the actual exploring is so much of a slog to do because everything is so repetitive entering the same three types of dungeons and fighting the same rehashed mini bosses hundreds of times. Also I’m not forgetting the chalice dungeons they were a relatively small part of bloodborne and even then are vastly superior to the dungeons in elden ring. I don’t know why you’re pretending the majority of dungeons in elden ring that weren’t caves or mines were just pseudo chalice dungeons with worse areas and bosses. I thought the chalice dungeons areas were too repetitive but elden ring manages to make it tens of similar dungeons more repetitive with their rooms than the chalice dungeons did. As for bosses the chalice dungeons had had some rehashed bosses like elden ring but it at least also had a slew of really good bosses unique to them as opposed to elden ring where you fight the same bosses a minimum of fours times and usually they don’t even have very good movesets
I feel like im some sort of souls boomer at this point. I dont like the addition of horse or huge open world, guard counters i dont know as i never once used them, but i genuenly feel this is one of the worse souls games.
@@PMnLC the open world abs horse I feel are fine it’s just the fact they implement it poorly as it feels like they just made the content for one souls game and just spread it out rehashing hundreds of mini bosses and having the same general restructures to explore with only a couple that are actually interesting. I think it’s still a good game but it feels like I can barely find anyone who isn’t saying it’s either a masterpiece or the worst game ever made
I'm with you man and fantastic points made on why DS3 was constrained. Also note that Miyazaki has also said that Bloodbourne was his favorite souls game when he made it. I think this is because he was free to make something brand new after DS. My love of the soulsbourne games runs deep and I can not wait to experience this next masterpiece.
I think Miyazaki probably always wanted to do a medieval fantasy game on the scale on ER but couldn’t due to technical limitations. I also like to think that he wanted to do something a bit more high fantasy instead of dark fantasy so a new I P was the best way to go.
Something that makes me even more Hyped is the fact that Miyazaki, though credited as Director for Sekiro, actually didnt do much of the writing. The writing of item descriptions and story boarding is something he's always had a hand in all of his titles. What this tells me is his full attention has been on Elden Ring storywise, no surprise since one of his favorite writers helped build the lore. This is gonna be his magnum opus. We havent played an original Miyazaki WRITTEN and directed game since Bloodborne, and we all know how amazing that one was.
@@ATC43 That’s true! I’m excited to see what two different people (both masters in their own right) have managed to create. I know what you mean about Bloodborne’s story/lore and as much as I loved DS3 it mainly felt like it was done to be the true sequel to DS1 since a lot of the fans felt the DS2 didn’t live up. With ER it’s more of like you said Miyazaki had a brand new canvas to create something new plus with the help of GRRM the end result should be something nothing short of greatness.
Thanks for making these kinds of videos. I'm not one to cut myself off from all trailers and info about a game before it releases, but I like keeping most of the surprise. I desperately want to watch all videos about this game, but I know I shouldn't since I too want that first playthrough to be really special. This type of video satisfies the excitement I have while being entirely spoiler free. I appreciate it.
Budget, time constraints and hardware limit is truly the thing that was Limiting from software from making more games like Elden Ring. We've seen what those 3 problems did to the development of dark souls 2. But now, i also truly think that Elden Ring is going to be the Magnum Opus of Miyazaki, if not from software as a whole. They had everything on their favor, time, hardware, budget, creativity and the fan base. And i thought Miyazaki would never make something better than Bloodborne, simply because he stated that it was the game he had the most creative freedom while developing, and "made it in a way he was satisfied with".
Dark Souls 2 was hampered by the fact that they were trying to use a different engine but due to the PS3 and Xbox 360 not being able to handle that new engine they had no choice but to go back to the original engine that used on Dark Souls 1 so they had to actually scrap all the stuff they made on the new engine and apply it to old engine that used for Dark Souls 1 they should have delayed it and released it on the PS4 Xbox One and PC instead of releasing it on the PS3 and Xbox 360
@@redseagaming7832 yeah, but Bandai was kinda putting pressure on them, they also started working on the game a bit before Artorias of the Abyss was out, so surely a delay would mess it up big time. Not to mention the fact that the game had to change a director pretty much midway through development because one of them though the game wasn't feeling like dark souls was about, And they had to rework it all while reusing a lot of assets they had as leftovers due to time. The DLCs were absolute proof that the B team only needed the right time and budget to work on a good thing, and if the hardware was all into the PS4/Xone then the whole game could've been massive. But they still did a good job honestly
@Ratatoskr I've just discovered your channel yesterday, and well, i think i love it, i really like your content. I was so torn and undecided if i wanted to start as a vagabond or confessor or wretch.......well, you absolutely helped me decide that :D. About the idea of Miyazaki using his lore to hide some metafore....i like what you told about ariandel. Is it possible in your opinion that he did a similar thing here, other than about alchemy etc.....i mean: what we know for now about elden ring lore, is that the old cicle, the old equilibrium of the world, shattered with the break of the elden ring, leaving the world in chaos and with the sensation of nothingness and of everything peryshing. Only a tarnished stand out, thanks to a shard of ring and the grace within himself. And the game invite us as to "become THE lord". I can see the fall of the old world, as the end of dark soul. The nothingness, as the emptiness we all felt without their games. And the tarnished, as the game itself, that stands out and that whit our help, is ready to become the "Lord" of a new era. lol i'm just rumbling around just for the anticipation of this game. don't listen to me and bytheway, sorry for my bad english XD good work, keep it up :D
You have done the opposite of alienating me. You introduced me to Elden ring, your Dark Souls fanboying made me check out DS3. Now I'm looking forward to Elden Ring's release
I could give a long explanation as to why I agree with you so much, but everythinf you said here, is stuff I've been saying to my friends for months, you put it so well and I wholly agree
I highly agree with the sentiment of your love for the DARKSOULS series, but in the end being able to move onto something new. This is the same for me, who has 1500 hours on ds3 and with remastered, ds2, bloodborne, ds1 and demon souls remake, have 2000+. I’m ready to leave this all behind for elden ring. Of course I can always come back to these great games, but from what we’ve seen: the amazing art, the open world, the ashes of war, the horse gameplay etc. it is abundantly clear, to me, that Elden Ring will be better than any of the previous titles. God bless the people who can but, I cannot play more ds3 builds or pvp for the next few years lol. I want elden ring to be my new home.
Everything you said in the first 2 minutes, is just right. These games are all about overcoming challenges. I already liked and subbed, in those first 2 minutes.
Wow, the first few minutes of that video really spoke to me. Its impeccable how From Software have created a game so amazing despite being really really frustrating. I too enjoy dying, especially to invaders or while i am invading; i like dying to stupid builds, weapons terrains etc, it really gives the gift of knowledge.
Depends which dark souls game you’re talking about, but the combat is generally a lot slower than your typical action RPG games, the world is also a lot more interesting and deep than quite a lot of games.
I don’t know how true this will be for Elden Ring, but in the Souls games, the reason people struggle with them is because the game is asking you to be present. It is designed to punish you until you step in to the present, but once you do the game stops being so difficult and you start to get a feel for what “here and now” gaming is like. This is what ruins games like TW3, lol. You get so used to being present that you can’t accept anything less than that. This is where all of the “Dark Souls ruined other games for me” posts are coming from. So, I’d say THAT’s how it compares.
That "I love Dark Souls" speech you had hit different since I just reread Hellsing. Jokes aside, I'm incredibly pumped for Elden Ring because it will be my first real chance to play a souls game blind. I got into the series rather late so even on my first playthroughs I already knew what all the secrets *were* if not the specifics. As much as I loved Bloodborne, I can't imagine how much more I would have enjoyed discovering everything first hand.
I just hope fromsoft stays small and never sells the compsny to a megacorporation like shitty Microsoft... Also hope it doesn't become so popular that it goes full mainstream and attracts the outrage culture crowd that tries to force fromsoft to go full woke.... Fromsoft is one of the final few pieces of untainted entertainment that I have and can trust in. I hope Miyazaki forever stays true to himself. They are TRULY.... one of a kind... the megacorporations that take notice of Elden Ring's success, better look the other way... don't want corporate greed and filth tainting greatness... They can try and fail to copy Elden Ring all they want... they're about the money... not the ART that Gaming really is.
Man I'm sad. Sad I just found you. I am so excited for Elden Ring. Only one more week until all we Tarnished will rise. I hope to see you in the lands between.
Now that elden ring has become the most awarded game of all time, i think this video now holds a different meaning. if there was a way to objectively chose the greatest game of all time, that would likely be the number of awards that game has obtained. while that isnt really a perfect way to decide, it is close enough that elden ring can without doubt be called a contender for the best video game in all of history. Elden ring is one of perhaps a dozen titles that is a true contender for the objective version of the title of best videogame, and this video now stands as a true statement and no longer speculation.
This video is awesome. It's just something about these games that gets me going. My friends don't understand how I play the Souls games if they're so 'hard'. Elden Ring is going to be awesome and I can't wait to start my journey as a Confessor, just a few more days.
Man, I've been watching and listening to the previews, and let me just say, the network test was nothing... The scope and scale of varied content and features in this game, and the density of that content is insane. Also, with respect to the alchemical interpretation, your take is interesting, and perhaps one of the "layers" to the theme that Miyazaki was trying to capture. As for me, (I'll obviously have to play the full game to know more), I think Elden Ring is about a polarized and warring world, resembling our own , and the appropriate response to such a world. Where God is dead (The golden order is broken) and there aren't any logical ideals or common values anymore, and so this reminds me of a "search for meaning " kind of vibe, if that makes sense. On a higher level, I think its a message of deep self work and improvement, to search for the philosopher's stone (The Elden Ring, metaphorically perhaps trying to embody your values or ideals) and make yourself your "Magnum Opus", to become Golden. After all, the very first NPC we meet in Limgrave basically says "kys virgin" and tries to crush our ambitions. (tbf he does make up for it by helping us later, he's just cynical) Sorry for blabbering, I'm just really excited for the game lol
im honestly tempted to roll wretch because of one of your recent videos because of that unique experience of not knowing where everything is. Im sure some people will run straight to the end seeing that its open world and you can go wherever straight into the legacy dungeons even if you'd like but as someone who has 100% every souls game except sekiro ever since dark souls 2, i find myself wanting to explore every little side cave and every point of interest anyway. All the better if i can overcome the challenges with that "hodge-podge" you mentioned in your wretch video. The lore was also shaping up to be very interesting as i have heard vaati talk about it roughly so far.
Man i wished i could like this more and i even don´t know if i will play the game, i love your content man, your arguments are a delight to ear. You really are a chunky pasta sauce,
before I hopped into the Dark Souls series last year, I remember how daunting the game sounded. It was something I wanted to achieve as a "gamer" so I dove in headfirst. No walkthroughs, no guides, just a deprived soul. 1 year later, I have beaten all 3 Dark Souls, as well as Bloodborne. Best game series I've ever played and I love the community. Elden Ring comes at the perfect time for me and I cannot wait to delve into this game. Not going out, not leaving my room, just straight Elden Ring all weekend lol.
I dont know what themes could possible make me love Elden Ring more than dark souls in terms of its philosophical impact and the way it resonates with me..... but I am sure as hell excited to find out :D
I discovered your channel not too long ago. Can't wait to see your Elden Ring vids after release. Keep up the good work man. Also, what's the name of the track that started playing around the 6:30 mark.
I was looking for the song as well because I knew I'd heard it before on some Dark Souls tribute video I believe. Anyway... It's King's Field IV - Dark Reality :)
I cringed so hard when he said he likes losing souls haha. That was such a blatant lie. No one likes when they lose thousands of souls when doing a runback
I love your passion for these games. Its a passion I too share and I get thrills from listening to you discuss topics such as narrative structure, theme, interpretive design choices. Its awesome. The true beauty of these games lays within their ability to create a self sustaining thread of open dialogue. Ive always told people that dark souls 1 is my favorite game to date and I always found it difficult to express why. The reasons are found within the players reaction to the world they are thrust into. Its an experience that cannot be surmised easily; its one you must find for yourself. I love these games. I cannot wait for Elden Ring.
Like so many other fans, it's just torture waiting for this game to come out. I also agree that Elden Ring is going to be better than my beloved Dark Souls games. That being said, the main flaw you mentioned about Dark Souls 3, the constraints of having to stay within the boundaries of the lore, is actually tied into why it happens to be my favorite of the three games. Like you, I'm also obsessed with the lore, the story, and the themes of these games, and I've found that DS3 really helps to cement what was expressed in DS1, which was a bit more vague in that older game. DS1 expressed the theme of impermanence, the fact that trying to hold onto something only ends up corrupting that thing and oneself, and how power structures use those under it to maintain their own status. DS3 just strikes that one home even further, and I just loved how it showed how detrimental and futile the effort to maintain the Age of Fire was (I actually burst out laughing the first time I found out that the Lords of Cinder forsake linking the fire after doing it once). But there's something else DS3 explores that I don't really see other people talking about: the issues of maintaining heritage and lineage, how much history gets distorted by others, and how easily people lose sight of what may have been originally established. We find several instances of people continuing traditions without really understanding what it is they are upholding. Institutions, cultures, and legacies have been distorted and changed , sometimes deliberately, as with the Way of White, and sometimes just as a consequence of the passage of time, its secrets desperately searched for, as with the sorceries of Oolacile, and the Xanthous Scholars researching them. We even see even see covenants and their purpose completely perverted, with the only real inheritor and leader of it being ill suited to keep it going (think Yorshka and the Darkmoon Blades... and yes, I do think the Aldritch Faithful represent former Blades who betrayed their original covenant). Basically, we're seeing the results of what happen when things are forced to exist way past their prime, when the past is venerated beyond what is reasonable, and how futile it is to try to keep things static. The rot isn't just happening in the painting; it's happening everywhere, but there are still those who want to bring back "the good old days", and overhyping a supposed glorious past. I feel DS3 does a better job of conveying this than DS1 does, but only because it is brining the themes and lore of DS1 into a sharper focus. So in a strange way, it's it's because of it's tie to the first game that makes me love it so much, despite the fact that it's also a flaw.
I remember spending 10 hours on Sens Fortress alone because I didn't know about the bonfire within. Good times
So much this!
Making it to the top, missing the bonfire and continuing on 0 estus, frantically running around, swapping to ranged when i was too hurt to take even one more hit... easily one of the best things ive ever experienced in a game. Thought my heart was gona implode though.

Only thing I disagree on was enjoying getting killed by overpowered invaders early game. That objectively sucks in my eyes.

@@gatorslayer2388 It will be *the* game for sure.
Truer words have not been spoken
im with you, i havent enjoyed a game deeply in a long time let alone been giddy for one, makes me nostalgic, reminding me of a more happy time for video games
Because of this, I will be incredibly happy with Elden Ring whether it is leaps and bounds beyond Dark Souls or it only improves upon Dark Souls slightly, because I will just be incredibly grateful for the opportunity to immerse myself in a new piece of work from Miyazaki.
truth my man the truth
Think of dark souls as "try 1,2, and 3"
Sekiro and Bloodborne as "goofy one shots"
This game will be a combination of all three.
Man I really wanted to like nioh games I tried man they just felt like shit
After all the good he says about dark souls: “Elden ring is going to be better than dark souls, fuck dark souls.”

I've been saying "Fuck Demon's Souls" for years. It's not worth the time because Dark Souls was such a huge improvement.

"Ah, you ignorant slaves... finally taken notice, have you? Of the power of my beloved Elden Ring, child of FromSoft..."
The more ppl that come to dark souls world the that fromsoft will most likely start to change their original concept to accommodate. Weve all seen it happen before. slightly off topic from the video but i just gotta say its so refreshing to find someone besides myself that actually loves every aspect of dark souls. i find people either only play PVE and think PVP is broken and only for try-hards, or people only PVP and think the story/lore is just nerdy kid shit. i can honestly say ive spent just as much time combing over item descriptions as i have doing fight clubs or cosplay invasions.

I hate that after a boss, I just keep going until I fight the next one. And then the next one. And so on.
I hate that once I'm challenged, I can't for the life of me refuse.
I hate the feeling of defeat when I have to cut my teeth and flee until I come back stronger.

Bu...bu....but...The gwafix aren't good enough and recycled animations. -- Words of a true casual and poser
Given that Bloodborne holds that title for me right now I think Elden Ring is the only game that could possibly dethrone it.
It is the perfect pasta sauce to many of us
Your own hype for the game will ultimately be why you end up disappointed with it.
I think it’s still a good game but it feels like I can barely find anyone who isn’t saying it’s either a masterpiece or the worst game ever made
I feel like a kid several days befor xmas, you can see the wrappings but not whats inside.
The anticipation is real
This finna age like fine wine lol wow
I'm going through a pretty bad time right now. Waiting for Elden Ring is one of the few things keeping me held together.
This is gonna be my final chapter in my gaming history so I'm gonna close with a golden key.
Well. You weren’t wrong!
@Ratatoskr
I've just discovered your channel yesterday, and well, i think i love it, i really like your content.
I was so torn and undecided if i wanted to start as a vagabond or confessor or wretch.......well, you absolutely helped me decide that :D.
About the idea of Miyazaki using his lore to hide some metafore....i like what you told about ariandel.
Is it possible in your opinion that he did a similar thing here, other than about alchemy etc.....i mean:
what we know for now about elden ring lore, is that the old cicle, the old equilibrium of the world, shattered with the break of the elden ring, leaving the world in chaos and with the sensation of nothingness and of everything peryshing. Only a tarnished stand out, thanks to a shard of ring and the grace within himself. And the game invite us as to "become THE lord".
I can see the fall of the old world, as the end of dark soul. The nothingness, as the emptiness we all felt without their games. And the tarnished, as the game itself, that stands out and that whit our help, is ready to become the "Lord" of a new era.
lol i'm just rumbling around just for the anticipation of this game. don't listen to me and bytheway, sorry for my bad english XD
good work, keep it up :D
You have done the opposite of alienating me. You introduced me to Elden ring, your Dark Souls fanboying made me check out DS3. Now I'm looking forward to Elden Ring's release
I could give a long explanation as to why I agree with you so much, but everythinf you said here, is stuff I've been saying to my friends for months, you put it so well and I wholly agree
You were right
I highly agree with the sentiment of your love for the DARKSOULS series, but in the end being able to move onto something new.
Let's hope the new meta isn't, point down. Literally that's all anyone does it's so overplayed with all the different ways to emote
You are so dramatic, and I love it! Been nice watching your vids in anticipation. Thanks.
I seriously consider trying Elden Ring. Would you be able to advise how those dark souls games compare to an RPG like Witcher 3?
combat feel is similar but extremely less forgiving
@@1SWINZ1 Well, that doesn't help at all, but definitely sounds intriguing!
@@hern7213 If you decide to play, it’ll help. Big time.
That intro represents me so much. You found a new subscriber. Dark Souls is perfect.
this video aged well
You make some great content and are not afraid of speaking your mind. I've started binge watching you videos. Keep it up!
I wish I shared your optimism. I appreciate you for it, having so little of my own.
It felt like you said: “mark my words ashen one…”
Rat really just woke up and chose violence 2:38
Man I'm sad. Sad I just found you. I am so excited for Elden Ring. Only one more week until all we Tarnished will rise. I hope to see you in the lands between.
Dude, your voice is a soothing as Vaati's. Love your content ❤️ Always looking for smaller channels with new ideas and perspectives.
The first two minutes reminds me of the Major's speech from Hellsing.
This is a good thing.
wonderful job putting those feelings i came upon all those years ago in 2009 with Demon's Souls into plain words in the first couple minutes my friend
Lets be real. I hope am wrong but i dont think it will reach BloodBorne
Maybe in 10 years we'll say the same thing about elden ring. This entire community brings me so much joy
(tbf he does make up for it by helping us later, he's just cynical)
Sorry for blabbering, I'm just really excited for the game lol
im honestly tempted to roll wretch because of one of your recent videos because of that unique experience of not knowing where everything is.
How much is John Eldenring paying you?
I just found your channel a couple weeks ago and dude, you are a fucking boss. Please keep up the good work.
"Elden Ring is going to be better than Dark Souls; FUCK DARK SOULS!" had me laughing for a good minute
In a week we'll finally play ER. Your videos help me keep my patience until then, so keep up with the amazing content you're doing!
Nah honestly I liked how False King Allant decreased soul levels because it’s such a Dark Souls mechanic.
Dude, I just gotta say the way you speak, the cadence and intelligence, is like half the reason I click on your awesome videos.
"FUCK DARK SOULS" 🤣🤣
This feels like the "I love War" speech from the major in Hellsing. That's the vibe anyway. Love your content.
cringe.
3 weeks and this video already aged better than wine
stanning this hard for a game that hasn’t even come out yet is beginning to alienate me. thanks.
miyazaki has yet to disappoint. cant wait till friday
You're making me smile. Because I can relate. Have a wonderful day.
Here a month later, I can say for sure, you told us so.
"You are overhyped. You are a From Software simp. You are engaging in baseless speculation."
And that speculation of fucking right.
I remember the time when we thought the game didn’t even exist… Now it’s gonna release next week.
This intro reminds me of the opening to American Psycho where he describes the type of moisturizer he uses.
Great vid 👍🏿
I love The Major's "I like war" parody. I can't believe I don't see it done more often.
This video ages like fine wine 🤌🏾
And in a few years I'll be back, to say that I agreed with you then, and it's my favorite game of all time now.(in the future)
This man is reading the item descriptions of interviews for hints of the real life lore
I absolutely loved this video! please keep them coming! already subbed ;)
Interesting as always. A link to the alchemy post would be nice!
Ratatoskr, once again you put out a bloody excellent video.
It helps make the wait for Elden Ring feel quicker, perhaps.
The introduction up to 2:39 really summed up these past 2 years
Your experience with dark souls is eerily similar to my current experience with hollow knight.
